What a “New Angle” on Brick Wall Construction Must Get Right

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The specific construction method behind Building Design + Construction’s “A new angle on brick wall construction” cannot be verified from the available records. A similarly titled item in the Brick Development Association’s Brick Bulletin (Summer 2000) is associated in its contents with the Geffrye Museum Extension, but that resemblance does not establish that it is the same article, project or technique.

What can be stated confidently is how any genuinely new brick-wall approach should be judged: by its structural role, moisture control, material compatibility, constructability, code compliance and documented performance. The Brick Industry Association’s technical notes provide the practical baseline for making that assessment.

What is actually known about the “new angle”?

The title points to a Building Design + Construction item, but the article itself has not been identified in the records available for this topic. That leaves its date, author, location, project, wall system and claimed benefits unresolved. No reliable evidence establishes whether “new angle” refers to a structural arrangement, a prefabricated panel, a masonry technique, a restoration detail, a change in installation sequence or an architectural treatment.

A search result for “A new angle on brickwork” in the Brick Development Association’s Brick Bulletin Summer 2000 lists the Geffrye Museum Extension in its contents. That is a potentially useful lead, not proof of identity. The museum project, its construction method and any performance claims must not be assigned to the Building Design + Construction title without the original publication.

Consequently, there is no defensible basis for presenting one particular system as the method described by that headline. The useful answer for a designer, contractor or owner is a framework for evaluating the unknown proposal against established masonry requirements.

Why a brick wall cannot be judged by its bricks alone

Brickwork performance comes from the complete wall assembly and the way it is built. The Brick Industry Association’s technical notes emphasize that specifications alone cannot predict results: design, detailing and workmanship are equally important. A wall that uses an appropriate brick can still leak, crack or lose support if its joints, flashings, anchors or movement details are wrong.

Project conditions determine what “appropriate” means. Exposure to wind-driven rain, freeze-thaw cycles, salts, pollutants and temperature movement varies by location. Occupancy and interior humidity also affect risk. A sheltered interior partition has a different brief from an exposed veneer on a tall building. Any proposed innovation therefore needs a stated geography, exposure category, building use and wall assembly before its advantages can be evaluated.

Material selection: start with exposure and compatibility

Choose brick for the actual exterior conditions

Brick units should be selected for the exposure they will experience, not simply for appearance or nominal strength. The specification should identify the unit characteristics required for the project and confirm that the selected product is suitable for the intended exterior environment. A local masonry supplier can help purchasers source the correct grade, size and quantity, but the design professional remains responsible for matching the unit to the project requirements.

Match mortar to the brick

Mortar materials and mortar type must be compatible with the selected brick. The technical guidance recommends using a mortar no stronger than necessary to satisfy the project requirements. An excessively strong mortar can be less forgiving than the brick during movement or weathering, transferring stress into the units or concentrating cracking at interfaces. Mortar selection should therefore follow the wall’s exposure, structural role and unit properties rather than a blanket preference for the highest strength.

Specify the whole set of embedded materials

Ties, anchors, flashings and other embedded components are part of the moisture and support strategy. The guidance calls for corrosion-resistant ties and anchors, durable flashing compatible with the surrounding materials, and water-resistant barriers where the veneer assembly requires them. These decisions must be checked against current codes, the project specification and the manufacturer’s installation requirements.

How moisture control is supposed to work

A brick veneer is not automatically watertight. Brick and mortar can absorb water, so a reliable assembly manages water that reaches the back of the veneer and provides a path for drainage and drying.

Water-resistant barriers

Where a veneer assembly calls for a water-resistant barrier, it should be continuous and correctly integrated with openings, corners, shelf angles and other penetrations. The barrier is part of the wall’s secondary defense; it does not excuse defects in flashing or joints.

Flashings

Flashing must be durable, compatible with adjacent materials and detailed so that collected water is directed toward the exterior. Joints, end dams, laps and transitions at openings are common failure points. A “new” system should show exactly how its flashing is supported and connected, not merely state that flashing is included.

Open head-joint weeps

The technical notes specifically recommend open head-joint weeps where they are required for the veneer assembly. These openings allow water collected at the base of a drainage cavity or over an opening to escape. They must remain open after tooling, sealant work and cleaning; blocked weeps defeat the drainage path.

Support details that are often confused

Component Function Design question
Shelf angle Supports brick veneer and is anchored to the structure. Where is the veneer transferred to the structure, and how are movement and corrosion addressed?
Lintel Spans an opening and carries loads through support from masonry at each side. How is the opening load transferred into the jambs, and how are bearing, deflection and movement handled?
Ties and anchors Connect the veneer or masonry to the supporting structure while allowing the intended relative movement. Are the materials corrosion-resistant, correctly spaced and compatible with the barrier and cavity?
Flashing and weeps Collect and discharge water from vulnerable ledges, openings and cavity bases. Is there a continuous drainage route to the exterior, and can it be inspected and kept clear?

