The 9 Best Fire Pits, Based on Extensive Comparative Testing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most people, the Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 is the best all-around wood-burning fire pit. Choose the Solo Stove Yukon 2.0 for a larger group, the Outland Living Mega for propane convenience, the TIKI Brand Reunion for a group-ready accessory package, or the Breeo X Series X24 for heavier construction and live-fire cooking.

This is a research-based buying guide, not a claim of personal testing by this site. Performance observations are attributed to OutdoorGearLab’s comparative testing; dimensions, materials, included accessories, fuel guidance, and manufacturer claims come from the respective brands. Treat smokeless as low-smoke under good conditions, verify the exact model and bundle before buying, and check local fire rules before lighting any pit.

Quick verdict

Fire pit Best for Fuel Main reason to choose it Main compromise
Solo Stove Yukon 2.0 Large groups Wood High heat, large capacity, and strong smoke management Too large and heavy for frequent transport
Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 Most buyers and portability Wood The strongest balance of heat, low smoke, ignition, cleanup, and portability Expensive and more upward than outward heat
Outland Living Mega Propane convenience Propane Fast ignition, adjustable flame, and no ash cleanup Less traditional ambiance and model-specific certification details
TIKI Brand Reunion Smokeless Fire Pit Large gatherings with included accessories Wood Stand, cover, starter, and ash pan are part of the package Heavy, and TIKI says it is not CSA or ULC certified
Solo Stove Summit 24 Premium large-format Solo Stove alternative Verify exact configuration Larger format for buyers who want Solo Stove’s airflow approach Fuel system and bundle details require careful verification
East Oak Smokeless Value-oriented buyers Wood A lower-cost route into secondary-combustion design Exact model, warranty, and availability need checking
Cuisinart Cleanburn Mainstream-brand alternative Verify exact model An accessible option from a familiar outdoor-cooking brand Specifications and included accessories vary by model
GVDV Smokeless Budget category Wood Potentially lower purchase cost Less certain long-term support and accessory ecosystem
Breeo X Series X24 Durability and cooking Wood Heavy-duty materials, year-round outdoor suitability, and cooking accessories Heavy and less portable than the Bonfire

The ranking is not universal. A fire pit for two people on a small patio has different requirements from one intended for six or more people in a permanent backyard setting. The best choice also depends on whether wood fires are allowed where you live, how much outward heat you want, what surface the pit will sit on, and whether you need to move it after every use.

1. Solo Stove Yukon 2.0: Best large wood-burning fire pit

Choose the Solo Stove Yukon 2.0 when you want a large, hot wood fire for a permanent backyard location. OutdoorGearLab ranked the Yukon 2.0 first in its current fire-pit comparison, reporting excellent heat output, unusually effective smoke management, and burns of up to roughly 70 minutes with three medium logs in its testing.

Solo Stove describes the Yukon as a 27-inch fire pit intended for six or more people. That capacity is its defining advantage: it can hold a larger fire than compact pits and is better suited to a group gathered around a backyard patio. OutdoorGearLab also reported high infrared readings and broad heat dispersion, although actual warmth depends on fuel, wind, seating distance, and how strongly the fire is burning.

The trade-off is size. The Yukon is a backyard fixture rather than a pit most owners will casually carry to a campsite. Solo Stove sells or supports accessories including stands, lids, shields, shelters, and heat-management products, but bundle contents can change. Confirm what is included with the exact listing rather than assuming that every Yukon package contains the same accessories.

Best fit: six or more people, a dedicated outdoor area, and buyers who value fire size and heat over portability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider something else if: you have a small deck, need to transport the pit regularly, or usually host only two to four people.

2. Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0: Best overall and best portable wood-burning option

For most buyers, the Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 is the best all-around fire pit. OutdoorGearLab found it to be one of the strongest combinations of heat, smoke control, ease of ignition, portability, burn time, and cleanup. It also performed particularly well with less-than-ideal wood in that comparison, though dry, split hardwood remains the better choice for any wood-burning pit.

