Choose the Volvo L30 when access, transport weight or ground-bearing limits matter more than maximum production. Choose the L35 when you routinely need the larger bucket class, higher tipping load and greater carrying capacity. The two loaders show the same published gross horsepower, but they are not equivalent machines: the L35 is heavier and is built around more bucket volume and payload. Your final choice should be based on the exact bucket, linkage, tires, attachment carrier, material density and market specification, not horsepower alone.
For a small farm or landscaping crew, the L30 is usually the easier machine to place on constrained sites and move between them. For repetitive stockpile work, truck loading or dense-material handling, the L35 can complete more work per pass and provide more margin against tipping limits. The sections below explain where that trade-off matters and how to verify a configuration before ordering.

Quick answer: buy for access or production
- Pick the L30 if narrow approaches, softer ground, lower transport mass or frequent movement between small sites are dominant concerns. Its lower published operating weight favors those conditions while retaining a useful fork payload and a 1.3 yd³ bucket class in the current U.S. listing.
- Pick the L35 if most of the day is spent loading trucks, moving stockpiles or carrying heavier loads. Its 1.6 yd³ bucket class and higher published tipping load support greater production per cycle, while its additional operating weight demands more attention to access, hauling and ground conditions.
- Do not decide from horsepower alone. Both current U.S. product pages list 74 hp gross power. Bucket capacity, tipping load, operating weight, linkage, tires and attachment carrier create the practical difference.
Neither model is automatically the better value for every job. A L35 that cannot reach a site, stay within a transport limit or work safely on the available ground is less productive than a L30 that can operate continuously. Conversely, a L30 that requires many extra passes for your normal material flow can cost more in time and handling even though it is the smaller purchase.

| Specification | Volvo L30 | Volvo L35 | What it means on the job |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gross power | 74 hp | 74 hp | Equal listed engine power does not remove the difference in bucket volume, mass or stability. |
| Bucket capacity | 1.3 yd³ | 1.6 yd³ | The L35 can move more material per pass when the selected bucket and material density allow it. |
| Tipping load at 40° full turn | 8,488 lb | 9,590 lb | The L35 has more published margin when turning with a load, subject to configuration and operating conditions. |
| Operating weight | 12,125 lb | 13,448 lb | The L30 places less mass on the ground and generally presents an easier transport and access problem. |
| Fork payload at 80% | 5,291 lb | Not stated on the cited U.S. product-page comparison | Use the exact fork-rating table for the L35 configuration before planning pallet or bale work. |
| Breakout force | Not stated on the cited U.S. product-page comparison | 13,601 lbf | This published L35 figure indicates digging and pile-entry capability; it is not a substitute for a rated payload calculation. |
Configuration warning: Bucket, linkage, tire size, attachment carrier, ballast, operating fluids and market specification can change these results. A 40° full-turn tipping-load value is not interchangeable with a straight static value or with a fork payload at a specified percentage. Ask for the data sheet for the serial-numbered build, including the intended attachment.
Why the same horsepower does not make the L30 and L35 the same loader
Bucket volume changes cycle productivity
The L35’s published bucket class is larger than the L30’s. If the material is compatible with that bucket and your truck, stockpile or hopper can accept the load, each pass can carry more. Over a repetitive loading cycle, that can reduce the number of passes needed. The advantage disappears if the material is too dense for the allowable payload, the bucket cannot be filled, or the loading target has a strict weight limit.
Operating weight affects access as much as capacity
The L30’s lower listed operating weight is important when a site has a narrow entrance, a temporary road, a floor with a known bearing limit or a transport arrangement sized close to the machine’s mass. Weight also interacts with tire selection and surface condition. A heavier loader may have useful stability, but it can rut soft ground or impose a constraint that a lighter machine avoids.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTipping load is a stability reference, not a universal payload
Volvo’s U.S. figures use a 40° full-turn condition. Turning, boom position, attachment center of gravity, uneven ground and material density all affect the safe load in a real cycle. Treat the published value as a configuration-specific reference. It should not be converted directly into a promised bucket payload, fork rating or road-going load.
How to match each size to common jobs
Small farms and acreage work
The L30 is often the better fit for a farm that clears lanes, handles manure or aggregate in moderate quantities, maintains yards and moves between buildings. Lower machine mass can simplify access through gates and around existing structures. Its listed fork payload at 80% gives a starting point for pallet, bale or attachment planning, but the actual fork rating depends on the carrier, forks and load center.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Choose the L35 for a farm that loads trucks frequently, shifts large stockpiles every day or handles heavier materials where the L30 would spend much of its time at the edge of its tipping or fork limits. Confirm turning space, shed-door height, ramp strength and transport capacity before choosing the larger frame.
Landscaping, nurseries and site preparation
Landscaping contractors usually benefit from the L30 when they work in established gardens, residential drives and compact sites where ground disturbance and access determine whether the loader can reach the work. A smaller machine can also be easier to schedule on a trailer shared among several crews, provided the complete transported combination remains within legal limits.

