Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSet a compact excavator’s auxiliary hydraulic flow to the attachment manufacturer’s specified range, then use the lowest selectable setting that delivers the required performance. Do not select maximum flow automatically. Check the attachment’s required gallons per minute (gpm) and maximum pressure, the excavator’s output for that auxiliary circuit, the coupler and hose arrangement, and the machine’s rated capacity before operating.
There is no universal compact-excavator flow setting
“Low,” “medium,” and “maximum” are machine control settings, not industry-wide flow values. A low setting on one excavator can produce a different gpm than a low setting on another, and the same attachment category can contain models with different requirements. The correct setting is therefore attachment-specific and model-specific.

Hydraulic flow is the volume of oil delivered to the tool, usually expressed in gallons per minute. It largely determines how quickly a hydraulic motor turns or how fast a cylinder cycles. Pressure, expressed in pounds per square inch (psi), determines the force or torque available when the tool is working. An attachment can have enough flow but too little pressure, or acceptable pressure with too much flow. Either mismatch can reduce output, create heat and shorten component life.
Use the attachment manual or specification plate as the controlling reference. Treat the excavator manual’s auxiliary-flow table as the other half of the match. If either document gives a range, begin at the lower end and increase only as needed while staying below the attachment’s maximum pressure and the excavator’s rated output.

Practical starting settings by attachment
Bobcat’s compact-excavator brochure gives useful examples of how tool type changes the starting point. These are directional settings from that brochure, not universal gpm values for every manufacturer or model.
| Attachment or use | Starting setting | Reason and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PowerTilt or Hydra-Tilt swing accessory | Low | Bobcat says low flow provides precise control of these swing accessories. |
| Clamp | Medium | Bobcat describes medium flow as suitable for its clamp attachment. |
| Hydraulic breaker | Maximum or the attachment’s specified upper range | Bobcat lists breakers among maximum-flow tools. Confirm the breaker’s required gpm, maximum psi and duty cycle before selecting maximum. |
| Auger | Maximum or the attachment’s specified upper range | Bobcat lists augers as maximum-flow examples, but the exact requirement varies by auger motor and bit size. |
| Compactor | Maximum or the attachment’s specified upper range | Bobcat lists compactors among maximum-flow tools. Verify pressure and continuous-duty limits because compactors can run for long periods. |
The table is a starting point only. A breaker marked for 12–18 gpm should not be forced onto a 25-gpm setting merely because another breaker uses maximum flow. Conversely, a motor attachment that needs the upper end of its range may run slowly or stall if the auxiliary circuit is left on low.
Match flow and pressure before changing a setting
Read the attachment specification first
Locate the required flow range, maximum operating pressure, inlet and return-port requirements, and any continuous-duty limitation. Some tools publish one preferred flow value; others provide a range. Use the range exactly as written, including whether it applies to one-way or two-way auxiliary operation.
Check the excavator’s actual auxiliary circuit
Read the excavator manual for the selected circuit, not just a headline machine specification. Auxiliary output can differ by circuit, engine condition, control mode and optional hydraulic package. Confirm both available gpm and relief pressure. A machine’s main-system pressure is not proof that the auxiliary circuit can safely deliver the same pressure to an attachment.

