A chief information officer (CIO) at a building materials distributor sets the technology direction and makes sure the systems behind branches, distribution centers, deliveries, procurement, customers and employees work together. The job combines business strategy with execution: the CIO sets an IT roadmap, modernizes infrastructure and enterprise platforms, oversees applications and cybersecurity, and turns operational data into useful decisions.
There is no single organization chart for the role. One distributor may use the title CIO; another may use chief digital and technology officer. The exact reporting line, budget, team size and ownership of individual functions are company-specific, but public announcements show a consistent pattern: the senior technology leader is accountable for business capability, not merely a help desk.

The CIO’s job in one sentence
In a building materials distribution business, the CIO aligns technology investment with how the company buys, stores, sells and delivers products. That means deciding which platforms need replacement or modernization, protecting information and operations, improving data and analytics, and helping technology teams serve associates, customers and suppliers.
Distribution adds complexity to the usual CIO brief. A system failure can affect a salesperson at a branch, a warehouse picking order, a procurement team waiting for supplier information, a delivery vehicle leaving a distribution center and a customer expecting material at a job site. The CIO therefore works across the enterprise rather than within an isolated IT department.

Why distribution creates a distinctive technology remit
Many operating points have to behave as one network
A distributor may operate branches, distribution centers and a delivery fleet. Each location needs dependable identity, connectivity, applications and data, while headquarters needs a coherent view of inventory, orders, purchasing, pricing and service. mSupply used this branch, distribution-center and delivery context when it announced Srini Sundarrajan as CIO in February 2026.
The physical and digital flows are connected
Building products move through warehouses and trucks, but the transaction begins in a digital system: a quote, order, purchase request, allocation, delivery schedule or customer-service interaction. A CIO must understand how those records move between enterprise platforms and operational applications. QXO’s July 2025 CIO announcement placed its technology roadmap in the context of supply chain, logistics, procurement and distribution.
Customers and suppliers use the same information chain
Availability, lead times, order status and delivery information must be consistent for internal users, customers and suppliers. ABC Supply described technology as supporting all three groups. The CIO’s remit consequently includes the quality and accessibility of information exposed through internal tools, online services and partner connections, even when another executive owns the commercial process.

Core responsibilities of a distributor CIO
1. Set priorities and execute the IT roadmap
The CIO translates business objectives into a sequence of technology decisions: which capabilities require investment, which systems can be improved, which should be retired and where risk must be reduced first. QXO explicitly described its CIO as responsible for executing the company’s IT roadmap.
That work requires trade-offs. A distributor may want a better customer portal, faster warehouse processing and stronger security at the same time. The CIO establishes dependencies, funding logic, delivery milestones and ownership so that projects do not become disconnected software purchases.
2. Run and modernize enterprise platforms
Core platforms record customers, products, suppliers, orders, purchasing, inventory, finance and workforce activity. The CIO oversees their availability and integration and leads modernization when an aging platform limits growth, creates manual work or prevents reliable reporting.

ABC Supply identified infrastructure modernization as a major part of Tony Vaden’s 13 years of leadership. US LBM’s public descriptions cover technology platforms and systems plus internal and external applications. mSupply described its CIO’s remit as enterprise systems strategy and platform and application modernization.
3. Protect the business with cybersecurity and resilience
Cybersecurity is part of the broader technology responsibility, not a separate concern that begins after a new system is installed. US LBM explicitly listed cybersecurity among its CIO responsibilities, and The Home Depot lists it alongside strategy, software and infrastructure in its CIO profile.
In practice, the CIO establishes how the company manages identity and access, protects sensitive information, monitors threats, patches systems, responds to incidents and restores operations after an outage. The public descriptions do not establish that every distributor CIO personally performs each security task; they show that security belongs in the senior technology leader’s accountability framework.
4. Make data and analytics useful
A distributor generates data at every handoff: sales activity, inventory movements, purchase orders, supplier performance, delivery events and customer interactions. The CIO builds the governance, platforms and skills needed to make that data trustworthy and usable.
ABC Supply credited its technology leadership with expanding data and analytics. US LBM cited data management and analysis. QXO described Eric Nelson’s previous experience in analytics and machine learning, but that background is not evidence that every distributor CIO owns an artificial-intelligence program. A CIO may sponsor AI or advanced analytics when those capabilities support the company’s strategy, controls and data quality.
5. Connect technology to supply chain, logistics and procurement
Technology decisions affect whether the business can see available stock, replenish the right products, select a delivery route, communicate a delay or reconcile a supplier transaction. QXO’s announcement associated its CIO role with logistics, procurement, supply chain and distribution, while describing Nelson’s experience across those areas.

The CIO does not automatically become the owner of each process. Operations, merchandising, transportation or procurement leaders may retain process authority. The CIO’s responsibility is to provide the platforms, integrations, data and controls that allow those leaders to run their functions effectively.
6. Improve the experience of associates, customers and suppliers
Technology should remove friction for the people using it. For associates, that may mean reliable branch applications, mobile access or simpler workflows. For customers, it may mean accurate availability, ordering and delivery updates. For suppliers, it may mean dependable purchase-order and inventory information.
ABC Supply’s incoming CIO, Larry Sullivan, described the purpose this way: “Technology continues to play an important role in how we support our associates, customers and suppliers, and I look forward to helping advance that mission.” The statement captures the role’s business-facing orientation without assigning every user-facing product to the CIO personally.

