Independent testing makes the Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS and Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL useful reference points, but your measurements, configuration needs, energy data, local service, and budget should determine the final choice.
This guide is primarily for U.S. shoppers. Some models discussed in the original UK-oriented buying guide may not be sold in the United States, so verify every model number, dimension, warranty, electrical and water requirement, retailer listing, and service network before ordering.
The best refrigerator is not necessarily the one with the most features or the highest test score. It is the model that fits your kitchen and delivery route, gives your household enough usable storage, keeps food at consistent temperatures, and has service and running costs you can live with.

Independent testing provides useful reference points. RTINGS currently identifies the Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS as one of its best-tested refrigerators, while the Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL is presented as a less expensive alternative with strong refrigeration performance. Those results are not a universal buying verdict: both capacity and service availability can change the answer, and the models may not be available in every country.
This guide is primarily localized for U.S. shoppers. The original guide behind this topic is UK-oriented, so its liter measurements, model numbers, retailer availability, warranty coverage, electrical requirements, and service networks must not be assumed to apply in the United States.

Our quick recommendations
| Best for | Starting point | Why consider it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strong all-round performance | Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS | Independent testing reports consistent temperatures, good food-preservation performance, and separate cooling systems. | It is counter-depth, so interior capacity is more limited than in many standard-depth alternatives. Confirm current U.S. stock, price, dimensions, and service coverage. |
| Strong performance at a potentially lower price tier | Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL | RTINGS reports good overall refrigeration performance, consistent temperatures, and dual-evaporator cooling. | Check local service coverage and decide whether the dispenser and ice configuration suits your household. |
| Premium convenience and entertaining | A feature-heavy French-door refrigerator, such as the LG InstaView Door-in-Door GSXV90MCDE as a design example | Door-in-door access, water and ice dispensing, specialty ice, flexible storage, and app controls can be convenient. | The cited LG model is a UK-market example, not a U.S. recommendation. Large dimensions, plumbing, complexity, and energy use need careful checking. |
| Low complexity and energy-conscious value | A right-sized ENERGY STAR top-freezer model | Top-freezer refrigerators generally use less energy than bottom-freezer and side-by-side designs, and they are often simpler. | Choose from the current ENERGY STAR certified-product database rather than relying on an old roundup. |
1. Measure the kitchen before comparing refrigerators
A refrigerator that cannot pass through the house or open fully in its final position is the wrong refrigerator, regardless of its features. Measure all of the following:
- The cabinet opening’s maximum width, height, and depth.
- Baseboards, trim, countertops, islands, radiators, and other obstructions.
- Every doorway, hallway, stairway, elevator, and turn on the delivery route.
- The clearance required behind and above the unit for ventilation.
- The space needed for doors, shelves, and freezer drawers to open without hitting a wall or island.
Do not use the cabinet opening alone. Tom’s Guide’s refrigerator measuring guidance emphasizes checking the entire delivery route, airflow clearance, and door and drawer operation. Ask the retailer for the manufacturer’s installation drawing, not just the headline dimensions.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Also decide whether you need standard-depth or counter-depth. A counter-depth refrigerator usually protrudes less into the kitchen and can make a compact or carefully planned kitchen feel less crowded. The trade-off is often less usable interior storage. The Bosch B36CT80SNS is a useful example: its counter-depth construction helps it sit more neatly with cabinetry, but it cannot hold as much as some larger standard-depth models.
2. Choose the configuration around how you shop
French-door
French-door refrigerators put wide fresh-food shelves at eye level and usually place the freezer below. They work well for households storing large platters, wide containers, and fresh produce. They can, however, be wide, expensive, and mechanically complex, particularly when they include through-the-door ice and water.
Side-by-side
Side-by-side models provide convenient vertical access to both compartments and typically need less door-swing space than a wide single-door design. Their shelves are narrower, though, which can make large trays, pizza boxes, and wide pans awkward to store.
Top-freezer
Top-freezer refrigerators are generally the sensible choice when simplicity, price, and energy use matter more than premium convenience. ENERGY STAR says top-freezer models tend to use the least energy compared with bottom-freezer and side-by-side configurations. Their limitation is that the freezer is at eye level while fresh food sits below, and they may offer less flexible organization.
Bottom-freezer
Bottom-freezer models keep frequently accessed refrigerator food higher up and are a practical middle ground. They often cost more and may use more energy than top-freezer models, but the layout can be worthwhile for households that open the fresh-food compartment far more often than the freezer.
3. Judge cooling performance, not the feature list
Temperature consistency should be a primary buying criterion. A refrigerator may have a large screen, an app, specialty ice, and multiple modes, but those features do not compensate for warm spots, excessive temperature swings, or poor produce preservation.