Stay below the lower of the two pressure limits
The safe operating pressure is limited by the attachment, hoses, coupler, fittings and excavator circuit. If the attachment allows 3,500 psi but the excavator auxiliary circuit is rated lower, use the excavator limit. If the excavator can produce more pressure than the attachment allows, the attachment’s lower rating controls.
Caterpillar notes that setting auxiliary flow to match the work-tool selection and hammer settings helps maximize tool performance and lifespan. This applies especially to breakers, where an incorrect setting can cause poor impact performance, excess heat or premature wear.
High-flow versus standard-flow attachments
“High flow” is not a single universal standard. Caterpillar’s 2025 guidance describes a typical high-flow circuit as exceeding 26 gpm and 3,300 psi, while describing a typical standard-flow machine as 22 gpm. Those are typical figures, not a guarantee for every compact excavator or attachment.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Published example | Figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Caterpillar typical high-flow threshold (2025) | More than 26 gpm and 3,300 psi | Use as Caterpillar’s general definition, not as a universal industry cutoff. |
| Caterpillar typical standard-flow machine (2025) | 22 gpm | Illustrates a common standard-flow output; check the exact excavator model. |
| Caterpillar XPS high-flow example (2025) | 33 gpm at 4,050 psi | An example of a specific high-flow configuration, not a target setting for every tool. |
| John Deere compact-construction attachment examples (approximately 2022) | 14–42 gpm; up to 3,500 psi maximum operating pressure | Shows how widely attachment requirements can vary across models. |
A high-flow excavator can generally operate a standard-flow attachment when the auxiliary circuit is adjusted to the attachment’s standard-flow requirement. The reverse is not recommended: a standard-flow excavator should not be expected to run a high-flow tool simply because the coupler fits. The machine may not supply enough oil volume, and attempting to compensate with an incorrect pressure or control setting can overheat the circuit or damage the tool.

Check the tool’s motor displacement and required flow even when the carrier is advertised as high flow. Supplying more oil than the motor can accept can overspeed the motor, raise case-drain pressure or exceed seals and bearings’ limits.
Step-by-step: choose the correct auxiliary-flow setting
- Identify the exact attachment model. Record the model and serial number where available. Do not rely on a generic category such as “breaker” or “auger,” because models in the same category can have different gpm and psi requirements.
- Find the required flow and pressure. Use the attachment manual, specification sheet or rating plate. Note the minimum and maximum gpm, maximum operating pressure, preferred pressure range, one-way or two-way circuit requirement, and any continuous-use limit.
- Find the excavator’s auxiliary output. In the machine manual, identify the auxiliary circuit being used and its available flow and pressure for the selected control mode. Confirm whether a high-flow option, second auxiliary circuit or electronic flow setting is required.
- Select the lowest machine setting that reaches the attachment’s required range. If the attachment needs 14–18 gpm and the excavator offers selectable settings that bracket that range, choose the first setting that reaches at least the required minimum. Use proportional control, if fitted, to fine-tune speed rather than leaving the circuit at maximum continuously.
- Verify the complete interface. Confirm the coupler, mounting pins, hydraulic quick-connects, hose length and routing, case drain if required, electrical control kit and auxiliary-control configuration. A flow match does not make an incompatible mount safe.
- Check capacity and stability. Compare attachment weight and width with the excavator’s rated lift capacity, counterweight and operating envelope. A tool can be hydraulically compatible yet unsafe because it exceeds the carrier’s capacity or reduces visibility and stability.
- Test at low demand first. Start the engine and auxiliary circuit according to both manuals. Operate the attachment briefly at the selected setting, watching for sluggish motion, overspeed, abnormal noise, leaks, excessive heat or unstable machine behavior. Stop immediately if any warning sign appears.
- Increase only within the documented range. If performance is inadequate and the machine remains within its rated flow and pressure, increase the setting gradually. Never exceed the attachment’s maximum gpm or psi to compensate for a problem caused by a blocked filter, damaged coupler, undersized hose or incorrect control configuration.
Compatibility checks beyond the flow dial
Coupler and mounting interface
The attachment must be approved for the excavator’s machine family and coupler. Pin spacing, pin diameter, ear width and hydraulic-port position all matter. A coupler that physically latches but does not provide the correct geometry can create excessive stress or unsafe clearance.
Hoses, fittings and return path
Hoses and quick-connects must be rated for the circuit’s pressure and flow. Check that supply and return lines are connected to the correct ports and that a motor attachment’s case drain, when specified, returns to the tank through the required low-pressure path. Incorrect routing can damage a hydraulic motor even when the flow setting is correct.
Controls and electrical options
Some excavators require an auxiliary-flow control kit, a selectable work-tool profile or a dedicated hammer mode. A breaker may need a one-way circuit and return-to-tank arrangement, while a clamp or tilt accessory may require two-way control. Confirm the machine’s control requirements before connecting the tool.

