Color-through fiber cement siding has pigment integrated through the cement-board core instead of applied only as a surface paint. If the face is cut, drilled or lightly chipped, the exposed material is therefore much closer in color to the finished surface. That reduces the contrast of ordinary installation marks and minor wear. It does not make the siding permanently fade-proof: manufacturers acknowledge that integral-color sheets can become somewhat lighter with age, and the amount of change depends on the exact product, finish and exposure.
What color-through fiber cement means
Through-color, integral-color and through-colored all describe the same basic construction. The original manufacturer mixes the final pigment into the fiber-cement material so the color extends through the board’s core. The City of Puyallup’s design guideline defines it as siding in which the final color pigment is integrated through the cement-board core; it specifically says painted fiber-cement board does not qualify.

In a typical through-colored sheet, cement, reinforcing fibers and pigment are formed into a dense panel and cured, often in an autoclave. American Fiber Cement describes its product as a fully compressed, autoclaved sheet with color throughout. The result is different from a board that leaves the factory plain and receives paint on its face.

Why the distinction matters at the job site
A saw cut, drilled hole or small edge chip exposes material that is already similar in hue to the face. The mark can still be visible because its texture and sheen change, but it is less likely to reveal a sharply contrasting white or gray core. American Fiber Cement says its through-color process keeps edge cuts color matched and reduces on-site touch-up.

Color-through does not mean every part of every panel has perfectly identical color. Natural variation can occur between sheets, and the American Fiber Cement specification says the sheet becomes a little lighter with aging. A realistic expectation is lower visual contrast after damage and gradual, limited weathering—not a guarantee of zero color change.
How pigment throughout the board affects fading
Sunlight changes the exposed surface first
Ultraviolet light, heat and moisture act most directly on the outer surface. With a conventional painted board, the coating is the colored layer, so chalking, erosion or loss of pigment changes what you see. With integral color, the same basic pigment is present below the face. If the outermost particles weather away or an edge is exposed, the underlying material remains in the same general color family.
It reduces contrast rather than stopping weathering
Integral pigment cannot prevent all chemical or physical aging. The face can still lighten, and a polished cut edge can reflect light differently from the factory face. Deep gouges may show a different layer or texture even when the hue is close. The practical benefit is that ordinary cuts and small chips are less conspicuous, not that the panel remains visually unchanged forever.

Protective finishes can be added
Some architectural products pair a through-colored core with a separate finish. EQUITONE natura, for example, is specified with a through-colored core and a colored, semi-transparent, double-layer acrylic finish. Swisspearl CARAT is described as through-color with translucent or pigmented top layers. Such a system has two color-related elements: the integral base that limits contrast when the surface is damaged, and a finish that controls sheen, texture and additional weather protection. The finish can weather differently from the core, so its maintenance terms must be read separately.
Through-color versus factory-finished painted siding
Both constructions can be durable. They should not be treated as interchangeable, because the source of the color, the evidence for fade resistance and the warranty language differ.
| Buying factor | Through-color fiber cement | Factory-finished painted fiber cement |
|---|---|---|
| Where the color resides | Pigment is integrated through the cement-board core by the original manufacturer. | Color is primarily a cured coating applied to the board surface. |
| Cut edges and small chips | Exposed material is generally closer in hue to the face, so contrast is reduced. | A cut can expose a contrasting substrate and may need a compatible touch-up coating. |
| Fade evidence | Manufacturers describe gradual lightening and natural variation; no universal fade-free life is established. | Evidence is product-specific and may include accelerated UV testing, field guidance and a finish warranty. |
| Maintenance focus | Keep the surface clean and protect the intended appearance; a topcoat, if present, has its own care requirements. | Wash as directed, monitor the coating and plan for localized touch-up or eventual repainting. |
| Color and texture range | Often emphasizes mineral variation, translucency and the character of an integral surface. | Usually offers a broader catalog of controlled factory colors and uniform sheen. |
| Warranty structure | Read the panel, finish and appearance provisions for the specific series. | Substrate and finish warranties are often separate, with different terms, exclusions and transfer rules. |
The deciding question is not simply whether a product is called fiber cement. Ask whether the named series is integral-color, surface-coated, or a combination of both.

What residential factory finishes document about fading
James Hardie ColorPlus
ColorPlus is a factory-applied finish cured onto the board. James Hardie describes heating and reheating between coats to improve consistency, adhesion, color retention and fade resistance. Its ColorPlus finish carries a 15-year limited warranty, while the fiber-cement substrate carries a separate 30-year warranty. Those periods apply to the stated warranty conditions; they are not a promise that color will look unchanged for 15 years in every climate.

Nichiha Illumination uses factory-applied multilayer coatings. Nichiha reports accelerated weathering and ultraviolet testing, with a 15-year limited finish warranty. Its technical bulletin says the testing simulates more than 15 years of UV, heat and moisture exposure and that color change was typically below delta E 3 for the tested finishes. Delta E is a numerical color-difference measure; the reported threshold is intended to represent a change that is generally difficult to notice, not an absolute absence of change in every installation.
Nichiha’s consumer guidance identifies southern exposure as a common fade challenge and says its AWP products are designed to resist UV. It recommends regular washing and says not to pressure-wash fiber-cement siding. The same guidance describes a 10-to-15-year paint cycle for its products. That is a planning interval, not an instruction to repaint every panel on a fixed date regardless of condition.

