Recover a fertilizer spill promptly, keep granules and rinse water out of gutters and storm drains, and follow the product label before deciding whether material can be reused or must be discarded. Dry granules on concrete or pavement are usually swept up; fertilizer on turf, liquid products, and fertilizer that contains a pesticide require more product-specific decisions.
Do not hose fertilizer from a garage floor, driveway, sidewalk, or gutter. Runoff from impervious surfaces can reach storm drains and receiving waters. If the label is missing, the product is contaminated or unusable, or disposal instructions are unclear, contact your local waste-management agency rather than pouring the product into a drain or toilet.

First response: stop the spill from moving
Pause work and identify exactly what was released. Keep children, pets and anyone without the label-required protective equipment away from the area. If a bag or container is still leaking, place it upright only when you can do so without spreading the product, then keep the original label with it. The label controls handling, permitted uses, protective equipment and disposal.

Before sweeping or collecting, look for floor drains, driveway gutters, curb inlets, ditches and nearby surface water. Prevent loose fertilizer from being tracked or blown toward those routes. A storm drain is not a treatment system: fertilizer left on pavement can be transported to water bodies, which is why university extension guidance emphasizes prompt recovery.

Classify the incident before choosing a follow-up action:
| Spill situation | Immediate recovery | Follow-up decision |
|---|---|---|
| Dry granules on a garage floor, driveway or sidewalk | Sweep promptly with a stiff broom and dustpan; collect the material | Return uncontaminated product to its bag only if the label permits; otherwise use it only as directed or obtain local disposal instructions |
| Dry granules on lawn or garden soil | Remove as much as practical without spreading it | Check the exact label and local extension advice before any watering; the reviewed turf guidance is not uniform |
| Liquid fertilizer | Stop movement toward drains and recover as much as possible | Use the product label for containment, protective equipment and disposal; no single household absorbent method fits every formulation |
| Fertilizer containing a pesticide | Keep the product contained and identify the pesticide label and active ingredients | Use pesticide-specific label and local waste instructions rather than ordinary fertilizer reuse advice |
The table separates the situations that are often incorrectly treated as one cleanup problem. Formulation, quantity, slope, drainage and proximity to water can change the appropriate response.
Dry fertilizer on a garage floor, driveway or sidewalk
1. Sweep before weather or traffic spreads it
Use a stiff-bristle broom and dustpan to gather granules into a clean pile. Work from the outside edge toward the center so you do not push product into cracks, gutters or a drain. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions summarizes the basic action as: “If you spill fertilizer, sweep it up and put it back in the bag right away.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat advice applies only when the recovered product is dry, uncontaminated and still suitable for its labeled use. Inspect the pile for soil, oil, vehicle fluids, cleaning chemicals, leaves or other material. Do not combine questionable material with a clean bag of fertilizer.
2. Decide whether the material can be reused
Read the label before putting anything back in the original container. If it permits reuse and the granules remain uncontaminated, return them to the bag and close it securely. Keep the label legible so the product can be identified later.

If the label does not permit return, apply the recovered fertilizer only to the intended plants and only at the labeled rate. Do not spread an unknown extra dose simply to make the pile disappear. If you cannot use it correctly, keep it contained while you obtain disposal directions from the local waste-management agency.
3. Leave pavement clean without washing fertilizer away
Do not hose the driveway, sweepings or garage floor into a gutter or drain. UF/IFAS Extension explains that fertilizer remaining on impervious areas can be carried into storm drains and water bodies. Its Orange County best-management guidance recommends sweeping or blowing fertilizer from impervious areas back into a vegetated area, but that destination must be appropriate for the product and its label. A vegetated area is not a license to overapply fertilizer or place it beside a pond, ditch or stream.

Fertilizer spilled on a lawn or in a garden
Remove the excess first
Granules concentrated in one spot can injure turf and plants. Carefully scoop or hand-pick as much as practical, placing the recovered material in a labeled container or back in its original bag when the label allows. Avoid dragging a shovel through the spill and spreading a concentrated band across a wider area.
Do not assume that watering is automatically the right next step. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions advises against rinsing a fertilizer spill away because the water can reach a storm drain. Purdue Extension’s 2022 turf-specific guidance, by contrast, says to remove as much fertilizer as possible and then flush a turf spill with water. Those instructions address different contexts, so the product label and local extension service should decide what happens after recovery.

