It is a sculptural group of translucent polycarbonate canopies surrounding the entry and exit escalators of the Disney CLEO Parking Structure in Anaheim, California. Kingspan Light + Air identifies the installed system as U-Lite, with the parking structure completed in 2019 and providing 6,500 spaces.
The canopies perform a straightforward enclosure job—sheltering guests from sun and rain—while their repeated, playful forms create a forest-like arrival and departure space. The result is an architectural landmark at a circulation point that could otherwise feel purely utilitarian.

What visitors are seeing
The canopy composition sits at the parking structure’s entry and exit escalators. Those escalators connect the large parking facility with the pedestrian routes used by guests, so the canopy zone is encountered during the transition between vehicle parking and the open-air resort environment.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRather than one continuous roof, the installation reads as a collection of translucent elements. Kingspan Light + Air calls it a “garden” of canopies, while Building Enclosure describes a forest-like façade at the escalators. Both descriptions point to the same design strategy: many related canopy forms produce a recognizable composition without turning the escalator entrance into a solid, opaque building wall.

The system is architectural rather than decorative scenery. Its translucent polycarbonate surfaces admit daylight beneath the covers, and the shelter is positioned where guests wait, walk and change levels. The visual effect is therefore tied to circulation, weather protection and orientation—not just to an isolated art object.

How the canopy installation serves guests
Sun and rain protection
The most direct benefit is a covered path at the escalators. Building Enclosure says the canopies protect guests from sun and rain while retaining a bright, welcoming space underneath. That combination matters at an outdoor parking facility: a roof that blocks weather but eliminates daylight can create a dark threshold, while an uncovered escalator entrance exposes people to conditions during the busiest part of their journey.

Translucent polycarbonate allows light to pass through the canopy surfaces. In this project, the daylight objective is stated as part of the design description, not as a published illumination test. No measured light levels, transmission percentage or nighttime lighting study is provided in the available project accounts. The defensible conclusion is that the forms were selected to shelter the escalators while maintaining natural light below them.
A clearer arrival and departure point
Parking structures can be visually repetitive. A group of distinctive canopy forms gives the escalator zone a marker that guests can recognize when entering or leaving the structure. The “garden” metaphor also gives the place a memorable identity without claiming that planted landscape is part of the canopy system itself.

Why the design is described as a “garden”
The word “garden” describes composition, not horticulture. The manufacturer uses it to characterize a set of related translucent forms arranged around the escalators. Building Enclosure uses a forest analogy for the façade. Neither source documents trees, planting beds or a botanical installation as part of the canopy work.
These metaphors help explain the visual intent. A single large canopy would read as conventional infrastructure. Repeated elements can vary in position, overlap and silhouette, making the approach feel more like a small landscape of structures. Polycarbonate’s translucency reinforces that reading: light reaches the space between and beneath the forms, rather than stopping at an opaque ceiling.

The playful quality is also practical from a wayfinding perspective. A recognizable overhead composition can distinguish the escalator entrances from the surrounding parking decks, especially for visitors returning to a large facility after several hours away. The sources do not report visitor wayfinding tests, so this is an architectural interpretation of the documented design intent rather than a measured performance claim.
Who designed and delivered the project
Architect
Pacific Architectural Concepts is credited as the architect in Building Enclosure’s June 26, 2023 project article. That credit applies to the Disney CLEO Parking Structure canopy project as described in the article.
Canopy manufacturer and system
Kingspan Light + Air identifies its U-Lite polycarbonate canopy system as the feature installed around the entry and exit escalators. The U-Lite name identifies the commercial system used for this project; it should not be treated as proof that every translucent canopy product has the same engineering properties.

