What CADR, HEPA, and ACH Mean When Shopping for an Air Purifier

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CADR, HEPA, and ACH describe different parts of an air purifier’s performance. CADR measures how much particle-cleaned air the complete machine delivers. HEPA describes the capture efficiency of a filter. ACH expresses how often that delivered clean air equals the volume of your room. Use smoke CADR and the actual room volume to size a unit; then check operating noise, energy use, gas-filter media, placement, and replacement-filter requirements.

What the three ratings mean

CADR: the clean-air output of the whole machine

Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) is a volume-of-air measurement. It indicates how much air the complete purifier delivers after removing particles, normally expressed in cubic feet per minute (cfm). Because the rating includes the fan, filter, housing, and airflow path, CADR is a whole-unit performance measure rather than a statement about filter material alone.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Common CADR figures cover tobacco smoke, dust, and pollen. Smoke represents the smallest particle category in that group. If your priority is fine particulate matter such as PM2.5 or wildfire smoke, the smoke CADR is the most useful figure to compare. A larger CADR generally means faster particle removal and the ability to serve a larger room, provided the rating is measured under comparable conditions.

HEPA: filter capture efficiency

HEPA means high-efficiency particulate air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes HEPA as a pleated mechanical filter that can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of particles measuring 0.3 microns, the most penetrating particle size for this type of filtration. That is a filter-capture specification, not a room-size or airflow rating.

  • FIND COMFORT: Our filter has strong filtration performance of fine particles. 99.97% filtration efficiency for 0.1 to 0.3μm airborne particulates, including pollen, dust, and animal dander allergens. Tested by an independent lab

A purifier can contain a HEPA filter yet have a modest CADR if its fan moves little air. Conversely, a high-airflow appliance still needs an effective, well-sealed filter path to capture particles. The HEPA percentage does not establish the purifier’s noise, energy use, gas removal, or delivered clean air in your room.

ACH: clean air relative to room volume

Air changes per hour (ACH) compares clean-air flow with the volume of the room. The CDC and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health give this formula:

ACH = (Q × 60) ÷ room volume

Here, Q is airflow in cubic feet per minute and room volume is in cubic feet. For example, with 80 cfm in a room measuring 12 feet by 10 feet by 10 feet, ACH is (80 × 60) ÷ 1,200 = 4.0.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ACH is a rate comparison, not a claim that every molecule is replaced uniformly every hour. Air mixing, furniture, doors, leakage, and the purifier’s location affect actual concentrations. A manufacturer’s ACH number is meaningful only when its airflow, room dimensions, and fan speed are disclosed.

How CADR, HEPA, and ACH fit together

Think of the terms as three different questions:

  • CADR: How much particle-cleaned air does this complete unit deliver?
  • HEPA: How efficiently does the stated filter capture particles under its test definition?
  • ACH: How does that clean-air flow compare with the volume of my room?

They cannot be substituted for one another. A HEPA label does not tell you whether the fan can clean a large room. An ACH claim cannot be interpreted without the room size used to calculate it. CADR does not rate removal of gases or odors.

Size a purifier by room volume and CADR

Use the EPA’s eight-foot-ceiling estimates

The U.S. EPA’s general estimation table assumes an eight-foot ceiling and gives these minimum CADR values for particle removal:

Room area Minimum CADR Assumption
100 sq. ft. 65 cfm Eight-foot ceiling
200 sq. ft. 130 cfm Eight-foot ceiling
300 sq. ft. 195 cfm Eight-foot ceiling
400 sq. ft. 260 cfm Eight-foot ceiling
500 sq. ft. 325 cfm Eight-foot ceiling
600 sq. ft. 390 cfm Eight-foot ceiling

These are estimates, not guarantees for every pollutant or room condition. Start with the space the purifier must actually serve, then compare the relevant CADR at the operating speed you can tolerate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adjust for high ceilings and open layouts

A square-foot label usually assumes an eight-foot ceiling. A 400-square-foot room with a 12-foot ceiling contains 50% more air than the same floor area with an eight-foot ceiling, so it requires more delivered clean air to reach the same ACH. If the manufacturer does not provide a higher-ceiling rating, calculate the room volume and compare it with the purifier’s stated airflow.

For an open floor plan, include the full connected area rather than treating one corner as a separate room. Open doors, stairwells, and unusually high ceilings increase the volume that the purifier must influence. If the space can be closed off, sizing each occupied zone separately may be more practical.

Wildfire smoke and fine particles

For wildfire smoke, the EPA advises choosing a tobacco-smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet. A 120-square-foot room therefore calls for a smoke CADR of at least 80 cfm. This is wildfire-smoke guidance, not a promise that all pollutants or room conditions will be handled identically.

Smoke CADR is especially useful because it represents the smallest particle class among the common CADR ratings. Do not replace it with a dust or pollen number when fine-particle performance is your main concern.

Calculate ACH yourself when the inputs are available

  1. Measure the room’s length, width, and ceiling height in feet.
  2. Multiply those dimensions to obtain cubic feet.
  3. Find the purifier’s airflow in cfm at the fan speed you plan to use.
  4. Multiply cfm by 60 and divide by room volume.

