Options include bricklaying, carpentry, electrical and plumbing work, civil engineering, surveying, quantity surveying, planning, site supervision, project coordination and office or site-based roles. In England, paid apprenticeships, foundation apprenticeships, college courses, entry-level jobs and higher or degree apprenticeships all provide possible starting points. The right route depends on the work setting you prefer, the qualification level you need and the requirements of the specific vacancy or course.

Building services and specialist systems
Building-services work covers electrical installation and other specialist systems that make buildings safe, comfortable and usable. Some employers work with newer technologies and energy-related systems, but you should read the actual apprenticeship standard or vacancy rather than assume every electrical or building-services role has the same content. Specialist work can involve fault-finding, testing, commissioning, maintenance and compliance records as well as installation.
Engineering and technical roles
Civil engineers help plan and deliver infrastructure such as roads, bridges, drainage and foundations. Their work can combine calculations, drawings, materials, site inspections, safety controls and coordination with contractors.
Building technicians and technical support staff interpret drawings, check dimensions, support design or production teams, prepare information for site use and help solve practical problems. These roles suit people who like mathematics, technical drawing, digital tools and understanding how materials behave.

A common progression is from a trade, building-technician or surveying-assistant role into a supervisory position, followed by additional training and experience. There is no single mandatory starting occupation: the employer, project type and management standard determine what is expected.
Office-based and mixed roles
Construction companies also employ people in estimating, procurement, administration, design support, customer liaison, document control, scheduling and commercial functions. Many jobs combine office planning with visits to sites. If you prefer active site work, office work or a mixture, use that preference to narrow your search instead of assuming construction means one type of day.

How school leavers can enter construction in England
Paid apprenticeships
As GOV.UK explains, “Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study.” In England, an apprentice is an employee: the role includes wages and holiday pay, with at least 20% of normal working hours allocated to training or study. The general conditions are that you are aged 16 or over, live in England and are not in full-time education. A pupil can apply while still at school, but must meet the age condition by the stated start point.
Apprenticeships range from level 2 to levels 6 and 7 and can last from eight months to six years, depending on the occupation and level. Always check the individual vacancy for GCSE, functional-skills, driving, medical, travel or other requirements; there is no universal entry profile for every construction apprenticeship.
Foundation apprenticeships
England’s foundation apprenticeships are level 2 entry routes intended to help eligible young people start in an industry. Official guidance says no specific qualifications or experience are required. Eligibility is generally for people aged 16 to 21, with specified circumstances extending it to some 22-to-24-year-olds. Availability is local and occupation-specific, so confirm that a construction opportunity exists and that you meet the current rules.
College or technical study
A construction, engineering or built-environment course can prepare you for a trainee job, an apprenticeship or higher education. Courses may teach practical skills, drawing, measurement, materials, health and safety or digital design. Entry grades, equipment and progression arrangements depend on the provider; one college’s requirements are not a national rule. Ask how the course connects to employers and what work experience is included.
Entry-level employment
Some employers recruit people into junior roles and teach them on the job. A labourer, trainee technician, stores assistant or surveying assistant position can help you understand site routines, develop reliability and identify a specialism. Ask what formal training, supervision and progression the employer provides rather than assuming that any job will lead to a qualification.

Higher and degree apprenticeships
Higher and degree apprenticeships can suit school leavers who want engineering, surveying, supervision or management work while earning a wage. They combine employment with study at higher-education levels. Compare them with college and university routes, checking the employer’s required subjects, grades, selection process, travel expectations and the qualification awarded. Level equivalences are broad guides; the specific standard controls the programme.

Women into Home Building
CITB’s Women into Home Building programme is designed to attract women into site-based home-building management, an area it describes as historically underrepresented. It offers structured site-management work experience, career advice and exposure to home-building roles, with a pathway into employment. CITB reported that more than 230 women had received support, advice and exposure since the programme launched; that is a programme-reach figure, not a measure of women’s representation across the whole industry or a promise of a job.
Participation is funded by participating employers. Confirm current intakes, geographic availability, eligibility and participating employers before applying, because these details can change. The programme covers a specific home-building management pathway and does not replace apprenticeships or other routes into trades, engineering, surveying or construction offices.
Other awareness and experience initiatives
CITB information also refers to Onsite Experience Hubs, SkillBuild and Go Construct as initiatives intended to raise awareness or support entry. The available information does not establish a single current, nationwide women-only intake through those initiatives, so check the current offer rather than assuming one exists in your area.

