It most closely refers to either the CII National EHS Excellence Awards 2025 or the Climate & Environment Stewardship category in the 21st CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2026. Both recognise organisational environmental performance, but they assess different things. The EHS awards examine management systems, legal and regulatory compliance, risk controls, and environment, health and safety results. The CII-ITC category focuses on environmental strategies and outcomes that reduce an organisation’s footprint and create long-term value.
Neither programme is an individual achievement award, and receiving one should not be described as a government finding or a substitute for regulatory compliance. The applicable track, eligibility rules, scoring and timetable depend on the named programme and edition.

What the CII environmental awards recognise
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) presents awards for exceptional organisational performance, innovation and leadership across areas including environment, health and safety (EHS), sustainability and green business. Its portfolio is intended for a broad range of organisations, from MSMEs and start-ups to large enterprises. The portfolio description is available on CII’s Awards & Recognition page.

Which programme does “CII Environmental Excellence Award” mean?
CII National EHS Excellence Awards 2025
The National EHS Excellence Awards 2025 invite Indian industries that demonstrate commitment to EHS excellence. Their framework combines three broad dimensions:
- EHS management systems: leadership commitment, employee participation and continual improvement.
- Compliance and risk management: statutory and regulatory requirements, risk assessment and operational controls.
- Performance: environmental, occupational-health and safety results.
This is therefore a whole-system award. Environmental results matter, but they are assessed alongside the way an organisation governs EHS and controls risk. A company with an impressive environmental project but weak systems or unresolved compliance controls would not be demonstrating the full scope of this award.
CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2026: Climate & Environment Stewardship
The separate 21st CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2026 includes a Climate & Environment Stewardship category. It recognises companies for environmental performance through strategies, policies and practices that minimise environmental footprint and create long-term value.

