Top 5 Air Quality Monitors for Home Assistant (2026)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AirGradient ONE is the best overall air-quality monitor for Home Assistant because it combines broad sensor coverage with local operation and an official integration. The Apollo AIR-1 is the strongest ESPHome alternative, while the Qingping Air Monitor Lite is the best compact Bluetooth model with a display. The inexpensive IKEA ALPSTUGA is the best Matter-over-Thread option, and Awair Element remains attractive for its design but carries important API and cloud caveats.

For Home Assistant, the connection method matters as much as the sensor list. Local Wi-Fi, ESPHome, Bluetooth, or Matter/Thread generally provides a more resilient automation platform than a cloud-only API. Prices and availability below are U.S. observations and should be rechecked before purchase.

What to look for in an air-quality monitor

PM2.5 and PM10

PM2.5 measures fine particles associated with cooking, candles, smoke, combustion, and outdoor pollution entering a building. It is often the most useful reading for triggering an air purifier. PM10 covers coarser particles, but not every monitor measures it, and some devices expose PM2.5 and PM10-like entities without independently distinguishing the particle ranges. Treat the exact entity and sensor specification as important.

CO2

CO2 is primarily a ventilation and occupancy indicator. A rising reading can suggest that a room needs more fresh air, but CO2 is not a complete measure of indoor air quality and does not detect every harmful gas. It should not be confused with carbon-monoxide detection.

VOC, TVOC, and NOx

VOC or TVOC readings can reveal changes caused by cleaning products, furnishings, cooking, fragrances, or other sources. They are generally best used for trends and relative changes, not as a chemical-identification system. NOx can add useful context, but the same caution applies: a displayed value does not identify every individual pollutant.

Temperature and humidity

Temperature and relative humidity provide essential context. They help with comfort, condensation, mold-risk monitoring, and interpretation of other readings. A humidity automation should use the building’s construction, climate, surface temperatures, and ventilation strategy—not a single universal threshold.

Local connectivity and infrastructure

Home Assistant-compatible devices can use several different paths:

  • Official core integration: maintained within Home Assistant and generally preferable to an unofficial workaround.
  • ESPHome: a local Wi-Fi approach with strong customization and fast communication potential.
  • Bluetooth: useful for compact devices, but range may require a Bluetooth proxy.
  • Matter over Thread: a standards-based local-fabric approach, but it requires a working Thread Border Router.
  • Cloud API: convenient when supported, but dependent on accounts, internet access, vendor policies, quotas, and refresh intervals.

Home Assistant’s official integration directory is the appropriate place to confirm current support. Its generic Air quality integration is an aggregation framework; it does not connect directly to a monitor by itself.

1. AirGradient ONE: best overall

Buy it if: Home Assistant is the center of your smart-home system and you want broad sensing without depending on a cloud service.

The AirGradient ONE measures PM2.5, CO2, TVOCs, NOx, temperature, and humidity. AirGradient says the monitor works completely locally and is officially Works With Home Assistant certified. That combination makes it the safest all-round recommendation for serious Home Assistant automations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Home Assistant’s official AirGradient integration uses local polling and supports AirGradient indoor and outdoor monitors. It was introduced in Home Assistant 2024.6 and requires firmware 3.1.1 or newer for setup and discovery. The device can be auto-discovered; if that fails, use Settings → Devices & services → Add Integration → AirGradient and enter the monitor’s hostname or IP address.

Rank #2
Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor, Detects temperature, humidity, carbon monoxide, PM2.5 and VOCs, Get notifications when air quality drops, Works with Alexa
  • Know your air – An Alexa air quality monitor that makes it easy to understand what’s in your indoor air.
  • Track and measure – Our indoor air quality monitor keeps tabs on 5 key factors: particulate matter (PM 2.5), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide (CO), humidity, and temperature.
  • Stay informed – Get an indication of current indoor air quality from the color-coded LED, and detailed information and an easy-to-understand air quality score in the Alexa app.
  • Real-time alerts - Get notifications on your phone or announcements on Echo devices when Alexa detects poor indoor air quality.
  • Automate climate control - Enable Routines to turn on or off your compatible Alexa devices, such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, and fans, when the indoor air quality sensors detect changes.

Its main advantages are comprehensive coverage, local network operation, and a direct fit for ventilation and purifier automations. The compromises are price, wired USB power, Wi-Fi dependence, and the need to interpret VOC and NOx readings as trend signals rather than laboratory-grade chemical analysis. The official integration’s update entity cannot install updates automatically; a manual reboot is required after installing updates.

Verdict: The best overall choice when privacy, local control, and useful automation data matter more than the smallest price or a battery-powered form factor.