A shelf angle is not a lintel. Treating one as the other can produce an incorrect load path or an unworkable movement detail. Drawings for any unusual wall should identify each component and its separate role.

A practical method for evaluating an unfamiliar wall system

  1. Define the wall’s role. State whether the brick is load-bearing, a veneer, an infill or a finish attached to another structure. Identify the supports, openings, floor lines and movement joints.
  2. Record project conditions. Document location, wind-driven-rain exposure, freeze-thaw risk, building use, interior humidity and the height or complexity that affects access and tolerances.
  3. Trace the load path. Follow gravity and lateral loads from the brick units through beds, lintels, shelf angles, ties, anchors and the primary structure. Check bearing lengths, deflection limits and interfaces at every opening.
  4. Trace the water path. Starting at the exterior face, identify where water can enter, where it is collected, how it drains and how the assembly dries. Show barriers, flashings, end dams, laps and open weeps on the details.
  5. Check material compatibility. Compare brick properties with mortar type, joint tooling, ties, anchors, flashing and sealants. Confirm that corrosion, staining, movement and differential absorption have been considered.
  6. Review constructability. Ask how installers will maintain cavity width, keep weeps open, place ties, support flashings, sequence lifts and protect unfinished work from rain or freezing. A detail that cannot be built consistently is not an improvement.
  7. Verify code and project requirements. Have the design team check current local codes, structural provisions, fire and acoustical requirements, energy details and any specification clauses that govern the assembly.
  8. Demand evidence for claimed benefits. Separate a drawing-level concept from measured performance. Look for a named project, defined test conditions, inspection records or post-occupancy evidence rather than an unqualified assertion of better speed, strength or water resistance.

Where a new approach could provide value

Without the missing Building Design + Construction article, no particular benefit can be credited to its “new angle.” In general, a proposed change is worth considering only when it solves a defined project problem without creating a larger risk.

  • Structural efficiency: the system may reduce unsupported spans or clarify how veneer loads reach the structure, provided calculations and movement limits support the claim.
  • Moisture robustness: revised cavity, flashing or weep details may improve drainage, but only if continuity is maintained through corners and openings.
  • Construction sequencing: prefabrication or a different support sequence may shorten work at height, yet tolerances and field connections must remain achievable.
  • Material economy: fewer components can reduce cost, but eliminating a tie, flashing or movement provision without an engineered substitute can increase failure risk.
  • Architectural flexibility: unusual angles, bonds or projections may create a desired appearance, while still requiring positive support and drainage at every change in plane.

Common failure modes and what they indicate

Cracking at openings or support points

Cracks near lintels, shelf angles and corners can indicate inadequate movement accommodation, excessive deflection, incompatible mortar or an unclear load path. Map the cracks, inspect the support and review the original design before patching joints or replacing units.

Water appearing below windows or at floor lines

This often points to discontinuous flashing, missing end dams, blocked weeps or an incorrectly integrated barrier. Opening a small area for inspection may be necessary to determine whether the defect is local or repeated throughout the elevation.

Efflorescence and staining

Visible salts or rust-colored marks can result from water movement, soluble materials or corrosion of embedded components. Cleaning the face without correcting the source can make the symptom recur and may damage the brick or mortar.

Loose or displaced veneer

Displacement requires prompt assessment of ties, anchors, shelf angles, corrosion and substrate movement. It should not be treated as a cosmetic repointing job until the support system has been verified.

What documentation a credible “new” method should include

A useful technical description should provide more than a persuasive name. At minimum, readers should be able to find:

  • a section through the wall showing every layer and support;
  • details at windows, doors, corners, floor lines, parapets and changes in direction;
  • brick and mortar requirements tied to exposure and project conditions;
  • tie, anchor, shelf-angle and lintel locations with design assumptions;
  • flashing, barrier and weep continuity, including how laps and end dams are formed;
  • installation sequence, tolerances, inspection points and protection requirements; and
  • project-specific evidence supporting any claim of improved cost, speed, durability or performance.

If those items are absent, the proposal may still be an interesting concept, but it is not yet a buildable specification.

How to use the available historical lead responsibly

The Brick Bulletin Summer 2000 contents entry can help locate the similarly titled “A new angle on brickwork” feature and determine whether it concerns the Geffrye Museum Extension. Until the original pages are checked, do not transfer its details to the Building Design + Construction title. Even if the two items prove to describe the same project, the historical method would still need to be reviewed against current codes, products and environmental requirements before reuse.

Bottom line for designers and builders

The “new angle” named in the Building Design + Construction headline remains unverified, so a responsible article cannot present a specific technique, project or performance result as fact. The dependable starting point is the established discipline of masonry design: select brick and mortar for the exposure, use compatible and corrosion-resistant components, distinguish lintels from shelf angles, provide continuous barriers and flashing with open weeps where required, and control the result through careful detailing and workmanship. Any innovation earns consideration only after it demonstrates those fundamentals with a clear load path, a clear water path and evidence suited to the project.
