Christmas tree lights began as an experiment, not a household fixture. In 1882, Edward Johnson, an Edison Company vice president, decorated a tree at his home with electric lights—the earliest Christmas tree known to use them. The White House’s first known tree came later, in 1889, and its first electrically lit family tree is documented more cautiously: the White House Historical Association says evidence suggests it was in 1894.
The first known electric Christmas tree was in 1882
The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History identifies the tree in Edward Johnson’s home as the first Christmas tree known to use electric lights. Johnson was an Edison Company vice president; Smithsonian Magazine locates his home in a New York City townhouse and describes the lights as experimental. That date marks an early use of electric light on a Christmas tree, not the moment Christmas became widely electrified. Electricity was not yet routinely available in homes, and early strings were expensive.

How the White House milestones differ
The White House has its own sequence of events. Its first known Christmas tree, the first use of electricity in the building, and the first electrically lit family tree are separate milestones.

The White House did not necessarily have a tree every year after 1889. The Association notes that first families’ practices, children in the household, and whether a family was in residence affected the custom.
Why electric tree lights took time to spread
Johnson’s display came before routine household electrification. The Smithsonian describes early lights as costly; as more people adopted electric lighting, the prices of lamps and electricity fell. That broader shift helps explain how electric tree lights became more accessible, but it does not mean Christmas lights themselves drove electrification.

- 1900: $12 for a 16-bulb string, with bulbs in brass sockets.
- 1914: $1.75 for a 16-foot string.
Both figures are historical prices reported by Smithsonian Magazine in 2016; they are not modern equivalents. The same account characterizes colored bulbs and cones as widespread by the 1930s, without giving a household adoption rate. Smithsonian Magazine.

From a novelty to a public holiday tradition
The milestones show a gradual change: an experimental electric tree in a private home in 1882, electric lighting at the White House in 1891, and a White House family tree that documentation suggests was lit electrically in 1894. The first National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony followed in 1923, making electric holiday displays a public ceremony decades after Johnson’s early experiment.