2. Apollo AIR-1: best Home Assistant-first enthusiast monitor

Buy it if: You are comfortable with ESPHome and want a local, modifiable device designed around Home Assistant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Apollo AIR-1 uses Wi-Fi and ESPHome, with local control and no required subscription or cloud service. Apollo also provides software and CAD resources for community modification, making it particularly appealing to technically confident users.

Apollo’s product page listed the AIR-1 at $109.99 during the research period. Availability may be intermittent because Apollo says its MiCS-4514 gas sensor has become difficult to source. Do not assume every configuration or production run exposes exactly the same gas-sensor coverage; check the current listing before ordering.

ESPHome gives the AIR-1 a strong local-control profile and makes it a natural fit for frequent Home Assistant updates. The trade-off is a more enthusiast-oriented ownership experience than a typical consumer appliance. Firmware versions, entity names, onboarding screens, and available sensor variants should be checked against Apollo’s current documentation rather than assumed from older guides.

Verdict: The best Home Assistant-first alternative to AirGradient, especially for users who value customization and local ESPHome operation over a polished mass-market experience.

Home Assistant’s official Qingping integration supports the Air Monitor Lite model CGDN1. It discovers the device through Bluetooth once Home Assistant Bluetooth support is working, and the integration is classified as Local Push.

Current product comparisons describe the Air Monitor Lite as measuring PM2.5, CO2, temperature, and humidity. Qingping sells several similarly named products, so verify the exact model number rather than treating Air Monitor Lite, Air Monitor 2, and newer products as interchangeable.

The built-in display makes this device more useful away from a Home Assistant dashboard, while Bluetooth means the monitor itself does not need to join Wi-Fi. The limitation is coverage: walls, floors, interference, host placement, and the number of nearby Bluetooth devices can all affect reliability. A Bluetooth proxy may be necessary for a distant bedroom or outbuilding.

Setup: Confirm Bluetooth is working, place the monitor within range or deploy a proxy, then use Settings → Devices & services → Add Integration → Qingping. If it does not appear, test Bluetooth visibility and confirm that the device is the supported CGDN1 model.

Verdict: The best compact local option for a bedroom, office, or other room where a display and portability matter.

4. IKEA ALPSTUGA: best inexpensive Matter-over-Thread option

Buy it if: You already have a Thread Border Router and want to deploy several basic air-quality monitors at a low device cost.

IKEA ALPSTUGA measures CO2, particles/PM2.5, temperature, and humidity, and uses Matter over Thread. IKEA listed it at $34.99 in the U.S. during the research period. A USB-C cable and power adapter are sold separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ALPSTUGA is not simply a newer name for IKEA’s older products. It uses Matter over Thread, so Home Assistant needs Matter support and a functioning Thread Border Router. Commission the device into the Matter fabric, then confirm that its CO2, particle, temperature, and humidity entities appear. If commissioning fails, investigate the Thread network, IPv6 configuration, border-router health, controller fabric, and device reset state before assuming the sensor is defective.

Rank #4
SONOFF AirGuard SAWF-08P, Smart Indoor Air Quality Monitor, Matter Compatible, 2.4GHz WiFi, Carbon Dioxide/Temp/Humidity Monitor, Real-Time Display & Notification, for Indoor Use
  • [Matter Compatibility] As an Air Quality Meter that supports the Matter ecosystem, it can seamlessly integrate with various smart home platforms (including Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant).
  • [High Accuracy & Fast Response] With a built-in NDIR sensor, this Carbon Dioxide meter delivers ±(50ppm + 5%) accuracy across a range of 400-5000ppm. The continuous power supply ensures data updates every 5 seconds.
  • [All-in-One Air Quality Display] Monitor key environmental metrics at a glance—Carbon Dioxide, temperature, and humidity, all displayed together on one screen.
  • [Triple-Notice System for Air Quality] Get notified in three ways: via a sound notification, a multi-color LED indicator, and app notification. Customize all notices through the eWeLink app to activate when Carbon Dioxide, temperature, or humidity exceeds your defined thresholds. Perfect for indoor use.
  • [Year-Long Data Tracking & Export] Gain valuable insights into your indoor air trends with full access to 12 months of historical data. View clear, graphical charts directly in the app and export the data for deeper analysis or sharing, helping you make informed decisions about your home environment.

The low purchase price is excellent for room-by-room coverage, but it is not the total installation cost for someone who lacks Thread infrastructure. ALPSTUGA also has less sensor breadth than AirGradient or Apollo.

Do not confuse it with VINDSTYRKA, the older IKEA product with different connectivity and availability, or VINDRIKTNING, a separate low-cost sensor commonly discussed in DIY projects. VINDSTYRKA appeared with “Last chance to buy” language in one U.S. listing, so its availability should be checked by ZIP code at IKEA’s stock-availability page.

