Read the advance guide sign, match its highway direction or destination to the lane arrow, and stay on that path through any curve, merge or weave. If you miss the turn, continue to a place where a legal reroute is available.
A service road is not governed by one nationwide layout or right-of-way rule. It may run alongside the highway, connect to frontage access, or lead to local streets, but its entrances, signals, speed limits and permitted movements depend on the specific jurisdiction. Posted controls and local law always take priority.

What a highway overpass actually is
The road structure you call an overpass is often part of a larger interchange. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) defines an interchange as “a system of interconnecting roadways providing for traffic movement between two or more highways that do not intersect at grade.” The bridge is only one visible element; ramps, loops, auxiliary lanes, collector roads and service roads may all be connected to it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because the highways are separated by grade, you cannot necessarily turn around or correct a wrong choice at the next block. Limited-access roads may have long distances between legal exits, and a ramp that looks like it should turn one way can lead to a different highway direction than expected. Treat the sign and pavement marking as the source of truth, not the apparent shape of the bridge.

Why interchanges are difficult to read
Several demands arrive at once: you must read a sign, identify a highway or destination, select a lane, control speed, steer through a curve and watch vehicles entering or leaving. FHWA’s driver-expectations report identifies ramps and merge/weave areas as particularly demanding because they combine route decisions with vehicle interaction.
Configurations are not predictable
An exit may be on the left or right. A lane may split, drop, become an auxiliary lane or continue onto another highway. Closely spaced ramps can require a decision before the next sign appears. High traffic volumes and multiple lane changes make it unsafe to wait until the physical split to decide.
The gore is a decision boundary
The gore is the painted, often triangular area separating a through lane from an exit or entrance lane. By the time you reach it, the available space for a lawful lane change may have disappeared. FHWA describes the unfamiliar-driver task as settling on a path before reaching this point.
Read the route in three layers
Use more than one cue. A destination name alone may not tell you which side of the interchange the ramp uses, while a lane arrow alone may not identify the highway you will join.
| Layer | What to look for | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Advance guide sign | Highway number, cardinal direction, destination, exit name or local street | Identify the movement you need before traffic becomes dense. |
| Lane assignment | Sign panel over a lane, downward arrow, or instruction such as “EXIT ONLY” | Move into the assigned lane gradually, leaving a buffer for other vehicles. |
| Pavement marking | White lane lines, directional arrows, dotted continuation lines and the gore | Confirm that your lane is still carrying the selected movement as the split approaches. |
The 2023 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), its current 11th Edition, says guide signs on multilane conventional-road approaches should indicate the direction of turn and/or the lane to use for ramp access. That is sign-design guidance, not permission to ignore a different posted control. State and local agencies may adopt amendments, so the signs and markings at the location govern your movement.

Step-by-step: approaching an unfamiliar interchange
- Set your destination early. Know the highway number, direction or named destination you need. If you are using a navigation device, treat its instruction as a planning aid and verify it against the roadway signs.
- Scan for the advance sign. Read it while maintaining your lane and speed. Do not brake sharply to finish reading; if necessary, continue and use a later legal route.
- Locate the assigned lane. Compare the sign panel with overhead or roadside arrows and the lane’s pavement markings. An exit-only lane may require an earlier merge than the physical ramp.
- Change lanes one at a time. Signal, check mirrors and blind spots, and leave enough distance for the vehicle already in the target lane. Avoid crossing multiple lanes in one movement near the split.
- Recheck after the move. Confirm that the next sign, arrow and lane line still match your intended highway or destination. If the cues conflict, obey the visible traffic control and do not improvise across the gore.
- Hold the chosen path through the split. Keep a steady, appropriate speed and look through the curve. Do not drift toward a neighboring lane while watching the bridge or scenery.
- Expect a new decision after the ramp. The ramp may lead to a merge, a second split, a toll or signal, or a service road. Continue reading signs rather than assuming the first turn completes the trip.
How to handle ramps, curves and merge areas
Curved ramps
A curved ramp reduces sight distance and leaves less time to respond to stopped or slow traffic. Reduce speed smoothly to the posted limit or the condition of the curve, keep both hands available for steering, and look toward the path you intend to follow. Avoid stopping on a live ramp except for an emergency or a direction from a traffic controller.
Entrance merges
At an entrance ramp, traffic already on the highway generally has the established travel lane, while entering drivers must find a safe gap and obey the local yield or merge control. Match the flow only as conditions allow; do not force a merge because the ramp is ending. Check for a lane that may be ending or becoming an auxiliary lane.

An exit lane can separate from the through lanes, or a through lane can become exit-only. Watch for solid white lines, “EXIT ONLY” panels and lane-drop arrows. Once a solid line or gore makes the movement clear, do not cross it simply to recover a missed choice.
Weaving sections
A weave is a section where entering and exiting traffic must cross paths over a short distance. FHWA’s complex-interchange work notes that short or missing weaving lanes, inadequate merging distance and unexpected lane reductions can affect operations and safety. Keep your scan moving between the lane ahead, mirrors and the next sign; avoid unnecessary lane changes until you are beyond the conflict area.
Using a service road or frontage road
“Service road,” “frontage road” and similar terms describe roads that run beside a highway, but the actual arrangement varies. One may be two-way with signalized intersections; another may be one-way, restricted to certain turns, or separated from the highway by barriers. A ramp may connect directly to it, or access may require a local street.

