What the 2019 AEC Listing Actually Tells You About “Designing for Enhanced Productivity”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Designing for Enhanced Productivity: Promoting Convenience + Control” was listed as a 15-minute presentation by Herbert Els, RCDD, CCNA, then senior vice president of Building Technology Systems at WSP USA, for Building Design + Construction’s 2019 Accelerate AEC Innovation Conference. The public announcement confirms the session title, speaker, event and format—but it does not preserve the talk’s argument, examples, recommendations or results. Treat the listing as an event record, not as a technical guide to a particular control system or productivity method.

What is confirmed about the presentation

Building Design + Construction published its conference announcement on April 10, 2019. The announcement placed Els’s session in the lineup for the third annual Accelerate AEC Innovation Conference, scheduled for May 13–14 at Dream Downtown in New York City.

What the listing does not establish

No abstract, transcript, slide deck, recording or project case study is included in the available announcement. There is therefore no reliable basis for saying that Els advocated a specific building-automation platform, sensor package, user-interface design, networking architecture, commissioning method or workforce program.

The title alone cannot establish an outcome measure. It does not tell us whether “productivity” meant faster design coordination, shorter construction schedules, fewer service calls, better occupant workflow, lower operating effort, improved maintenance, or another result. It also does not identify whose convenience or whose control was under discussion: occupants, facilities teams, contractors, owners, designers, visitors or a combination of users.

Question a reader may have What the announcement establishes
What system or product was demonstrated? Not stated.
What building or project supplied the evidence? Not stated.
What productivity improvement was measured? Not stated.
Was a recommendation made? Not stated.
Is a recording or slide deck available? Not stated.
Which building type or geographic market was addressed? Not stated beyond the New York City event location.

Those omissions matter. A conference listing is promotional and logistical copy; it is not a substitute for the presentation itself. Any account that attributes a particular claim to Els needs the talk, a contemporaneous transcript, or another attributable source.

How to read “convenience + control” without overclaiming

The wording presents a design tension rather than a defined specification. “Convenience” could refer to reducing the number of steps needed to perform a task. “Control” could refer to authority over settings, data, access, schedules or automated actions. The plus sign signals that the title pairs the two ideas; it does not explain how the presenter balanced them.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

For a construction or facilities team evaluating a similar proposal, that pairing is a useful set of questions—not proof of what the 2019 session concluded:

  • Convenience for whom? Name the user and the task. A control that is simple for an occupant may create extra work for a technician, while a highly configurable system may serve an operator but burden occasional users.
  • Control over what? Separate physical control, software permissions, schedules, overrides, data access and emergency authority. They are different design decisions.
  • What does productivity mean? Define the observable result before selecting technology. Possible measures include task time, handoffs, rework, interruptions, comfort complaints, maintenance effort or energy-management actions.
  • What is the fallback? A convenient automated path still needs a manual, local or safe mode when communications, power, credentials or sensors fail.

These questions help an owner or project team interrogate a proposal while avoiding the mistake of treating the conference title as a specification.

The event format limits what could have been covered

The announcement gave each speaker 15 minutes and up to 10 slides. It characterized the sessions as opportunities to present a “radical idea, novel solution, breakthrough project, or emerging technology” related to the future of the AEC industry and the changing built environment.

A format this short can introduce a concept, show a few diagrams or summarize a project, but the listing gives no indication of how Els used the time. It would be inappropriate to infer that the session contained a full design standard, a quantified return-on-investment analysis or implementation instructions. Those require evidence beyond the schedule description.

Why the presenter’s role is relevant—but not proof of the talk’s content

Els was identified as a senior vice president responsible for Building Technology Systems at WSP USA and listed with the credentials RCDD and CCNA. That background places him in a professional area connected with building technology and networked systems. It does not, by itself, establish which technologies, projects or methods he discussed, nor does it convert the session title into an endorsement of any product or architecture.

When citing the session, keep the attribution narrow: identify Els as the named presenter and preserve the role exactly as the announcement gave it. Do not turn a job title into evidence that a particular control strategy was tested or validated.

A due-diligence framework for applying the title’s ideas to a project

If a project team is using the title as a prompt for its own planning, the following sequence keeps convenience and control tied to measurable decisions. This is a general project framework, not a reconstruction of Els’s presentation.

  1. Define the work outcome. Write the task in operational terms: for example, changing a room condition, locating an asset, approving a work order or handing a space from one user to another. Record the current steps and the people involved.
  2. Set a baseline. Capture current task duration, number of handoffs, common errors, override frequency and time spent on support. If a metric cannot be collected, state that limitation rather than promising an improvement.
  3. Map authority. List who can view, change, schedule, override and audit each function. Include temporary staff, contractors, emergency personnel and users with accessibility needs.
  4. Design the normal path. Make the most common action easy to discover and recover from. Do not hide important status information merely to reduce the number of visible controls.
  5. Design exceptions and failure modes. Specify what happens when a sensor gives an implausible value, a network connection drops, a credential expires or an automation conflicts with a safety procedure.
  6. Plan integration and handover. Identify interfaces, naming conventions, points lists, credentials, documentation and training that the operations team will receive at turnover. Convenience that depends on undocumented knowledge is fragile.
  7. Test with representative users. Include the people who will operate, maintain and occasionally encounter the system. Record task completion, confusion points and recovery actions instead of relying on a general impression that the interface feels easier.
  8. Set review dates. Decide who will inspect the metrics after occupancy or commissioning, how changes are approved and when permissions are removed. Control is an operating responsibility, not only an installation feature.

Questions to ask before relying on a claimed productivity benefit

  • Which user, task and building condition does the benefit concern?
  • What was the baseline, and how was the result measured?
  • Was the result observed in one project, a controlled test or a broader sample?
  • What training, staffing, connectivity and maintenance assumptions are required?
  • What happens during a power, network, sensor or identity-system failure?
  • Who owns configuration changes and audit records after handover?
  • How are privacy, cybersecurity, accessibility and emergency procedures addressed?
  • What recurring costs or specialist skills are needed to preserve the benefit?
  • Which parts of the result are transferable to this building type, climate, code environment and operating model?

These questions convert an attractive headline into a decision that can be reviewed by the owner, designer, contractor and facilities team. They also expose benefits that depend on conditions a project may not share.

How to verify what Els actually presented

The April 10 announcement is enough to verify the session’s existence and its advertised format. It is not enough to summarize the presentation. A defensible account should locate at least one direct record and attribute each substantive statement to it.

  1. Look for a conference program, speaker archive or event recording that identifies the session by its exact title.
  2. Check whether Els or WSP USA published slides, a transcript, a project description or a contemporaneous follow-up.
  3. Confirm that any document belongs to the 2019 Accelerate AEC Innovation Conference rather than a similarly titled talk.
  4. Separate statements made by the presenter from the event organizer’s description and from later commentary.
  5. Preserve dates, project names, locations, measurements and qualifications exactly as the source gives them.

Until such material is available, the responsible description remains limited to the title, speaker, role, event placement and 15-minute, 10-slide format.

Bottom line for construction readers

“Designing for Enhanced Productivity: Promoting Convenience + Control” is a documented 2019 conference-session listing, not a publicly documented design method. The record confirms who was scheduled to speak, where and when the event was held, and how much presentation time was allotted. It does not reveal the proposed system, project evidence, productivity metric or recommendation. Use the title as a prompt to define users, authority, outcomes, failure handling and handover requirements—and seek the original presentation before attributing any technical conclusion to Herbert Els.