Assess an employer, not just a job title
Before accepting a role, ask who supervises trainees, how safety concerns are reported, what facilities and personal protective equipment are provided, how progression is assessed and whether the hours and travel are realistic. A supportive employer should be able to explain the training plan and the standards used to judge competence. These questions matter to every applicant, while helping women identify workplaces that take inclusion and professional development seriously.

A practical application plan for a school leaver
- Choose a work pattern. Decide whether you want active site work, workshop or building-services work, office work or a mix. Note whether heights, outdoor conditions, travel or early starts are acceptable.
- Shortlist career families. Compare two or three occupations using the daily tasks, strengths and progression in the table above. Read several real vacancies so you can see how titles differ between employers.
- Check the exact requirements. Record the stated age, location, qualification, driving, travel, health-and-safety and work-authorisation conditions for each vacancy or course. Do not transfer requirements from one occupation to another.
- Build evidence of reliability. School projects, part-time work, volunteering, practical hobbies, caring responsibilities and team activities can demonstrate attendance, planning, safe working and communication. Explain what you did and what you learned.
- Get informed exposure. Use an employer open day, work-experience placement, college visit or recognised construction-awareness initiative to see the work before committing. Ask what a normal day and first year look like.
- Apply through the appropriate route. Submit applications for apprenticeships, foundation opportunities, entry-level jobs and courses separately. Tailor your statement to the occupation instead of sending one generic application.
- Prepare for selection. Practise explaining why the role interests you, how you follow instructions, how you respond to a safety concern and how you solve a practical problem. Take certificates and questions about training to the interview.
- Plan travel and equipment. Construction sites can be dispersed and starts can be early. Confirm transport, site access, clothing and any employer-provided PPE before your first day; do not buy specialist equipment until the employer or college specifies it.
Progression after the first role
Progression is usually built from competence, reliable experience and additional training. A trade apprentice may become a specialist, chargehand or supervisor. A building technician may move into technical coordination or engineering study. A surveying assistant may progress to surveying or quantity surveying. People entering through office roles can develop into planners, estimators, project coordinators or commercial managers.
Moving into site management normally requires evidence that you can coordinate people and work safely, not simply a new job title. Employers may support further qualifications while you gain responsibility. Keep records of completed training, site experience, responsibilities and feedback so you can show how your capability has developed.
What the labour market figures do—and do not—tell you
CITB’s 2026 Construction Workforce Outlook forecasts that the UK will need an average of 41,200 additional workers each year from 2026 to 2030 to support activity and replace departures. It forecasts a UK construction workforce of 2,681,800 in 2030. Both figures are forecasts: they vary by occupation, nation and region and are not guaranteed vacancy counts for a particular trade or town.
An ONS release in 2026 reported 1.4 million construction-related employees in Great Britain in 2024, excluding self-employment. It also reported continuing skilled-labour shortages and vacancies above pre-pandemic levels. This is an observed, broad employment measure with a different scope from CITB’s forecast, and neither figure is women-specific.
Local demand can differ sharply. Check vacancies and training provision in the area where you can work, and treat national outlook figures as context rather than a promise of employment.
Important differences across the UK
The apprenticeship conditions above are England-specific. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland operate different apprenticeship systems, funding arrangements and eligibility rules. If you live or plan to work outside England, use the relevant nation’s official guidance and the employer’s vacancy details. Do not assume that the 20% training rule, foundation-apprenticeship eligibility or programme names apply unchanged across the UK.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming construction means only manual labour: investigate technical, commercial, planning and management roles as well.
- Treating a forecast as a job offer: confirm an actual vacancy, its location and its requirements.
- Using one course’s entry grades as a national rule: check each provider.
- Applying England’s rules elsewhere in the UK: use nation-specific guidance.
- Expecting one women-only programme to cover the industry: Women into Home Building is a particular site-management support route.
- Buying equipment before checking the specification: employers and colleges may provide or mandate different items.
- Ignoring travel and site conditions: confirm start times, transport, outdoor work, heights and accommodation requirements before accepting an offer.
Bottom line for women and school leavers
Construction offers a choice between practical trades, specialist building services, engineering and technical work, surveying and commercial careers, site management and office or mixed roles. In England, paid apprenticeships and foundation routes can provide an early start, while college, entry-level employment and higher or degree apprenticeships open other paths. Compare the work itself, verify the exact vacancy or course requirements and investigate the current Women into Home Building offer if site management interests you. The industry outlook indicates continuing demand, but the opportunity you can take depends on occupation, employer, location and the rules that apply where you live.
