There is no universal runtime for electric construction equipment. A machine’s battery capacity is only one input. Excavation force, travel, hydraulics, attachment use, operator technique, temperature, ground conditions, utilization, and charging access can move actual shift time far above or below a headline figure. Treat every hour claim as a model-specific estimate with stated conditions, then match the machine, charger and site electrical supply before committing to a work plan.
The practical question is not simply “How many kilowatt-hours does it have?” It is whether the machine can complete the planned duty cycle, whether a suitable charge can be delivered during available breaks, and whether the jobsite can provide the required voltage, phase, current and connector.

What determines an electric machine’s runtime?
Runtime is the period a machine can perform a particular work cycle before it reaches the manufacturer’s charging limit. It is not a laboratory constant and should not be transferred from one machine class to another. Manufacturers qualify their figures by utilization, application or operator usage. Caterpillar, for example, describes several machines as operating for “up to” eight hours while stating that use and application affect the result (Caterpillar’s battery-electric machine specifications).
Work cycle and utilization
A mini excavator digging continuously at high hydraulic load consumes energy differently from one placing light material, idling between trucks or traveling short distances. Wheel loaders can spend a large share of a shift traveling, loading, waiting or reversing. “Typical utilization” therefore matters as much as the battery rating. Caterpillar’s 301.9 electric mini excavator claim of up to eight hours is tied to a stated typical utilization range of 40–60%, not eight hours of uninterrupted maximum output.

Operator and site conditions
Driving style, attachment selection, tire pressure, slope, loose ground, ambient temperature and battery temperature all affect consumption. Wacker Neuson explicitly says WL300e runtime depends on application, task and driving style, while charging time depends on infrastructure, charging power, connector, ambient temperature and battery condition or temperature (WL300e technical data). Plan with a realistic operating margin rather than scheduling work to the last percentage point.
Usable energy versus nameplate capacity
A specification such as 32 kWh or 387 kWh identifies the battery system’s stated capacity; it does not tell you exactly how much energy the operator can use. Battery-management limits protect the cells, and charging losses mean energy drawn from the supply is greater than energy stored. Ask the manufacturer whether a quoted capacity is nominal or usable and which state-of-charge (SOC) window underlies its runtime and charging figures.

How to compare charging times correctly
Charging time is a three-part specification: the starting SOC, the target SOC and the complete charger/power-source arrangement. A “full charge” from 10% to 100% is not comparable with a 20–80% estimate, and an onboard AC charger is not equivalent to a higher-power DC unit.
Read the SOC endpoints first
Volvo lists 6 hours 45 minutes for the L25 Electric from 10% to 100% using its 4.6 kW standard AC onboard charger. The same machine is listed at 2 hours 25 minutes from 20% to 80% with 9.6 kW DC offboard charging, or 1 hour 20 minutes from 20% to 80% with 17.3 kW DC offboard charging. The shorter DC estimates are not “the time to fill the battery” and should not be used as such.
Account for battery size and supply voltage
A Yanmar V8e technical review presents separate estimates for its 39.9 kWh and 53.2 kWh batteries. From 20% to 80%, the table gives approximately 9 and 12 hours from 230 V, 16 A with an 11 kW onboard charger; approximately 3 and 4 hours from 400 V, 16 A; and approximately 1.5 and 2 hours with the 22 kW option at 400 V, 32 A. The discussion also describes roughly 1.5 hours from 20–80% for fast onboard charging, but the table’s voltage, current, charger and battery conditions remain the controlling details (Yanmar V8e technical review).
Yanmar’s product page separately lists approximately 3.1 hours for the 39.9 kWh battery and 4.2 hours for the 53.2 kWh battery on a V-cycle, depending on application and operator usage (Yanmar V8e product page). Those are operating-cycle estimates, not a replacement for the SOC-specific charging table.

