A pressure washer that suddenly produces a weak fan or no high-pressure spray usually has a setup, water-supply, nozzle, leak, or trapped-air problem rather than an immediately failed pump. Start with the controls and nozzle, then restore unrestricted inlet water, inspect every connection and seal, and purge air. Only after those checks should you suspect the unloader or pump valves.
Shut the machine down and follow its owner’s manual before disconnecting any pressure-side part. The sequence below applies broadly to electric and gas pressure washers, but nozzle sizes, inlet parts, pressure targets, and service procedures are model-specific.

First decide whether the setting is wrong or the machine has a fault
“Low pressure” can mean two different things. The washer may be operating normally with a detergent or low-pressure setting selected, or it may be failing to build pressure even when configured correctly. A sudden loss and a long-term gradual decline can also point to different causes.
| What you observe | Most useful first check | What it can indicate |
|---|---|---|
| A broad, soft spray begins immediately after changing the wand or tip | Confirm that the lance or adjustable nozzle is in high-pressure mode and install the correct high-pressure tip | Incorrect setting or nozzle selection, not necessarily a mechanical failure |
| Pressure is weak all the time, including with a known-good high-pressure tip | Check supply water, the inlet screen, hose restrictions, and leaks | Insufficient flow reaching the pump, a worn or blocked nozzle, or air entering the system |
| Pressure pulses or surges instead of staying low and steady | Look for air at the inlet, a restricted screen, a kinked hose, or a leaking connection | Interrupted pump feed or trapped air; internal valve trouble is possible if the external checks pass |
| There is little or no pressure despite a full water supply and an unobstructed nozzle | Stop adjusting parts and arrange model-specific service | A faulty unloader, sticking or worn pump valves, or other internal wear |
| Pressure has declined gradually while the washer is used regularly | Inspect the nozzle orifice for wear and compare it with a new, compatible tip | A worn nozzle can let more water through with less resistance |
Do not infer a universal litres-per-minute, gallons-per-minute, or pressure requirement from another machine. The sources reviewed do not establish one target that fits every model; use the specification and procedure in your own manual.

Safety before troubleshooting
- Turn the washer off, disconnect electrical power or stop the engine, close the water supply, and squeeze the trigger to release pressure exactly as the owner’s manual directs.
- Never put a finger or hand over a suspected high-pressure leak. A jet can penetrate skin even when the cut is tiny and difficult to see.
- Keep the gun pointed in a safe direction and keep people, pets, and fragile surfaces away while testing.
- Do not remove a hose, nozzle, filter, or fitting while the pump is running or the system is pressurized.
- If the manual requires a particular tool, seal, filter, or purging sequence, use that procedure rather than a generic substitute.
Step 1: Confirm the high-pressure setup and nozzle
Switch out of detergent or low-pressure mode
Many lances and adjustable nozzles deliberately lower pressure for applying detergent. Move the selector to the high-pressure position, or install the high-pressure tip specified for the job. Briggs & Stratton’s low/no-pressure guidance, updated January 15, 2026, identifies a connected low-pressure nozzle as a common explanation for weak output. Do not assume that a nozzle that physically clicks into the wand is the right one; the angle, orifice, and pressure rating must suit the washer and the task.
Inspect the tip for blockage
With the washer depressurized, remove the nozzle and inspect the opening for grit, paint, scale, or dried detergent. Clean it only by the method and with the tool named in the manual. Forcing an oversized wire through the orifice can damage it and change the spray pattern. Refit the tip securely and test again.
Check for wear, not just dirt
A nozzle can look clean and still be worn. Cat Pumps explains the mechanism this way: “As the nozzle wears the orifice size increases, which produces less resistance.” The larger opening allows flow to pass with less back pressure, so a washer that used to clean effectively may produce a weak spray over time. Compare a suspect tip with a new, model-compatible replacement rather than trying to compensate by turning an unloader screw.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use the correct replacement
Choose a tip whose size and pressure rating are specified for your washer. A tip that is too large can reduce pressure; one that is too small can overload the pump. Because manufacturers use different sizing systems and accessories, the owner’s manual or parts list is the authority. Replace a physically damaged tip instead of attempting to reshape it.

