Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteReverse-osmosis water can taste or smell bad when a cartridge is exhausted, the storage tank or internal tubing is contaminated, water is picking up flavors from plumbing or the sink, or the incoming supply has changed. The flavor alone cannot identify which cause applies. Compare the RO faucet with other cold-water taps, check the unit’s service history, and follow the exact instructions for your model before replacing cartridges or sanitizing the system.
What a bad taste or smell can tell you
Reverse osmosis (RO) water passes through several treatment stages before it reaches a dedicated faucet. A typical arrangement has a sediment prefilter, a carbon filter, the RO membrane, a postfilter, and a pressurized storage tank. Any stage, plus the tubing, fittings, faucet, tank, sink or incoming supply, can affect what you notice in the glass.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says unexpected taste or odor in treated water can be a sign that an RO system needs maintenance. That is a maintenance warning, not a diagnosis. The same symptom can come from the drain, a household pipe or a change in utility treatment, so replacing a filter without locating the source may not solve it.

Common causes and the clues that separate them
| What you notice | Possible source | What the clue does—and does not—prove |
|---|---|---|
| Flavor appears only at the RO faucet, especially as the cartridge approaches its service date | An exhausted prefilter, carbon filter, postfilter or membrane | Supports a maintenance check. It does not identify which cartridge is spent; use the model’s schedule and troubleshooting instructions. |
| Stale, musty or unusual flavor after the unit sat unused | Water that has been standing in the storage tank or internal passages, or contamination in the tank/system | Long inactivity makes a system check and possibly manufacturer-directed sanitizing relevant. There is no universal flush or sanitizing recipe for every model. |
| Metallic or bitter note | Contact with copper, iron or galvanized plumbing | The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) identifies plumbing contact as a common source. The RO equipment may be functioning normally. |
| Plastic, rubbery or chemical-like note after installation or a parts change | New tubing, fittings, seals or an unapproved component | Check that every part is approved and compatible with the exact unit. Do not assume all tubing or fittings sold for “RO” systems are interchangeable. |
| Rotten or stagnant odor that fades when a glass is moved away from the sink | The sink, drain or nearby plumbing rather than the water | DWI recommends this location test. A smell that remains in a clean glass away from the sink requires further water or system investigation. |
| Earthy, musty, bleach-like or medicinal change at several taps | A change in source water or utility treatment | Utilities can experience seasonal or treatment-related odor changes. A local example is reservoir algae producing earthy or musty notes, while disinfection adjustments can produce bleach-like notes. Those examples are specific to the utility that reported them, not a diagnosis for every supply. |
A “rotten-egg” description is useful for reporting the symptom, but it does not by itself establish sulfur contamination or any other single cause. Sensory descriptions should guide the checks below, not replace them.
How the RO stages can affect flavor
Prefilter and carbon filter
The prefilter protects the membrane from sediment. The carbon stage reduces chlorine and some organic compounds that affect taste and protects the membrane from chlorine damage. When these cartridges are overdue, water quality and production can decline. The correct replacement interval depends on incoming water, household use and the manufacturer’s instructions.
RO membrane
The membrane removes dissolved contaminants, but its performance depends on pressure, temperature, feed-water quality and the condition of the preceding filters. A membrane that is exhausted or fouled is one documented possibility when treated water develops an unexpected taste or odor. Low production or a change in pressure alongside the flavor strengthens the case for a service check.

