When a battery-electric excavator, loader, forklift or other heavy machine uses all of its usable charge, battery-powered work is interrupted. The equipment may need a compatible charger or mobile power source before it can resume, leaving a task unfinished and potentially forcing a change in work sequencing. There is no single industry-wide warning, derating or shutdown sequence: follow the exact machine manual and contact the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or rental provider for its low-charge procedure.
The practical answer is to plan charging as part of the shift, not as an emergency afterthought. Runtime depends on the machine, duty cycle, load, heating or cooling, weather and charging access. A site without convenient grid power needs a documented mobile-power or backup-equipment plan before the machine arrives.

What an out-of-charge event does to the job
A machine with exhausted usable energy cannot continue battery-powered work. The immediate result can be a stopped lift, an unfinished excavation pass, a delayed loading operation or a crew waiting for energy to become available. Depending on the task, the supervisor may need to secure the machine, move it to a compatible charging point, bring in mobile power, switch to backup equipment or reprioritize work that does not require that machine.

Some equipment may display a low-state-of-charge warning, reduce available performance or stop propulsion before the battery is fully empty; other behavior depends on the control system and operating conditions. The evidence does not establish a universal sequence. Operators should use the model-specific low-charge and shutdown instructions rather than driving or lifting until the machine stops.

No published source provides a defensible universal number for downtime or the cost of an on-site depletion event. The delay depends on the battery state, charger capacity, electrical supply, travel distance to the charger, availability of another machine and the work that was interrupted.
How long can a heavy electric machine work?
United Rentals’ guide, published January 7, 2025, says OEMs typically estimate about four to six hours of daily use. That is a broad planning estimate, not a guaranteed runtime for a particular model, battery size or application. A machine doing intermittent light work may last longer than one performing continuous heavy-duty cycles.
| Runtime factor | Why it changes the result | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Duty cycle and load | Heavy-duty applications demand more energy than low-load or intermittent work. | Base the schedule on the actual task, not the machine’s headline specification. |
| Cab heating or cooling | Climate control adds electrical demand while the machine is operating. | Allow less productive runtime when heating or air conditioning will run continuously. |
| Cold ambient conditions | Cold weather can increase discharge and reduce the useful time available. | Use the OEM’s cold-weather guidance and avoid treating a warm-weather estimate as a winter guarantee. |
| Machine configuration | Attachments, travel requirements and other fitted systems alter energy consumption. | Plan with the exact machine and attachment combination scheduled for the job. |
Record actual state-of-charge readings at the start and end of representative shifts. That internal record is more useful for future scheduling than applying the four-to-six-hour estimate indiscriminately.

| Level 2 charging | Overnight charging or a long non-working period where suitable electrical service is available. | United Rentals reports a typical full-charge time of five to ten hours; actual time varies with the machine, charger, starting state of charge and accepted rate. |
| Opportunity top-off | A planned break, lunch period or shift change when the machine can be connected safely. | A short top-off may take 10–30 minutes. This is not a guaranteed full charge. |
| Level 3 charging | Large projects or multi-shift operations that need higher charging throughput. | Described by United Rentals as faster than Level 2, but no universal charge time applies across machines. |
| Generator or standalone battery | Sites without usable grid power, subject to the machine and charger’s electrical requirements. | These are jobsite-scale power sources; output, fuel or stored energy and connector compatibility must be confirmed before mobilization. |
| Mobile charging unit | Remote or off-grid work where transporting the machine to a fixed charger is impractical. | Volvo Construction Equipment describes its PU500 mobile charging unit, with availability limited to selected markets. |
Charging during breaks works only when the connection, access, supervision and electrical capacity have been arranged in advance. A nominal 20-minute break does not guarantee 20 minutes of useful charging if the machine must be moved, the charger is occupied or the equipment limits its charging rate.
Check machine and site compatibility before connecting
A charger that physically plugs in is not necessarily safe or acceptable. Confirm the following with the OEM, authorized service organization or rental provider for the exact model.
- Voltage and supply: verify the charger’s required voltage, phase and current against the site service, generator or mobile unit.
- Connector: confirm the approved connector and any equipment-specific inlet or adapter. Do not improvise an adapter because a plug appears similar.
- Battery and management system: confirm compatibility with the battery chemistry and battery-management controls. The management system may limit charging or require a communication handshake.
- Onboard or external charger: establish whether the machine contains an onboard charger or requires a dedicated external unit.
- Maximum accepted rate: a higher-capacity charger does not automatically make the machine charge faster; the machine may accept only a specified rate.
- Site electrical capacity: check available amperage, temporary distribution, cables, protection and whether other equipment will share the supply.
In a Volvo Construction Equipment FAQ created August 23, 2021 and edited July 21, 2026, the company discusses 240-volt NEMA 14-50 and J1772 connections for compact electric machines. That advice is specific to the equipment and context described there, not a universal specification for heavy construction equipment. See Volvo’s charging FAQ and obtain the exact requirement for your machine.