The Bonfire’s 19.5-inch format is large enough for a typical gathering but substantially easier to relocate than the Yukon or Breeo X24. Solo Stove lists it for approximately four to six people and uses a stainless-steel body. OutdoorGearLab lists the tested unit at approximately 21 pounds and 19.5 by 19.5 by 14 inches; nearby current bundle configurations may differ slightly, so use the dimensions and weight of the package you are actually purchasing.

The removable ash pan is a meaningful advantage. Instead of leaving a layer of ash inside the burn chamber, the owner can remove the pan after the fire has completely cooled and clean it separately. That does not eliminate the need for safe ash handling, and it does not make the pit safe to touch or empty while warm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bonfire’s limitations are equally important. OutdoorGearLab noted that outward heat dispersion was not as strong as desired compared with some wider designs; much of the heat from a tall, efficient cylinder travels upward. The Bonfire is also a premium-priced option, and Solo Stove says its stand is needed for safe burning on surfaces such as decks. Wood and composite decking do not have identical heat tolerance, so do not treat a stand as a substitute for checking the surface and the manufacturer’s clearance guidance.

Best fit: buyers who want one versatile wood-burning pit for a patio, backyard, occasional travel, or gatherings of roughly four to six people.

Consider the Yukon instead if: you routinely host larger groups or want more fire and heat than a portable cylinder can provide.

3. Outland Living Mega: Best propane fire pit

Choose the Outland Living Mega if quick, controlled outdoor warmth matters more than a traditional wood fire. OutdoorGearLab identified the Mega as a leading propane-fed option. Propane provides rapid ignition, adjustable flame control, and no ash to remove, making it appealing for patios and for owners who do not want to store, split, or carry firewood.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A propane fire pit is not a smokeless version of a wood campfire. It produces a different flame pattern and atmosphere, needs a propane tank and the correct hose and regulator arrangement, and does not provide the same crackle or ember experience. It may nevertheless be the more practical choice where wood smoke is a nuisance or where a clean, repeatable flame is preferred.

Outland sells multiple firebowl and fire-table products under similar naming. Before purchasing, verify the exact Mega model, BTU rating, certification or listing, hose configuration, tank requirements, dimensions, and current retailer support. Follow the model-specific manual for placement and tank clearance. Local outdoor-heating rules, fire restrictions, and HOA requirements still apply; propane does not automatically make a fire feature legal during a burn ban.

4. TIKI Brand Reunion Smokeless Fire Pit: Best group package with included accessories

The TIKI Reunion Smokeless Fire Pit is a strong choice for a large gathering when included equipment matters. TIKI positions the Reunion as its largest smokeless fire pit for groups of six to eight. Its official product information lists a removable ash pan, stand, weather-resistant cover, starter, a 27.5-inch footprint, and a weight of about 60.7 pounds.

TIKI states that the Reunion has a four-foot heat radius and can burn natural cut firewood or TIKI wood packs. That heat-radius figure is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent measurement, so use it as a rough planning reference rather than a guarantee of warmth at every seat. Wind, seating position, fuel quality, and ambient temperature will change the experience.

The included stand and cover make the package more complete than a bare fire bowl, while the ash pan simplifies cooled-fire cleanup. The weight also makes clear that this is primarily a backyard product, not a portable one.

One certification detail deserves specific attention: TIKI’s published product Q&A says the Reunion is not CSA approved or ULC certified. Certification requirements vary by location and by product category, so buyers who need a particular listing should check local code officials and the current product documentation before ordering. TIKI also says the pit must be used outdoors, away from structures and overhangs, and that local solid-fuel restrictions may apply. Its stated clearance of at least 15 feet from walls, structures, buildings, or combustible materials may be more demanding than general guidance elsewhere; use the greater applicable clearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: a fixed backyard setup for six to eight people where a cover, stand, starter, and ash pan are valuable.

