What you are actually paying for
Vivint’s total price has several separate components:
#1 Best Overall
- AI + RADAR DETECTION: Combines RADAR sensing and computer vision AI to precisely identify people and vehicles, significantly reducing false alerts.
- IMPROVED 4K SENSOR: Delivers crystal-clear Full HD video quality, even when zooming in live, with enhanced night vision for round-the-clock surveillance.
- SMART DETER TECHNOLOGY: Features a large LED light ring and built-in whistle trigger to visibly warn and deter potential intruders before incidents occur.
- ON-DEVICE AI PROCESSING: Processes data directly on the camera for faster, more reliable performance that continues functioning even if Wi-Fi goes down.
- TWO-WAY AUDIO & SMART HOME INTEGRATION: Outward-projecting speakers with an improved amplifier enable clear communication, with seamless Vivint Smart Home integration for real-time alerts.
- Equipment: Purchased or financed security and smart-home hardware.
- Professional installation: A promotional waiver may apply, but standard or custom installations can carry a charge.
- Monitoring: The recurring charge for 24/7 professional monitoring and associated services.
- Add-ons: Cameras, locks, sensors, thermostats, smoke and carbon-monoxide detection, garage controls, and other devices.
- Video or service features: Depending on the package, storage, playback, warranties, or other service features may affect the bill.
- Taxes and fees: These may be added to advertised prices.
- Financing costs: A financed equipment balance may be separate from monitoring.
Use this worksheet before comparing providers:
Total cost = equipment + installation + (monthly monitoring × months) + add-ons + video/service fees + taxes and fees + financing costs − documented discounts

Contract versus no-contract pricing
Vivint is neither universally contract-free nor universally locked into one term. Its published offers show both structures.
Promotional 36-month example
The published promotional example lists $199.99 for equipment, free professional installation, and $24.99 monthly monitoring with a 36-month agreement:
Rank #2
- Easy Setup: Install in minutes all by yourself. The entry sensors attach to doors and windows, while the motion sensor and keypad can be secured to walls via the included mounts. No Monthly Fees: Eufy Security products are one-time purchases that combine security with convenience. Instant Alerts: Get notified as soon as motion or a breach is detected with the eufy Security app. What’s In The Box: HomeBase, keypad, motion sensor, 2 × entry sensors, owner's manual, and Happy Card.
$199.99 + ($24.99 × 36) = $1,099.63
Monitoring alone at $24.99 per month is $299.88 per year. The lower initial price may therefore come with less flexibility.
Upfront, month-to-month example
The published no-contract example lists $349.99 for equipment, $199 for installation, and $29.99 monthly monitoring:
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match$349.99 + $199 + ($29.99 × 36) = $1,628.63
Monitoring alone at this rate is $359.88 per year. The example costs more over three years, but it avoids the stated long-term service commitment. “Cancel anytime” does not necessarily erase an unpaid equipment balance, taxes, or other contractual obligations.
Before signing, ask for these points in writing:
- Contract length and automatic-renewal terms
- The early-termination formula
- Whether the monitoring rate can change
- Whether unpaid equipment becomes immediately due after cancellation
- Moving and transfer rules
- Any installation or relocation charge
Can Vivint equipment be financed?
Yes. Vivint says qualified customers may receive 0% APR financing for up to 60 months, subject to credit approval and the terms of a third-party financing partner.
Financing and monitoring are separate obligations. A combined quote of, for example, $60 per month could include a monitoring charge plus an equipment payment. Paying off the equipment does not necessarily cancel monitoring, and canceling monitoring does not necessarily eliminate the equipment balance. The exact APR, lender, credit inquiry, term, and payoff rules come from the financing documents—not from the headline promotional price.
Rank #3
- INTUITIVE TOUCHSCREEN CONTROL: The responsive touchscreen hub makes everyday home security simple. View system status and quickly switch between Stay Arm, Away Arm, Disarm, and SOS modes directly from the security panel—clear, convenient control for every family member.
- NO MONTHLY SUBSCRIPTION FEES: This wireless home security system requires no monthly security subscription. Use the alarm hub and Smart Life app for daily monitoring and remote control without paying ongoing service fees, making it a practical security solution for houses, apartments, renters, and homeowners.