For example, a 15-by-12-by-8-foot room has 1,440 cubic feet. A purifier delivering 200 cfm at the selected speed would produce (200 × 60) ÷ 1,440, or about 8.3 ACH. If the advertised ACH was calculated for a smaller room or a higher fan speed, your result will be lower in actual use.

What to compare on product specifications

Comparison point Why it matters What to verify
Smoke CADR Best common CADR indicator for fine particles Value, test basis, and fan speed
Room area and ceiling height Determines the air volume to be cleaned Whether the stated area assumes an eight-foot ceiling
ACH Relates clean-air flow to your room Room dimensions, airflow, and operating speed used
HEPA claim Describes filter particle capture Whether the claim applies to the filter or the complete appliance
Noise Determines whether you will run the required speed Sound level at the CADR-producing setting, not only the quiet mode
Energy performance Affects continuous operating cost ENERGY STAR status and published power information
Gas-filter media Needed for odors and some gases Activated-carbon amount or other media and supporting evidence
Replacement filters Maintains airflow and filtration over time Exact compatible model number, availability, price, and replacement interval

Check whether the CADR is independently verified

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) says its AHAM Verifide seal identifies tested CADR and suggested room-size information. Verification helps you compare a manufacturer’s claim with a standardized test result, but you still need to check the room assumptions and the speed at which the rating is achieved.

Account for the speed you will really use

EPA notes that CADR values are typically measured at the cleaner’s highest speed. Higher fan speeds and longer run times generally increase filtration, but the loudest setting may be unacceptable in a bedroom, classroom, office, or occupied construction area. A technically adequate purifier that is routinely left on low may deliver less clean air than its headline CADR suggests. Compare noise at the speed required for your room, and consider whether an automatic mode changes fan speed as conditions change.

CADR and HEPA do not measure gases or odors

CADR is a particle rating. It does not tell you how well a purifier removes volatile organic compounds, combustion gases, or persistent odors. EPA recommends an activated-carbon or other gas-targeted filter when gases matter and notes that activated carbon can be effective when a large amount of material is used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Portable air cleaners do not have a broadly used, standardized gas-removal rating comparable to particle CADR. Treat vague claims such as “odor control” as incomplete unless the manufacturer identifies the media, quantity, target gases, and test conditions. HEPA alone should not be presented as a gas filter.

Energy use, ozone, and certification

Energy efficiency is a separate question

ENERGY STAR certification concerns energy performance, not HEPA status. The current room-air-cleaner specification became effective October 9, 2025, and uses an Integrated Energy Factor that relates CADR to power consumption. A purifier can be HEPA, energy efficient, both, or neither, so check each attribute separately.

Review ozone information

ENERGY STAR certification criteria include an ozone limit and require CADR, power, and filter information. Certification does not mean a product is HEPA, and a HEPA label does not by itself answer questions about ozone emissions. Avoid assuming that an air-cleaner marketing claim represents an EPA endorsement; EPA states that it does not endorse manufacturer claims about the degree to which a specific product will produce healthier indoor air.

Installation and daily operation

  1. Place the unit where air can move. Follow the manual and keep intake and exhaust openings clear of curtains, furniture, stored materials, and walls that block the airflow path.
  2. Use the correct room assumption. If the purifier is moved to a larger or taller space, recalculate the volume instead of carrying over the former ACH.
  3. Select a sustainable speed. Use the higher setting when rapid particle reduction is needed, then choose a quieter setting only if its resulting CADR still suits the room.
  4. Keep doors and windows in mind. Frequent opening can introduce outdoor particles and change the effective air volume. A portable purifier is not a substitute for source control or ventilation decisions.
  5. Schedule filter checks. Inspect and replace filters according to the model’s instructions. A dirty or overloaded filter restricts airflow and will not work well.
  6. Confirm the replacement part before buying. Match the exact purifier model number; filters that look similar may not seal or fit correctly.

Limits you should expect from any purifier

Air-cleaner ratings describe performance under test conditions, not every condition in a lived-in building. A purifier cannot capture pollutants before they reach the filter, cannot guarantee uniform concentration throughout a room, and cannot remove every category of contaminant with one filter type. Construction dust, sanding debris, combustion products, and chemical vapors may require source control, local exhaust, containment, or other measures in addition to portable filtration.

“No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.”

— U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home

Use CADR and ACH to judge delivered particle-cleaning capacity, HEPA to understand the filter’s particle-capture claim, and separate evidence for gases, ozone, noise, energy, and maintenance. That combination gives a more realistic picture than any single badge or number.

A practical shopping checklist

  • Measure the actual floor area and ceiling height.
  • For fine particles or wildfire smoke, compare tobacco-smoke CADR first.
  • Check whether the listed room size assumes an eight-foot ceiling.
  • Calculate ACH from the stated cfm and your room volume when possible.
  • Confirm whether “HEPA” refers to the filter element or a tested whole-unit claim.
  • Find noise data at the speed associated with the published CADR.
  • Check energy performance independently of HEPA labeling.
  • If gases or odors matter, look for substantial activated carbon or another specified gas-targeted medium.
  • Verify airflow clearance and the exact replacement-filter model before purchase.
  • Plan for regular filter replacement and do not treat any rating as a guarantee of healthier indoor air.