Before entering
- Read the sign for the service road’s name, direction and permitted destinations.
- Check whether the access is a ramp, a signalized intersection or a side street; each can have different yielding and lane-control requirements.
- Look for one-way arrows, turn prohibitions, truck restrictions, pedestrian crossings and posted speed limits.
- Confirm that the road leads toward your destination before committing. A parallel road can reverse direction or end without reconnecting to the highway.
While on the service road
Follow its signals and markings rather than assuming the highway’s rules continue unchanged. Watch for driveways, local intersections, buses, cyclists and pedestrians. If you need to re-enter the highway, plan for the entrance ramp and merge well before it ends; do not stop in a through lane to wait for a gap.
Why there is no universal service-road rule
The federal material used for interchange signing does not establish a nationwide right-of-way rule or access pattern for every service road. Whether traffic on the frontage road yields, has priority, or is controlled by a signal depends on the posted signs, pavement markings and state or local law at that location.
What to do if you are in the wrong lane
Do not swerve, reverse, stop abruptly or cross the gore. FHWA’s driver-expectation report found that people need enough distance between an advance sign and the final decision point to change lanes safely; it also found that drivers do not expect to cross more than one lane at the last moment. The practical safety response is to keep your lane, continue through the interchange and reroute at the next legal opportunity.
If the exit is still ahead
Signal and make a normal lane change only when there is a safe, legal gap and the lane markings permit it. If traffic does not provide that gap, stay on the through route. Missing one exit is safer than cutting across traffic.
If you have passed the gore
Remain on the ramp or roadway you entered. Follow its signs to the next exit, intersection or turnaround that is explicitly permitted. Never drive against traffic, use a shoulder as a travel lane, or make an unauthorized U-turn on a ramp.

If navigation instructions disagree with signs
Obey the roadway’s posted controls and continue safely. A navigation route can be outdated, unable to see a temporary closure, or based on a different entrance. Recalculate only after you have reached a safe place where operating the device is lawful.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you change lanes at the last minute?
Only if the lane change is legal and can be completed with normal signaling, mirror and blind-spot checks, and a safe gap. The painted gore, a solid lane line, an exit-only restriction or heavy traffic can make it unsafe or prohibited. “I need this exit” is not a reason to cross several lanes. Decide earlier, and accept a reroute when the decision point has passed.
Situations that require extra caution
Heavy traffic
Traffic can hide lane arrows and compress gaps. Increase following distance, keep your eyes ahead for brake lights, and avoid matching the speed of a vehicle beside you if it blocks your view of the sign.
Night, rain or glare
Wet pavement and glare can obscure arrows and lane lines. Reduce speed to maintain control, use headlights as required, and rely on the next visible sign rather than guessing from a partially visible marking.

Unexpected lane reductions
A lane may end sooner than expected because of a design constraint, incident or temporary control. Merge when the line and signs direct you, alternating cooperatively where appropriate, and do not use a shoulder or gore as a substitute lane.

Large or unfamiliar vehicles
Give buses, trucks and vehicles towing trailers additional room. Their blind spots and turning paths can obscure your lane or require them to track across a curve. Do not pass on a ramp simply to reach a decision point first.
A quick decision checklist
- Which highway number or named destination does the sign show?
- What direction—north, south, east, west or a signed route—is required?
- Which lane arrow or overhead panel assigns that movement?
- Does the path involve a ramp, a lane drop, a merge or a weave?
- Where is the gore, and have you completed the needed lane change before it?
- After the ramp, does the route continue on the highway or enter a service road?
- If the choice is no longer safe, where is the next legal place to reroute?
What the official guidance does—and does not—tell drivers
FHWA’s 2013 report Driver Expectations When Navigating Complex Interchanges supplies terminology and behavioral findings: unfamiliar drivers must interpret signs and markings, and grade-separated layouts make errors difficult to correct. FHWA’s 2018 complex-interchange work discusses lane-configuration concerns such as short weaving areas and inadequate merging distance. These are findings and design considerations, not a claim that every interchange has a defect.
The 2023 MUTCD provides current national sign guidance, while state and local agencies apply their own legal and engineering requirements. An FHWA ramp-management FAQ explains that agencies manage ramps with traffic-control devices; it does not create a driver entitlement to a particular merge or service-road movement. For an immediate decision, the sign, marking, signal and law at the roadway control.
The safest overall strategy
Plan before the split, confirm the lane with a sign and a marking, and keep your attention on the ramp and surrounding traffic through every curve or weave. Service roads require the same discipline but are more locally variable, so read their controls as a new roadway rather than an extension of the highway. When a decision is missed, continue calmly and take a later legal route instead of making an abrupt correction.