Allura Spectrum
Allura lists a 30-year transferable siding warranty and separate coating warranties, including 15 years for Spectrum. Its lap-siding information identifies Spectrum as color-finished siding and cites ASTM C1186 and ASTM C1185 testing. Confirm which warranty applies to the exact profile and finish, because a substrate warranty and a coating warranty cover different risks.
Will scratches and cut edges show a white core?
On a genuine through-colored board, a normal saw cut or small chip should not expose an uncolored white layer in the way an unpainted substrate can. The exposed edge is intended to remain visually compatible with the face. This is one of the strongest practical reasons to specify integral color for designs with many visible joints, reveals or field cuts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat does not make damage invisible. A fresh cut may be lighter or darker because it is unweathered, and its roughness can catch light. A deep impact can remove enough material to expose a different internal texture. Dirt, sealant or metal marks can also stand out. For high-visibility work, make a sample cut from the actual lot and view it at the distance and lighting expected on the building.

How often does fiber-cement siding need repainting?
Through-colored panels
There is no universal repainting interval for integral-color siding. If the core supplies the visible color and the surface is aging evenly, repainting may not be part of the normal maintenance plan. If the product also has an acrylic, translucent or pigmented finish, that finish may eventually need attention even though the core remains colored. Follow the series-specific maintenance instructions rather than applying a generic paint schedule.
Factory-painted panels
Factory finishes are designed to delay repainting, not eliminate it permanently. The documented examples above include 15-year limited finish warranties, and Nichiha describes a 10-to-15-year paint-cycle expectation. Actual timing depends on exposure, orientation, moisture, cleaning and the coating’s condition. Repaint when the finish shows widespread failure, not merely because a calendar date has arrived, and use a coating approved for that product.
Touch-up after installation
Use the manufacturer’s compatible touch-up material for factory-finished boards. James Hardie documents ColorPlus touch-up kits formulated to resist aging, color change and chalking. Check current availability and compatibility with the exact color and product before buying. On through-colored panels, touch-up may be needed for a finish or for a conspicuous repair even when the exposed core itself is color matched.
Recommended Free Tools
Maintenance that protects the color
- Wash according to the product manual so airborne dirt does not create a false impression of fading.
- Use the manufacturer’s recommended method and water pressure. Nichiha specifically advises against pressure-washing fiber-cement siding.
- Inspect south- and west-facing elevations, parapets and areas near reflective surfaces more often because they receive stronger or longer heat and UV exposure.
- Record the product series, color, lot information and finish type when the siding is installed; those details simplify later touch-up or warranty questions.
- Replace or repair damaged pieces with material from the same series when possible. A different core or sheen can create a larger mismatch than the original defect.
Specification and installation checklist
- Identify the color construction. Ask the manufacturer or dealer to state in writing whether the selected series is through-colored, surface-coated or a through-colored core with a protective finish. Do not rely on the word “pre-finished” alone.
- Request finish documentation. Look for UV or accelerated-weathering results, field-exposure information, cleaning instructions and the exact finish warranty. Note whether the warranty covers color change, chalking, peeling, substrate failure or only manufacturing defects.
- Check the exposure. Document the building’s orientation, nearby water or salt, high-altitude sun, reflected heat and shaded, damp elevations. A product’s laboratory result applies to its tested finish and conditions, not automatically to every site.
- Review edge appearance. Make a sample cut, drill a representative hole if appropriate, and inspect it after cleaning. Confirm that the visible edge meets the design intent before full installation.
- Preserve the factory surface. Store and handle boards as directed, avoid unnecessary abrasion and use only approved touch-up products. A damaged coating can weather differently from an intact one.
- Set a maintenance record. Keep the care schedule, warranty registration and paint or touch-up information with the building records. Schedule visual inspections before problems become widespread.
How to compare claims and warranties
Manufacturers use different evidence, so compare like with like. An accelerated test that simulates more than 15 years of UV, heat and moisture is useful for the tested coating, but it is not the same as 15 years of field exposure on your elevation. A finish warranty can limit chalking or color change while excluding installation errors, unusual pollution, poor cleaning or repairs with unapproved paint.
Read the warranty’s transfer rules and start date. Allura’s siding warranty is described as transferable, while finish warranties may have separate terms. James Hardie separates its 15-year ColorPlus finish warranty from its 30-year substrate warranty. Those examples show why the longest number in a brochure should not be treated as the expected repainting date.
Bottom line for a siding decision
Choose color-through fiber cement when minimizing the visual contrast of field cuts, drilled penetrations and small chips is important, and when a mineral or translucent appearance suits the design. Expect gradual lightening and natural variation rather than a permanent, fade-free surface. Choose a factory-finished product when a controlled color catalog, documented coating tests or a defined finish warranty matters more, and evaluate its exact exposure and maintenance instructions. In either case, the reliable comparison is product-specific: core construction, topcoat, UV evidence, cleaning requirements, repainting guidance and warranty scope.