Contractor
The manufacturer’s case study lists Bomel Construction Inc. as contractor. The available descriptions do not provide a detailed subcontractor list, erection sequence or shop-drawing responsibility matrix.
What the published accounts establish—and what they do not
Project summaries are useful for identifying the concept and participants, but they are not a complete construction record. The following boundaries are important if the canopies are being used as a precedent for another project.
Established by the project descriptions
- The installation is at the Disney CLEO Parking Structure in Anaheim, California.
- The parking structure was completed in 2019 and is described as having 6,500 spaces.
- U-Lite polycarbonate canopies are located around the entry and exit escalators.
- The stated goals include weather protection, natural daylight and a welcoming guest environment.
- Pacific Architectural Concepts is credited as architect, and Bomel Construction Inc. is listed as contractor.
- The design is characterized as playful, garden-like or forest-like.
Not published for the installed units
- Exact canopy dimensions, module spacing and total covered area.
- The structural support configuration, connection details and foundation arrangement.
- Panel tint, thickness, coatings or light-transmission values.
- Fire rating, wind design criteria, seismic design information or other code calculations.
- Thermal performance, acoustic performance or measured daylight levels.
- Cleaning intervals, inspection procedures, replacement history or current maintenance condition.
- Whether the exact U-Lite configuration remains available as a current product option.
Those omissions are not evidence of a deficiency. They simply mean that a contractor or design team would need project-specific drawings, specifications and manufacturer documentation before using the installation as a technical model.
Construction lessons from the canopy concept
Coordinate enclosure with circulation first
The canopies are placed over escalator approaches, where vertical clearances, pedestrian movement, drainage and equipment access all intersect. On a comparable project, the enclosure concept should be coordinated with the circulation layout before the canopy geometry is finalized. The Disney descriptions establish the location at the escalators, but they do not publish the clearances or coordination drawings.
Use translucency as a controlled design decision
Translucency is not the same as unrestricted transparency. It can diffuse daylight and conceal some visual clutter while preserving a bright space. The appropriate panel specification depends on the project’s structural, fire, weathering and lighting requirements. The Disney case study does not publish those values, so they cannot be inferred from photographs or from the U-Lite name alone.

Make repetition do visual work
A family of canopy elements can provide a stronger identity than one oversized roof. Repetition also creates opportunities to tune the composition to pedestrian routes and building edges. The trade-off is coordination: each additional form can affect support points, drainage paths, access for cleaning and replacement planning. None of those installation details is documented publicly for the Disney structure.
Keep performance claims tied to evidence
The documented performance objective is shelter from sun and rain while allowing daylight below. It is not a published laboratory comparison with glass, fabric or metal roofing. A new project should therefore establish its own criteria for weather resistance, daylight, fire safety, wind and seismic loads, durability and maintenance rather than borrowing assumptions from this precedent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to understand the project’s scale
The 6,500-space figure describes the parking structure, not the number of canopies or the area covered by them. It helps explain why a relatively concentrated escalator entrance needs a strong visual identity: the structure serves a very large parking program, while the canopy group marks a much smaller pedestrian threshold.
Building Enclosure also says Disneyland welcomes “over fifty-one thousand visitors daily,” but the article supplies no underlying citation for that number. It should not be presented as an independently verified or current official attendance statistic. The documented 6,500-space capacity is the more useful project scale figure for understanding the parking facility itself.
What the canopies are—and are not
They are a built canopy composition
The installation is a group of translucent polycarbonate covers associated with the Disney CLEO Parking Structure’s escalator entrances and exits. Its purpose combines enclosure and visual identity.

They are not a separate Disneyland attraction
The available project descriptions do not identify the canopies as a ride, show, garden attraction or independently ticketed feature. They are part of the parking structure environment.
They are not a published product specification
Seeing U-Lite named in the project description does not reveal the exact panel build-up, support system or code approvals used at the site. Those details belong in the project’s construction documents and manufacturer submittals, not in a general visitor explanation.
Why this precedent matters to construction teams
The Disney CLEO canopies show how a modest area of enclosure can carry a large share of a project’s public identity. The escalators need shelter regardless of the visual concept; the design turns that necessary infrastructure into a memorable threshold.
For owners and architects, the precedent suggests a useful sequence of questions:
- Which pedestrian locations need reliable protection from sun and rain?
- Where would daylight materially improve comfort or orientation?
- Can repeated canopy forms reinforce wayfinding without obstructing sightlines?
- What structural, drainage, fire and maintenance requirements must be resolved before form-making begins?
- Which claims can be verified through calculations, testing and specifications rather than appearance?
That sequence keeps the architectural ambition connected to constructability. A “garden” of forms can be expressive, but each form still has to shed water, resist local loads, connect to its supports and remain serviceable over time. The Disney case study confirms the design goals and participants; it does not replace the technical documentation required for another site.