Its environmental lens can include the organisation’s strategy and policies, the way it manages its footprint and the value created over time. The published programme describes a six-month assessment involving desk assessment, site assessment, jury meetings and feedback to applicants.
Why the names should not be merged
“Environmental excellence” is a useful description, but it is not proof that two CII programmes have identical criteria. The National EHS awards explicitly combine environment with health, safety, compliance and risk management. The CII-ITC category is a sustainability award category centred on environmental footprint and long-term value. Use the formal programme name and edition when stating that an organisation has won or entered an award.
What the National EHS Excellence Awards assess
Management-system capability
The management-system dimension asks whether EHS is built into how the organisation is led and operated. The 2025 framework identifies leadership commitment, employee participation and continual improvement. In an application, that means showing more than a policy document: evidence should connect leadership decisions, worker involvement, corrective actions and measurable improvement over time.
Compliance, risk and operational controls
The framework also covers statutory and regulatory requirements, risk management and operational controls. These elements test whether the organisation knows its obligations, evaluates hazards and environmental aspects, and keeps controls working in day-to-day operations. Award assessment is not the same as a regulator’s determination of compliance; it is an assessment under the award’s published framework.
Environmental, health and safety performance
Results are assessed across environmental, health and safety performance. Environmental performance is consequently one part of an integrated EHS picture. Applicants should be prepared to connect reported results to the systems and controls that produced them, while keeping environmental, occupational-health and safety evidence distinct enough to be examined.
2025 EHS award tracks and edition-specific thresholds
The 2025 programme describes four tracks. The percentages below belong to that edition and should not be presented as permanent CII rules.
| Track | What it recognises | Published 2025 threshold or selection rule |
|---|---|---|
| Maturity Awards | Structured EHS systems, compliance and continuous improvement. | Gold: 90%; Silver: 85%; Bronze: 80%. |
| Mastery Awards | Beyond-compliance EHS excellence and integration of sustainability and business strategy into EHS culture. | 95% eligibility threshold. |
| Platinum | The highest honour, selected from top Mastery recipients. | Further presentation and site review; no separate percentage is stated. |
| MSME Awards | EHS practice suited to small and medium enterprises. | 75% eligibility threshold. |
The labels imply a progression in ambition, but they are not interchangeable. Maturity recognises a structured and improving system. Mastery adds beyond-compliance performance and links sustainability and business strategy to EHS culture. Platinum is a further selection from leading Mastery recipients, while the MSME track is designed for the circumstances of smaller and medium-sized organisations.
What the CII-ITC Climate & Environment Stewardship category recognises
Footprint reduction connected to strategy
The category recognises environmental performance through strategies, policies and practices that minimise environmental footprint and create long-term value. The emphasis is therefore on how environmental objectives are embedded in the company’s direction and operating model, not merely on a single installation or campaign.
A longer, multi-stage assessment
The 2026 programme describes a six-month process with desk assessment, site assessment, jury meetings and applicant feedback. It also describes more than 250 sustainability indicators. Those figures apply to the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2026 programme, not to the National EHS Excellence Awards.
Scale and historical participation figures
The CII-ITC programme page reports that more than 1,400 businesses applied and more than 500 businesses were recognised over 20 years. These are programme-wide historical figures supplied by the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development; they are not counts of applicants or winners for the National EHS Excellence Awards 2025.
Eligibility and assessment differences
Eligibility is edition-specific, so an organisation should read the current call for applications before relying on an older summary. The published 2025 EHS page says organisations operating in India for at least two years may participate under its stated organisation categories. The 2026 CII-ITC page states at least five years of operation in India and covers manufacturing or service entities.
| Comparison point | National EHS Excellence Awards 2025 | CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Primary scope | Integrated EHS management, compliance, risk and EHS performance. | Environmental sustainability, footprint reduction and long-term value. |
| Published operating-history rule | At least two years in India, under the stated organisation categories. | At least five years in India; manufacturing or service entities. |
| Assessment approach | Framework with track thresholds; Platinum adds presentation and site review. | Six-month process: desk assessment, site assessment, jury meetings and feedback. |
| Recognition structure | Maturity, Mastery, Platinum and MSME tracks. | Climate & Environment Stewardship as a sustainability-award category. |
| Indicator count or score figures | 2025 thresholds: 90%, 85%, 80%, 95% and 75%, according to track. | More than 250 sustainability indicators are described for the 2026 programme. |
“Not stated” is the correct description for any requirement that the relevant edition page does not publish. Do not transfer a threshold, fee, deadline or category from one programme to the other.
What applicants should be ready to demonstrate
The award pages do not turn every piece of evidence into a universal checklist, but their published scopes indicate the questions an applicant must be able to answer. Organise documentation around the programme you are entering:
- Name the programme and edition. Decide whether the application is for the National EHS Excellence Awards or the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards, then confirm the current rules on its official page.
- Map leadership and accountability. Show who sets EHS or environmental objectives, how responsibilities are assigned and how leaders review progress.
- Document participation and implementation. Demonstrate how employees participate, how procedures operate in the field and how training or communication supports them.
- Connect obligations to risk controls. Keep records showing applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, identified risks, operational controls and follow-up when controls fail.
- Present performance with context. Explain the environmental, health and safety results, the period measured and how the results relate to the systems or strategies used.
- Show improvement or value creation. For EHS Maturity, make continual improvement visible. For Mastery, show beyond-compliance practice and links between sustainability, business strategy and EHS culture. For Climate & Environment Stewardship, explain how strategies and practices reduce footprint and create long-term value.
- Prepare for verification. The 2025 Platinum route includes an additional presentation and site review, while the 2026 CII-ITC process includes a site assessment. Ensure that the evidence submitted can be matched to real operations.
What the award does not mean
- It is not an individual environmental-achievement medal. The programmes assess companies or other organisations and their systems, strategies and results.
- It is not a legal-compliance certificate. Award assessment does not replace permits, inspections, statutory filings, regulator decisions or other legal obligations.
- It is not proof that every site or project has identical performance. The recognised scope and assessment method depend on the application and programme rules.
- It is not evidence that a historical category remains current. Older descriptions can explain the evolution of CII’s EHS recognition but cannot establish today’s criteria.
Historical context: earlier CII EHS recognition
A CII Southern Region page for the 2010 EHS Excellence Award described the aim as motivating corporates to adopt innovative EHS practices. Its listed parameters included policy, statutory requirements, risk assessment, objectives and targets, performance monitoring, management focus, responsibilities, training and emergency response. This is useful background, not a current rulebook.
The Government of India’s India Science, Technology & Innovation portal record separately describes a CII Leadership and Excellence Award in Environment Health & Safety. It says the SHE award acknowledged CEO and team vision and commitment to environmental responsibility and occupational health and safety for employees and society. The record is marked under revision and updated through 2021, so it cannot determine the identity or criteria of a current programme.
How to state the recognition accurately
Use the exact award name, year and track. For example, a company recognised in the 2025 EHS programme should identify whether it received a Maturity, Mastery, Platinum or MSME recognition. A company recognised in the 2026 sustainability programme should identify the Climate & Environment Stewardship category rather than calling it an EHS award.

When describing the significance, link the claim to the assessed scope: “recognised for EHS management, compliance, risk management and performance under the CII National EHS Excellence Awards 2025” is materially different from “recognised for environmental strategies and footprint reduction in the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2026.” Avoid saying that the award proves legal compliance or guarantees performance outside the assessed organisation and edition.
Bottom line for readers
The CII environmental recognition most often meant by this question is organisational rather than personal. The National EHS Excellence Awards recognise the strength and results of an integrated EHS system, including leadership, participation, continual improvement, statutory compliance, risk management and environmental, health and safety performance. The separate CII-ITC Climate & Environment Stewardship category recognises environmental strategies, policies and practices that reduce footprint and create long-term value. Confirm the formal programme, edition and current eligibility rules before making a claim about what an award represents.