Rated capacity and attachment dimensions
Bobcat’s compatibility guidance emphasizes starting with the correct hydraulic package and then confirming the full approved match. Include attachment weight, width, center of gravity and the excavator’s rated capacity in the check. A wide or heavy attachment can reduce lift capacity and stability even if its hydraulic demand is within range.
Duty cycle and heat management
Flow that is acceptable for intermittent use may be unsuitable for continuous operation. Augers and compactors can run for extended periods; monitor hydraulic temperature and follow the attachment’s duty-cycle instructions. Heat, foaming oil, a burning smell or repeated relief-valve operation indicates that the machine should be stopped and inspected rather than run at a higher setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to recognize a wrong setting
- Too little flow: a hydraulic motor turns slowly, a breaker has weak or irregular impact, a compactor takes too long to reach operating speed, or a tilt function moves sluggishly.
- Too much flow: a motor overspeeds, controls become difficult to modulate, oil temperature rises quickly, or the attachment produces unusual vibration and noise.
- Insufficient pressure: the tool reaches speed with no load but stalls when it meets soil, rock or material resistance.
- Excess pressure: hoses, seals, couplers or the attachment’s internal components may leak or fail; the relief valve may chatter or the machine may lose power.
- Interface problem: leaks at the quick-connect, restricted movement, pin stress or an attachment that does not sit squarely in the coupler can mimic a hydraulic-flow problem.
When a symptom appears, return to the manuals and verify flow, pressure, circuit type, coupler engagement and hose routing before changing the setting again. Do not use a higher setting to mask a mechanical or electrical fault.

Hydraulic breaker
Begin with the breaker’s specified flow and pressure, using the machine’s hammer or breaker profile when available. Bobcat places breakers in its maximum-flow examples, but “maximum” still means the upper end approved for that particular breaker and excavator. Confirm whether the breaker requires a one-way circuit, how return oil is routed and whether the manufacturer specifies a continuous impact limit.

Auger
Match flow to the auger motor and the soil or bit application. Bobcat lists augers among maximum-flow examples, yet an auger that is too small for the circuit can overspeed. If the auger stalls, check pressure, bit loading and hydraulic restrictions before increasing flow.
Compactor
Use the compactor’s specified upper flow range only when the excavator and attachment both allow it. Because compactors may operate continuously, confirm cooling capacity and temperature limits. A setting that works for a short test may still be unsuitable for sustained compaction.
Clamp
Bobcat describes medium flow as appropriate for its clamp attachment. Clamps generally need controllable cylinder movement rather than maximum oil volume, so start at medium or the attachment’s specified lower range and use proportional control for accurate placement.

PowerTilt or Hydra-Tilt swing accessory
Bobcat recommends low flow for precise control of these swing accessories. If movement is too slow, increase incrementally within the accessory’s documented range; maximum flow can make positioning abrupt and harder to control.
Why the “maximum” position is not a default setting
Maximum auxiliary flow can increase tool speed only when the attachment is designed for that volume and the excavator can dissipate the resulting heat. Sending excess oil through a small motor or restricted circuit wastes power and can raise temperature without improving useful work. It can also make a precision attachment harder to control.
The best setting is the lowest one that meets the attachment’s performance requirement under the actual load. This approach leaves more thermal margin, reduces unnecessary stress on hoses and seals, and makes it easier to diagnose a genuine fault.
Field checklist before putting the attachment to work
- Attachment model and manual identified.
- Required flow range and maximum pressure recorded.
- Excavator auxiliary circuit output verified for the selected mode.
- Low, medium or maximum setting mapped to an actual approved flow value.
- Coupler, pins, hoses, quick-connects and return path confirmed.
- One-way, two-way, case-drain and electrical-control requirements checked.
- Attachment weight, width and rated-capacity limits reviewed.
- Duty cycle and hydraulic-temperature limits understood.
- Initial test completed at low demand with no leaks, abnormal noise, overheating or instability.
Manufacturers publish model-specific settings and ranges, so the exact recommendation cannot be reduced to one gpm number for every compact excavator. When the excavator and attachment model numbers are known, their manuals provide the definitive setting and compatibility limits.