- Stop the task safely. Keep the load, attachment and machine in the position required by the manual. Prevent a sudden loss of propulsion, hydraulic function or stability from creating a hazard.
- Secure and isolate the equipment. Apply the specified parking, isolation and access controls. If the machine is damaged, overheated or behaving abnormally, keep it out of service and notify the responsible supervisor.
- Read the machine’s low-charge instruction. Record the displayed warning or fault code and follow the prescribed shutdown or recovery procedure. Do not bypass a protective control.
- Notify the charging coordinator. Report the machine location, state of charge, task affected and any warning shown. This lets the supervisor arrange a compatible charger or mobile power without sending an unsuitable unit.
- Choose the approved continuity option. Connect to the designated charger, deploy the planned generator or standalone battery, or use an approved mobile charging unit. If none is available, move to the documented backup machine or reprioritize work.
- Verify before returning to work. Confirm that charging has completed to the level required for the next task, no fault remains and the operator is authorized to resume. Record the event so the next shift can adjust its plan.
Forklift-specific safety requirements
Some of the clearest regulatory guidance concerns electric powered industrial trucks, not every type of construction machine. OSHA’s electric powered industrial truck guidance notes that heavy loads drain a forklift battery faster, requires trained personnel for charging or changing batteries and addresses precautions for charging areas. Apply those requirements to forklifts and follow the regulations and manufacturer instructions applicable to your equipment; do not present them as a complete excavator or loader procedure.
Bobcat’s forklift guidance recommends deciding in advance what to do for a low battery, charger fault or interrupted supply. Its examples include removing the truck from normal work, using backup equipment or reprioritizing tasks, reporting the problem, isolating damaged equipment and authorizing return to service. It also warns against an unapproved charger and against bypassing battery management. Treat this as manufacturer guidance for forklifts and substitute the exact procedure for the machine on your site.
Planning a site with little or no grid power
Classify the power environment
Before delivery, classify the work area as grid-connected, electrically constrained or off-grid. For a grid-connected site, identify the approved outlet, protection, cable route and charging window. For a constrained site, determine which other loads can run while the machine charges. For an off-grid site, specify the generator or standalone battery, its output and refueling or replenishment plan, or arrange an appropriate mobile charging unit.
Match charging windows to the work plan
Place full charging in the longest predictable idle period, often overnight. Reserve break-length top-offs for tasks where a partial increase in state of charge is useful. A multi-shift operation may require faster charging or additional machines rather than assuming one charger can serve every shift.

Define ownership and escalation
Name the person who checks state of charge, the person who controls electrical connections and the person who can authorize a backup machine. Keep the OEM or rental provider’s contact details with the daily equipment checklist. United Rentals’ guidance points toward full-service rental providers for assessing the machine, site and charging needs; use that kind of pre-job support when your team lacks electrical or fleet-planning expertise.
Verify regional availability
Mobile charging products and service support are not universally available. Volvo says its PU500 is offered in selected markets. Confirm availability, lead time, transport requirements and service coverage for the project’s location rather than planning around a product that cannot be supplied there.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common continuity problems
The charger will not start
Stop and check the machine’s displayed fault, connection status and the approved power source according to the manual. Confirm that the charger is the correct model and that the site supply is energized and within specification. Escalate to the OEM or rental provider if the fault persists. Do not substitute a generic charger or defeat a battery-management interlock.
There is no usable site power
Do not connect to an improvised outlet or an undersized portable power station. Use the preapproved generator, standalone battery or mobile charging unit, or move the work to a backup machine. If none is available, isolate the equipment and revise the task sequence until a safe source is arranged.

The battery is still too low after a break
A 10–30-minute opportunity connection is only a possible top-off. Check the machine’s accepted rate, starting state of charge and charger capacity, then decide whether the next task can be completed safely or whether a longer charge, different machine or changed work sequence is required.
The machine stops during a critical task
Secure the work area first, especially where a suspended load, excavation edge or traffic interface is involved. Follow the emergency and shutdown instructions for that model, report the event and use the site’s backup plan. Do not attempt to move a disabled machine in a way the manual prohibits.
What supervisors should put on the pre-start checklist
- Exact machine model, battery specification and approved charger identified.
- Expected duty cycle, loads, attachments and climate-control use documented.
- Starting state of charge and minimum reserve for the planned shift agreed.
- Overnight and break charging windows assigned, with a person responsible for connection and disconnection.
- Voltage, connector, communication requirements and site electrical capacity verified.
- Generator, standalone battery or mobile charger confirmed for off-grid work, including regional availability.
- Backup machine or reprioritized task list defined for a low-charge event.
- Operator training, charging-area controls and isolation procedure confirmed.
- OEM, rental provider and emergency contacts available to the crew.
- Method for recording warnings, charging interruptions and return-to-service authorization established.
Bottom line for site supervisors
Running out of charge does not create one predictable failure mode, but it does stop battery-powered production until an approved energy or operational alternative is available. Treat the four-to-six-hour figure as a broad OEM estimate, schedule overnight or opportunity charging around the real duty cycle, verify electrical compatibility and prepare off-grid or backup arrangements before work begins. The machine manual, trained personnel and the OEM or rental provider’s instructions take precedence over generic charging assumptions.
