They will use Peach Pass electronic tolling, with prices that change as traffic conditions change. A driver will need an active Peach Pass account and transponder, or a valid interoperable toll pass, to enter. The general-purpose lanes will remain available at no toll. The SR 400 project documents do not establish a fixed opening date or permanent fare table, so drivers should rely on the price displayed at an entrance when the lanes open.
What the SR 400 Express Lanes are
Georgia Express Lanes are optional toll lanes built beside existing interstate or state-route lanes. Georgia.gov describes them as lanes that help drivers reach destinations more efficiently while leaving the regular lanes available. The SR 400 project applies that same managed-lane concept to the Georgia 400 corridor.

The project is being delivered as a public-private partnership involving the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the State Road and Tollway Authority (SRTA), and SR 400 Peach Partners, LLC. The partnership covers construction and future operation. The lanes are not a replacement for the existing roadway: drivers will still be able to use the general-purpose lanes without paying a toll.
What “managed” means
A managed lane is controlled through access rules and pricing rather than being open to every vehicle under identical conditions. The SR 400 lanes will use electronic tolling and variable prices to manage demand. The purpose of changing the price is to prevent the managed lanes from filling to the point that traffic slows substantially.

Project timing
The official SR 400 materials reviewed for this article do not give a confirmed opening date. They describe the planned design, access rules and operating approach, not a final date on which motorists can begin using the lanes. Once construction and commissioning are complete, the entrance signs and current project notices should be treated as the controlling information.
How tolls will be calculated
Dynamic pricing follows traffic demand
SR 400 tolls are planned to be “dynamically priced” through the existing Peach Pass system. SRTA will adjust the rate in response to traffic volume and congestion so that vehicles using the express lanes can maintain more reliable speeds. Prices generally rise when demand is high, such as a busy commute, and fall when demand is lower.
This means there is no single SR 400 price that applies every day or every trip. The amount shown on the entrance sign is the price information a driver should read before committing to the express lane. A quoted rate from one time of day should not be treated as a guaranteed peak, off-peak or permanent fare.

Georgia’s policy floors
SRTA and GDOT’s 2022 Georgia Express Lanes FAQ states that operational Georgia Express Lanes have a minimum rate of $0.10 per mile. The same policy describes a $0.50 minimum per trip during periods of very low demand. These are statewide operating-policy floors, not a published SR 400 rate schedule. They do not establish what a particular SR 400 entry or trip will cost when the facility opens.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
The distinction matters: a policy minimum limits how low a toll may go under the stated conditions, while the actual SR 400 charge will depend on the segment, direction, traffic conditions and displayed rate at the time of entry. The project documents reviewed do not provide a permanent table of SR 400 prices.
What the posted price tells you
Before entering, check the sign for the current toll information and make sure the price fits your trip. If you do not want to pay that amount, stay in the adjacent general-purpose lanes. Because the lanes are optional, there is no requirement to accept a dynamically changing toll.
Do you need a Peach Pass?
Yes. The SR 400 Express Lanes are planned as all-electronic toll facilities. A vehicle must have an active Peach Pass account and transponder, or a valid interoperable toll pass accepted by Georgia, before using the lanes.
Passes identified as interoperable
Peach Pass’s current FAQ says motorists with an active Peach Pass or a valid interoperable E-ZPass, SunPass, E-Pass or Quick Pass can access Georgia Express Lanes. The pass must be properly mounted or otherwise used according to its issuer’s instructions and associated with an account in good standing.

Obtaining Peach Pass equipment
Georgia.gov states that a Peach Pass account and transponder are required and that transponders are provided at no cost through the official program. “No cost” refers to the transponder supplied through that program; it does not mean trips are free. Tolls are charged to the account for eligible paid trips, while any applicable toll-free category must still meet its registration requirements.
Why an account matters
Electronic identification allows the system to record the vehicle’s use without cash booths. Before driving, verify that the account is active, the payment method is current and the transponder is in the correct vehicle. An account or pass that is inactive, unregistered or unreadable can create a toll-processing problem even when the vehicle itself is eligible.
Which vehicles can use the SR 400 lanes?
The SR 400 project FAQ specifies access for vehicles with two axles and up to six wheels, described there as class 6 vehicles. It separately prohibits freight vehicles and trailers. Registered transit buses and registered vanpools are permitted toll-free access.

|---|---|---|
| Two-axle vehicle with up to six wheels | Eligible to enter, subject to Peach Pass or an interoperable pass | Check the posted toll and use a properly registered account or pass. |
| Freight vehicle | Prohibited | Remain in the general-purpose lanes and follow applicable route restrictions. |
| Trailer, including a vehicle towing one | Prohibited | Do not enter the express lane; use the regular lanes. |
| Registered transit bus | Allowed toll-free | Maintain the registration required for the toll-free status. |
| Registered vanpool | Allowed toll-free | Ensure the vanpool is registered under the applicable program rules. |
| Carpool or other high-occupancy vehicle | No blanket SR 400 exemption is established in the project FAQ | Do not assume occupancy alone removes the toll; follow the SR 400 signs and current Peach Pass rules. |
Why you should not import rules from another corridor
Express-lane exemptions are facility-specific. Peach Pass materials describe different rules and exemptions on different corridors, and a carpool policy used on I-85 should not automatically be applied to SR 400. Unless the SR 400 signs or current official instructions say otherwise, treat the posted toll and SR 400 vehicle rules as controlling.

