A battery snow blower that “loses power” may be suffering from a low or poorly seated battery, temperature protection, an overload, blocked cooling vents, wet electrical contacts, or a mechanical blockage. It may also be running normally while a clogged chute or heavy, wet snow prevents discharge. Start by identifying the exact symptom, then use the shutdown, battery, temperature and load checks for your model. The Toro 39921 manual and EGO Power+ support guidance show why temperature limits, controls and battery compatibility cannot be assumed across brands.
Identify what “loses power” means
Different symptoms point to different systems. A machine that stops completely has a different first check from one that runs continuously but throws a weak stream. Classify the problem before removing covers or ordering parts.

These are troubleshooting categories, not a universal failure-rate chart. Official sources reviewed for the Toro 39921 and EGO products do not publish prevalence statistics. A temperature cutoff is a product specification, not evidence that a certain percentage of machines fail that way.
Stops while you are clearing
1. Restore charge and verify the battery latch
On the Toro 39921, the manual’s first checks are to charge the battery and remove and reinstall it until it is fully latched. A pack that looks inserted but is not locked can interrupt current under load. Switch the machine off before handling the pack, and use only the battery and charger approved for your model.

2. Consider temperature protection
Battery-management electronics can stop discharge when the cells are too cold or too hot. Move the pack to a dry location within the temperature range in your exact manual and allow it to stabilize naturally. Do not heat a pack with a heater, hair dryer or open flame, and do not put a hot battery into snow or water to cool it.
The Toro 39921 manual specifies charging and storage between 5°C (41°F) and 40°C (104°F). It specifies machine use between -30°C (-22°F) and 23°C (73°F), and machine storage between -30°C (-22°F) and 49°C (120°F). These values apply to that model and its manual; they are not general limits for every battery snow blower.
EGO describes a different set of limits and says its figures refer to battery-cell temperature, not simply outdoor air temperature. Its support guidance says the battery can discharge down to -10°C, but charging is not possible at that cell temperature; above 70°C, the battery-management system prevents discharge. EGO also says its snow blower can operate at -20°C because the battery-port housing insulates the pack. Use those numbers only for the EGO products covered by that guidance.

3. Reset after a high-current event
The Toro troubleshooting instructions identify a reached high-amperage limit as a possible reason for stopping. Release the trigger and press it again as the manual directs, but only after the auger and rotor have stopped and you are in a safe position. If the machine repeatedly trips while taking a normal, shallow pass, treat the repeated trip as a fault signal rather than continually resetting it.
4. Dry electrical contacts safely
Moisture on battery leads can interrupt operation. Remove the battery according to the manual, move the equipment to a dry place and allow the contacts to dry. Do not scrape terminals with metal tools or spray an unapproved solvent into the battery bay. Inspect for corrosion, deformation or heat damage; a damaged connector needs manufacturer or authorized service attention.

5. Stop if the pack or electrical system is damaged
A swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot or physically damaged lithium-ion pack should not be charged or used. Do not open the pack, bridge its contacts or substitute cells. The Toro manual directs replacement of a damaged pack and referral of an unresolved electrical problem to an authorized dealer. Keep the pack away from combustible materials while arranging service and follow local battery-disposal rules.
When it runs but cannot reach full power
Low usable capacity
A “full” indication does not guarantee that a battery can deliver normal current under load. Charge it fully with the approved charger, let the charge cycle finish, and test the machine with a modest snow load. If it immediately falls back to reduced output or shuts down, compare the result with a known-good, approved pack only if your manufacturer allows that diagnostic swap.

The Toro 39921 troubleshooting section lists blocked air vents as a cause of failure to reach full power. Switch off, remove the battery and clear packed snow, ice and debris from the vents using the method permitted by the manual. Never clean around moving components with the battery installed. Do not insert a rod deep into a motor housing or use compressed air in a way that drives water or grit farther inside.
Workload exceeding the machine’s design
Deep snow, a wide bite and forceful pushing can make a healthy system draw more current than it can sustain. Take a narrower swath, move more slowly and let the auger feed itself instead of leaning your body weight into the handle. If the motor recovers when the load is reduced, the change is diagnostic: the original pass was too demanding for the conditions, even if no component is defective.
Why runtime can fall sharply
Cold-soaked batteries
Cold reduces the amount of energy a lithium-ion pack can deliver until its cells warm. Store and charge the battery only within the model’s permitted range, then let it reach the manufacturer’s recommended condition before starting. A pack that was left overnight in sub-freezing conditions may show less practical runtime than the same pack kept at a suitable indoor temperature.

Overloading and technique
Toro identifies an overloaded machine as a cause of rapid discharge. Heavy, wet snow, deep drifts, repeated full-width passes and pushing too hard all increase current demand. Clear in overlapping narrow passes, keep the discharge path open and slow down when the motor tone changes. Avoid repeatedly forcing the auger into a compacted ridge; back out, reduce the bite and approach again.

Battery capacity gradually declines with use and age, but a short-runtime report alone does not prove that the pack is worn out. First rule out temperature and workload. If replacement becomes necessary, compare exact machine compatibility and manufacturer approval, claimed capacity or runtime, charger compatibility, permitted charging temperature, warranty and service support, and total cost. A larger-capacity pack can increase runtime only when it is an approved, compatible pack for that machine; there is no universal upgrade standard.
For the Toro 39921, the manual names battery pack model 66810 and charger model 88602. Those identifiers are not a compatibility list for other Toro machines or other brands. Verify the part number and charger requirements in your own manual or through an authorized parts channel before purchase.
When the motor runs but snow barely exits
Reduce the snow load first
Toro lists too much snow per pass, overloading and extremely heavy or wet snow as causes of poor discharge. Narrow the clearing width, reduce travel speed and avoid forcing the machine forward. Wet snow can cling to the chute and auger housing even when the motor sounds normal. If a lighter pass restores the throw distance, continue with that technique rather than treating the battery as failed.
Clear a plugged discharge chute without injury
A rotating rotor can move unexpectedly while a blockage is being removed. Toro’s manual states: “Never use your hands to clean out the discharge chute.” Treat the chute as energized until the complete shutdown sequence is finished.

