Advance guide signs identify the exit and destinations before the split; exit-direction signs show the departing movement; arrows and lane markings identify the lane that serves it. If an overhead panel says EXIT ONLY, that lane drops from the mainline and must leave. If the lane is optional, it may serve either the exit or the through route. The striped triangle at the split is a gore: a neutral separation area, not an extra travel lane.
The explanations below follow the Federal Highway Administration’s U.S. freeway and expressway conventions. The sign guidance comes from the MUTCD 11th Edition Chapter 2E, published in December 2023. Marking examples come from the 2009 MUTCD Chapter 3B; states may have adopted later or different details.

How the interchange sign sequence works
A driver normally encounters several related signs rather than one instruction at the last moment. The messages should carry the same destination names through the approach, allowing you to confirm that you are following the intended route.
Advance guide signs come first
Advance guide signs appear before the diverging point. They name the exit, route, city, street, or other destination and provide time to choose a lane. On freeways and expressways, guide signs generally use white letters, symbols, arrows, and borders on a green background, subject to exceptions in the Manual. The exact size, placement, and number of signs depend on the interchange and available viewing distance.

Exit-direction signs show the movement
Closer to the split, an exit-direction sign clarifies where the departing movement goes. A diagonal or upward diagonal arrow on this sign represents the ramp movement. The sign may be overhead, roadside, or incorporated into a larger assembly. Read its destination and arrow together; the arrow is not a general instruction to every lane.
Exit numbers are orientation clues
Where a roadway uses numbered exits, the number is tied to the interchange’s reference location. It can appear on appropriate advance, exit-direction, and gore signs, helping drivers estimate position and report a location. Not every roadway uses numbered exits, so do not infer that an unnumbered interchange is missing information.
Legibility is part of the design
FHWA states in Chapter 2E: “Effective signs are legible to road users approaching them, and are readable and comprehensible in the viewing time provided to permit proper responses.” If a sign is blocked, damaged, or difficult to read, rely on the next sign and the lane markings rather than making a sudden maneuver.

Read arrows with the lane they serve
Arrows are lane-specific clues. On an overhead sign, a downward arrow generally points toward the lane below the arrow. When several arrows are arranged across a panel, each arrow should be aligned with its corresponding lane. A roadside arrow may apply to the lane beside the sign, but its position and the accompanying lane-use message still matter.
Downward arrows over lanes
A downward arrow over the right lane, for example, identifies that lane as the one associated with the destination shown above it. If the panel says EXIT ONLY, that alignment means the lane must leave the mainline. Do not read a downward arrow in isolation from the words, lane position, and pavement markings.

Diagonal arrows at the departure
An upward diagonal arrow on an exit-direction sign indicates the ramp’s departing movement. The point where the arrow appears relative to the gore and the diverging lane helps you understand which lane is peeling away. It does not by itself prove that every lane beside it must exit.
Split and optional-movement arrows
Some signs depict a split, multiple arrows, or an arrow that serves both a through destination and an exit. In those layouts, use the destination text, lane-use panel, and painted lines together. FHWA’s interpretation of a multi-lane optional-exit configuration demonstrates why the lane that can continue must be distinguished from a lane that drops; that example is configuration-specific, not a universal drawing for every interchange.

The most important distinction is whether the lane continues on the mainline.
| Layout | What the sign means | What happens to the lane | Driver response |
|---|---|---|---|
| EXIT ONLY lane drop | The indicated lane is dedicated to the exit. | It ends as a through lane and leaves via the ramp. | Move into a continuing lane early if you intend to stay on the highway. |
| Optional exit lane | The lane serves the exit and may also carry a through movement. | The lane can diverge or continue, depending on the marked layout. | Follow the arrow, destination, and lane line; do not assume the exit arrow means “must exit.” |
| Ordinary exit with an added auxiliary or deceleration lane | The exit is served by a lane added beside the continuing lanes. | The mainline through lanes continue while the auxiliary lane peels off. | Enter the exit lane when needed; through traffic remains in its continuing lanes. |
What EXIT ONLY means
EXIT ONLY is a warning that the indicated lane is ending as part of the mainline. The lane must leave through the displayed exit. This differs from an ordinary exit where a separate auxiliary or deceleration lane is added and the original through lanes continue. The EXIT ONLY panel is normally placed on an applicable overhead sign so the lane drop is clear before the split.
Can you stay on the highway from an exit lane?
Not when the lane is identified as EXIT ONLY. Once that lane drops, continuing straight from it is not an available movement. An optional lane is different: it may let you remain on the through route, but only if the arrows and pavement markings show that continuation. Check the full sign assembly before committing to the lane.