Why the title and reporting line can change
Companies use different titles for a similar senior mandate. US LBM’s 2023 announcement called Andrew Campbell executive vice president and chief information officer, with responsibility for platforms and systems, applications, cybersecurity, and data management and analysis. Its March 2025 announcement described Jonathan Greene in the expanded role of chief digital and technology officer, responsible for all technology platforms and systems and reporting directly to the president and CEO.
The change illustrates two points. First, a technology leader may be asked to cover digital capabilities as well as traditional information systems. Second, a title change does not by itself prove that every internal responsibility, budget or team structure changed. Public announcements establish the stated remit, not a universal model for distributors.
| Company announcement | Title and date | Stated emphasis | Reporting or scope detail |

What a CIO does during a typical business initiative
Consider a project to improve delivery visibility. The CIO would not simply select a tracking application. The work normally moves through a sequence of business and technology decisions:

- Define the outcome. Agree whether the priority is fewer missed deliveries, more accurate customer updates, lower call volume or better fleet utilization.
- Map the information flow. Identify where the order, inventory allocation, loading event, vehicle status and proof of delivery are created and which systems need to exchange them.
- Assess the current platform. Determine whether existing applications can support the requirement through configuration, integration or modernization.
- Set controls and ownership. Establish data definitions, access rights, cybersecurity requirements, service levels and the operational team accountable for each step.
- Deliver in stages. Pilot with representative branches or routes, measure the result, resolve defects and expand without destabilizing core operations.
- Operate and improve. Monitor availability, data quality, adoption and business outcomes after launch; a project is not complete when the software is switched on.
The same logic applies to a branch application, supplier integration, warehouse modernization or analytics program. The CIO connects the desired business result to an operable, secure and supportable technology service.

How distributors can judge whether the CIO is effective
Technology activity alone is a poor scorecard. Useful measures tie systems to business performance and risk, such as:
- Availability and recovery performance for critical branch, warehouse, ordering and delivery systems.
- Time required to process an order, update inventory or provide a reliable delivery status.
- Data-quality indicators for product, customer, supplier and inventory records.
- Adoption and completion rates for new associate or customer workflows.
- Security measures such as remediation time, privileged-access reviews and tested recovery procedures.
- Progress against the approved IT roadmap, including benefits achieved rather than projects merely completed.
- Technology cost and capacity managed against business priorities, with assumptions made explicit.
These measures should be agreed with business and operations leaders. The cited company announcements do not provide a common industry benchmark or a basis for ranking one distributor’s CIO against another.
What the CIO does not necessarily own
A CIO may support a process without being its functional owner. Merchandising may own assortment and pricing; procurement may own supplier negotiations; operations may own warehouse and fleet execution; sales may own customer relationships. Likewise, a CIO may oversee cybersecurity governance while security specialists, legal teams and business owners perform specific controls.
The same caution applies to artificial intelligence, software purchasing and branch operations. The public role descriptions establish broad technology accountability, not a rule that every CIO personally approves every application, runs every warehouse or leads every AI initiative.
Leadership transitions show the role’s strategic importance
ABC Supply announced on October 6, 2026 that CIO Tony Vaden would retire effective January 1, 2027, after 13 years of leadership, with Larry Sullivan, then vice president of software, data and digital transformation, named as successor. ABC credited Vaden’s tenure with infrastructure modernization, expanded data and analytics, and the growth of IT into a strategic business partner. The announcement also described ABC Supply as having more than 1,000 locations across the United States and Canada; that is company-reported scale context, not a measure of CIO performance.

QXO announced Eric Nelson’s appointment as CIO on July 10, 2025, effective July 14. Chairman and chief executive officer Brad Jacobs said: “Eric brings a rare blend of technical acumen and business insight to QXO. His proven track record of delivering significant impact across logistics, procurement, manufacturing and sales aligns perfectly with the innovation already underway at QXO.” The statement describes the appointee and company’s rationale, not a universal requirement that every distributor CIO have the same background. QXO also cited an $800 billion building-products distribution industry figure; that market-size claim is attributable to QXO and is not accompanied by an independent methodology in the announcement.
mSupply’s February 18, 2026 announcement similarly framed its CIO role around enterprise systems, modernization, operational excellence and customer-focused innovation. Together, these announcements show why distributors treat the position as an enterprise leadership role during periods of growth, integration or modernization.
Skills that matter in the role
The strongest fit combines technical judgment with operating-business fluency. Important capabilities include:
- Enterprise architecture and platform modernization, including integration and cloud decisions.
- Cybersecurity, resilience, privacy and risk governance.
- Data management, analytics and disciplined evaluation of emerging AI uses.
- Understanding of inventory, procurement, logistics, branch, warehouse and delivery workflows.
- Program and change leadership across locations and business units.
- Communication with executives, associates, customers, suppliers and technology teams.
- Financial prioritization: choosing investments that improve capability, reduce risk or remove costly friction.
Technical knowledge without operational credibility can produce systems that are elegant but impractical. Business knowledge without technology discipline can produce disconnected tools and unmanaged risk. The CIO’s value lies in joining both.
Bottom line for a building materials distributor
A distributor CIO is the executive who turns technology into a dependable operating capability. The role covers strategy and delivery: setting the roadmap, modernizing platforms, protecting systems, governing data and connecting digital work to branches, warehouses, logistics, procurement, customers, suppliers and employees. Titles vary, and the boundaries are company-specific, but the central test is consistent: does technology help the distributor operate safely, reliably and intelligently at the scale its business requires?