RTINGS says its refrigerator testing includes temperature uniformity, ice-making performance, produce preservation, actual storage capacity, and parts availability. Good Housekeeping describes a complementary program that examines cooling consistency, cold spots, food preservation, controls, ergonomics, storage flexibility, and real-world use in laboratories, test kitchens, and consumer homes. Good Housekeeping reports testing more than 50 refrigerators, including more than 20 since 2019.
Look for evidence about:
- Whether temperatures remain stable after the door is opened frequently.
- Cold spots that could freeze delicate food.
- How evenly the freezer operates.
- Whether crisper drawers help produce remain fresh in practical use.
- How quickly the unit recovers after a large grocery load.
Are dual evaporators worth it?
Separate evaporators or cooling systems can isolate the refrigerator and freezer climates and may reduce odor transfer. RTINGS specifically highlights the Bosch’s separate compressors and evaporators and describes the Samsung as using dual-evaporator cooling. This is a meaningful design advantage, but it is not a guarantee that every food will last longer in every home.

The trade-off is additional hardware. More cooling components can mean more potential repair points and higher repair complexity. Treat dual evaporation as one factor alongside temperature results, service availability, noise, price, and warranty terms.
4. Compare usable storage, not advertised capacity
The advertised cubic-foot or liter figure is only a starting point. Two refrigerators with similar headline capacity can feel very different once shelves, ice makers, drawers, and door bins are taken into account.
Before buying, inspect:
- Whether a tall bottle or milk container fits upright.
- Door-bin depth and the weight those bins can support.
- Adjustable shelf positions and whether shelves slide or fold.
- Crisper-drawer width, height, and humidity controls.
- Freezer-drawer organization and access to food at the bottom.
- How much room the ice maker occupies inside the refrigerator or freezer.
- Whether a wide roasting pan, party platter, or pizza box will fit.
Good Housekeeping’s testing considers adjustable shelving and flexible storage for awkward items. The Tech Advisor guide also examines door racks, humidity drawers, sliding shelves, and selectable storage zones. Those details are often more useful to a household than a small difference in the capacity number.
5. Pay only for features your household will use
Water and ice dispensers
Dispensers are convenient, especially for families and frequent entertainers. They also add plumbing requirements, filters, valves, tubing, and potential leak or repair points. Confirm whether the installation location has a suitable water line and whether filter replacements are readily available for the exact model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSpecialty and craft ice
Automatic specialty ice can be worthwhile if you regularly entertain or prefer a particular type of ice. The LG example discussed in the original guide includes a craft-ice maker. If you rarely use it, the additional cost, space, noise, maintenance, and complexity may not be justified.
Convertible compartments
A convertible zone can change between refrigerator and freezer use, which is helpful during holidays, parties, or seasonal changes in shopping habits. Verify the actual capacity in each mode and understand whether converting the compartment affects the available freezer space elsewhere.

Humidity-controlled drawers
Humidity controls can help separate produce with different storage needs, but drawer design and real temperature and humidity behavior still matter. A refrigerator with a nominal humidity setting is not automatically better at preserving food; independent testing and sensible loading are more meaningful.
Fast cooling and freezing
These modes can help after loading a large grocery shop. They should supplement, not replace, choosing a correctly sized refrigerator and avoiding overloading it. Check how long each mode runs and whether it increases energy consumption.

