The American Society of Landscape Architects’ 2020 Planting Design PPN dispatches show how gardens became places for connection, daily restoration, and ecological attention during the first months of COVID-19 restrictions. They also offer practical principles for landscape architects, builders, and property owners choosing and caring for plants.
What the 2020 Planting Design PPN dispatches are
“Dispatches from the Planting Design PPN”, published by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) on June 11, 2020, is a collection of professional reflections rather than a statistical study. Mark Dennis, ASLA, a senior landscape architect in Washington, D.C.; Anne Spafford, ASLA, MLA, an associate professor at North Carolina State University in Raleigh; and David Hopman, ASLA, PLA, an associate professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, describe what gardens and planted places meant to them during the early COVID-19 pandemic.

Restrictions and forced isolation changed how people used houses, courtyards, sidewalks, and parks. The contributors’ accounts connect those immediate experiences to a broader design argument: planting should be planned for human welcome and enjoyment while also supporting the ecological systems in which a landscape operates. For construction and landscape teams, that means treating plants, soil, public-space care, and social use as parts of one project rather than as separate finishing details.
What each contributor observed
Mark Dennis: a small garden as neighborhood infrastructure
Dennis writes about a small Capitol Hill garden and a courtyard seating area in Washington, D.C. The spaces gave him a way to reconnect with neighbors, street life, and urban ecology at a time when ordinary social contact was restricted. The account is deliberately modest: a garden does not need to be large or formally public to influence how people encounter one another.

The seating area made pauses and conversations possible without requiring an indoor gathering. Planting provided a setting in which people could notice seasonal change and the nonhuman life moving through the neighborhood. In a dense district, that combination of social edge and living material can make a private or semi-private landscape feel connected to the larger street.
Dennis also points to the preservation and maintenance of public spaces. A park, sidewalk planting, or civic courtyard cannot serve residents if it is allowed to deteriorate. His observation is a reminder for project teams that construction completion is not the same as landscape success. Access, repair, horticultural care, and continued stewardship determine whether a planted place remains welcoming.
Anne Spafford: work breaks, observation, and sharing
Spafford describes using her garden to interrupt work at home. She watched blooms and pollinators, pulled weeds, and used routine outdoor tasks as exercise and relief from anxiety. These are her personal observations, not clinical findings or measured health outcomes. Their value is in showing the many small ways a garden can structure a difficult day.
Her account also emphasizes attention. Looking closely at flowers, insects, and changing conditions turns a garden into a place of observation rather than a static backdrop. Hand-weeding provides a direct, physical task that can be done in short intervals. For a residential landscape, a mixture of visible seasonal events and manageable maintenance jobs may make the space more usable than a planting scheme that offers color but no reason to engage with it.
Spafford shared strawberries with neighbors, her postal carrier, and birds. That detail broadens the idea of garden benefit beyond the person who owns or tends the plot. A productive planting can create small exchanges across a property line and can also provide food for wildlife. The episode illustrates how design decisions about edible plants, access, and generosity can influence a neighborhood’s social life without turning a garden into a formal community program.
David Hopman: put plants at the center of design decisions
Hopman makes the most explicit professional case for plant-centered design. He urges designers to consider native plants, sense of place, environmental footprint, and the effects of chemical fertilizers and other chemicals on soil and food webs. The goal is not simply to specify attractive species. It is to understand what a planting asks of its site and what consequences it creates for organisms beyond the project boundary.

His central statement is: “Elevating plants in our design thinking is more important than ever for their value to both people and to the other millions of lifeforms with whom we share the environment.” That sentence links human experience to ecological responsibility. A successful planting must work as an inhabitable place for people while remaining compatible with soil organisms, insects, birds, and other parts of the food web.

Plants should relate to local conditions and cultural or ecological identity. Native status is an important consideration, but it is not a substitute for checking a species’ actual suitability for the site, its maintenance needs, and its behavior in the local landscape.
Planting principles that emerge from the dispatches
Design for more than visual effect
Color, form, and seasonal interest remain legitimate design objectives, but the dispatches ask what else a planting does. Does it provide shade or a reason to linger? Can residents observe pollinators or harvest food? Does it connect a courtyard to the street instead of creating an unused leftover strip? Does it offer habitat while avoiding demands that the site cannot support?
For a construction project, these questions should be asked during programming and schematic design, not after hardscape drawings are complete. The answers can affect the location of seating, path widths, sightlines, irrigation, soil preparation, and the amount of area reserved for plants.
Use native status and regional suitability together
Hopman specifically calls attention to native plants, but a responsible decision also considers regional fit. A plant may be native to a broad area yet unsuitable for a particular exposure, soil, moisture regime, or maintenance capacity. Conversely, a nonnative ornamental may perform reliably in a constrained setting while still requiring careful assessment for invasiveness and ecological effects.

