What Is Pick-and-Carry on a Telehandler, and How Does It Work?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick-and-carry is the practice of lifting a load with a telehandler and then traveling while the machine continues to support it. The load may rest on forks, or it may hang from a manufacturer-approved lifting point or attachment. Those are different operating cases: a fork-supported load is carried by the carriage, while a suspended load can swing and change the machine’s effective load center.

“Pick-and-carry” is not a blanket permission to move any load with any telehandler. The exact machine, attachment, lifting point, load weight, load center, rigging, route, ground and local rules determine whether the operation is allowed. The current operator’s manual and legible capacity chart for that configuration control the lift.

What pick-and-carry means on a telehandler

In a pick-and-carry lift, the operator picks up a load, keeps it supported by the telehandler and drives to another location before setting it down. The machine is both the lifting equipment and the transport equipment during the move.

Load arrangement How the load is supported Main control issue
Fork-supported travel The load rests on forks attached to the fork carriage. Keep the load stable, within the chart, and positioned so the machine remains stable while traveling.
Suspended-load travel The load hangs from an approved lifting point or approved suspended-load attachment. Control swing and changing load center; use only the attachment and lifting point approved for that telehandler.

A sling or chain hanging from ordinary forks is not an acceptable shortcut. The Terex Genie GTH-1056 Operator’s Manual states: “Do not suspend loads using slings or chains from the forks or fork carriage.” Other telehandlers can have different approved arrangements, so the rule for the machine in front of you comes from its own manual and chart.

Terminology used by other industries provides context but does not create telehandler authorization. A United States Coast Guard bulletin dated March 6, 2025 describes mobile-crane pick-and-carry as traveling with a suspended load and warns of increased mishap risk. WorkSafe Victoria uses the phrase for an excavator lifting and traveling with a suspended load. Their equipment-specific requirements must not be transferred to a telehandler.

How a telehandler pick-and-carry operation works

A competent operator treats the move as a planned lift followed by controlled travel, not as ordinary driving with a load. The broad sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the load case. Decide whether the load will remain on forks or be suspended. Identify the load’s weight, dimensions, center of gravity and any rigging weight.
  2. Confirm machine and attachment approval. Match the telehandler model, attachment, lifting point and intended task to the manufacturer’s instructions. A generic hook, sling or chain does not establish approval.
  3. Read the correct capacity chart. Use the legible chart for that exact telehandler and attachment. Check the boom position, reach, load center and travel condition shown by the manufacturer. The headline capacity printed on a machine is not a universal allowance for every boom position.
  4. Inspect the work area. Check ground bearing, soft or loose soil, uneven surfaces, slopes, overhead obstructions, traffic, visibility and the route to the landing point. Keep people out of the fall zone.
  5. Pick the load using the prescribed method. Position the machine squarely where possible, engage the load or approved lifting point as the manual directs, and verify that the load is secure before moving.
  6. Set the travel position. Retract the boom as far as practical, keep the load low while preserving clearance and visibility, and make sure the machine’s configuration remains within the applicable chart.
  7. Travel gradually. Use the slowest practical speed, avoid abrupt steering, acceleration and braking, and continuously monitor the load, ground and people around the machine. Stop if the load begins to swing or the route becomes unsafe.
  8. Place the load. Approach the landing point under control, keep personnel clear, set the load onto a supportable surface, release the attachment only when stable and then withdraw as directed by the manual.

This sequence is an explanatory overview, not a substitute for a lift plan, operator training or the current manual. The machine manufacturer and applicable jurisdiction determine the exact procedure.

Why suspended pick-and-carry is more demanding

The load can swing

A fork-supported pallet normally moves with the carriage. A suspended load can swing forward, backward or sideways after acceleration, braking, steering or a ground shock. The operator must prevent free swinging and avoid movements that amplify it. If the approved attachment or manual requires a tag line, tether or other control, use only that specified method; do not improvise rigging.

The effective load center can change

Telehandler charts are based on defined load centers and machine configurations. The GTH-1056 manual cautions that its charts are designed for stationary load centers, while a suspended load can change its load center as it moves. That dynamic behavior is why a chart must be read for the exact setup and why no universal percentage derating should be invented for travel. The cited manual passages do not provide a single numeric reduction that applies to every suspended move.

Travel adds dynamic forces

Turning, stopping, uneven terrain and changes in slope can shift the load and alter stability. A machine that appears within capacity while stationary may become unstable if the boom is extended, the load is high, the surface is weak or the operator makes a sudden movement.

Capacity: the numbers that must be checked

Capacity is configuration-specific. Before lifting, verify all of the following against the manufacturer’s chart:

  • Telehandler model and, where applicable, machine configuration or serial-number range.
  • Attachment type and the attachment’s rated capacity.
  • Load weight, including pallets, spreader beams, slings, hooks and other rigging.
  • Load center and the distance from the fork face or approved lifting point.
  • Boom angle, extension and the intended travel or placement position.
  • Ground and slope conditions addressed by the manual or site plan.

Never substitute the largest number on a data plate for the chart point that matches the actual reach and attachment. If the chart is missing, illegible or does not cover the attachment, stop and obtain the correct information from the manufacturer or a qualified supervisor.