The L35 makes more sense for commercial landscape yards, bulk-soil operations and preparation work that involves continuous loading of trucks or large piles. Its additional bucket volume can improve output when the receiving truck and material density are suitable. Check the required dump height and reach with the exact bucket and linkage; a model name alone does not establish that geometry.
Truck loading and aggregate yards
For repetitive stockpile-to-truck cycles, the L35’s larger bucket class and higher published full-turn tipping load are the reasons to consider the extra size. Production depends on the whole cycle: pile position, truck height, turning room, haul distance and whether the material can be carried without exceeding the loader’s stability limit.
The L30 can still load trucks effectively when the truck side height, bucket choice and target payload fit its geometry. Before buying, measure the highest point the bucket must clear and the required forward reach at that height. Then compare those measurements with Volvo’s configuration-specific lift and dump data.

Forks, pallets and bales
Fork work is governed by load center, fork length, carrier type and the manufacturer’s rated payload, not by bucket capacity. The current U.S. L30 listing publishes a 5,291 lb fork payload at 80%. No corresponding value is stated in the cited U.S. L35 comparison, so obtain the L35’s exact fork-payload chart before assuming it can carry a particular pallet, bale or machine component.
Use the percentage and standard shown on the rating sheet. A payload at 80% of tipping load is a different safety reference from a 60% value, and neither should be applied to an attachment with a different center of gravity without verification.
Configuration and attachment choices
Start with the carrier, then select the attachment
Volvo lists general-purpose, multi-purpose, light-material, high-tip, side-tip, grading, clamp and stone-sorting buckets for both models. Availability and ratings vary by model year, linkage and market. A wheel-loader bucket attachment that fits one carrier may not be approved for another, even when the loader names appear similar.
- Define the material: soil, sand, gravel, mulch, manure, waste, stone or another product. Density determines whether the nominal bucket can be filled without exceeding the loader’s limit.
- Define the required task: digging, carrying, high dumping, side dumping, grading, clamping or sorting. A high-tip or side-tip design changes reach and center of gravity compared with a general-purpose bucket.
- Confirm the attachment carrier and coupler. Verify hydraulic connections, locking method, width, pin or interface dimensions and the approved attachment list for the exact machine year.
- Request the operating weight, tipping-load and payload data with that attachment installed. Do not use the base-machine number when the attachment materially changes weight or load center.
Lift height and reach must be measured for the actual setup
Two loaders can have similar horsepower yet place the bucket differently at maximum lift. If you are filling high-sided trucks, hoppers or feed mixers, compare dump clearance and forward reach using the selected linkage and bucket. If the job is grading or clamp work, compare the working envelope in the position you actually use, not only the maximum headline height.
Stability, payload and the standards behind the figures
Volvo’s L30B Pro brochure gives a useful example of why model labels and rating standards matter. For listed general-purpose configurations, it reports 5,500–5,520 kg operating weight and fork payloads of 1,800 kg at 60% and 2,400 kg at 80% under EN 474-3. These are brochure values for specified configurations; they should not be substituted for the current U.S. L30 page or assumed to describe every L30 sold in every market.