5. Solo Stove Summit 24: Best premium large-format Solo Stove alternative

The Solo Stove Summit 24 is worth considering when you want a larger premium-format Solo Stove than the Bonfire. OutdoorGearLab included the Summit 24 in its current comparison, while Solo Stove support material identifies it as a 24-inch-class model intended for approximately five to seven people.

The Summit is best understood as a capacity and format decision rather than a direct Bonfire replacement. It targets buyers who want more room for fuel and more presence around a larger seating area without choosing the Yukon. Its larger footprint can make it more suitable for a permanent backyard installation, but it also reduces portability and increases the importance of surface protection and clearance planning.

Verify the exact fuel system before buying. Solo Stove’s current lineup includes wood, gel, and propane-related products with similar family naming, and the Summit name should not be assumed to describe one identical configuration across every listing. Check fuel requirements, included stand or base, lid, screen, warranty, dimensions, and accessories for the precise model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: buyers who want premium construction and a larger group capacity, but who are comparing within the Summit family rather than simply buying the most portable Solo Stove.

6. East Oak Smokeless: Best value-oriented tested alternative

East Oak’s Smokeless model is a sensible value-category candidate for buyers who want secondary-combustion design without immediately paying premium-brand prices. OutdoorGearLab included an East Oak Smokeless model in its current comparison, which makes it more useful to consider than an untested marketplace listing.

The recommendation needs a narrower qualification than the Bonfire or Yukon recommendations. East Oak sells products with changing names and configurations, so match the current listing to the exact model used in the comparison. Verify dimensions, steel type, included stand or lid, warranty terms, retailer support, and replacement-accessory availability before treating it as a long-term bargain.

There is not enough evidence in this dossier to promise exceptional durability, a specific heat output, complete smoke elimination, or a particular level of after-sales service. Its appeal is value-oriented design and tested inclusion, not an unsupported claim that it will outlast better-established premium alternatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: buyers willing to confirm the current model carefully and accept more uncertainty in exchange for a potentially lower purchase price.

7. Cuisinart Cleanburn: Best accessible mainstream-brand alternative

The Cuisinart Cleanburn is a useful alternative for buyers who prefer a familiar outdoor-cooking brand. OutdoorGearLab included a Cuisinart Cleanburn model in its tested lineup. That gives the category a place in this guide without extending the recommendation to every Cuisinart fire pit.

Check the exact Cleanburn model for dimensions, fuel type, included stand or screen, warranty, and current availability. Product names can cover multiple sizes or generations, and the presence of a familiar brand name does not guarantee that two differently sized models perform the same way.

Choose it when accessible retail support and a mainstream brand are more important than having the strongest documented combination of portability, smoke management, and cleanup. Compare the actual package against the Bonfire rather than assuming the word Cleanburn means identical low-smoke performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. GVDV Smokeless: Best budget-category candidate

GVDV Smokeless belongs on the shortlist for budget shoppers, but it should be approached as a candidate rather than a no-qualification bargain. OutdoorGearLab included a GVDV Smokeless model among the tested products, giving budget-conscious buyers a data-backed model to investigate.

Confirm the exact model name, dimensions, material, current retailer listing, warranty, and accessory fit immediately before purchase. Lower-priced pits can have less established warranty support, thinner materials, less consistent fit and finish, and fewer compatible accessories than premium brands. None of those possibilities should be treated as a defect in every GVDV unit, but they are reasons to inspect the product documentation and seller policy closely.

Do not infer safety certification, year-round durability, or stronger heat output from the Smokeless label alone. As with every wood-burning pit, smoke reduction depends on airflow, a hot established fire, dry fuel, weather, and proper loading.

Best fit: a buyer whose first priority is keeping the purchase cost down and who is prepared to verify support and specifications.

9. Breeo X Series X24: Best heavy-duty alternative and best for cooking

Choose the Breeo X24 when long-term backyard durability and live-fire cooking matter more than low weight. Breeo describes the X Series as being made in the United States from 304 stainless steel and corten steel. Its X Airflow design uses double-wall construction and secondary-combustion holes, and the product family is compatible with live-fire cooking accessories.