Are the express lanes mandatory?
No. The express lanes are optional. The existing general-purpose lanes remain the free alternative, so a driver can complete the trip without entering the priced facility.
| Decision factor | General-purpose lanes | SR 400 Express Lanes |
|---|---|---|
| Price | No express-lane toll | Dynamic toll shown before entry |
| Travel-time reliability | Can vary with congestion | Pricing is intended to protect more reliable speeds |
| Account requirement | No Peach Pass needed solely to use these lanes | Active Peach Pass or valid interoperable pass required |
| Vehicle eligibility | Use ordinary roadway rules | Two axles and up to six wheels; freight vehicles and trailers prohibited |
| Access | Follow normal roadway entrances and exits | Enter and leave only where the express-lane design and signs permit |
The practical choice is a trade-off: pay the displayed toll for access to a lane managed for speed reliability, or accept whatever congestion is present in the free lanes. Since SR 400 pricing is dynamic, compare the current sign, your schedule and your vehicle’s eligibility each time.

- Confirm your vehicle. Make sure it is a permitted two-axle vehicle with no trailer and is not a prohibited freight vehicle. If it is a transit bus or vanpool seeking toll-free treatment, confirm that the registration is current.
- Prepare the toll account. Activate a Peach Pass account and transponder, or verify that your E-ZPass, SunPass, E-Pass or Quick Pass is interoperable and active for Georgia Express Lanes.
- Check the entrance sign. Read the displayed price and any directional or access information before crossing into the express lane. Dynamic pricing means the amount can differ from an earlier trip.
- Choose the lane deliberately. Enter only if the posted toll and expected reliability justify the cost for this trip. If not, remain in the general-purpose lanes.
- Follow the lane markings. Use only designated entrances and exits. Do not cross solid markings or make an unsafe last-second maneuver to reach an entrance.
- Keep the transponder correctly installed. Follow the device issuer’s mounting instructions so the toll system can read it. Do not move a device between vehicles without updating the account or vehicle association as required.
- Review the account afterward. Check that the trip posted correctly and that the vehicle, pass and payment information remain accurate.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
Entering without a compatible pass
An ordinary license plate is not a substitute for the required Peach Pass or interoperable toll pass. If you realize before entry that the account is inactive or the device is missing, use the general-purpose lanes instead. If a trip has already been recorded, contact the toll-account provider promptly and follow its dispute or payment instructions rather than opening a second account for the same event.
Assuming the toll is fixed
A rate seen during one commute does not establish the rate for another. Dynamic pricing responds to demand, and the statewide $0.10-per-mile and $0.50-per-trip figures are minimum-policy references, not a promise that every SR 400 trip will be priced at those amounts.

- Clog resistant tip writes on dusty, wet and oily surfaces and is optimized for rough surfaces such as OSB, cinderblock and concrete

Assuming a carpool is automatically free
Do not transfer I-85 or another corridor’s high-occupancy exemption to SR 400. The SR 400 project materials specifically identify registered transit buses and registered vanpools as toll-free; they do not establish a blanket carpool exemption.
Taking a trailer or freight vehicle into the lane
Trailers and freight vehicles are prohibited under the SR 400 project rules. Plan the route in the general-purpose lanes before reaching the express-lane entrance, because reversing or changing lanes at the last moment is unsafe.
Missing the displayed rate
Drivers are responsible for reading the entrance information. If the sign is difficult to read because of weather, glare or traffic, slow only where lawful and safe, or remain in the free lanes until the next suitable decision point. Never stop in a live lane to study a sign.

What is known—and not yet fixed—about SR 400
The project’s operating model is established: Peach Pass electronic tolling, dynamic rates, optional use, eligibility for permitted two-axle vehicles and toll-free access for registered transit buses and vanpools. The reviewed official documents do not establish a final opening date, a permanent SR 400 rate table, a guaranteed travel-time saving or a specific traffic statistic. Those details should be taken from current project notices and the prices shown on entrance signs after the facility becomes operational.
Bottom line
SR 400 Express Lanes will be an optional, electronically tolled alternative to the free lanes. Keep a compatible toll pass active, read the dynamically changing price before entering, and use the general-purpose lanes if the toll, vehicle rules or account requirements do not fit your trip. The statewide policy floors of $0.10 per mile and $0.50 per trip during very low demand provide context, but they are not a fixed SR 400 fare.