Lane markings approaching an interchange
White markings separate lanes moving in the same direction and organize the approach to the ramp. The following descriptions reflect the 2009 MUTCD Chapter 3B, a legacy edition reviewed for these examples; current state rules and installations can differ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNormal white lane lines
A broken white line normally separates adjacent lanes traveling in the same direction and permits lane changes when safe and legal. Near an interchange, that line may continue alongside a developing exit lane or change as the geometry changes. Look ahead for the next line pattern rather than reacting only to the nearest stripe.
Dotted or wide markings at a lane drop
Dotted or wider white markings can identify a lane-drop condition or distinguish an auxiliary lane from a continuing through lane. They alert drivers that the lane relationship is changing. The exact pattern varies with the design, so pair the marking with the overhead sign and arrow alignment.
Solid white lines
A solid white line may be used where lane changing is discouraged, including near a gore or a lane that is becoming exit-only. “Discouraged” does not have one identical legal meaning in every jurisdiction or circumstance. Do not treat a solid line as permission to make a last-second crossing; obey the applicable state law, signs, and safe-driving requirements.
What the striped triangle (gore) means
The gore is the area between the main roadway and the ramp just beyond the point where the ramp branches. Channelizing lines outline this neutral area and guide exiting vehicles into the ramp at the intended angle. White chevrons may be added to make the separation more conspicuous.

The gore is not a travel lane
The striped triangle is separation space, not a lane for passing, merging, or driving straight through. Enter the ramp before the gore expands; do not use the painted area as a shoulder or an escape lane. The MUTCD also describes an Exit Gore sign that marks the point where the exit departs.
Why the gore matters for lane choice
By the time your vehicle reaches the gore, the practical decision has usually been made. If your lane is exit-only, follow the ramp side of the channelizing lines. If you intend to continue, be in a lane that remains on the mainline before the separation area begins. A late move across the gore or its solid boundary creates conflict with vehicles already entering the ramp.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A step-by-step way to choose the correct lane
- Read the first advance sign. Note the destination, route, street, and any exit number. Estimate how much distance remains, but do not rely on the number alone.
- Confirm the destination on the next sign. Consistent wording through the sequence is your check that this is the intended interchange.
- Scan the overhead lane arrows. Match each downward arrow to the lane beneath it. Look for an EXIT ONLY panel or a message showing that a lane serves both movements.
- Check the pavement line beside your lane. A changing, dotted, wide, or solid line signals a developing lane relationship. Identify which lane continues before the gore is close.
- Make a normal lane change early. Signal, check mirrors and blind spots, and move only when a safe gap exists. Do not cross a gore or force traffic to accommodate a late decision.
- Recheck at the exit-direction sign. The diagonal arrow, destination, and ramp position should agree with the lane you selected.
- Follow the ramp markings. Once on the ramp, stay within its marked lane and watch for additional route or destination signs.
Common interchange layouts
| Feature to compare | Mandatory lane drop | Optional exit lane | Added auxiliary/deceleration lane |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mainline lane continues? | No; the indicated lane leaves. | Often yes, if the through arrow and line layout show continuation. | Yes; existing through lanes continue. |
| Typical sign clue | EXIT ONLY with an arrow over the dropping lane. | Arrows or destinations indicate both exit and through choices. | Exit-direction sign points to the added outside lane. |
| Where the gore appears | At the end of the lane that drops. | Where the optional lane separates or divides. | Between the continuing roadway and the added ramp lane. |
| Primary risk | Staying in the lane too long and discovering it cannot continue. | Assuming an exit arrow automatically means a mandatory exit. | Confusing the auxiliary lane with a through lane or changing across the gore. |
Interchanges can combine these features, including multi-lane exits and option lanes. Because a sign layout changes with the geometry, interpret the entire sequence rather than memorizing one picture.
Answers to common driver questions
Which lane do I need for a highway exit?
Use the lane identified by the exit destination and arrow on the advance or exit-direction sign. If the panel says EXIT ONLY, use that lane only if you intend to leave. If the sign presents an optional lane, verify whether the lane also has a through arrow or continuing pavement line.
What do arrows over the lanes mean?
They assign the sign’s destination or movement to the lane below each arrow. A downward arrow generally points to the lane beneath it; a diagonal arrow at the exit-direction sign shows the departing ramp movement. Always read the arrow with its text and position.

Can I cross a solid white line before an exit?
A solid white line commonly indicates that crossing is discouraged, especially where lanes are channelized near a split. Whether crossing is prohibited, and under what exceptions, depends on the applicable state rule and the particular marking. Plan the lane change before the solid line and follow local signs and the state driver handbook.
What if I miss the lane?
Continue on the roadway you are already in and use a later, legal turnaround or interchange. Do not stop, reverse, use the gore, or make a sudden crossing. A missed exit is safer to correct farther ahead than by entering a prohibited area.
National guidance and local rules
The MUTCD provides national guidance, but each state adopts and installs signs and markings through its own processes. A state’s current driver handbook and department of transportation information control location-specific questions, including the legal treatment of a solid white line, temporary construction markings, and unusual interchange layouts.