Postfilter, tank and faucet
The postfilter is the final treatment stage before the dedicated faucet. A spent postfilter can reintroduce an unpleasant flavor. The storage tank holds treated water for later use, so contamination or prolonged stagnation there can affect every glass even when the membrane is still working. The faucet, tubing and connectors can also contribute a taste.
Diagnose the source before changing parts
- Compare locations. Draw water from the RO faucet and from at least one other cold-water tap in a clean glass. Note whether the symptom is confined to the RO outlet or appears throughout the home. If other households or neighbors report the same change, record when it began and contact the water utility.
- Move the glass away from the sink. This is especially useful for rotten or stagnant odors. Pour the sample, walk to another room and smell it again. If the odor disappears, clean and investigate the sink and drain before treating the RO equipment. If it remains, continue with the water and system checks.
- Review the timeline. Write down the installation date, each cartridge change, any period when the unit was unused, and the moment the symptom started. A change immediately after installation or a cartridge swap points to a fitting, part, startup or flushing issue that the maker or installer should address for that model.
- Check system symptoms. Look for reduced flow, low tank pressure, slower production, leaks or an unusual drain-flow pattern. These signs do not prove a particular failure, but together with unexpected taste or odor they justify following the system’s troubleshooting section.
- Check the maintenance record and manual. Identify the exact brand, model and cartridge numbers. Use the maker’s stated service interval and compatible parts list rather than a generic “RO filter” label. EPA guidance gives broad ranges, not a substitute for the installed unit’s instructions.
- Escalate when the change is strong or persistent. A particularly bad or unpalatable taste or smell, a symptom affecting several taps, or a change shared by neighbors warrants a call to the water company. Describe the locations affected, start date and any utility notice. Do not infer safety from taste alone.
Fixes matched to the likely source
Replace an overdue or exhausted cartridge
Replace only the cartridge identified by the troubleshooting instructions or service schedule. Confirm the exact model and part number, shut off the feed and tank valves as directed, and use the startup and flushing procedure supplied with the unit. A replacement that fits physically but is not approved for the system can change performance or introduce an unwanted taste.
EPA’s general 2024 guidance says prefilters are often replaced about every six months and RO membranes often every one to five years. These are typical ranges. Local water quality, volume, pressure and the manufacturer’s design can shorten or lengthen them, so the manual takes priority.

Sanitize only with model-specific instructions
When a manual identifies sanitizing as the next step, follow that procedure exactly or use a qualified installer. Sanitizing normally involves isolating cartridges or the membrane, applying the specified agent, observing the required contact time and flushing completely; the order and materials vary by design. North Star advises sanitizing its systems every few years or after a long vacation, while an EcoPure manual provides its own procedure. Neither schedule should be applied automatically to another model.

Correct a sink, drain or plumbing source
If the smell vanishes away from the sink, clean the drain and inspect the trap and surrounding surfaces. If the glass still tastes metallic or bitter away from the sink, a plumber can check pipe materials, stagnant branches and fittings. Replace unapproved tubing or connectors with components specified for the unit.
Ask the utility about a supply change
Utilities may alter disinfectant doses, draw from a different source or experience seasonal algae-related compounds. Ask whether there is a current notice, flushing operation or treatment change in your area. Utility advice is more reliable than trying to identify a contaminant from flavor.

Maintenance intervals and what they mean
| Component or action | Published general guidance | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Prefilters | Often replaced every six months (EPA, 2024) | A broad interval only; adjust to the unit’s manual, local water quality and use. |
| RO membrane | Often replaced every one to five years (EPA, 2024) | A typical range, not a guarantee. Performance, pressure and feed-water conditions matter. |
| Sanitizing | No single universal interval | Use the maker’s procedure. Some manufacturers specify a multi-year interval or sanitizing after extended nonuse. |
| Postfilter | Model-specific | Use the service schedule and the cartridge number listed for the exact system. |
Keep a dated record inside the cabinet. Include the cartridge part number, installation date, any flushing performed and symptoms observed. This makes it easier to distinguish an aging filter from a new plumbing or supply event.
When the symptom needs professional or utility help
- Contact the water utility when the taste or smell affects multiple household taps, nearby homes, or persists despite ordinary system maintenance.
- Contact the manufacturer or installer when the issue began after installation, a cartridge change or service, or when the manual does not cover the symptom.
- Use a qualified plumber for suspected pipe, fitting, drain or faucet problems.
- Stop guessing from flavor if there is a health advisory, boil-water notice or other utility alert; follow that official direction.
The DWI’s consumer guidance states that a “particularly bad or strong smell or taste which makes the water unpalatable” should be reported to the water company. Taste and odor are warning signs to investigate, not a home test that can certify water as safe.

Replacement cartridges are appropriate only when the service schedule, system symptoms or troubleshooting instructions indicate that maintenance is due. Before ordering, copy the complete model and cartridge number from the housing or manual, verify the stage (prefilter, carbon, membrane or postfilter), and confirm that the part is approved for that unit and your water conditions.

A manufacturer-approved sanitizing kit or qualified RO service is a secondary option when the manual calls for sanitizing, the unit has been idle for an extended period, or poor taste persists after the correct cartridges are installed and flushed. A kit intended for a different design may damage components or leave residue, so model compatibility is essential.
Bottom line for a bad-tasting or bad-smelling RO system
Start by locating the symptom: RO faucet only, sink area only, or several taps. Then check the unit’s history, compatible cartridge schedule and model-specific sanitizing instructions. Replace or sanitize only when those instructions support it. If the change is strong, persistent or widespread, involve the water utility rather than trying to diagnose the cause from taste or smell.