Step 2: Restore an unrestricted water supply
Open the source fully
Make sure the outdoor tap or other approved source is fully open and supplying water before the pump starts. A partly closed valve can leave enough flow for a thin stream but not enough for pressure operation. If the washer is connected through another valve, reel, or quick connector, open and inspect each point in the path.
Examine the inlet hose
Trace the entire garden or inlet hose from the source to the washer. Straighten kinks, remove crushing or sharp bends, and look for internal collapse, blockage, or a split that allows air in. Check that couplers are fully seated and that the hose is not being pinched under a vehicle, door, or reel. Do not substitute a hose or fitting solely because it fits the thread; follow the washer’s stated requirements.
Clean the inlet screen or filter
With the supply off and pressure released, remove and inspect the washer’s inlet screen or filter. Rinse away grit and mineral deposits without damaging the mesh. Simoniz troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends checking the supply and rinsing the inlet filter. If the screen is torn, crushed, or permanently blocked, replace it with the model’s specified part. Cat Pumps warns that a clogged or improperly sized filter can restrict liquid reaching the pump, cause cavitation, and contribute to pump damage.

There is no single hose diameter or water-flow figure that applies to every electric and gas washer. Use the manual for the required supply conditions. If the household source cannot meet that requirement, the washer may remain weak even though the pump itself is serviceable. Never run the pump without the water supply and protection required by the manufacturer.

Step 3: Find leaks and purge trapped air
Inspect every accessible connection
When the machine is off and depressurized, examine the source-hose fitting, washer inlet, high-pressure hose, gun, wand, and nozzle connection. Look for drips, a wet ring, cracked plastic, or a fitting that moves when it should be tight. Damaged O-rings can allow water out and air in. Tighten connections only as much as the manual permits; excessive force can split a housing or flatten a seal.
Replace damaged seals and hoses
Use replacement O-rings, washers, and hoses that match the model and pressure rating. A general-purpose seal may swell, leak, or fail under pressure. If a hose has a cut, blister, exposed reinforcement, or damaged coupling, replace it rather than wrapping it with tape.
Purge the air correctly
Air in the inlet line can make the spray weak or cause a pulsing output. Follow the washer’s own purging instructions. Simoniz describes a general approach for its electric machines: with the machine off, allow water to run through the system until a steady, air-free flow emerges. That description is not a universal procedure; some models specify a different sequence, so the manual takes precedence. Reconnect the nozzle only after the flow is steady if the instructions call for that order.

Open the water supply, start the washer only as directed, and test briefly in a safe direction. If pressure returns after straightening the hose, cleaning the screen, replacing the tip, or purging air, stop there. Changing several parts at once makes it harder to identify a recurring restriction or leak.

Use the symptom to choose the next check
Weak but steady spray
Reconfirm high-pressure mode and nozzle size first. Then verify full inlet flow, a clean screen, and an undamaged hose. A steady weak stream with no visible leak often points to a worn or oversized nozzle or to insufficient water reaching the pump.
Fluctuating or pulsing spray
Prioritize air entry and inlet restrictions: inspect O-rings and couplers, straighten the hose, clean the screen, and purge the system. If the supply remains steady and the symptom continues with a clean, correct nozzle, internal pump valves or the unloader may need diagnosis.
No pressure after the external checks
Stop repeated tests that could run the pump without adequate water. Record the model, fuel or electrical version, the nozzle used, and the checks already completed. Move to the service decision below rather than making an arbitrary internal adjustment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA sudden loss immediately after changing accessories
Return to the previous nozzle or wand setting and verify that the new accessory is approved for that washer. A low-pressure detergent tip, an incorrectly sized tip, or a partially seated quick connector can mimic a failed pump.

