Farnam Street is westbound-only from Turner Boulevard to 40th Street, while utility, track, rail-delivery and signal work restricts Farnam, Harney, 16th, 24th and nearby intersections. Outside downtown, drivers should plan for restrictions on Fort Crook Road, I Street, 156th Street, I-80, 120th Street, Capehart Road and the South Sarpy Expressway. Council Bluffs has separate bridge, roadway, trail and intersection closures.

Omaha streetcar corridor: the main source of closures
Streetcar construction affects the route from downtown through Midtown and Blackstone. Restrictions vary by block and may change as crews move rail, weld track, replace utilities or install poles and signals.
Farnam Street and Turner Boulevard
- Utility work at the Turner Boulevard intersections with Farnam and Harney is expected to continue through fall 2026.
- Farnam Street remains westbound-only between Turner Boulevard and 40th Street.
- Mainline track work blocks the north lane of Farnam and street parking from 31st to 39th Streets. That north-side phase is expected to finish in early 2027; work then moves to the south lanes for eastbound tracks and stops.
- Farnam will close temporarily between 38th Street and 38th Avenue for monitoring equipment. The planned closure lasts about four hours after the morning rush.
- Utility investigation and overhead-pole foundation work on the south side of Farnam between 39th and 40th Streets is scheduled through Tuesday, October 20. The westbound travel lane is to remain open.
- Through Friday, October 16, rail movement uses rolling closures on Farnam between the 40th Street laydown area and a new area west of Park Avenue, approximately 3–6 a.m. Additional rolling closures are expected the following week.
- The south lane of Farnam between 29th Street and Turner Boulevard is closed for rail delivery, welding and laydown space. Rail welding and overnight Park Avenue closures are expected in late October.
Farnam Bridge and nearby utilities
Farnam Bridge work is nearly complete, and traffic is open in all directions. Northbound I-480 is expected to shift to permanent lanes in late October. Utility replacement on Farnam between 24th and 27th Streets continues through year-end.

How to plan a trip through the work zones
- Choose a route around the streetcar core. Do not assume Farnam, Harney or 16th Street will be passable from one end of downtown to the other.
- Use the posted westbound Douglas alternatives. Take 8th Street to Harney or Riverfront Drive to Abbott Drive while the temporary Douglas configuration is closed.
- Allow for moving restrictions. Rolling rail closures, overnight welding and temporary monitoring work can change access during a single day.
- Separate vehicle and pedestrian planning. A vehicle closure does not necessarily mean every sidewalk is closed; the west-side crossing at Harney and 16th remains available for Orpheum patrons, while other blocks use intermittent pedestrian detours.
- Verify uncertain projects before leaving. Fort Crook Road, I Street, 156th Street and 2nd Avenue have no firm reopening date, an unknown end date or explicitly changing access.
What the dates mean
“Scheduled” dates identify a planned closure or completion window, not a guarantee. “Expected,” “projected” and “anticipated” dates can move with field conditions. I-80 overnight work is weather-dependent, and several projects have no stated reopening date. Treat October 15 information as a snapshot and check current signs, barricades and local traffic updates immediately before traveling.
