In the United States, the main documented health danger associated with deer mice is exposure to hantavirus, including the virus most commonly linked to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Deer mice are not all infected, and contact with a mouse does not automatically cause illness. The practical priority is to prevent rodent entry and avoid stirring up urine, droppings, or nesting material.
What disease can deer mice spread?
Deer mice can spread hantaviruses through infected urine, droppings, saliva, or nesting material. The CDC identifies the deer mouse as the source of the most common hantavirus that causes HPS in the United States. HPS affects the lungs and can become life-threatening.

Deer mice are not the only rodents that can spread HPS-causing hantaviruses in North America. Nor does the species name mean every deer mouse carries the virus: the CDC notes that it is difficult to tell by looking whether a wild rodent is infected.
How can exposure happen?
One important route is breathing in virus-containing particles when contaminated material is disturbed. Fresh urine, droppings, or nesting material can release virus into the air when stirred up. Material can also enter the body through a cut or through the eyes, nose, or mouth. Bites and scratches are possible but rare routes, according to the CDC’s overview of hantavirus.

People cleaning areas with rodent activity—including workers and animal caretakers—can face greater exposure risk. This makes safe cleanup relevant at job sites, in garages and outbuildings, and wherever rodents have nested.
What are the symptoms of HPS, and when should you seek care?
HPS symptoms usually begin 1 to 8 weeks after exposure. Early symptoms can resemble influenza and include fatigue, fever, and muscle aches; headache, dizziness, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may also occur. Later, coughing and shortness of breath can develop as fluid fills the lungs. The CDC advises prompt medical attention when compatible illness follows possible rodent exposure.

Tell a medical professional about the possible rodent exposure and when it occurred. Hantavirus can be difficult to diagnose very early because initial symptoms resemble other illnesses; testing and diagnosis are decisions for clinicians, not something to determine at home. The CDC’s clinician guidance describes assessment and testing considerations.

HPS is serious: the CDC reports that 38% of people who develop respiratory symptoms may die from it. That figure refers to people who develop respiratory symptoms—not everyone exposed to rodents, or everyone who may have encountered hantavirus.

How can you reduce the risk around a home or worksite?
The CDC’s prevention guidance recommends reducing rodent contact through a combination of exclusion, trapping, and food control. In practical terms:
- Block entry: Seal holes and gaps in homes, garages, and other buildings where rodents could get in.
- Reduce food access: Remove food rodents can easily reach, including accessible food in work and storage areas.
- Control activity: Use traps to reduce infestation. A household snap trap is one option for ordinary rodent control, but trapping alone does not prevent exposure or replace safe cleanup.
- Use extra care where activity is substantial: Workers, animal caretakers, and anyone dealing with a heavy infestation should follow the precautions appropriate to the setting.
These measures follow the CDC’s hantavirus prevention recommendations, which state: “Avoiding exposure to rodents and their urine and feces is the best way to prevent infection.”

How should you clean up mouse droppings or nesting material?
Do not dry sweep or vacuum rodent droppings or nests: disturbing contaminated material can put particles into the air. Use the CDC’s safe-cleanup instructions for the specific situation. The right precautions depend on factors such as the amount of rodent activity and the place being cleaned; a heavy infestation calls for particular care, so do not treat it like a routine small cleanup.

For construction and maintenance work, include rodent activity in the site’s safety planning before disturbing a space. If the scope is persistent or difficult to clean safely, seek help from a qualified local pest-control or rodent-exclusion professional rather than improvising a cleanup approach.

Does hantavirus spread from person to person?
Hantaviruses are spread mainly by rodents, and ordinary contact with someone who has HPS is not the usual route of infection in the United States. The Andes virus, associated with South America, is the known hantavirus exception that can spread person to person, according to the CDC.