- Stop the machine and switch off the motor and auger using the controls specified for your model.
- Remove the electric-start button if your machine uses one.
- Remove the battery pack or packs.
- Wait for all movement to stop. The Toro 39921 procedure specifies waiting 10 seconds for the rotor blades; EGO likewise says to wait until the auger stops rotating.
- Use the supplied clean-out tool, a suitable wooden rod or a commercially available chute-clearing tool approved for the machine. Keep the tool outside the chute’s moving mechanism and clear from the side where possible.
- Inspect the opening, reinstall the battery only after the area is clear, and restart from a safe stance.
Many machines include a clean-out tool, so check the manual and the machine before buying one. A tool marketed as a “snow blower chute clean-out tool” is useful only if its shape and reach suit your machine; material or length claims alone do not establish safety. Never improvise with a hand, foot, metal bar or another object that could damage the rotor or become a projectile.
Inspect the auger/impeller drive only when the manual permits
If the chute is clear and a reduced load still produces weak discharge, Toro lists a loose, displaced, worn or broken auger/impeller drive belt as another possibility. Belt access, adjustment and replacement are model-specific. Remove the battery before any inspection allowed by the manual, keep hands away from pinch points and do not operate with a guard removed. If the belt is damaged or the procedure requires opening a drive housing, use the exact parts list or an authorized dealer rather than guessing at a belt size.
A model-safe troubleshooting sequence
Use this order because it separates low-risk operating causes from electrical and mechanical faults.
- Describe the symptom. Record whether the machine stops, slows, has short runtime or fails to throw snow. Note the snow’s depth and whether it is dry, wet or compacted.
- Shut down before touching anything. Release the controls, remove the start control where applicable, remove the battery and wait for all rotation to stop.
- Check the simple energy causes. Fully charge with the approved charger, reinstall until latched and inspect for visible damage or wet contacts.
- Check temperature against the exact manual. Do not substitute another brand’s limits. Let a cold or hot pack stabilize in a dry location rather than forcing a charge or discharge.
- Reduce the load. Use a narrower swath, slower pace and less forward force. Test whether the machine regains normal output under a light pass.
- Clear airflow and the chute safely. With the battery removed, clear vents. If discharge is restricted, complete the full chute-clearing sequence; never reach into the opening.
- Escalate persistent faults. Repeated high-current trips, a damaged pack, burning smell, abnormal heat, a belt fault or an electrical problem requires the manufacturer’s authorized service channel.
What not to assume
- Do not assume every lithium-ion battery has the same temperature limits. The Toro 39921 and EGO guidance differ in both values and definitions.
- Do not assume a larger battery fits. Physical fit, electronic communication, voltage and charger approval all matter.
- Do not call every weak snow stream a battery failure. A blocked chute or wet snow can leave the motor running while preventing discharge.
- Do not keep resetting an overload. Reduce the bite and investigate if the trip repeats.
- Do not open a lithium-ion pack or bypass its protection. Pack-level repairs require qualified service equipment and procedures.
- Do not clean a chute with the battery installed. Stored energy and rotating parts make this an injury hazard.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Arrange authorized service when the battery is damaged, the machine repeatedly stops after charge, seating, temperature and load checks, or an electrical fault remains unexplained. Service is also appropriate for a loose or broken auger/impeller belt when the model’s procedure is not clearly within owner maintenance. Provide the technician with the model number, battery and charger identifiers, the outdoor temperature, snow condition, whether the chute was clear and exactly what happened before the stop. That information is more useful than simply reporting “low power.”
If the machine has been exposed to water beyond normal snow use, allow it to dry as the manual directs and do not charge a wet pack. If you smell burning insulation, see smoke or feel abnormal heat, move away, keep people clear and contact emergency services if there is an immediate fire risk. Do not transport a visibly damaged lithium-ion battery in a passenger compartment.

Choosing replacement parts without creating a new fault
Battery and charger
Use the exact model and part-number information in the manual. For the Toro 39921, that means checking the listed 66810 pack and 88602 charger against the machine’s current documentation and authorized parts channel. A third-party pack that fits the bay may still have incompatible electronics or charging requirements. Confirm that the replacement is approved for the machine, that the charger is approved for that pack and that the warranty or service path is clear.
Clean-out tool
First check whether the machine already includes a tool. If it does not, select one intended for the machine’s chute and follow the same battery-removal and waiting procedure every time. A generic tool is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s instructions.
Drive belt
Do not buy by appearance alone. Belt length, profile, tension and guarding vary by model, and the reviewed information does not establish a universal part number for the Toro 39921 or other machines. Use the exact parts list or an authorized service source after confirming that poor discharge is not caused by load or a clog.

Final diagnostic perspective
Most useful troubleshooting begins with the least invasive explanations: charge, seating, temperature, airflow and workload. A machine that runs but throws poorly deserves a chute and load check before a battery purchase. Product-specific limits then determine what is safe: Toro’s 39921 values and EGO’s cell-temperature guidance are not interchangeable. When those checks do not explain the behavior, or when a pack, connector or drive component is damaged, stop operating the blower and use authorized service rather than improvising a lithium-ion or rotating-part repair.