| Planting choice to evaluate | Questions for the project team | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Native and locally characteristic species | Is the plant native or regionally characteristic here? Does it suit the site’s light, soil, and water conditions? | Can strengthen sense of place and support relationships with local organisms when properly matched to the site. |
| Well-adapted ornamental species | What is the plant’s maintenance demand, spread, and long-term behavior? Could it escape cultivation or displace other plants? | May solve a design or performance need, but requires ecological and maintenance review rather than automatic approval. |
| Edible plants | Who will harvest them, how will access be managed, and can the planting be maintained without unsafe chemical exposure? | Can create sharing and observation opportunities, as Spafford’s strawberries did, while adding management responsibilities. |
| High-input lawn or display planting | How much irrigation, fertilizer, mowing, pruning, and pest control will it require? | May deliver a uniform appearance but can increase environmental footprint and reduce time available for attentive stewardship. |
Make environmental footprint a design criterion
Environmental footprint includes more than the material used to install a landscape. A project team should consider imported soil and plants, irrigation demand, replacement rates, equipment access, fertilizer, pesticides, and the energy and labor required over the life of the planting. The dispatches do not provide a numerical method for calculating that footprint, so no single score can be assigned from their accounts. They do provide a reason to ask the question before selecting a palette or maintenance regime.
Construction documents can make the intent practical by identifying soil requirements, protecting existing vegetation, specifying appropriate mulch, and stating how irrigation is to be adjusted as plants establish. Clear notes reduce the risk that a low-input design will be managed as if it were a high-input display landscape.
How to apply the ideas on a building or landscape project
1. Read the site as a social and ecological setting
Map where people already pause, walk, deliver mail, wait, or look out from windows. Note existing trees, drainage, sun and shade, compacted areas, wildlife activity, and connections to adjacent streets or open space. A small courtyard may be socially important even if it is not visible in a conventional site-area calculation.
2. Define the experiences the planting should support
Write specific objectives such as sitting with a neighbor, taking a short work break, watching seasonal change, harvesting herbs, or providing pollinator forage. Avoid vague instructions such as “make it attractive.” Experience-based objectives help the architect, builder, and horticultural contractor coordinate paths, seating, planting height, lighting, and access.
3. Set plant-selection criteria before naming species
Record the site’s light, soil texture, drainage, available water, winter conditions, mature clearance, and expected maintenance. Then evaluate native status, regional suitability, habitat value, environmental footprint, and sense of place. This order prevents a favorite plant from driving the design before its consequences are understood.
4. Protect soil and existing life during construction
Limit unnecessary compaction, keep stored materials out of planting areas, and preserve existing vegetation that contributes shade or habitat. Soil is not merely a medium for holding roots; it is part of the food web Hopman asks designers to consider. If grading or utility work must disturb it, document how the planting soil will be restored before installation.

5. Build social edges deliberately
Use seating, low plantings, paths, and thresholds to make casual contact comfortable without sacrificing privacy. Dennis’s courtyard example suggests that a modest seating area can reconnect a home or block to street life. Place furnishings where people can see planting and passersby, and ensure routes remain accessible for residents, visitors, and service workers.

6. Plan for observation and participation
Include plants with staggered bloom periods, visible structure, edible yields, or habitat value when those features fit the site. Provide a practical way to reach beds for weeding and harvesting. A simple hand weeder can support routine care, but the tool itself is less important than making maintenance safe, convenient, and realistic for the people who will do it.
7. Write a stewardship plan with the handover documents
State watering expectations during establishment, pruning windows, weed-management methods, replacement responsibilities, and who will inspect the planting. Explain which changes are normal seasonal behavior and which indicate a problem. Public-space preservation, a concern raised by Dennis, depends on this continuing responsibility rather than on an installation-day inspection alone.
8. Review chemical decisions through the whole system
Before specifying fertilizer or pest-control products, identify the soil, plant, and food-web consequences. Ask whether a cultural or mechanical practice can solve the problem, whether the treatment could affect pollinators or other organisms, and how people will access the space afterward. Hopman’s warning is not a blanket prohibition stated in the dispatches; it is a direction to account for chemical effects instead of treating them as invisible inputs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Maintenance is part of the design
The contributors’ experiences make maintenance visible as a source of value rather than a nuisance after construction. Spafford’s weeding and observation gave her purposeful outdoor activity. For another owner, the same task may be burdensome, so a planting should not depend on an unrealistic level of unpaid labor. Designers should distinguish between maintenance that invites participation and maintenance that overwhelms the user.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse clear bed boundaries, reachable planting areas, durable paths, and species with compatible growth rates. Group plants with similar water and care needs so irrigation and inspection are straightforward. Leave enough room for workers to prune, weed, and replace plants without damaging adjacent beds or hardscape. In shared or public areas, establish a schedule and a responsible party before opening the space.

Maintenance also protects ecological intent. If weeds are removed indiscriminately, beneficial volunteer plants may be lost; if fertilizer is applied by habit, soil and food webs may receive unnecessary chemical loads. A written plan can identify which plants are wanted, which weeds must be controlled, and when intervention is justified.
What the dispatches can—and cannot—demonstrate
The article offers firsthand professional testimony from a specific moment in 2020. It does not report participant numbers, controlled comparisons, quantified biodiversity gains, or clinical measurements of anxiety, exercise, or health. Spafford’s report of relief from anxiety should therefore be presented as her experience, not as proof that gardening produces a measured therapeutic effect for everyone.
Likewise, the dispatches do not rank plant species, prescribe one universal palette, or test a particular hand tool, fertilizer, or landscape plan. Their contribution is conceptual and practical: they show why gardens can matter socially and personally, and why plant decisions should account for ecological relationships. Project teams still need local horticultural knowledge, code review, accessibility checks, water planning, and a maintenance agreement appropriate to the site.

A construction-minded reading of the message
For builders and landscape professionals, the strongest lesson is coordination. A welcoming garden depends on grading, soil, drainage, circulation, seating, planting, and maintenance working together. If those elements are divided into isolated scopes, the social and ecological benefits described by the contributors can disappear through small omissions: a compacted bed, an inaccessible path, no place to sit, an irrigation system that cannot be adjusted, or a maintenance contract that assumes constant chemical treatment.
The Planting Design PPN dispatches invite a different standard. Ask what the landscape enables people to do, what local life it supports, and what resources it consumes over time. Then carry those answers from concept drawings into specifications, construction protection measures, commissioning, and long-term care. That is how a small garden, courtyard, or public planting can become more than decoration: it can be a durable setting for connection, attention, and ecological responsibility.
