Which Construction Trades Are in Demand, and What Do They Pay? (2025–2035 U.S. Outlook)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HVAC mechanics and installers, electricians, and plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters are among the strongest-demand construction trades in the latest U.S. projections. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects construction and extraction occupations to grow 5.1% from 2025 through 2035, faster than the 3% projection for all occupations. The group had a May 2025 median annual wage of $59,540 and is expected to average about 587,000 openings per year.

Those figures describe national occupations, not guaranteed starting salaries or a job offer in your area. The best trade for you depends on local demand, licensing, training time, work conditions, and whether you value faster percentage growth, a large number of openings, or higher typical earnings.

Which construction trades are most in demand?

Demand is strongest when you look at several measures together: projected employment growth, the number of annual openings, local hiring conditions, and the skills required to enter. A high growth percentage does not automatically mean the most jobs, because a small occupation can grow quickly while a much larger occupation creates more openings.

BLS’s national projection for the broad construction and extraction group is 5.1% growth between 2025 and 2035, compared with 3% for all occupations. Its estimate of 587,000 average annual openings includes replacement openings when people retire, change occupations, or otherwise leave—not only newly created positions. The following occupations illustrate the main choices; they are not a complete list of construction careers.

National comparison of selected trades

Occupation Projected growth, 2025–35 May 2025 median annual pay How to read the figure
HVAC mechanics and installers 11% $61,010 Fastest growth among these examples. BLS cites commercial construction, including data centers, residential building, and increasingly sophisticated climate-control systems.
Electricians 9% $63,190 Strong projected growth and median pay above the construction-and-extraction group median.
Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters 7% $63,800 Demand comes from new construction plus maintenance and repair of existing plumbing systems.
Construction laborers and helpers 6% $46,680 A broad entry route with about 137,000 average annual openings for the combined occupation group.
Carpenters 4% $60,580 Growth is roughly in line with the all-occupation projection, but the occupation is large and has many openings.

The pay figures are national medians for May 2025. The growth figures cover 2025–35, so they are different measures over different reference periods. A median is the midpoint of reported earnings: half of workers earned more and half earned less. It is not an apprentice rate, a first-year wage, a local offer, or a promise of what one individual will earn.

How much do electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, carpenters, and laborers make?

Electricians

Electricians had a May 2025 national median annual wage of $63,190, with projected employment growth of 9% from 2025 to 2035. Electricians install, maintain, test, and repair wiring, equipment, controls, and electrical systems in homes, commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and construction projects. The work combines code knowledge with careful measurement and troubleshooting.

Actual earnings vary with location, specialty, licensing level, union or nonunion employment, overtime, shift work, and experience. An apprentice generally earns less than a fully trained electrician while completing supervised work and classroom instruction. Earnings usually rise as the apprentice records experience and qualifies for higher-level work, but the exact progression is set by the employer, collective agreement, program, and jurisdiction.

Plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters

This combined occupation had a May 2025 national median annual wage of $63,800 and projected growth of 7% through 2035. BLS says demand will come from new construction and the need to maintain and repair plumbing systems in existing residences and other buildings. Plumbers commonly work on water supply, drainage, fixtures, and service calls; pipefitters and steamfitters work on piping that can carry water, chemicals, gases, or steam in residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

Schedules can be less predictable than a standard daytime construction shift. Emergency repairs may require nights, weekends, or on-call work. Licensing and the scope of work allowed at each level are controlled by state or local rules, so the national median cannot tell you what a particular license will pay in your jurisdiction.

HVAC mechanics and installers

HVAC mechanics and installers showed the highest projected growth among the examples at 11% for 2025–35, with a May 2025 median annual wage of $61,010. BLS links the outlook to commercial construction such as data centers, continued residential building, and increasingly sophisticated climate-control systems.

HVAC work can include installing equipment, connecting controls, charging or recovering refrigerants, testing airflow, diagnosing electrical and mechanical faults, and servicing systems in occupied buildings. Outdoor work, cramped mechanical spaces, hot or cold conditions, and seasonal peaks are common possibilities. Employers may value electrical, controls, refrigeration, and building-automation skills differently, so the local market determines which specialization is most useful.

Carpenters

Carpenters had a May 2025 median annual wage of $60,580 and projected growth of 4% from 2025 to 2035. That growth rate is close to the 3% projection for all occupations, but carpentry remains a large occupation with many annual openings. Carpenters may work on framing, formwork, interior systems, roofing components, finish work, remodeling, or specialized commercial construction.

Because carpentry covers many specialties, two workers with the same occupational title can have very different schedules and pay. Residential remodeling, commercial interiors, concrete formwork, and industrial maintenance require different tools and experience. Physical stamina, safe use of saws and other equipment, accurate layout, and the ability to read plans are core capabilities.

Construction laborers and helpers

Construction laborers and helpers had a May 2025 median annual wage of $46,680. BLS projects 6% growth from 2025 to 2035 and about 137,000 average annual openings for the combined group. This is often the broadest entry point: workers may prepare sites, move materials, assist skilled tradespeople, operate basic equipment, perform cleanup, or learn a specialty through supervised tasks.

The work is frequently outdoors and physically demanding. Lifting, bending, climbing, noise, dust, weather exposure, and changing job sites are possible. The lower national median compared with the featured skilled trades reflects the broad occupation and its entry-level roles; it does not establish what a worker will earn after moving into a licensed or specialized trade.

