New asphalt cracking is not one specific defect. The pattern, location, width, timing and movement determine whether you are looking at a limited surface crack, a traffic-related distress pattern, a reflection from the layer below, or a problem that needs more than filler. Photograph the pavement and have the paving contractor inspect it before sealing anything. Limited cracks in otherwise sound pavement may be sealed or filled; widespread, deteriorated or moving cracks may require patching, milling or deeper rehabilitation.

What a crack in new asphalt can—and cannot—tell you

“New” describes the age of the pavement, not the cause of the damage. A crack that appears days after placement, one that develops during rolling, and one that becomes visible after a season of traffic can have different explanations. The visible pattern is the starting point for diagnosis.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) separates asphalt-surface distress into several categories, including fatigue, block, edge, longitudinal, reflection and transverse cracking. Its Distress Identification Manual for the LTPP Program is useful for recognizing patterns, but it does not identify the cause of a particular driveway without site information.

A reliable diagnosis normally requires photographs, the crack dimensions and location, installation dates, weather during paving, traffic loading, pavement-layer information and an inspection of the base and edges. Contractor records, density data or other construction records can also matter. A generic product cannot establish which of those conditions produced the crack.

Read the visible pattern before choosing a repair

Fatigue or “alligator” cracking

Fatigue cracking occurs in areas subjected to repeated traffic loading. FHWA describes cracks that may connect into a chicken-wire or alligator-like pattern, often in wheel paths. An interconnected network is materially different from one isolated hairline and deserves an assessment of the pavement structure, drainage and support. Filling the top opening alone does not prove that the underlying distress has been corrected.

Longitudinal cracking

Longitudinal cracks run predominantly parallel to the pavement centerline. Their position matters: a line in a wheel path can have a different classification and significance from one near a lane joint or pavement edge. Record whether the crack is straight or branching, whether it follows a construction joint, and whether its sides are level or displaced.

Transverse cracking

Transverse cracks run across the direction of travel. The crack’s spacing, width, continuity and timing should be documented rather than assumed to indicate one universal cause. A contractor or pavement professional can compare the pattern with the mix, underlying layers and construction conditions.

Block cracking

Block cracking divides the surface into roughly rectangular pieces. Because the pattern covers areas rather than a single narrow line, inspect the whole paved section for additional cracks, oxidation, raveling or loss of surface material. The extent determines whether a localized treatment is technically appropriate.

Edge cracking

Edge cracking occurs along the pavement edge. Inspect the shoulder, drainage path and support beside the asphalt, as well as the edge itself. Water, unsupported margins or movement outside the paved lane may be relevant, but the cited FHWA classification alone does not prove a particular cause on a residential job.

Reflection cracking

Reflection cracks appear when joints or cracks in an underlying pavement or slab show through the new asphalt. FHWA treats cracking at joints in an underlying pavement as a distinct reflection-cracking type. If the new line follows an old joint or patch, the contractor should identify the layer below before recommending a surface-only repair.

Cracking noticed during breakdown or finish rolling

Cracking that appears while the mat is being compacted requires immediate documentation. The Asphalt Institute’s Engineering FAQs answers a question about surface cracking during breakdown and finish rolling with this caution: “Without knowing what the surface cracking looks like, it is hard for us to identify the problem.” That means the pattern, timing and paving conditions should be preserved for inspection instead of covered immediately.

Low or uneven density and thermal segregation

FHWA explains that lower in-place density can increase susceptibility to premature failure through water ingress, raveling and cracking, and identifies thermal segregation as a cause of density nonuniformity. This is a risk mechanism, not proof that poor density caused your crack. Establishing that link requires evidence about the paving operation and the finished pavement; a visual crack alone cannot supply it. FHWA’s background discussion is available in Pavements – Infrared Thermography.

What to document before anyone applies a product

Early documentation protects the useful evidence. Sealant can make the original width, branching and extent harder to evaluate, so wait for an inspection when the crack is part of a new-construction complaint.

  1. Photograph the entire area. Take an overhead image showing the relationship to the driveway, joints, wheel paths and edges.
  2. Take close-ups from a shallow angle. Side lighting can reveal an open gap, depression, raised lip, raveling or loose aggregate that a straight-down photograph misses.
  3. Include a scale. Place a ruler or another identifiable object beside representative cracks and record approximate width and length.
  4. Record timing and conditions. Note the paving date, when the crack was first seen, recent weather, unusual loading and whether the crack is growing.
  5. Describe movement. Write down whether the sides are level, vertically offset, soft, crumbling or moving under traffic or foot pressure. Do not pry open the crack or create damage while checking it.
  6. Map the locations. Mark wheel paths, edges, joints, patches, drains and any areas where several cracks connect.

These steps are practical documentation, not a universal inspection standard. They give the contractor enough context to compare the surface condition with the installation sequence and pavement layout.

Contact the paving contractor before attempting a DIY repair

Ask the company that placed the asphalt to inspect the site in person and provide a written explanation of the likely distress type and proposed correction. Request that the explanation address the crack pattern, location, extent, possible movement, drainage and the condition of the supporting layers.

Keep the contract, invoice, paving date, scope of work, photographs and written communications together. Warranty rights depend on the contract and local law; the technical sources do not establish a universal warranty period, automatic replacement obligation or waiting period for a new driveway.

If the original contractor is unavailable, a local asphalt paving contractor or pavement-assessment professional can perform a site-specific review. Ask what observations support the diagnosis and whether the recommendation treats only the surface or also the base, edge and drainage conditions.

Choosing between filling, sealing, patching and milling

Repair selection depends on crack pattern, severity, movement and the condition of the surrounding pavement. FHWA’s Materials and Procedures for Sealing and Filling Cracks in Asphalt-Surfaced Pavements — Manual of Practice, Part A warns that sealing or filling extensive or severely deteriorated cracking can be uneconomical and technically unsound.

