Choose by the job first—structural role, span, loads, moisture exposure, code requirements and finish—then compare equivalent materials and their installed costs in your location. Plywood and oriented strand board (OSB) are structural panels. I-joists, glulam and structural composite lumber perform different framing roles. Reclaimed boards can suit reuse or finish work, but they are not a proven blanket substitute for graded structural material.
The practical method is to define the required performance, obtain like-for-like specifications and price the complete installation, including preparation, waste, labor, delivery and inspection.

Why a higher lumber price does not make every substitute a bargain
“Lumber” covers products with different dimensions, grades and jobs. A 2-by-4 stud, a subfloor panel, a roof rafter and a long-span beam cannot be swapped simply because another wood product has a lower shelf price. A cheaper product can become more expensive after additional blocking, thicker sections, special fasteners, more cutting or a slower installation.

In April 2026, the National Association of Home Builders reported that U.S. softwood lumber prices were up 1.1% year over year, while particleboard and fiberboard prices were down 12% and softwood veneer and plywood prices were down 1.7%. Those are dated national construction-input figures, not a quote for a particular store, region or project.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Mid-Atlantic producer-price table publishes monthly indexes through August 2026, with August marked preliminary. A producer-price index tracks price movement at an industry level; it does not tell you what a contractor will pay for a delivered, code-compliant panel today.
Start with the structural role
Before comparing prices, identify what the material must do. APA guidance separates structural panels from engineered framing products and says the panel choice depends on application, support spacing, span direction, loads, exposure and the panel’s place in the structural system.
| Product category | Typical role | What must be specified | Can it replace a different category? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plywood | Subfloors, wall and roof sheathing, flooring, siding, marine work, concrete forms and furniture | Panel grade, thickness, span rating, bond or exposure classification, dimensions and fastening requirements | Sometimes, when the design and marking allow it; not as a generic replacement for beams or joists |
| OSB | Structural floor, wall and roof panels and other sheathing applications | Rated panel, thickness, span, support spacing, load, exposure and installation details | Sometimes, when the engineered panel is approved for the same application |
| I-joists | Engineered floor and roof framing for controlled spans and loads | Manufacturer series, depth, span tables, bearing, web holes, blocking and connections | No; an I-joist is not a sheet-panel substitute |
| Glulam | Beams, girders, columns and other substantial structural members | Species, layup, strength grade, dimensions, connection design and exposure | No; it serves a beam or column role |
| Structural composite lumber | Beams, headers, posts, rim members and concentrated-load framing | Product type, grade, section, span, load, bearing and connections | No; LVL, PSL, LSL and OSL are not generic boards |
| Reclaimed boards | Finish work, trim, furniture and project-specific reuse | Verified species, grade, condition, dimensions, treatment history and code acceptance | Not established as a general structural substitute |
Plywood: a strong panel option when the specification fits
Plywood consists of thin wood veneers cross-laminated and bonded under heat and pressure. APA lists uses including subflooring, wall and roof sheathing, flooring, siding, marine construction, concrete formwork, furniture and industrial applications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRead the panel marking, not just the word “plywood”
Performance-rated panels carry markings that identify relevant product and use information. Check the grade, thickness, span rating, dimensions and installation instructions. Bond classification indicates exposure suitability; it does not by itself mean the panel is decay-resistant. A panel intended for intermittent moisture is not automatically suitable for prolonged wetting, ground contact or an unprotected exterior assembly.

Where plywood can make economic sense
- When the required thickness and span rating are readily stocked locally.
- When the job benefits from predictable face quality, screw-holding or a finish surface.
- When a panel must tolerate the project’s exposure classification and the design already calls for plywood.
- When its installed cost is lower after accounting for cutting, waste, labor and delivery—not merely because its unit price looks lower.
Do not select a thinner or unrated sheet to reduce the invoice. If the structural design calls for a rated subfloor or shear wall panel, the replacement must meet the same design requirement or be approved by the responsible designer.
OSB and other engineered wood: efficient, but not interchangeable
OSB panels
OSB and plywood are both engineered structural panels used in floors, walls and roofs. Their suitability depends on the same variables: load, support spacing, span direction, exposure and the complete structural system. A panel that is acceptable for roof sheathing may not meet a floor’s stiffness or moisture requirements.
Compare the exact thickness, span rating, edge support, fastening schedule and exposure marking. Account for job-site handling and weather protection as well. The least expensive sheet on a per-panel basis may require more careful storage or replacement if it is damaged before installation.
I-joists
I-joists are manufactured framing members with engineered flanges and a web. They are selected from manufacturer span tables for a particular depth, series, bearing condition and load. Web holes, blocking, rim details and connections follow the manufacturer’s instructions. An I-joist can reduce the number of intermediate supports in a designed floor, but it cannot be priced as a direct alternative to a sheet of plywood or a dimensional stud.

