alternative cement

What to Ask a Contractor Before Using Alternative Cement in a Renovation

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before approving an “alternative cement,” ask your contractor to identify the exact binder and mix, prove that it suits the renovation element and exposure, show how it will be approved and tested, and explain how curing and scheduling will work. The term covers materially different systems, so a lower-carbon label alone is not enough to decide whether the concrete is suitable.

Start by defining exactly what “alternative cement” means

Do not treat alternative cement, blended hydraulic cement, and supplementary cementitious material (SCM) as interchangeable terms. They describe different arrangements of cementitious ingredients and may be governed by different specifications.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

ACI’s terminology distinguishes an alternative cement as a cement that can replace portland or blended hydraulic cement completely but is not covered by the relevant conventional cement specifications. Some alternative cements are also used in blends. A conventional cement mixed with an SCM is therefore not automatically the same thing as a standalone alternative cement.

Ask the contractor to put the proposed system in writing before discussing price or schedule. The written description should identify:

  • Manufacturer and exact commercial product name.
  • Binder or cement type and each constituent material.
  • Whether the proposal is a conventional cement with SCMs, a blended hydraulic cement, or an alternative cement outside the usual cement specifications.
  • Proposed cementitious content, water-to-cementitious-materials ratio, admixtures, and aggregate source.
  • The renovation element where it will be used, such as a footing, slab, wall, beam, column, topping, repair, or nonstructural patch.

A contractor who can discuss only “green concrete” or “low-carbon cement” has not yet given you enough information to evaluate the proposal.

Ask what the material must do in this particular renovation

The right question is not “Is this cement as strong as regular cement?” It is “What performance is required for this element, in this exposure, on this schedule, and under the governing specification?” A mix may be appropriate for a nonstructural interior floor and inappropriate for a freeze-thaw-exposed retaining wall, even at the same nominal strength.

Have the contractor list the performance requirements for the actual work. Depending on the project, these can include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Specified compressive strength and the age at which it must be achieved.
  • Early strength needed for stripping forms, loading, installing flooring or tile, or allowing the next trade to work.
  • Durability against freeze-thaw cycles, moisture, deicing salts, sulfates, chlorides, soil chemistry, groundwater, or other chemicals.
  • Permeability, shrinkage, cracking control, abrasion resistance, heat development, or fire performance.
  • Finish, flatness, color, surface hardness, and compatibility with coatings or flooring adhesives.
  • Dimensional and load requirements for structural elements.

Ask the contractor to identify which requirements come from the drawings, project specification, building code, engineer’s notes, manufacturer’s data, or the owner’s performance criteria. If no one can state the requirements, there is no reliable basis for approving a substitute material.

Confirm whether code or design approval is required

Ask, “Is this work structural or otherwise regulated, and which edition of the building code and local amendments govern it?” The answer depends on your jurisdiction, the code adopted there, and the scope of the renovation. A statement about an ACI provision is not automatically the law in every location.

An excerpt from ACI 318-25 states: “Alternative cements shall be permitted if approved by the licensed design professional and the building official.” The same excerpt ties approval to test data documenting that the proposed concrete meets application-specific structural, fire, and durability requirements. Treat that as a framework to verify with your designer and building department, not as a substitute for checking local adoption.

Ask these approval questions:

  1. Which code edition and local amendments apply to this permit?
  2. Does the element fall within the structural-concrete provisions, or is it nonstructural work?
  3. Will the licensed design professional of record review and approve the proposed cement or mix?
  4. Does the building official require a formal alternate-material request, special inspection, or additional submittal?
  5. Who will submit the test reports, evaluation documents, and revised mix information?
  6. What happens if the inspector rejects the material after delivery?

Get approvals in writing before placement. A verbal assurance that “the inspector has seen this before” does not establish acceptance for your project.

Demand evidence for the exact product and mix

General information about a cement family cannot prove that the proposed job mix will perform. Ask for product-specific and mix-specific documentation, and check that the documents identify the same manufacturer, constituents, proportions, and intended application described in the proposal.

