The Uzima Borehole Drilling System is the scenario for the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Computer Studies Paper 3 project. The assignment asks candidates to build a documented database-management system for registering clients and services, calculating charges and tax, and producing useful reports. The clearest requirements are in the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) 2024 project brief. A hosted student report attributes an implementation to Kyalo Simon Mambo of Utithi Secondary School and describes Microsoft Access tables, queries, forms, reports and referential integrity; those implementation details belong to that report, not to a KNEC platform mandate.
What the Uzima project is
Uzima Company is an assignment scenario for a borehole-service provider. The available documents do not establish that it is a currently operating, independently verified company. For the examination, candidates are expected to use a database-management system and submit both hard-copy and soft-copy documentation, including a stored copy of the system and documentation on removable media. The brief gives the project period as January 2024 to July 2024, described as seven months.

The project is therefore best understood as a school database-design exercise: translate the supplied business rules into related records, calculation queries, data-entry forms and management reports.
Functional requirements in the KNEC brief
- Register clients and maintain their details.
- Record the services and items supplied to each client.
- Calculate each client’s total payable amount.
- Calculate plumbing charges, tax, survey fees and local-authority fees.
- Report revenue by service.
- Cover industrial, commercial and domestic clients.
The scenario includes three drilling options, three pump categories, tank installation, plumbing and pump maintenance. These are examination requirements and scenario details, not confirmation of a current commercial catalogue.

|---|---|---|
| Industrial | 20,000 | 50,000 |
| Commercial | 15,000 | 30,000 |
| Domestic | 7,000 | 10,000 |
Drilling down payments
| Drilling option | Down payment |
|---|---|
| Symmetric | 130,000 |
| Core | 225,000 |
| Geo-technical | 335,000 |
Pump costs
| Pump category | Cost |
|---|---|
| Submersible electric | 90,000 |
| Solar | 65,000 |

Depth and height rates
The brief lists rates of 1,000, 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 per meter for its specified depth or height bands. Because the supplied extract does not preserve the band boundaries, a faithful implementation should copy those boundaries directly from the examination paper rather than inventing ranges.

Tax rule
Every client is charged 16% tax on the total cost of the service offered. In a calculation query, represent this as Tax = 0.16 × ServiceSubtotal and TotalPayable = ServiceSubtotal + Tax. Keep the subtotal definition explicit so that survey, local-authority, drilling, pump, plumbing and any other included items are not accidentally counted twice.

Core entities
| Table | Purpose | Typical key fields |
|---|---|---|
| Clients | One record per customer | ClientID, name, contact, address, ClientCategory |
| Services | Catalogue of drilling, pump and other services | ServiceID, service name, service type, base amount |
| FeeSchedule | Category fees and per-meter rates | FeeID, category, fee type, amount or rate |
| ServiceTransactions | Header record for work ordered by a client | TransactionID, ClientID, date, depth/height where applicable |
| TransactionLines | Individual services or items on a transaction | LineID, TransactionID, ServiceID, quantity, unit amount |
| PumpMaintenance | Maintenance events when tracked separately | MaintenanceID, TransactionID or ClientID, date, charge, notes |
Use primary keys for every table and foreign keys from transactions to clients and from transaction lines to both transactions and services. Enforce referential integrity so a line cannot point to a nonexistent client transaction or service. Store category and service selections as controlled values (for example, combo boxes) rather than free-text spellings.
Building it in Microsoft Access
A hosted report describes an ACCDB implementation in Microsoft Access and uses Access 2010 for illustration. That is one documented approach; KNEC’s wording requires a database-management system, not Microsoft Access specifically.

- Create the tables. In Access, use Create > Table Design. Assign AutoNumber primary keys and suitable data types for names, dates, quantities and monetary amounts.
- Define relationships. Open Database Tools > Relationships, add the tables, drag each primary key to its matching foreign key, select Enforce Referential Integrity, and save the relationship layout.
- Load reference data. Enter the three client categories, drilling down payments, pump costs, survey/local-authority fees and the four supplied per-meter rates. Preserve the source labels and do not add an unstated currency.
- Create entry forms. Use Create > Form Wizard for clients and a main-form/subform design for transactions and transaction lines. Use combo boxes for category, drilling option, pump type and service.
- Build calculation queries. Join clients, transactions, lines and fee data. Calculate line extensions, the service subtotal, 16% tax and total payable. Keep calculated fields in queries or reports unless a stored snapshot is required for audit purposes.
- Create reports. Use Create > Report Wizard for client statements, transaction summaries, fee listings and revenue grouped by service. Add criteria prompts for dates, category or client when the report needs filtering.
- Test controls and totals. Try missing clients, duplicate services, zero quantities, invalid categories and transactions with no lines. Confirm that referential-integrity warnings appear where expected and that a report total agrees with the underlying query.
Recommended calculations and validation
- Calculate a drilling charge from the selected option and the applicable depth/height band exactly as specified in the brief.
- Add pump, tank, plumbing, maintenance and other selected service lines only once.
- Apply the category’s survey and local-authority fees to the transaction when those fees are part of the service.
- Apply 16% tax to the defined service subtotal, then show subtotal, tax and total as separate fields.
- Prevent negative depths, negative quantities and blank mandatory client or service fields with validation rules.
- Use a unique transaction number and date so revenue reports can be reconciled to individual records.
Feasibility: what can and cannot be concluded
The hosted student report contains sections labelled feasibility and makes claims about the proposed system. Those are statements in that report, not independent feasibility findings. The available evidence does not include an authoritative company record, an independent user study, a deployed-system evaluation, regulator or stakeholder approval, measured performance results, or independently measured savings. A school project can demonstrate a coherent design and documented calculations without proving production readiness.
For an academically sound feasibility section, separate the questions: technical feasibility (can the chosen DBMS model the records and calculations?), operational feasibility (can intended users enter and retrieve data?), economic feasibility (what hardware, software and training are needed?), and schedule feasibility (can the work be completed in the January–July project window?). Label assumptions and explain how each would be verified instead of presenting them as measured outcomes.
What a complete submission should contain
- Problem definition and objectives tied to the listed client, service, fee, tax and reporting requirements.
- Requirements analysis, data dictionary, table designs and an entity-relationship or relationship diagram.
- Implemented tables, relationships, forms, queries and reports in the selected DBMS.
- Test cases showing expected and actual results for normal and invalid data.
- User instructions, maintenance or backup guidance, and clear limits of the scenario model.
- Hard-copy documentation plus the soft-copy database and documentation stored as required by the brief.
