What Does the Amazon Echo Yellow Ring Mean? How to Clear It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A yellow or slowly pulsing yellow light on an Amazon Echo usually means Alexa has a pending notification, message, or possibly a missed reminder. It is generally a notification indicator—not a Wi-Fi or hardware fault.

Start by saying “Alexa, what are my notifications?” and then “Alexa, what are my messages?” Amazon recommends checking both because notifications and messages are separate categories.

What the yellow Echo light means

On Echo speakers, Amazon describes a slow yellow burst or pulsing yellow ring as an indication that a message or notification is waiting. A missed reminder can also cause the yellow light. The exact alert depends on your device, Alexa account, region, and enabled features, so yellow does not identify one specific service by itself.

Amazon’s official light guidance identifies yellow as a notification indicator. It does not normally mean that Alexa is broken or disconnected. See Amazon’s Echo light-color guide.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Charcoal
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
  • Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Clear it with these voice commands

  1. Say “Alexa, what are my notifications?”
  2. Then say “Alexa, what are my messages?”
  3. If necessary, ask “Alexa, what does your light mean?”

Reviewing notifications may clear the light, but asking about messages separately matters: Amazon’s troubleshooting instructions treat messages and notifications as different categories. Also check whether Alexa reports a missed or overdue reminder.

For the official troubleshooting sequence, see Amazon’s guidance for a flashing yellow light.

Echo speaker ring versus Echo Show light bar

The indicator looks different across Echo families:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Echo speakers: a slow yellow pulse or burst around the ring.
  • Echo Show devices: a solid yellow light bar, rather than a ring. It has the same general meaning: a message or notification is waiting. See Amazon’s Echo Show indicator explanation.
  • Newer Alexa+ models: Amazon’s documentation for the Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio 2025 releases describes yellow as a pending or unread notification. Do not assume every Echo model uses exactly the same visual behavior; see the model-specific Amazon guidance.

How to turn off unwanted notifications

If you want to stop a particular category from creating alerts, use the current general path in the Alexa app:

  • Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.

  • Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
  • Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Select Notifications.
  5. Choose the relevant feature or service.
  6. Turn its notification setting on or off.

Amazon notes that app labels and screens can vary by country, account, device, and app version. The documented path is described in Amazon’s notification-settings instructions.

Disable announcements on one Echo

If the alert is related to announcements or Alexa communications, you can change the setting for a particular Echo rather than disabling notifications everywhere:

Rank #4
Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Deep Sea Blue
  1. Open the Alexa app and select Devices.
  2. Select All Devices.
  3. Choose the Echo device.
  4. Open Settings.
  5. Select Communications.
  6. Select Announcements.
  7. Turn Announcements on or off.

Amazon also documents a related path through Devices → Echo & Alexa → your device → Settings → Communication, where available. Be careful: disabling communications can affect more than the alert currently lighting the Echo. See Amazon’s Announcements instructions and its communications settings guidance.

What to do if the yellow light stays on

If Alexa says there are no notifications, work through these checks:

Best Value
Amazon Echo Spot (newest model), Great for nightstands, offices and kitchens, Smart alarm clock, Designed for Alexa+, Black
  • MEET ECHO SPOT - A sleek smart alarm clock with Alexa and big vibrant sound. Ready to help you wake up, wind down, and so much more.
  • CUSTOMIZABLE SMART CLOCK - See time, weather, and song titles at a glance, control smart home devices, and more. Personalize your display with your favorite clock face and fun colors.
  • BIG VIBRANT SOUND - Enjoy rich sound with clear vocals and deep bass. Just ask Alexa to play music, podcasts, and audiobooks. See song titles and touch to control your music.
  • EASE INTO THE DAY - Set up an Alexa routine that gently wakes you with music and gradual light. Glance at the time, check reminders, or ask Alexa for weather updates.
  • KEEP YOUR HOME COMFORTABLE - Control compatible smart home devices. Just ask Alexa to turn on lights or touch the screen to dim. Create routines that use motion detection to turn down the thermostat as you head out or open the blinds when you walk into a room.
  1. Ask about messages as well as notifications.
  2. Check for a missed or overdue reminder.
  3. Open More → Settings → Notifications in the Alexa app and review each relevant category.
  4. Check the specific Echo’s Communications and Announcements settings.
  5. Confirm that you are checking the Echo that is actually showing the light. In a home with several devices, the pending alert may be associated with a different Echo.
  6. Remember that more than one notification category may be pending; clearing one alert may not clear the others.

Available notification categories can vary by account, region, linked services, and device. Do not assume that a yellow light specifically means a delivery, shopping alert, calendar event, or third-party service unless you can identify that category in Alexa.

Yellow compared with other Echo light colors

Light General meaning
Yellow Pending notification, message, or possibly a missed reminder
Red Microphone or camera disabled
Orange Setup mode or an attempt to connect to the internet
Green Call or Drop In activity
Purple Do Not Disturb or certain setup and error conditions
Blue and cyan Alexa is listening, processing, or responding
White Volume adjustment

These colors are general indicators, and the exact behavior can vary by Echo model. Amazon’s Alexa light-ring documentation provides the color terminology and meanings.

Does Do Not Disturb remove the yellow light?

Not normally. Do Not Disturb is associated with purple behavior in Amazon’s indicator documentation and is intended to suppress or change interruptions. It is not the same as reading or clearing a pending yellow notification. To address the yellow light, review the notification, message, reminder, or notification setting that is causing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is yellow a sign that Alexa is recording?

Amazon identifies yellow as a notification indicator. Its guidance uses blue or cyan behavior for listening, processing, or responding. Therefore, a yellow ring should be interpreted as a pending alert rather than as the indicator Amazon assigns to listening.

Should you reset the Echo?

Resetting or deregistering the Echo is not the appropriate first step for a yellow notification light. Start with the two voice commands, check reminders, and review the Alexa app’s notification and communication settings. Factory-resetting the device can remove its configuration without addressing the notification source.