Volvo’s L35H guide lists, for one Z-BAR configuration, a 1.2 m³ general-purpose bucket, a 4,900 kg straight static tipping load, a 4,350 kg full-turn tipping load and a 6,150 kg operating weight. Those values use a different model designation, units and test descriptions from the U.S. L35 figures in the table. They are useful for understanding the configuration effect, not for making a direct one-to-one conversion between L35 versions.
- Use straight-static values only for the condition they describe; do not call them full-turn values.
- Keep the stated percentage with any fork payload. A 60% rating cannot be treated as an 80% rating.
- Check whether the number includes a particular bucket, tires, fluids, cab or counterweight.
- Have the dealer confirm the applicable local standard and the rated load for your attachment and load center.
Terrain, traction and ground clearance
Volvo highlights portal-axle ground clearance on the product pages. That feature can matter on rutted tracks, broken ground and sites where the axle or differential would otherwise be exposed, but clearance alone does not determine traction or safe operation. Tire type, inflation, surface moisture, slope and the carried load all change the result.
Walk the intended route before selecting the size. Note gate width, turning radius, overhead obstructions, ramp grades, soft spots, drainage crossings and the locations where the loader must turn while loaded. Then ask the dealer to verify tire and traction options for the local terrain. A larger loader may offer useful mass and capacity, while the L30 may be the only practical choice where access or bearing pressure is limiting.
A step-by-step buying process
- Record your heaviest routine load. Weigh a typical bucket or fork load, identify its material density and note the load center. Include occasional work only if it is important enough to justify the machine size.
- Measure the destination. Record truck-side height, hopper height, required reach, gate and shed dimensions, turning space and the steepest ramp. Use these measurements to screen out a machine that cannot complete the cycle.
- Set the site limits. Establish allowable ground pressure, floor or bridge limits, transport capacity and any road restrictions. Compare the complete operating and transport configuration, not a bare-machine estimate.
- Select the attachment family. Decide whether the primary tool is a general-purpose, light-material, high-tip, side-tip, grading, clamp, stone-sorting or multi-purpose bucket, or forks. Request approved carrier and hydraulic details for the exact model year.
- Compare rated data on one basis. Put the same attachment, tire assumption, tipping-load condition and payload standard side by side. Do not mix U.S. product-page figures with brochure values from another model or market without labeling the difference.
- Plan the cycle. Estimate passes, travel distance, truck exchange time and safe turning room. The L35’s larger bucket only improves output when the rest of the cycle can accept it.
- Verify with a dealer before signing. Ask for the serial-numbered specification sheet, lift and dump geometry, attachment approval, fork chart, operating weight, tire options and local compliance information. Keep that documentation with the purchase decision.
Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by horsepower only
Because both U.S. listings show the same gross horsepower, buyers sometimes assume the machines will fill, carry and load identically. They will not. Use the bucket, tipping-load, operating-weight and attachment data together.

Mixing model generations and markets
The L30B Pro and L35H brochure figures illustrate different configurations from the current U.S. product-page comparison. A local dealer should reconcile the model suffix, year, units, test condition and applicable standard before you compare numbers.
Ignoring material density
A bucket that can be filled with mulch may be too much for dense stone or wet soil. Plan by weight and center of gravity, then adjust fill level and attachment choice to stay within the rated condition.
Forgetting the loaded route
A loader may enter an area empty but become unstable, rut the surface or lack turning room when loaded. Inspect the full route and the dumping position, including slopes and soft ground, before committing to the heavier model.

Decision checklist
- Choose the L30 when your limiting factor is access, transport mass, ground bearing, tight maneuvering or moderate production, and its rated bucket or fork capacity covers the work.
- Choose the L35 when your limiting factor is passes per truck, stockpile volume, higher carrying demand or the need for more tipping-load margin, and the site can accept its additional mass.
- Pause and obtain a configuration quote when you need a high-tip, side-tip, clamp, grading or stone-sorting attachment; the attachment can change geometry, weight and rated capacity.
- Reject either machine if the exact configuration cannot meet the required dump height, reach, fork rating, transport limit or ground conditions.
The right choice is therefore a job-fit decision: L30 for constrained access with sufficient capacity, L35 for sustained material production with room for its larger envelope. Confirm the exact configuration and rating sheet before purchase, because the published model numbers are starting points rather than universal limits.