Verdict: The best budget choice when Thread infrastructure already exists; otherwise, the necessary networking hardware reduces the apparent savings.

5. Awair Element: best polished consumer monitor, with caveats

Buy it if: You already own Awair hardware or strongly prefer its consumer design and app experience.

Awair Element is described as measuring PM2.5, CO2, VOCs, temperature, and humidity. Home Assistant’s official Awair integration supports a local path where the specific device allows it. The local API is enabled through the Awair app, and Home Assistant polls locally every 30 seconds.

The alternative is cloud access. Cloud users must request an Awair API access token through the developer console; Home Assistant says obtaining it can take up to 24 hours. Under the documented default quota of 300 API calls per device per day, cloud data is summarized at five-minute intervals. That can be adequate for dashboards, but it is less suitable for rapid purifier or ventilation responses and remains dependent on internet access and vendor API policy.

Local support varies by device generation, so do not describe every Awair monitor as equally local. Home Assistant also notes that some first-generation devices with a “dust” sensor may expose identical PM2.5 and PM10 entities because the sensor cannot differentiate those particle ranges. Current official retail pricing was not verified, so Awair should not be presented as the best-value new purchase.

Verdict: A reasonable choice for existing owners and design-focused buyers, but AirGradient and Apollo are stronger new-buy recommendations for a local-first Home Assistant installation.

How quickly can these monitors drive automations?

Local operation generally reduces the time between a reading and a Home Assistant state change, but faster updates do not automatically mean better accuracy. The benefit is responsiveness: a purifier can react sooner to a cooking or smoke event, and a ventilation automation can respond sooner to a sustained CO2 rise.

  • AirGradient uses local polling through its official integration.
  • Apollo uses local ESPHome communication.
  • Qingping uses local Bluetooth push, subject to Bluetooth range and proxy reliability.
  • ALPSTUGA communicates through Matter over Thread, subject to the Thread and Matter fabric.
  • Awair’s local path polls every 30 seconds; its cloud path uses slower five-minute summaries under the documented default quota.

For practical automations, avoid acting on one anomalous reading. Use a sustained threshold, a time window, or a moving average. A sensor that updates quickly can still produce a poor automation if the rule reacts to a brief spike.

Useful Home Assistant automation patterns

Entity names vary by integration and firmware, so select the actual entities exposed by your device rather than copying names from another model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CO2 ventilation notification

Notify when CO2 remains above a configurable threshold for 10 minutes. This is a ventilation reminder, not a universal health rule. Combine it with occupancy detection where possible so an empty room does not generate unnecessary alerts.

PM2.5 purifier control

Turn on a purifier when PM2.5 remains above a chosen threshold for several minutes, and turn it off only after the reading has stayed below a lower threshold. The gap between the on and off thresholds prevents rapid cycling.

Ventilation with occupancy context

Increase ventilation when CO2 rises while the room is occupied. Add a minimum duration and an upper limit for the fan or HVAC action, and use appropriate professional controls for hard-wired equipment.

Humidity and condensation monitoring

Use humidity alongside temperature and, where available, surface-temperature sensors to identify condensation risk. Relative humidity alone cannot determine whether a particular wall or window will support condensation or mold.

Which monitor should you buy?

  • Best overall: AirGradient ONE.
  • Best local enthusiast value: Apollo AIR-1.
  • Best display and portability: Qingping Air Monitor Lite, if Bluetooth coverage is reliable.
  • Best low-cost Matter option: IKEA ALPSTUGA, if you already have a Thread Border Router.
  • Best consumer design: Awair Element, preferably through its local API where the specific model supports it.
  • Best privacy: AirGradient ONE or Apollo AIR-1.
  • Best multi-room deployment: ALPSTUGA with existing Thread infrastructure, or Qingping with adequate Bluetooth coverage.
  • Best for radon: A dedicated radon monitor rather than any of these general-purpose monitors.

Alternatives and exclusions

Airthings View Plus is worth considering when radon is central. Airthings lists it as a seven-sensor product at $329.99, but it should be evaluated as a radon-focused and broader IAQ device rather than as the best Home Assistant-first value.

DIY ESPHome builds can be cheaper and highly customizable, but they require assembly, enclosure work, calibration judgment, and ongoing maintenance. Outdoor monitors should not replace indoor measurements; AirGradient offers a separate outdoor product and Home Assistant integration.

Finally, no general IAQ monitor replaces a dedicated carbon-monoxide alarm, a radon detector where appropriate, or professional investigation of a suspected building problem. These devices help reveal trends and support automation; they do not certify that a building is safe or diagnose harmful exposure.
