Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: A 3D-printed home normally uses familiar, code-approved plumbing and electrical equipment—water and drain piping, wiring, conduit, outlet boxes, panels, fixtures and appliances. What changes is how those services are routed through or around the printed wall. The wall’s cavities, reinforcement, insulation, openings and evaluated construction details determine whether utilities can be concealed, must run in a service space, or should be mounted on the interior surface.
There is no single plumbing or wiring method for every printed house. In the United States, the design team and the local building official must approve the particular wall system, installation details and applicable code path before printing begins.

What “works” in a 3D-printed home
“3D-printed home” describes a construction method, not a special category of plumbing or electrical equipment. In the concrete-wall projects covered by current U.S. guidance, the building still needs ordinary building services selected for the home’s loads, climate and occupancy. Depending on the approved design, that can include:
- Branch-circuit wiring, service equipment, panels, switches, receptacles and lighting.
- Conduit, raceways and listed outlet or junction boxes where the electrical design requires them.
- Cold- and hot-water supply piping, valves, fixtures and water-heating equipment.
- Drain, waste and vent piping, cleanouts, traps and sanitary connections.
- Equipment connections for heating, cooling, ventilation, cooking, laundry and other appliances.
The printed shell does not make an unapproved pipe, cable or box acceptable. Each product and installation must satisfy the applicable electrical, plumbing, structural, fire, energy and accessibility requirements for the project’s jurisdiction. The unusual part is coordinating those conventional services with a wall that is fabricated layer by layer rather than framed with open studs.

Why the printed wall changes service routing
A framed wall gives an installer a predictable stud bay that can be drilled, notched and enclosed after rough-in. A printed concrete wall may instead be a thick shell with engineered voids, ribs, reinforcement, insulation, embedded elements and carefully controlled openings. Those features can be essential to structural capacity, fire performance, moisture control or the wall system’s evaluation.
For that reason, a penetration made after printing is not automatically equivalent to a hole in a conventional stud. Cutting, drilling or chasing the wall can interfere with reinforcement, reduce cover, damage a listed assembly or invalidate details used for approval. The stamped drawings, the printed-wall evaluation report, the designer and the authority having jurisdiction must establish what alterations are permitted.
The practical consequence is that services must be designed with the wall, not added to it as an afterthought. The printer, structural engineer, mechanical/electrical/plumbing designers, general contractor and inspector need a coordinated set of drawings showing every chase, sleeve, box, penetration, access panel and finish transition.

Planned cavities and service chases
An engineered wall can include cavities or chases sized for wiring, conduit and boxes. If those spaces are shown in the approved design and remain accessible for inspection and maintenance, they can provide a concealed route. The design must account for conductor fill, bending space, box depth, fastening, separation from other services, fire stopping and thermal details in the same way a conventional installation does.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Because the cavity is part of the printed geometry, its dimensions and location have to be fixed before fabrication. A late change to move a receptacle may require a revised wall detail rather than a quick field modification.
Conduit, raceway and accessible service walls
Where the wall cannot safely contain wiring, a raceway or conduit can be installed on an interior finish, in a furred-out service wall or within a separate utility chase. An interior service wall can also provide mounting depth for boxes and leave wiring accessible without cutting the printed shell. The trade-off is visible or thicker interior construction and the need to protect the raceway from impact.
Printed or integrated electrical components
UL 3401 evaluations can address additively manufactured building elements and may include evaluation of printed outlet boxes, conduit and electrical enclosures when the report’s scope covers those components. That does not mean every printer or project may print electrical parts. Only the components and configurations identified by the project documentation can rely on that evaluation; other equipment remains subject to the applicable product and installation requirements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat not to assume
- Do not assume a cable can be buried in any hollow portion of a printed wall.
- Do not drill a box opening or chase after printing without written direction from the responsible designer and building official.
- Do not treat a UL 3401 report as a replacement for all electrical installation rules, inspections or permits.
- Do not close a service cavity until required rough-in, fire-stopping and inspection steps are complete.
Plumbing systems: how pipes can be accommodated
Designed chases and plumbing walls
Supply, drain and vent piping can be placed in planned chases, cavities or an interior plumbing wall when the dimensions, support and access are designed for the actual house. The layout must handle pipe diameter, fittings, drainage slope, vent routing, pressure, hot-water expansion, insulation, freeze protection and protection from abrasion or impact.

Drainage is especially unforgiving. A horizontal drain needs the designed fall and adequate cleanout access; a narrow or interrupted printed cavity may not provide either. The plumbing engineer should coordinate structural openings and sleeves before the printer runs, rather than expecting an installer to create a route later.
Surface-mounted or furred plumbing
Exposed or furred-out supply and waste lines can be a sensible choice where concealment would compromise the wall. A service wall can hide piping while preserving access to valves, traps and cleanouts. Surface routes must still be protected, supported and finished to meet plumbing, sanitation, accessibility and fire requirements.
Access to valves, cleanouts and leak-prone points
Keep shutoff valves, cleanouts, appliance connections, pump components and likely leak points reachable after finishes are installed. A pipe hidden in a permanently sealed printed void may be difficult to inspect or repair, even if it is technically possible to install. Access panels and removable finishes should be shown on the drawings, with enough clearance to operate valves and remove service parts.

Materials are project-specific
The available evidence does not identify one universal pipe material, fitting system or insulation product for printed homes. Selection depends on water temperature and pressure, local rules, manufacturer instructions, compatibility with the wall assembly and the project’s approval documents. A product that is suitable in a conventional house is not automatically approved for an embedded location in a printed wall.