Distinguish onboard, offboard, AC, DC and tethered operation
- Onboard AC: The charger is carried by the machine. It is convenient where only an AC supply is available, but power can be limited.
- Offboard DC: A separate charger supplies higher direct-current power when the machine and connector support it. It can make a break-time charge practical, but requires suitable equipment and site capacity.
- Tethered: A machine such as the Caterpillar 395 can operate continuously while connected through an energy distribution skid. That removes battery-runtime limits during the connection but introduces cable routing, protection and grid-capacity requirements.
Kubota describes an optional supercharger for its RT210-2e/RT220-2e compact loader family that can recharge on a 400 V supply in 90 minutes. The claim applies to that option and machine family, not to electric equipment generally (Kubota electric compact wheel loader article).
What electrical supply does a jobsite need?
Before delivery, verify the machine’s required voltage, phase, current, connector and charger rating with the manufacturer or dealer. The examples span low-power single-phase overnight charging, three-phase AC, high-power DC and a 1,000 V three-phase tethered system.
Site-readiness checklist
- Identify the exact machine model, model year, battery option and regional configuration.
- Confirm whether charging is onboard AC, offboard DC or a tethered connection.
- Record required voltage, phase, maximum current, connector and charger power.
- Have a qualified electrician verify service capacity, distribution equipment, protection, grounding and cable routing.
- Check whether other site loads—welders, compressors, lighting, pumps or temporary offices—will operate during charging.
- Plan physical placement: charger access, weather exposure, traffic separation, cable protection and emergency isolation.
- Confirm the supply available at the actual jobsite, not only at the yard or depot.
For orientation, the 301.9’s listed 3 kW AC overnight option is a very different site requirement from the 950 GC’s maximum 290 kW mid-shift charge. The Caterpillar 906 lists both 6 kW maximum single-phase and 18 kW maximum three-phase AC options, while the 395 calls for 1,000 V three-phase grid supply. These figures demonstrate why a generic “EV charger” assumption is unsafe. Caterpillar’s machine page identifies the relevant charging configurations (Cat Battery Electric Machines).
A practical method for planning a shift
- Define the duty cycle. Break the shift into digging, lifting, traveling, waiting, attachment work and idle periods. Note load, gradients, ground conditions and expected utilization.
- Select a conservative energy estimate. Use the manufacturer’s claim that most closely matches the application, then reserve energy for weather, delays and repositioning. Do not use an “up to” figure as a guaranteed minimum.
- Set the charging window. Decide whether the machine can charge overnight, during lunch or between work periods. Specify the desired starting and target SOC.
- Match the charger to that window. Compare the required energy, charger power and realistic site supply. A high-power DC option may reduce downtime but can require service upgrades or temporary power equipment.
- Validate the installation. Obtain the connector and electrical requirements for the exact regional machine configuration and have the site installation checked before mobilization.
- Monitor the first shifts. Record SOC at start and finish, hours in each activity, charger energy and ambient conditions. Use those observations to refine the fleet plan without presenting them as a universal specification.
Mid-shift charging and fleet scheduling
A mid-shift charge can be part of a full working-day plan, but only when the machine and charger support it. Caterpillar’s 906 claim explicitly includes a mid-shift charge, and the 950 GC claim specifies a 45-minute charge at a maximum 290 kW. Liebherr describes one hour at 150 kW DC between work periods extending the R 920 G8-E’s operating time to 10 hours. These are different machines with different power systems; the figures cannot be combined into a general rule.

For multiple machines, stagger charging so the site’s peak demand stays within the service limit. A fleet schedule should show each machine’s planned SOC, charger, start and finish time, and whether another load may interrupt charging. Keep a contingency plan—an available spare machine, a second charging location or a revised task sequence—for weather, access delays and charger faults.

Using battery size as a runtime promise
Two machines with similar kWh ratings can have different hydraulic systems, masses, duty cycles and control strategies. Compare the manufacturer’s application and utilization assumptions, not just capacity.
Comparing unlike charging claims
Always write the endpoints beside the time: for example, “20–80% at 17.3 kW DC.” Mixing 10–100%, 20–80%, different battery options or different charger powers produces a misleading ranking.

Assuming a consumer EV cable or adapter will fit
Construction equipment uses model-specific connectors, communication systems and protection requirements. Do not connect a machine to a consumer cable, adapter, replacement battery or portable charger unless the equipment manufacturer explicitly approves that combination.

Ignoring temperature and infrastructure
Cold batteries, hot enclosures, undersized cables and limited transformer capacity can slow charging or prevent the advertised power level. Include ambient conditions and battery condition in the commissioning plan.
Treating product pages as permanent specifications
Options, connectors, model years and regional availability can change. Reconfirm the current configuration with the manufacturer or dealer before purchase, rental or mobilization. Volvo’s charging guidance also emphasizes matching the machine and charging setup to the project’s operating pattern (Volvo CE charging questions and answers).
What the published figures do—and do not—tell you about cost
Battery capacity, runtime and charger power do not by themselves establish a fuel or operating-cost saving. A valid comparison would need the same duty cycle, energy and fuel prices, charging losses, demand charges, maintenance assumptions, utilization and financing period. The available machine specifications do not provide a comparable cross-machine cost calculation, so procurement decisions should use your own measured duty cycle and local electricity tariff.