- WIFI + 4G DUAL CONNECTIVITY: Connect the touchscreen alarm system to 2.4GHz WiFi for remote arm/disarm control, system management, and instant Smart Life app alerts. Insert a compatible 4G SIM card to enable alarm phone calls and SMS notifications. SIM card and cellular plan are sold separately; 5GHz WiFi is not supported.
- 16-PIECE WHOLE-HOME PROTECTION: The DIY alarm kit includes 1 touchscreen hub, 6 door/window sensors, 3 PIR motion detectors, 2 remote controls, 2 RFID key fobs, 1 SOS button, and 1 wired siren. Monitor doors, windows, hallways, bedrooms, garages, and other important areas throughout your home.
- EASY DIY SETUP WITH 120DB ALARM:Wireless sensors and accessories arrive pre-paired, reducing setup time and eliminating the need for professional installation. Mount the alarm hub on a wall or place it on a desktop, while the external 120dB wired siren and one-press SOS button provide powerful audible alerts during intrusions or emergencies.
Which upgrades increase the price?
Vivint says the total changes when you add equipment. Common additions include:
Recommended Free Tools
- Extra door and window or motion sensors
- Glass-break sensors
- Doorbell, indoor, and outdoor cameras
- Smart locks and additional keypads
- Smart thermostats
- Smoke and carbon-monoxide detection
- Garage, gate, or other access controls
- Video storage and playback features
Cameras can raise costs through hardware, installation, storage, and service requirements. Do not treat the basic HomeProtect price as the price of a camera-heavy system. HomeProtect Pro requires at least $749.99 in equipment expenditure after discounts, professional installation, and a Vivint services agreement, according to Vivint’s published information.
What does Vivint monitoring include?
Vivint advertises 24/7 professional monitoring, alarm-event monitoring, emergency-response coordination, mobile notifications, app control, false-alarm management, cellular connectivity, and battery backup on advertised configurations. The exact equipment and capabilities depend on the system quoted. Confirm battery duration, cellular service, camera features, video storage, and response procedures for your installation.
Vivint states that functionality is limited without a Vivint services plan, including loss of remote connectivity. Ask whether local arming and disarming, cameras, recording, playback, cellular backup, and compatibility with another monitoring provider will continue after cancellation. Do not assume Vivint hardware can be freely reused with another provider.
Cancellation, moving, and special circumstances
There is no single universal cancellation price in the public information reviewed. Your liability depends on the signed service agreement, financing agreement, applicable state law, and reason for cancellation.

Vivint has described review policies for certain circumstances, including death, bankruptcy, and assisted-living transitions, but these should not be treated as automatic waivers. Vivint also announced on August 21, 2023, a 60-calendar-day cancellation period for customers age 65 and older. Because that announcement is dated and policies can change, verify current eligibility directly with Vivint. See its company policy information and the 2023 announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Vivint suitable for renters?
It can be, particularly when the buyer pays for equipment upfront and chooses the published month-to-month structure. However, renters should check landlord approval, drilling requirements, transfer rules, relocation charges, and whether an agreement follows them to a new address.
Vivint specifically notes that its Doorbell Camera Pro is hardwired and may not suit every rental. A financed or contracted system can also be inconvenient if you move before the term ends.
Vivint versus alternatives
| Factor | Vivint | DIY-oriented alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Installation | Professional | Usually self-installed; optional help may vary |
| Monitoring | Professional monitoring is central to the service model | Often optional |
| Upfront cost | May be reduced by promotions or financing | Usually equipment is paid upfront |
| Contract risk | May apply to discounted offers | Often more flexible |
| Integration | Designed as one security and smart-home ecosystem | May involve multiple brands or apps |
| Portability | Transfer and compatibility must be verified | Typically easier to move |
| Owner responsibility | More installation and service support | More setup and troubleshooting responsibility |
ADT is another professionally monitored option, but its equipment, installation, offers, and contract terms must be compared line by line. SimpliSafe and Ring Alarm represent more DIY-oriented approaches. Local independent alarm companies may also be worth quotes when local service and customized installation matter. Do not compare monitoring prices alone; match equipment, labor, storage, contract terms, and cancellation exposure.