Apps and smart controls
Remote temperature changes, open-door alerts, diagnostics, and inventory tools may be useful. They should remain secondary. Do not let an app outweigh cooling performance, physical fit, serviceability, energy data, or purchase price. A refrigerator should continue to perform its basic job even if the app is discontinued, the wireless network changes, or you never connect it.
6. Include energy use in the purchase price
ENERGY STAR says certified refrigerators are about 9% more energy efficient than models meeting the federal minimum standard. It also recommends buying an appropriately sized unit, considering top-freezer configurations, checking refrigerant global-warming-potential information where disclosed, replacing very old refrigerators, and recycling the old appliance.
Do not assume that a larger refrigerator with an efficient rating will use less electricity than a smaller, simpler model. Size and features still matter. Use the actual model’s EnergyGuide label to compare estimated annual energy use and operating cost. The estimate depends on the assumptions behind the label and your local electricity rate, so it is not a promise of your household bill.
The U.S. Department of Energy and FEMP provide efficiency guidance and a product-efficiency pathway for residential refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers. Use current ENERGY STAR certification and model-specific EnergyGuide information rather than repeating a generic annual-cost figure across different sizes.
7. Serviceability can matter more than a clever feature
A refrigerator is a major appliance with a long ownership horizon. Before ordering, verify:
- The manufacturer’s U.S. warranty and what labor, sealed-system, compressor, ice-maker, and electronics coverage actually means.
- Authorized service availability in your area.
- Whether common parts are available and how repairs are scheduled.
- The return period and who pays for removal if the unit arrives damaged or does not fit.
- Delivery, installation, water-line connection, old-appliance removal, and recycling charges.
RTINGS includes parts availability in its testing framework and discusses Bosch’s service network in relation to the B36CT80SNS. That is useful evidence for evaluating a model, but it should not be generalized to every brand, region, or future service situation.

What should you buy?
Choose the Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS if its counter-depth format, capacity, current U.S. price, and local service support suit your kitchen. Consider the Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL if you want strong reported cooling performance and dual-evaporator design at a potentially lower tier, but investigate service coverage and dispenser preferences first.
Choose a feature-rich French-door model only when its door-in-door access, ice, water, flexible compartments, or app features solve a real problem. The LG InstaView Door-in-Door GSXV90MCDE is useful as an illustration of that category, but its UK-market specification should not be treated as a U.S. buying recommendation.
For many households, the smartest answer remains a properly sized ENERGY STAR top-freezer refrigerator. It may not be the most glamorous option, but it can provide good value, lower complexity, and comparatively restrained energy use. Whatever configuration you choose, start with the building constraints: measure first, then compare cooling, storage, energy, service, and only finally the premium conveniences.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best type of refrigerator to buy?
For many households, a right-sized ENERGY STAR top-freezer refrigerator is the best value and simplest choice. If you need wide fresh-food shelves and a bottom freezer, compare French-door models such as the Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS or Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL, subject to current U.S. availability and service coverage.
Is a counter-depth refrigerator worth it?
Counter-depth models generally protrude less from the cabinets, but they often sacrifice usable interior capacity. Measure the opening, delivery route, ventilation space, and door and drawer clearance before choosing one.
Are refrigerators with dual evaporators better?
Dual evaporators can help separate refrigerator and freezer climates and may reduce odor transfer. They are a useful design feature, not a guarantee of longer food life, and they can add hardware and repair complexity.
Does an ENERGY STAR refrigerator save money?
Yes, if the refrigerator is correctly sized for the household and the current model is ENERGY STAR certified. Compare the exact unit’s EnergyGuide annual energy use and estimated operating cost rather than relying on a general claim.
Should you get a refrigerator with a water and ice dispenser?
A dispenser requires suitable plumbing and adds components that may need maintenance or repair. It is most worthwhile when your household regularly uses filtered water or ice; otherwise, an internal or manual alternative may be simpler.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the refrigerator that fits the room and delivery route, preserves food consistently, offers genuinely usable storage, and has acceptable energy and service costs. Independent test results make the Bosch 800 Series B36CT80SNS and Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL useful reference points, but current U.S. dimensions, availability, EnergyGuide data, warranty, and local service must decide the final purchase.
