The result depends on the transaction, the store’s transition instructions, the policy that applied to your purchase, and the seller or warrantor named in your documents.
Keep your order confirmation, receipt or invoice, proof of payment, warranty, service contract, and any acquisition notice. Then contact the store or buyer through an official current channel and request written answers about fulfillment, delivery, cancellation, refunds, returns, and warranty claims.

Why there is no single rule
“The store was acquired” describes a business event, not a universal customer remedy. The buyer may continue operating the same locations, change systems or contact details, transfer some customer records, or issue a transition policy. The acquisition announcement and any store-specific notice are therefore the first places to look for instructions about open transactions.

Your documents matter just as much. An order confirmation identifies what was sold and the expected fulfillment terms. A receipt or invoice helps establish the purchase date and seller. A written product warranty identifies the party that promised warranty service. A separately purchased protection plan or service contract may name an administrator with its own claim procedure.

Neither the fact of an acquisition nor a general statement that “everything is moving to the new company” answers every question. Ask about your particular order, purchase date, product, location, and document set.
Open orders: how to find out whether delivery will continue
An open order needs a fresh confirmation from the current operator. Do not assume that a paid order has been cancelled, and do not assume that the original delivery date, pickup store, or cancellation route remains unchanged.
Gather the transaction record
- Order number and order confirmation.
- Receipt, invoice, quote, or sales contract.
- Proof of payment, such as a card statement or other payment record.
- Product description, quantity, delivery address, and promised date.
- Any acquisition announcement or customer transition notice, including its date and revised contact details.
Ask for a written status update
- Use the store’s current official phone number, website contact form, or in-store service desk identified in the transition notice.
- Ask whether the order is still active and which legal or operating entity is fulfilling it.
- Confirm the expected delivery date, delivery company, pickup location, and whether any of those details have changed.
- Ask how to cancel if the revised timing or location no longer works, and how a refund would be issued.
- Request a case number or email confirmation and save it with your order records.
If the store says the order has moved to a new system, ask for the new order number and make sure the item, quantity, price, deposits, and delivery instructions match your original confirmation. If the business cannot locate the order, send copies of the confirmation and payment evidence through an official channel and keep a dated record of the submission.

What a government-contract rule does not prove
Federal rules concerning novation of government contracts address government procurement agreements. They do not create a blanket rule that every ordinary retail order automatically transfers to an acquiring building-supply retailer. A consumer order must be evaluated under its own documents, policy, transaction structure, and applicable law.
Returns for purchases made before the acquisition
A return is usually controlled by the policy and terms tied to the purchase, but the practical process may change after a store changes ownership. Identify the purchase date, proof of purchase, item condition, product category, original location, and the policy that was presented when you bought the item.

Questions to settle before taking the item back
- Which return policy applies to the purchase date and store location?
- What proof is accepted: receipt, invoice, order number, payment record, or another record?
- Is the item eligible, and must it be new, unused, unopened, or in resalable condition?
- What is the deadline, and does it run from purchase, shipment, delivery, or pickup?
- Must the item go to the original store, another location, a distribution center, or a manufacturer?
- Will the refund go to the original payment method, a replacement card, store credit, or another method?
Ask these questions in writing when possible. A verbal assurance that an exception will be made is harder to prove if the store later changes its position.
A retailer policy is an example, not a market-wide rule
Lowe’s current U.S. policy, accessed in 2026, illustrates why the exact retailer matters: many new, unused merchandise items can be returned or exchanged with a receipt within 90 days of the original purchase, subject to stated exceptions. That 90-day period is an example of one retailer’s policy, not a universal deadline, a legal requirement for every building-supply store, or proof that a newly acquired store will apply the same terms.
When a return deadline is close
Contact the current operator before the deadline and explain that the purchase predates the acquisition. Ask for a written confirmation of the applicable deadline and return location. If the store instructs you to wait for a system change, ask how that instruction affects the deadline and request a case number. Keep photographs of the item’s condition and packaging when condition could be disputed.
Product warranties and service contracts
The most important question is not simply whether the store changed owners. It is: who is the warrantor or service provider named in the written agreement?
Read the warranty and contract language
- A manufacturer’s limited warranty generally gives claim instructions for contacting the manufacturer or an authorized service channel.
- A retailer-backed warranty identifies the store or its operating entity as the party making the promise; the acquisition notice may explain whether the buyer is handling those claims.
- A separately purchased protection plan or service contract may be administered by a company different from both the store and the manufacturer.
Find the warranty period, exclusions, registration requirements, proof-of-purchase requirement, claim phone number or portal, and any repair, replacement, or refund remedy described in the document. Do not discard the packaging, serial-number label, installation record, or service invoices if the warranty instructions require them.