Glulam and structural composite lumber
Glulam is laminated structural timber used for beams, girders and columns. Structural composite lumber includes laminated veneer lumber (LVL), parallel strand lumber (PSL), laminated strand lumber (LSL) and oriented strand lumber (OSL). These products are selected by strength grade, section size, span, bearing and connection design. APA’s engineered-wood guidance treats them as separate product types rather than generic replacements for sheet panels or ordinary boards.
They may solve a specific long-span or concentrated-load problem with fewer pieces, but material cost is only one part of the decision. Delivery equipment, lifting, temporary support and connection hardware can change the installed total.
Reclaimed boards: useful reuse, uncertain structural substitution
Reclaimed boards can be attractive for flooring, wall finishes, trim, furniture and other visible work. Their environmental and character benefits may matter more than a nominally low purchase price.
For structural use, however, the critical questions are often unanswered: What species and grade are they? Have they been exposed to moisture, insects, fire, chemicals or paint? Were they cut, drilled or planed? Are dimensions consistent? Can a qualified inspector or engineer document their capacity, and will the local building official accept that documentation?

No general rule establishes reclaimed stock as a structural substitute. Treat it as a project-specific reuse or finish option unless condition, grade, suitability and code acceptance are verified.
Why reclaimed material is not automatically cheaper
- De-nailing and metal detection add labor and tool wear.
- Sorting and grading can produce substantial unusable waste.
- Planing, ripping, trimming and kiln treatment may be required.
- Irregular sizes can increase layout time and create extra joints.
- Transport may cost more when inventory is scattered or sold in small lots.
Because these costs vary by source and project, a blanket claim that reclaimed boards save money is not supportable.

The Forest Service reported that during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, processed wood products including softwood lumber and plywood nearly quadrupled in price. Wholesale plywood rose from about $400 to $1,500 per thousand square feet, roughly $12.80 to $48 per retail sheet. Those figures describe a historical shock in 2020–2021 conditions, not today’s retail level.
Jeffrey Prestemon, a Forest Service senior research forester, summarized the mechanism: “This is basic economics: when the supply curve shifts backwards and demand increases, prices will go up.” The same principle explains why a national index can move differently from a local quote affected by inventory, freight, taxes, mill supply and seasonal demand.

How to compare the three options on a real project
- Define the job. Write down whether the material is a floor, wall, roof, beam, post, finish surface or temporary form. Record spans, support spacing, design loads and connection requirements.
- Set exposure conditions. Identify interior, covered exterior, intermittent wetting, permanent exterior exposure or ground contact. Confirm the required bond or exposure classification.
- Obtain an equivalent specification. For each candidate, record grade, thickness or section, span rating, dimensions, manufacturer instructions and code listing. Reject a price comparison that changes the required performance.
- Price delivered materials. Request local quotes that state quantity, freight, taxes, lead time and whether the price is recurring, promotional or a one-time allowance.
- Add installation costs. Include cutting, layout, fasteners, blocking, lifting, inspection, protection from weather, finishing and expected waste.
- Check availability and approval. Confirm that the product is stocked when needed and accepted by the project’s designer and local building official.
- Compare the installed result. Choose the option that meets the design at the lowest reliable total cost—not the lowest sticker price.
Project-by-project decision guide
Floor and roof sheathing
Begin with the specified panel rating, thickness, support spacing and span direction. Compare rated plywood and OSB only when both are approved for the same assembly. Include edge blocking, fastening, panel protection and any stiffness or appearance requirement.
Wall sheathing
Determine whether the panel contributes to shear resistance, weather protection, insulation support or only a backing surface. A lower-priced sheet that lacks the required structural or exposure marking is not an equivalent substitution.
Long-span beams and headers
Ask whether an engineered member such as LVL, PSL, LSL, OSL or glulam is specified. Compare section size, bearing, connections, delivery and lifting. Do not replace a designed beam with reclaimed boards or a stack of ordinary lumber without a new design.
Visible finishes and furniture
Reclaimed boards may be appropriate when appearance and reuse are the priorities. Budget for cleaning, metal removal, milling, acclimation, defects and finish testing. Structural claims require separate verification.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Comparing a sheet price with a board price: Convert each option to the same covered area or structural capacity, then add labor and waste.
- Assuming “exterior” means decay-proof: Read the complete marking; bond classification alone does not establish decay resistance.
- Replacing a structural product by category name: A panel, I-joist, glulam and SCL member have different design functions. Obtain approval for any change.
- Using a national index as a local quote: Ask suppliers for current delivered pricing in the project’s location.
- Ignoring moisture during storage: Protect panels and engineered members from weather and follow manufacturer handling instructions.
- Accepting reclaimed stock without documentation: Require evidence of grade, condition, treatment history and code acceptance before structural use.
- Forgetting schedule risk: A nominally cheap product that arrives late can add equipment rental, labor and temporary protection costs.
A specification checklist before ordering
- Project location and governing building code
- Structural role and design loads
- Span, support spacing and bearing conditions
- Panel thickness or member dimensions
- Grade, span rating and exposure classification
- Fasteners, connections, blocking and edge support
- Quantity, cutting plan and expected waste
- Delivery date, freight and storage protection
- Designer, inspector or building-official approval for substitutions
When lumber prices rise, the dependable saving is usually a better-defined specification and a complete installed-cost comparison. Plywood or OSB may be the right panel, engineered framing may solve a beam or span problem, and reclaimed boards may add value to a finish. None becomes the correct choice until its performance and approval match the work.