Option Appropriate question What it can and cannot do
Crack filling Is the crack limited, reasonably clean and on otherwise serviceable pavement? Can reduce entry of water and incompressible debris in suitable cracks. It does not establish or repair a weak base, poor compaction or continuing structural movement.
Crack sealing Does the crack need a treatment designed to accommodate expected opening and closing? May limit water and debris intrusion when the crack and pavement meet the material and preparation requirements. Selection must follow the product and professional directions.
Patching Is there localized breakup, a failed area, vertical distress or material loss? Replaces a defined damaged area. The repair limits and depth should be based on the condition found, not simply the visible line.
Milling and replacement Does distress extend through a surface course or recur after superficial repairs? Removes and replaces a designated asphalt section. It may be more suitable than repeated sealing where the surface is broadly distressed.
Deeper rehabilitation Is the pavement moving, extensively cracked or affected by foundation, drainage or layer problems? Addresses conditions below the surface when a top treatment cannot reasonably solve them. The required scope must be determined on site.

The product category sometimes called “asphalt crack filler” or “asphalt crack sealant” is therefore a maintenance option for diagnosed, limited cracks—not a universal cure for a new-paving defect. FHWA’s technical brief, Sealing and Filling Cracks in Asphalt Pavements, describes the maintenance-material category and field evaluations, but does not endorse a retail brand or promise performance on fresh residential asphalt.

A practical repair decision path

  1. Classify the visible condition. Use the pattern and location to distinguish an isolated line from interconnected fatigue, block, edge, reflection or other distress. If cracking occurred during rolling, preserve photographs and paving details for the contractor.
  2. Assess extent and severity. Count affected areas, measure representative widths, and note raveling, loose aggregate, depression, raised edges, vertical offset or movement.
  3. Check the surrounding pavement and support. Look for related cracks, standing water, failed shoulders, joints, patches or soft areas. Do not infer a base failure solely from the presence of one crack.
  4. Obtain the contractor’s written diagnosis. Ask which distress classification fits, what evidence supports it, and whether the recommendation addresses only the surface or a deeper layer.
  5. Use a surface treatment only when the pavement is suitable. For limited cracks on otherwise serviceable asphalt, follow the selected material’s requirements for preparation, cleanliness, temperature and application.
  6. Escalate when the pattern is broad or moving. Widespread, severely deteriorated, recurring or vertically displaced cracking calls for a discussion of patching, milling or deeper rehabilitation rather than repeated cosmetic filling.
  7. Inspect after the repair. Confirm that the treated area is bonded, does not trap loose debris, and has not developed new movement or connected cracking. Keep dated records of the work and observations.

The sources reviewed do not establish a universal number of days to wait after paving before applying sealant. Use the contractor’s diagnosis and the specific product instructions for surface condition, temperature, preparation and cure.

Why a generic filler may fail

  • The crack is a symptom of structural distress. An interconnected wheel-path pattern can indicate repeated-load fatigue; closing the openings does not remove the loads or restore weakened layers.
  • The pavement is moving. Vertical displacement, a depressed edge or recurring separation can reopen a rigid surface treatment.
  • The crack is too extensive or deteriorated. FHWA identifies conditions in which sealing or filling is technically unsound or uneconomical.
  • Water or support problems remain. A treatment at the top cannot by itself correct drainage, unsupported edges or a deficient foundation.
  • The preparation is wrong. Dirt, moisture, unsuitable temperatures or an incompatible material can prevent adhesion. Follow the product’s directions rather than a one-size-fits-all procedure.
  • The wrong section is being treated. Reflection cracking may require investigation of the underlying joint or pavement, while edge cracking requires attention to the margin and adjacent support.

How much does repair cost?

The supplied technical sources do not provide a current consumer price, and a meaningful estimate depends on crack length, access, preparation, material, depth, traffic control and whether patching or milling is required. Obtain an itemized site-specific quotation that separates cleaning and preparation, crack treatment, patching, milling, removal and replacement, drainage or edge work, and any follow-up inspection. Treat a very low price for “filling every crack” cautiously if no one has classified the distress.

What the FHWA crack-sealing study does—and does not—prove

FHWA’s 1999 technical brief reports that four transverse crack-seal test sites and one longitudinal crack-fill test site were built in the United States and Canada between March and August 1991, with 6,710 meters of cracks treated. That figure describes the scale of those field sites; it is not a success rate, a guarantee for a driveway, or evidence that a particular retail product will correct new-construction cracking.

The FHWA manuals are older publications. They remain useful for general distress distinctions and treatment principles, but local specifications, contracts, materials and regulations may differ. A professional should reconcile the general guidance with current site conditions.

Questions to put in writing to your contractor

  • Which crack pattern or distress classification best describes the photographs and the on-site condition?
  • Is the cracking confined to the surface, or is there evidence of movement, reflection, loss of support or deterioration below it?
  • What measurements or observations support the proposed repair?
  • Why is filling or sealing preferable to patching, milling or replacement in this location?
  • What preparation, material, temperature and cure requirements apply?
  • How will the repaired area be monitored, and what condition would trigger additional work?
  • Which contract or local-law provisions govern any warranty or corrective work?

Bottom line for a newly paved driveway

Do not judge the repair by the word “new” or by crack width alone. Photograph and map the condition, preserve it for inspection, and obtain the installer’s explanation. Limited cracks in sound, stable pavement may be appropriate for a correctly selected sealant or filler. Interconnected, widespread, severely deteriorated, vertically displaced or recurring cracking requires a professional decision about patching, milling or deeper rehabilitation. No universal product, cure or waiting period can substitute for that diagnosis.
