Designers featured by Livingetc describe using curved, irregular desks in compact or shared home workspaces for reasons that include avoiding sharp edges, easing a boxy room and fitting a small study. Their projects offer ideas—not proof that a bean desk outperforms a rectangular desk in every room.
What is a bean desk?
A bean desk has a curved, irregular outline; “kidney-shaped desk” is another term for the form. Unlike a conventional rectangle, its contours may widen or narrow along the work surface. The exact shape varies by design, so check the dimensions and usable surface of a specific model rather than relying on the label alone.

Why are designers using bean desks in small rooms?
The Livingetc feature, published 11 October 2026, presents three designers’ perspectives from particular projects. They focus on how a desk’s form relates to the room and its use, not on measured space savings.
A compact space with fewer hard edges
Designer Félix Millory says the compact space he was furnishing called for a desk without edges. He selected Ethnicraft’s Mahogany Dark Brown Boomerang Desk. That choice illustrates a design response to one room; it does not establish that curved desks take up less floor area than rectangular ones.

A squarish room that felt too rigid
Kasia Kronberger, founder of Studio Bosko, uses rounded pieces to break up the geometry of a squarish floor plan. She names Audo Copenhagen’s Eclipse Desk in natural oiled oak. Kronberger also describes the shape as ergonomic, but the feature supplies no measurements or comparative testing to verify an ergonomic advantage.
A small study within a bedroom
Laurie Blumenfeld designed a bespoke bean-shaped desk with a custom ombre stain for a client’s small study within the primary bedroom. It is an example of a tailored design, not evidence that a bean desk will create more usable space in other rooms.

Does a bean desk belong away from the wall?
“Don’t put your desk against the wall” works as a design prompt, not a universal placement rule. A curved desk may suit a room where its outline helps the furniture feel less rigid, but a desk placed against a wall can still be the more practical choice when it preserves a clear route or leaves room for a chair. The Livingetc feature does not compare the floor-space use of a floating bean desk with a rectangular desk against a wall.

Before deciding, mark out the desk footprint and chair movement in the room. Check that the placement leaves a workable path through the space, does not block drawers or doors, and gives you enough room for your screen and other equipment. Judge the layout by those clearances and your routine—not by the desk’s name or silhouette.

What to check before buying
- Footprint and usable surface: Compare the desk’s full width and depth with the room, then check that its curved outline leaves enough practical space for your work.
- Chair and circulation clearance: Allow for pulling out and moving the chair, and preserve access through the room and to nearby doors or drawers.
- Storage and equipment: Check for drawers or cupboards and make sure the surface suits your screen, keyboard and other everyday items.
- Stability and installation: Look for any wall-fixing requirement and follow the product instructions. Habitat’s listing for its Jelly Bean 1 Drawer Office Desk says it must be fixed securely to a wall for stability and safety; that requirement applies to that listed model, not to bean desks generally.
- Load, finish and price: Confirm the stated load information, material and finish, current price, and availability for the exact desk you are considering.
Habitat lists a 25 kg across-surface capacity for its Jelly Bean 1 Drawer Office Desk. This is a retailer-stated specification for that model; check the current Habitat listing for complete product details before purchase.

The examples show why a designer might choose a bean or kidney-shaped desk for a particular room: to soften a boxy scheme, avoid hard edges or create a custom fit. They do not establish a general ergonomic benefit, a quantified reduction in floor-space use, or a like-for-like advantage over rectangular desks. The Livingetc feature provides no comparable dimensions, prices or specifications for the named designer examples.