When an unloader or pump fault is plausible
What the unloader does
Cat Pumps describes an unloader as “a pressure control valve that sets and maintains system pressure.” It routes flow between the wand and the bypass path when the trigger is released or pressure reaches the control point. If it sticks, is damaged, or is incorrectly adjusted, the washer may fail to build pressure or may behave erratically.
Why generic adjustment advice is risky
Unloader designs, springs, locknuts, and adjustment procedures vary by model. Husqvarna’s pressure-loss guidance warns that adjustments should be made only in tiny increments and that setting pressure too high can damage the unloader and other internal components. Do not turn an adjustment screw at random, remove a locknut, or bypass a relief device to chase a pressure reading. A setting that appears to restore spray can create a dangerous over-pressure condition.
Pump valves and internal wear
Sticking, worn, or damaged pump valves can reduce the pump’s ability to generate pressure even when water reaches it. Internal wear may also follow prolonged operation with a clogged filter, restricted inlet, or cavitation. Diagnosing these parts normally requires model-specific service information, pressure testing, and disassembly. The PWP cold-water pressure-washer manual and other repair guidance should be treated as applicable only when they match your exact model; a procedure for another pump is not a safe substitute.
Decide whether to clean, replace, or seek service
| Condition | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Debris is visible in a compatible nozzle or inlet screen, and the part is undamaged | Clean it using the manual’s method, then retest | The restriction may be removable without replacing a serviceable part |
| Nozzle or screen is cracked, distorted, torn, or permanently blocked | Install the exact model-compatible replacement | Cleaning cannot restore the intended opening or filtration |
| Nozzle is clean but the spray has gradually weakened | Compare with a correctly sized new tip and replace if worn | Wear enlarges the orifice and lowers resistance |
| Hose, O-ring, or fitting leaks or allows air in | Replace the damaged model-rated component and purge air | Loss of water or air entry interrupts pump feed |
| External checks pass, but pressure remains low or pulses | Use authorized or model-qualified service | An unloader, pump valve, or another internal component may be at fault |
When to stop troubleshooting and arrange service
Contact the manufacturer’s authorized support or a qualified repair provider when the correct high-pressure setup, water supply, inlet screen, hose, connections, seals, and air-purge procedure do not restore output. Briggs & Stratton’s January 15, 2026, low/no-pressure guidance and DEWALT support guidance published December 22, 2020, both direct owners to the manual or authorized service when basic checks do not solve the problem. Husqvarna, Cat Pumps, Simoniz, and other manufacturers likewise describe internal unloader and pump faults as service matters rather than universal homeowner adjustments.
Have the model and serial number ready. Tell the technician whether the pressure is continuously low, fluctuates, or disappeared suddenly; which nozzle was installed; whether the inlet screen was cleaned; whether any O-ring or hose leaked; and whether purging changed the symptom. This information helps prevent repeating the same external checks and helps the provider select the correct parts and procedure.
Quick Recap
Model-specific cautions that prevent repeat failures
- Keep the owner’s manual with the machine and follow its shutdown, depressurization, nozzle-cleaning, and air-purging instructions.
- Use only nozzle tips, inlet screens, filters, hoses, O-rings, and fittings identified as compatible with the make and model.
- Do not assume a pressure or water-flow number from a different washer, even if the engines, motors, or connectors look similar.
- Do not operate with a restricted inlet or without the required water supply; cavitation can damage the pump.
- Do not increase an unloader setting to compensate for a worn nozzle, a clogged screen, or a weak supply.
- If a manual’s procedure conflicts with a generic troubleshooting description, use the manual for that exact machine.
A compact troubleshooting checklist
- Shut down, isolate power or fuel, close the water, and depressurize according to the manual.
- Set the lance or adjustable nozzle to high pressure.
- Install a clean, correctly sized, compatible high-pressure tip.
- Open the water source fully and inspect the entire inlet hose for kinks, blockage, crushing, or leaks.
- Remove and rinse the inlet screen; replace it if damaged or if the parts information requires replacement.
- Inspect the gun, wand, hose, and fittings for leaks, damaged O-rings, and loose or cracked connections.
- Repair or replace damaged model-rated seals and hoses.
- Purge trapped air using the exact procedure in the owner’s manual.
- Retest briefly and note whether the spray is steady, pulsing, or absent.
- If pressure is still low, avoid arbitrary unloader adjustment and arrange authorized, model-specific service.