Documents to request

  • Technical data sheet and safety information for every cementitious constituent.
  • Complete mix design, including cementitious materials, water, aggregates, admixtures, and target water-to-cementitious-materials ratio.
  • Independent laboratory test reports for strength, durability, and any project-specific performance criteria.
  • Evaluation reports, published standards, or engineering assessments explaining how the material is accepted for the proposed use.
  • Records from comparable projects, with enough detail to show that the exposure, element, climate, and construction method are similar.
  • Batching, quality-control, and traceability procedures for the local supplier.

Ask the contractor to explain what each test demonstrates and what it does not demonstrate. A compressive-strength result does not by itself establish freeze-thaw resistance, low permeability, fire performance, shrinkage control, or compatibility with a coating. A laboratory result on a different mix or a different source of aggregate is supporting context, not proof of your mix.

Use an acceptance plan, not a promise

Ask which tests are acceptance tests, who performs them, where specimens are made and cured, and what happens if a result misses the requirement. The plan should state the sampling frequency, test method, specimen age, reporting time, and decision authority. For structural work, coordinate this with the engineer and any special inspector; do not select a consumer testing device as a substitute for specified acceptance testing.

Match strength timing to the construction schedule

Alternative binders and SCMs can gain strength at a different rate from a conventional portland-cement mix. Some SCM-containing concretes develop strength more slowly at 28 days but continue gaining later. The important question is when your project needs the concrete to perform, not whether one number sounds familiar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the contractor to provide a schedule that connects each construction step to a required strength and a measurement date:

Construction decision Question to ask Evidence to identify
Form or shoring removal What strength is required before removal, and who authorizes it? Specified early-age strength, test age, and engineer’s release procedure.
Loading or equipment installation What load can the element carry at that date? Strength or maturity criterion tied to the planned load.
Flooring, tile, or coating What moisture, strength, flatness, and surface condition must be met? Moisture and surface tests, manufacturer limits, and waiting period.
Next trade or occupancy Which result allows work to proceed? Named test, acceptance threshold, responsible person, and record.
Final acceptance At what age is the specified strength evaluated? 28-, 56-, or 90-day criterion stated in the specification.

Twenty-eight-day compressive strength is standard practice, but specifications sometimes use 56- or 90-day strengths when slower-reacting SCMs are present. Do not assume that a 90-day acceptance age permits work to proceed at 28 days; the contractor still has to show what supports each earlier step.

Ask when cylinders, cubes, or other specimens will be made and tested, and whether in-place measurements will supplement laboratory results. If the schedule depends on early strength, require a contingency for delayed results, cold weather, or a failed test rather than relying on an optimistic pour date.

Get a curing and temperature-control plan

Curing conditions can materially change strength development and durability. Ask for the method, duration, and temperature range the contractor will maintain for the actual mix and weather conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions about curing

  • How will moisture be retained: water curing, curing compound, wet coverings, membrane, enclosure, or another method?
  • For how many days will curing continue, and what event ends the curing period?
  • How will the crew protect the concrete from freezing, rapid drying, wind, sun, and excessive heat?
  • What temperature range is expected during the first days, and how will it be measured?
  • Will maturity or temperature-matched curing be used to estimate in-place strength?
  • Who records curing temperatures and what record is provided to the owner or designer?

The Portland Cement Association identifies maturity or temperature-matched curing and in-place testing as possible ways to assess strength development. These methods are useful only when the maturity relationship or test procedure is established for the specific mix and approved by the responsible professional. A temperature sensor reading without a validated relationship is not automatically an acceptance result.

Ask what the contractor will do if temperatures fall outside the planned range. Possible responses include extending curing, delaying loading, changing protection, or obtaining additional testing. The response should be agreed before the pour.

Ask how workability and admixture compatibility will be controlled

Do not accept “we can add water on site” as the workability plan. Uncontrolled water changes the water-to-cementitious-materials ratio and can reduce strength, durability, and finish quality.

Ask:

  • What slump or flow range is specified at discharge and at placement?
  • Which water-reducing, set-controlling, air-entraining, or other admixtures are planned?
  • Has compatibility been confirmed between those admixtures and this cementitious system?
  • How will hot, cold, or changing temperatures affect setting and workability?
  • Who may authorize an adjustment, and how will the adjustment be recorded?
  • What is the maximum permitted water addition, if any?