What “in demand” means—and what the numbers do not tell you

Growth percentage versus number of jobs

Projected growth is a rate, not a headcount. HVAC’s 11% projection is the fastest in this comparison, while carpentry’s 4% projection is slower, yet carpentry’s larger existing workforce can generate substantial replacement hiring. The 587,000 annual openings figure applies to the broad construction and extraction group, and the 137,000 figure applies to construction laborers and helpers; the cited national figures do not establish comparable annual-opening totals for each other occupation in the table.

Replacement openings

Openings include jobs created when workers leave an occupation, not just net new positions. A trade can offer steady hiring even when its total employment grows modestly because employers must replace retirees, career changers, and people who move to other work.

National medians versus your paycheck

National occupational medians do not account for local wage levels, overtime, travel pay, per diem, bonuses, self-employment revenue, seasonal layoffs, or differences between union and nonunion jobs. They also combine workers at different experience levels. Use them to compare occupations broadly, then check state and metropolitan estimates before making a career or relocation decision.

Training, apprenticeships, and licensing

Apprenticeship is a common skilled-trade route

Many electricians, plumbers, pipefitters, steamfitters, and HVAC workers enter through an apprenticeship that combines paid, supervised work with related technical instruction. Apprentices typically start below the fully trained trade wage and progress as they demonstrate skills and complete required hours or coursework. Program length, wage steps, fees, classroom schedules, and eligibility rules vary.

Laborer-to-trade progression

A laborer or helper position can provide exposure to several trades and help you identify a specialty. Ask supervisors which tasks count toward a formal apprenticeship, whether the employer supports classroom attendance, and what safety or basic-skills credentials are expected. Job experience alone does not automatically confer a license or apprenticeship credit; the relevant program or authority decides what counts.

Licensing and jurisdictional rules

Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC licensing requirements differ by state and sometimes by city or county. Rules can specify supervised hours, examinations, permits, continuing education, or separate credentials for contractors and individual workers. Before enrolling or accepting a job, verify the current requirements with the licensing authority in the place where you intend to work. Do not assume that a credential from one jurisdiction transfers automatically to another.

Work conditions to weigh before choosing a trade

  • Physical demands: Construction can involve ladders, kneeling, lifting, repetitive tool use, and work in heat, cold, dust, or noise. Laborer and helper roles are often especially strenuous.
  • Schedule: Plumbing and HVAC service can include nights, weekends, seasonal surges, or emergency call-outs. New-build projects may follow a fixed site schedule but can change with weather and sequencing.
  • Work setting: Electricians and HVAC technicians may work in occupied buildings, mechanical rooms, attics, crawl spaces, or outdoor sites. Carpenters and laborers may move between projects as phases finish.
  • Safety: Fall protection, electrical safety, confined-space procedures, respiratory protection, hearing protection, and proper tool use are practical requirements, not optional add-ons.
  • Transferable skills: Blueprint reading, measurement, documentation, customer communication, digital controls, and fault diagnosis can improve mobility across employers and specialties.

How to choose among the high-demand options

Choose HVAC if you prefer systems and diagnosis

HVAC may suit someone who enjoys combining mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, and controls knowledge. Consider whether you can handle seasonal demand, service calls, and work in uncomfortable spaces. Ask local employers which certifications or equipment experience they actually request.

Choose electrical work if you value code-based precision

Electrical work rewards careful measurement, documentation, code compliance, and methodical troubleshooting. Confirm the apprenticeship and license ladder in your jurisdiction, because the title and permitted work can change by location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose plumbing or pipe trades if repair and installation appeal to you

Plumbing and pipe trades offer exposure to both new construction and ongoing maintenance. If you prefer predictable hours, ask specifically about emergency rotation and weekend coverage before accepting a service position.

Choose carpentry if you want visible building work

Carpentry can offer a broad range of specialties, from framing to finish work. Compare employers by the type of projects they perform; the tools, pace, weather exposure, and advancement path differ sharply between residential, commercial, and industrial carpentry.

Start as a laborer or helper when you need a broad entry point

This route can let you earn while learning job-site basics and observing several trades. Treat it as a deliberate stepping stone: identify the trade you want, find out which formal training is recognized locally, and set a timeline for moving beyond general tasks if advancement is your goal.

A practical way to check demand and pay where you live

  1. Check BLS State & Area Data for the occupation, state, and metropolitan area. Compare local median wages with the national figures above.
  2. Review current job postings from multiple employers. Note requested experience, licenses, shift patterns, travel, overtime language, and whether the position is residential, commercial, industrial, or maintenance-focused.
  3. Confirm licensing rules with the relevant state or local authority. Verify required hours, examinations, renewals, and whether an employer must hold a separate contractor license.
  4. Compare apprenticeship terms in writing: starting wage, scheduled increases, tuition or fees, tool costs, classroom hours, benefits, and how prior experience is credited.
  5. Ask about the full compensation picture, including overtime eligibility, health coverage, retirement contributions, paid travel, per diem, seasonal layoffs, and guaranteed hours.
  6. Test the work before committing where possible through an entry-level job, career center, or supervised job shadow arranged through a legitimate local program.

Bottom line for a career decision

For the fastest projected growth in this comparison, HVAC mechanics and installers lead at 11%. Electricians combine 9% projected growth with a $63,190 national median wage, while plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters show 7% growth and the highest listed median at $63,800. Carpenters offer a large, varied occupation with a $60,580 median and 4% projected growth. Construction laborer and helper roles provide a broad entry route, 6% projected growth, and about 137,000 annual openings, but a lower $46,680 median.