Use site conditions to choose the next action
Tell the adviser or waste official how much was spilled, whether it was granular or coated, the plant or turf type, the slope, the drainage pattern and the distance to surface water. A small spill on level soil with no drain nearby is a different risk from a large pile on a sloping lawn beside a curb inlet.
If the label gives a specific spill or irrigation instruction, follow it exactly. If it does not, pause before adding water or additional fertilizer. Watch for plant or turf injury and record the product name, analysis and amount involved; that information helps an extension professional give a defensible recommendation.
Liquid fertilizer spills
Contain and recover what you can
Liquid fertilizer moves quickly across concrete, soil and sloped ground, making it harder to clean up than dry granules. Texas A&M AgriLife’s handling guidance recommends recovering as much as possible and stresses that liquid spills are more difficult to manage.
Keep the liquid from moving toward drains and surface water while you consult the label. Use only containment or protective equipment that the label specifies. The reviewed extension sources do not establish one universal absorbent, neutralizer or household cleanup recipe for every liquid fertilizer formulation, so do not improvise a chemical treatment.
Do not mix in household chemicals
Do not reach for bleach, ammonia or another homemade neutralizer. Advice about absorbents and bleach that appears in pesticide-spill material should not be transferred to fertilizer products generally. Mixing chemicals can create a second hazard and may violate label directions.

Keep recovered liquid and contaminated material in a secure, labeled container while obtaining disposal instructions. If the product has entered soil, a drain or surface water, report the product name and approximate quantity to the appropriate local authority and follow its instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the fertilizer also contains a pesticide
Some combination products supply nutrients and a pesticide in the same package. Treat the pesticide ingredient as decisive for cleanup and disposal. Do not use ordinary fertilizer advice to justify returning a questionable mixture to a fertilizer bag or applying it to plants.
Read the pesticide product label for spill, protective-equipment and disposal directions. Keep the container and label available for local waste officials. If the label is damaged or unreadable, do not guess the ingredients; contact the manufacturer through the contact information on any remaining packaging or ask the local waste-management agency how to identify and manage it.
Never pour a pesticide-containing fertilizer into a sink, floor drain, toilet or outdoor gutter. Local collection programs and restrictions vary, so obtain current instructions for your jurisdiction.
Disposal when the product is unusable or unidentified
Keep usable material in the labeled product stream
A dry, uncontaminated product may be returned to its bag only when the label permits. Otherwise, use it for the intended plants at the labeled rate. Do not place loose fertilizer in an unmarked container where someone could mistake it for another material.

Ask locally before discarding chemicals
For fertilizer that is contaminated, past its usable condition, leaking, mixed with another chemical or missing a readable label, contact the local waste-management agency. Explain whether it is granular or liquid, provide the product name and label details if available, and ask about household hazardous-waste collection or another approved route. Disposal requirements are set locally and can change.
Do not put unused fertilizer or cleanup liquid down a drain or toilet. Keep the material secured while waiting for instructions, and do not transfer it to a food, drink or household-cleaner container.
Why keeping fertilizer out of drains matters
Driveways, sidewalks and garage floors are impervious surfaces. Water that runs across them can carry dissolved fertilizer or loose particles into a storm-drain system and then to receiving waters. UF/IFAS’s guidance on nitrogen in the home landscape explains the storm-drain pathway, while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises responsible application, storage and disposal and avoiding conditions that create nutrient runoff.
Recommended Free Tools
This is also why a “quick rinse” can create a larger problem than the original pile. The visible fertilizer may disappear from the pavement while the nutrient load is simply moved into a place where it is harder to recover. Collecting the material while it is still concentrated gives you the best chance to reuse it lawfully or dispose of it through the correct channel.
Preventing another spill
- Store bags and containers upright, sealed and protected from vehicle traffic, rain and floor drains.
- Keep the label with the product and avoid transferring fertilizer to an unlabeled container.
- Use a stable scoop and close the bag before moving it across a driveway or garage.
- Plan applications around the label and weather; the EPA’s yard guidance recommends avoiding conditions that promote runoff.
- Measure applications rather than estimating, and keep fertilizer away from gutters, drains and surface water.
- Clean tools over a location where residue can be collected, not over a drain or paved area that leads to one.
For a dry spill, the practical rule is recovery by sweeping and correct reuse or disposal. For turf, liquid fertilizer and combination pesticide products, the correct next step depends on the label and site conditions; when those are unclear, local waste and extension authorities are the safest source of a product-specific answer.