ACI guidance notes that ingredient and temperature differences can alter admixture response. A mix that worked at a supplier’s trial temperature may set too quickly, remain fluid too long, entrain the wrong amount of air, or finish unpredictably under site conditions. Ask for trial-batch information using the local materials and expected temperature range, not merely a brochure value.

For slabs and finished surfaces, ask how the crew will avoid premature finishing, surface sealing, bleeding-related defects, and curing gaps. The finishing sequence should account for the actual setting behavior of the proposed mix.

Test durability against the site’s exposure

Tell the contractor every exposure that could affect the element. Relevant conditions may include exterior wetting and drying, freeze-thaw cycles, deicing salts, marine or chloride exposure, sulfate-bearing soil, contaminated groundwater, industrial chemicals, persistent dampness, and abrasion.

Then ask which data address each condition. A useful answer names a test, a performance criterion, and the source of the requirement. “It is durable” is not documentation.

Exposure questions

  • What soil and groundwater chemistry was assumed in the mix selection?
  • Is air entrainment required for the expected freeze-thaw exposure?
  • What evidence addresses chloride ingress, sulfate resistance, chemical attack, or permeability where relevant?
  • Will the element be protected by a membrane, coating, drainage layer, or other detail, and is that protection included in the design?
  • How will cracking, shrinkage, and joints be controlled for this geometry and restraint?
  • Does the proposed material have limitations for fire rating or elevated-temperature performance?

Make the contractor connect each answer to the actual element. A data sheet for an interior slab does not establish suitability for a foundation wall exposed to wet soil and salts.

Interrogate the carbon claim on a like-for-like basis

“Low carbon” is a description of an accounting comparison, not a performance specification. Ask what is being compared, for which quantity of concrete, over what life cycle, and with what assumptions.

Mike Ireland, president and chief executive officer of the Portland Cement Association, said on December 2, 2024, reporting the association’s November 18 announcement: “The definition of ‘low carbon’ is becoming increasingly subjective, with little attention paid to either upstream and downstream impacts or short-term and long-term strength, durability, and resiliency concerns.” Use that caution when reviewing marketing language.

Questions for the environmental documentation

  • Is there an environmental product declaration (EPD) for the exact product or mix, rather than a generic cement category?
  • What functional unit and service-life period does the comparison use?
  • Does the comparison include transport, constituent production, batching, curing energy, maintenance, and replacement?
  • Are the compared concretes equivalent in strength, durability, exposure class, and expected service life?
  • Are the figures independently verified, and what date and geographic supply assumptions apply?
  • Does the claimed reduction depend on a one-time supplier condition or a regularly available local product?

The American Cement Association describes portland-limestone cement as containing approximately 5% to 15% limestone and says its greenhouse-gas emissions are about 10% lower than portland cement. Those are association-level descriptions of that cement type, not a project-specific lifecycle calculation and not a claim about every alternative cement. Ask the contractor to provide the basis for the number used in your proposal.

Do not rank options by a “green” label alone. The lower-impact option that cannot meet the schedule, exposure, or service-life requirement may create more material use, repair, or replacement later.

Verify local supply and protect the schedule

A technically suitable material is not useful if the local supplier cannot batch it on your dates. Ask whether the exact constituents and admixtures are currently available from the proposed plant and whether the mix was evaluated with that supply.

  • Hard hat clip- attaches for easy access
  • Quick dry time with reduced smearing and marking

Confirm:

  • Supplier, plant location, delivery radius, and normal lead time.
  • Availability for every planned placement, including any separate pours.
  • Whether the supplier has produced this exact mix or only a similar formulation.
  • How aggregate moisture, cement source, SCM source, and admixture inventory are controlled.
  • What notice the supplier needs for a weather-sensitive or high-volume placement.
  • How a changed constituent, plant, or delivery date triggers re-evaluation.

Require a written contingency. It should state whether the fallback is another approved mix, a conventional specified cement, a delayed placement, or a redesign, and who pays for added testing, engineering, protection, storage, or schedule impacts. A substitute should not arrive at the truck without prior approval.

Put responsibility, warranty, and failed tests in the contract

Ask the contractor to identify who is responsible for design, procurement, batching, placement, curing, testing, and approval. The contract should not leave a gap between the contractor’s material proposal and the designer’s acceptance.