Surface mounting: a documented option, not a universal rule
An Austin building official, Beth Culver, described one printed-concrete project to UL Solutions by saying, “Because of the nature of this construction, a lot of things have to be surface-mounted on the interior.” She also framed the practical questions as, “Where do you put the plumbing?” and “Where do you put the electrical?”
Those comments explain why a service wall, raceway or visible piping may be selected on a particular project. They do not establish that every 3D-printed house requires surface mounting. Wall thickness, cavity geometry, reinforcement, finishes, local amendments and the project’s evaluation report can produce a different result elsewhere.
Surface installation can simplify access and future changes, but it consumes interior space and requires careful treatment at attachments, corners, penetrations and finish transitions. The attachment method must not damage the printed shell or conflict with reinforcement, waterproofing or fire-rated construction.

Plan MEP work before the printer starts
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s builder checklist specifically asks whether the technology company has plans and details for incorporating plumbing and electrical systems. Treat that as a design gate, not paperwork to complete after printing.

- Identify the approval path. Ask the building department which codes, local amendments, alternative-material provisions and evaluation reports apply to this wall system and site.
- Obtain the current wall-system documents. Review stamped structural drawings, material specifications, reinforcement details, fire and thermal information, penetration limits and the scope of any UL 3401 or other compliance report.
- Map every service. Place panels, meters, risers, branch circuits, water entries, drains, vents, equipment connections, valves, cleanouts and access panels on coordinated drawings.
- Choose the routing strategy for each zone. A house may combine concealed chases, a furred service wall and surface-mounted raceway rather than use one method everywhere.
- Coordinate tolerances and sequence. Define sleeves, embeds, boxes and block-outs, including their dimensions, elevations and allowable movement. Confirm who installs each item and when it is inspected.
- Resolve conflicts before fabrication. Check that structural reinforcement, insulation, openings, ducts, pipes and electrical boxes do not occupy the same space or violate required clearances.
- Document field changes. If an obstruction is discovered, stop and obtain a revised detail or written direction. Do not improvise by cutting the printed shell.
Codes, evaluations and who approves the work
UL 3401 evaluations
UL describes UL 3401 as an evaluation framework for building elements fabricated additively. Its reports are intended to help a code official determine compliance with applicable installation codes through equivalency or alternative-materials-and-methods provisions. The report can document specific printed elements and, where included, components such as outlet boxes, conduit and electrical enclosures.
The report is not a blanket permit for all plumbing and electrical work in the house. Systems outside its scope still have to satisfy the applicable installation codes, product standards, plans and inspections.
Model-code provisions and local adoption
Public-comment material for the 2019 International Residential Code’s Appendix U described a pathway using a UL 3401 certified design organization and building-official approval. It also stated that systems not covered by the compliance report would be reviewed under applicable code provisions, explicitly including plumbing and electrical. That material is historical model-code content, and an appendix becomes enforceable only when the jurisdiction adopts it by ordinance. Verify the code edition and local amendments in effect for the address.
ICC 1150-2026
ICC 1150-2026, the Standard for Automated Construction Technology for 3D Concrete Walls, addresses printed-wall materials, qualification, inspection, structural design and wall connections. Its published scope does not prescribe which plumbing or electrical systems a finished home must use. It can inform the wall-system side of coordination, but it is not an MEP installation manual.
ICC/MBI 1210-2023
ICC/MBI 1210-2023 addresses planning, designing, fabricating, transporting and assembling MEP system elements for off-site construction, including componentized and modularized systems. A jurisdiction may adopt it for relevant work, but its availability does not prove that it applies automatically to a site-printed home. Ask the building department and design team whether it is part of the project’s adopted framework.
Choosing a routing strategy
| Approach | Serviceability | Coordination with the wall | Items to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planned concealed chase or cavity | Utilities are hidden; repairs may require access panels or more invasive work. | Geometry, reinforcement, insulation and fire details must be fixed before printing. | Approved wall drawings, cavity dimensions, supports, access, fire and thermal requirements. |
| Surface-mounted services or interior service wall | Connections are visible or readily reachable and changes are usually easier. | Can avoid unplanned cuts in the printed shell but uses interior floor area. | Attachment method, impact protection, finish, accessibility and electrical/plumbing rules. |
| Components integrated during fabrication | Can reduce later rough-in if the system is engineered for it. | Requires tight control of printer sequence, component placement, tolerances and inspections. | Report scope, listed components, manufacturer instructions, special inspection and local approval. |
There is no published evidence here establishing a universal winner for cost, durability, installation time or failure rate. The right choice is the one documented for the specific wall, climate, occupancy, maintenance plan and authority having jurisdiction.
Inspection and handover checklist
- Confirm the permit set identifies every penetration, chase, sleeve, box, raceway and access panel.
- Verify that field-installed supports and attachments are compatible with the printed wall and do not damage reinforcement or protective layers.
- Photograph concealed plumbing and wiring before closure, with locations measured from permanent references.
- Complete required pressure, drainage, insulation, continuity, grounding and functional tests before finishes conceal the work.
- Label shutoffs, panels, cleanouts, disconnects and service cavities so future occupants can find them.
- Give the owner the final coordinated drawings, product information, inspection records and maintenance clearances.
Limits of the answer
The conclusions above apply primarily to U.S. projects using printed concrete walls. Polymer, composite or other printed systems may have different thermal, fire, structural and fastening characteristics. Requirements also change by state, municipality, adopted code edition, building type and project-specific evaluation. Before construction, confirm the current local code, the wall-system report, the stamped MEP plans and the building official’s interpretation for the actual address.