Contact the manufacturer as well when it is the named warrantor
The Federal Trade Commission’s warranty guidance says: “Save your product receipt with the warranty. The receipt proves the date you bought the product and that you’re the original product owner.” A store acquisition does not erase that proof. If the written warranty names the manufacturer, contact the manufacturer using the instructions in the warranty and tell the retailer, if necessary, that a claim is pending with the manufacturer.

Federal warranty rules concerning a seller that merely resells another party’s written warranty do not resolve every state-law claim or every promise made by an acquired retailer. The actual warranty, service contract, sales terms, and applicable jurisdiction determine what can be required in a particular dispute.
Who to contact after the ownership change
Start with the current official store or buyer channel named in the transition notice. Use the original seller’s contact details only if they are still confirmed as active. For a warranty, follow the named warrantor’s instructions rather than assuming the retail counter is still the correct destination.

When you call, write down the date, time, employee’s name or identifier, promises made, and case number. Afterward, send a short email summarizing what you were told and ask the recipient to correct anything inaccurate.
Documents to preserve
Make one digital folder and, if you retain paper records, one physical folder for the transaction. Preserve the original files rather than relying on a screenshot of a retail account that may disappear during a system migration.

- Order confirmation, quote, invoice, receipt, and delivery or pickup record.
- Card, bank, financing, deposit, or other payment evidence.
- Acquisition announcement and every customer transition message.
- Written product warranty, registration confirmation, and service contract.
- Serial numbers, model numbers, installation documents, photographs, and repair invoices.
- Emails, chat transcripts, letters, call notes, case numbers, and promised follow-up dates.
The FTC advises consumers dealing with a business problem to collect purchase documents before returning to the store or website. Its guidance states: “Before you go back to the store or website, learn about the company’s return policies and collect documents related to your purchase.”

Escalate in an orderly way
- Send a concise written request identifying the order or warranty, the outcome you want, and a reasonable response date.
- Attach copies, not irreplaceable originals, of the receipt, payment proof, warranty, and prior correspondence.
- Ask for escalation to a customer-relations or claims supervisor if the first contact cannot locate the transaction.
- Keep a dated log of every response and missed callback.
If the matter remains unresolved, consider contacting the consumer-protection office or attorney general in the relevant state. The FTC points consumers toward those state resources but says it does not resolve individual complaints. Available remedies and deadlines vary by jurisdiction, so a state office or qualified local lawyer is the appropriate source for advice about a specific legal claim.
How location changes the answer
The guidance above is centered on U.S. federal materials and a U.S. retailer policy example. A purchase made in Canada or another country may be governed by different consumer-protection statutes, warranty rules, language requirements, and limitation periods. Use the seller’s local terms and the applicable local consumer authority rather than importing a U.S. return example.
Even within the United States, the purchase state, delivery state, contract terms, product category, and payment method can affect rights and procedures. This general explanation cannot determine whether a specific acquisition transferred a particular obligation or violated a particular law.

“Will my order still arrive?”
It may, but the acquisition alone does not establish that. Obtain confirmation that the order is active, identify the fulfiller, and verify the delivery or pickup details in writing.

“Can I return something bought before the acquisition?”
Possibly. Ask which policy applies to the purchase date and location, whether the item qualifies, what proof is accepted, where it must be returned, and how the refund will be issued. Do not assume the buyer adopted the former policy or that a new policy automatically applies retroactively.
“Does my warranty still count?”
Read the written warranty and service contract. If the manufacturer is the named warrantor, use the manufacturer’s claim instructions. If the retailer made the promise, request written confirmation from the current operator about who is administering it.
“Who do I contact now?”
Use the current official contact channel in the acquisition or transition notice for orders and returns. Use the named manufacturer, retailer, or service-contract administrator for warranty claims, depending on the document.
“What paperwork should I keep?”
Keep the order confirmation, receipt or invoice, proof of payment, acquisition notice, written warranty, service contract, serial-number information, and a dated log of communications and case numbers.