Clarify in writing:

  • Which party prepares and submits the mix design and alternative-material request.
  • Who pays for laboratory testing, special inspection, maturity monitoring, additional cylinders, and retesting.
  • Who decides whether a failed result requires investigation, repair, strengthening, removal, or replacement.
  • How delays caused by slow strength gain or failed tests affect the schedule and costs.
  • What the contractor’s warranty covers for cracking, strength, durability, finish, and moisture-related defects.
  • Which exclusions apply, including owner-caused damage, altered drainage, unauthorized water addition, or later penetrations.
  • Who retains test reports, batch tickets, curing logs, and approval records.

Ask directly, “What is excluded from your warranty, and who is responsible if testing misses the specified performance?” An answer that shifts every risk to the owner is a reason to pause and obtain independent professional advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare named systems with a decision table

If the contractor presents two or more options, require a side-by-side comparison using the same project requirements. Do not compare one option’s generic marketing claim with another option’s project-specific test data.

Comparison axis Questions for each named system
Application and code acceptance What element is it for, which specification covers it, and who approves it?
Early and later strength What strength is available for each construction step, and at what test age?
Exposure durability What data address the site’s moisture, freeze-thaw, salts, soil, or chemicals?
Curing and finishing What curing duration, temperature control, workability range, and finishing sequence are required?
Supply and schedule Can the local plant produce the exact mix on the planned dates, and what is the fallback?
Environmental documentation Is an EPD or equivalent document available for the product or mix, with its comparison basis stated?

Choose only after the designer or engineer confirms that each candidate satisfies the governing requirements. A lower initial price or lower stated emissions does not compensate for an unapproved mix, an unworkable curing plan, or a schedule that cannot be met.

Use this contractor-meeting checklist

Take the following questions to the proposal meeting and ask for written answers attached to the submittal:

  1. What is the exact manufacturer, product, binder type, constituent system, and proposed mix?
  2. Is it a blended cement, conventional cement with SCMs, or an alternative cement outside the usual specifications?
  3. Which renovation element will use it, and is that element structural or code-regulated?
  4. What code edition, local amendments, drawings, and specifications govern the work?
  5. Who is the licensed design professional responsible for approval, and does the building official need to approve the alternative?
  6. What tests and project references demonstrate performance of this exact mix?
  7. What strength is required before form removal, loading, flooring, tile, or the next trade?
  8. At what ages will specimens or in-place measurements be taken, and what acceptance age controls?
  9. What curing method, duration, temperature range, and monitoring records will be used?
  10. How will workability be maintained without uncontrolled water, and which admixtures have been checked for compatibility?
  11. Which site exposures were considered, and what documentation addresses each one?
  12. Can the local supplier provide the exact mix for the planned dates, and what is the approved contingency?
  13. What does the carbon comparison measure, and can you provide a product- or mix-specific EPD?
  14. Who pays for testing, delays, investigation, repairs, or replacement if the specified performance is not achieved?
  15. What exactly does the warranty cover and exclude?

Recognize answers that should stop the approval

Pause the decision if the contractor:

  • Cannot name the product, constituents, or proposed proportions.
  • Uses “low carbon” as the only evidence of suitability.
  • Says a 28-day result automatically permits earlier loading or finishing.
  • Plans to add water at the site without a documented limit and approval process.
  • Has no curing or cold-weather plan for the actual forecast and mix.
  • Cannot identify the governing code, approving professional, or building-official process.
  • Relies on tests from another mix, another supplier, or an unrelated exposure.
  • Has no supply confirmation or fallback if a constituent becomes unavailable.
  • Will not state responsibility for failed tests, delay, repair, or warranty claims.

These are not arguments against every alternative cement. They indicate that the proposed material has not yet been connected to the requirements of your renovation. Ask for a revised submittal and, for structural or unusual work, obtain an independent review from the licensed design professional before authorizing placement.

Make the approval decision on evidence, not terminology

Approve an alternative cement only when the exact material is identified, the application and exposure are defined, required code approvals are obtained, test data support the specified performance, and curing, testing, supply, schedule, and warranty responsibilities are documented. The most useful contractor is not the one who offers the broadest environmental claim; it is the one who can show how this mix will perform in this element, under these conditions, on the dates your renovation requires.