Approved attachments and lifting points

For a suspended load, the load path must be designed by the telehandler manufacturer or an authorized attachment supplier. Follow the attachment instructions for connecting, securing and releasing the load. The designated lifting point may be on a hook, jib, winch or other approved device; its location and rating are not interchangeable with the forks.

Do not attach slings or chains to the forks or fork carriage when the applicable manual prohibits it. Doing so can create an unapproved load path, move the load center, damage the carriage and leave the operator without a valid capacity rating. If the job needs a suspended lift and the machine has no approved configuration, choose equipment and an attachment that are specifically rated for that work rather than modifying the machine in the field.

Travel controls for a suspended load

Speed

The Genie GTH-1056 manual directs operators not to exceed walking speed—2 mph (3.2 km/h)—with a suspended load. That limit belongs to the cited GTH-1056 instructions; it is not a universal telehandler rule. Check the current manual for the machine being used, including any lower site limit.

Boom and load height

Keep the boom retracted as much as practical and carry the load low while retaining the visibility and clearance needed for the route. Raising or extending the boom can increase the overturning effect and may place the machine outside its chart.

Steering, braking and slopes

Move smoothly and avoid abrupt turns, acceleration and braking. The GTH-1056 guidance advises against crossing inclines and calls for extreme care when climbing or descending. Do not infer a universal slope angle from that advice; assess the route under the machine’s own instructions and the site’s lift plan.

Visibility and communication

Maintain visibility in the direction of travel. If the load, boom or surroundings obstructs—or could obstruct—your view, use a qualified signal person who can communicate with the operator and maintain visual contact as required by the site procedure. Stop if communication is lost.

People, exclusion zones and falling-load controls

No one should stand under a suspended load or in its potential fall zone. Establish an exclusion area before the pick, account for swing as well as the load’s footprint, and keep pedestrians and other vehicles out of the route. A spotter does not make an unsafe route safe; the operator must still stop when people enter the danger area.

Inspect the attachment, lifting point and rigging before use. Remove damaged or unidentified components from service. Keep the load balanced and secured as the manual specifies. If the load starts to rotate, swing, snag or shift, lower it to a safe position if possible and stop to reassess rather than trying to correct it with speed or a sharp steering input.

Ground and route assessment

A telehandler and its load impose substantial forces on the travel surface. Evaluate whether the ground can support the machine, not merely whether it looks level. Uneven, soft or loose terrain requires extreme caution under Cortland County Policy 500-007, effective April 1, 2026. Check for edges, trenches, voids, recently backfilled areas, wet spots and changes in bearing capacity.

  • Walk or otherwise verify the planned route before the lift.
  • Identify overhead lines, beams, doorways and other clearance hazards.
  • Plan where the machine can stop without leaving the load suspended over people or traffic.
  • Use a spotter where visibility or clearance requires one.
  • Keep the route as short, firm and level as the work allows.

Fork-supported versus suspended travel

Decision point Load on forks Suspended from approved point
Load behavior Usually moves with the carriage, though it can slide or tip. Can swing, rotate and change its effective load center.
Equipment requirement Forks and carriage approved for the load. Manufacturer-approved suspended-load attachment and lifting point.
Capacity basis Chart for the fork attachment, load center and boom position. Chart and instructions for the suspended attachment, load, rigging and configuration.
Travel controls Keep load low, stable and within visibility; avoid abrupt movement. All fork-load controls plus swing control and any suspended-load speed or route limits in the manual.
People protection Keep people clear of the machine and falling or shifting load. Keep people out from under the load and its entire fall and swing zone.

Neither method is categorically safer for every job. The appropriate choice depends on the load, destination, terrain, machine, attachment and applicable rules.

Rules, training and documentation

The GTH-1056 Operator’s Manual, Sixth Edition, Second Printing, directs U.S. operators to understand applicable local rules and standards, including ANSI/ITSDF B56.6 and OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1400–1442, while warning that additional requirements and training may apply. Those references do not turn a generic telehandler into a crane or authorize a suspended lift that the machine’s manual does not cover.

Before work starts, the responsible supervisor should verify operator authorization, machine inspection, attachment approval, chart availability, communication arrangements, exclusion zones and the lift plan required by the jurisdiction or employer. A policy from one agency, such as Cortland County’s, is useful guidance but is not a universal legal standard.

When to stop the operation

Stop and lower or secure the load when any of these conditions occurs:

  • The load weight, center or rigging weight is unknown.
  • The chart does not cover the actual attachment or reach.
  • The approved lifting point or attachment cannot be verified.
  • The load swings freely, snags, rotates unexpectedly or shifts.
  • Ground conditions, slope, overhead clearance or weather change the planned risk.
  • Visibility is lost, the signal person cannot be seen or communication fails.
  • A person enters the fall or swing zone.
  • The machine shows instability, warning indications, damage or an unfamiliar response.

Resolve the issue with the qualified supervisor, manufacturer or equipment provider before resuming. Do not solve an approval or capacity problem by driving faster, raising the boom or adding improvised rigging.

Key takeaway for site planning

Pick-and-carry on a telehandler means lifting and traveling while the machine supports the load. Safe execution depends on identifying whether the load is on forks or suspended, using the exact manufacturer chart and approved load path, controlling the load close to the ground at a controlled speed, assessing the route and ground, and excluding people from the fall zone. The term itself is not a capacity rating or legal authorization; the current manual, qualified operator and applicable rules decide whether the particular move can be performed.