The X24 is a 27.5-inch model that Breeo identifies as its bestseller for most spaces. OutdoorGearLab described it as especially durable and suitable for remaining outdoors year-round. That makes it a compelling alternative to the lighter Bonfire for a homeowner who wants a substantial backyard fixture and may eventually add cooking accessories.

The cost of that durability is portability. The X24 is heavier and less convenient to move than the Bonfire, so it should be placed with its final location in mind. Corten steel can develop a weathered appearance, and the exact care requirements, surface effects, and accessory compatibility should be checked in Breeo’s current documentation.

Best fit: permanent backyard use, buyers who value robust construction, and anyone interested in cooking over a live fire.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Bonfire instead if: you need to carry the pit, store it seasonally, or move it between locations regularly.

What smokeless really means

Smokeless fire pits do not eliminate smoke. They are designed to burn wood more completely by introducing additional oxygen and burning some of the gases that would otherwise leave as visible smoke. In practice, the lowest smoke usually occurs after the fire has established a hot, vigorous burn.

OutdoorGearLab’s Bonfire testing found the least smoke after the fire reached a strong burn and reported that it handled wetter or less-seasoned wood better than competing models in that test. That should not be read as permission to burn wet wood. Manufacturer instructions generally recommend dry, split hardwood, and damp fuel can cause smoke, poor ignition, soot, and reduced heat in any design.

Expect more smoke during startup, when the pit is overloaded, when the wood is wet or poorly seasoned, when wind disrupts airflow, and while the fire is dying down. A screen or shield helps control sparks, but it does not convert a wood fire into a smoke-free appliance.

How to choose between the finalists

Wood or propane?

Choose wood for the traditional campfire experience, larger flames, crackle, and the possibility of cooking over a live fire. Accept the work of obtaining dry fuel, managing smoke and sparks, cleaning ash, and complying with solid-fuel restrictions.

Choose propane for quick ignition, adjustable flame control, and no ash cleanup. Accept the need for a compatible tank, hose, and regulator, plus a different ambiance and model-specific placement requirements. The Outland Living Mega is the leading propane choice in this comparison, but confirm the exact variant and local rules.

How large should the pit be?

Use the manufacturer’s people estimate only as a starting point. A 19.5-inch Bonfire is aimed at roughly four to six people, the 27-inch Yukon at six or more, TIKI positions the Reunion for six to eight, Solo Stove describes the Summit 24 for approximately five to seven, and the Breeo X24 is a 27.5-inch large-format option. Seating distance, wind, and desired heat often matter as much as the number of seats.

A larger pit generally accepts more fuel and can radiate heat farther, but a tall low-smoke cylinder may send a greater share of its heat upward. OutdoorGearLab reported broad heat dispersion for the Yukon, while its Bonfire review found the Bonfire’s outward heat less impressive than desired. A larger diameter is not a guarantee that every person around a wide circle will feel equally warm.

Will you move it?

The Bonfire is the clearest portable choice among the large-format wood burners. The Yukon, TIKI Reunion, Breeo X24, and similar large models are better treated as backyard fixtures. Before choosing a heavy model, plan the route from storage to the fire area, including steps, gates, wet ground, and whether two people will be needed to move it safely.

How much cleanup can you tolerate?

Removable ash pans make cleanup easier, particularly on the Bonfire 2.0 and TIKI Reunion. They do not remove the need to wait for a complete cooldown. A fitted lid or cover protects a stored pit from weather, but it should never be installed over a hot or smoldering fire.

What surface will support it?

Concrete, masonry, gravel, and purpose-built noncombustible areas are generally easier starting points than wood or composite decking, but the manufacturer’s surface and clearance instructions control. A fire pit stand or fireproof fire pit mat can reduce heat transfer, but neither should be treated as a blanket authorization to use a pit on any combustible surface. Solo Stove specifically warns that its stand is needed for safe burning on surfaces such as decks.

Fuel, accessories, and setup details that affect performance

Use the right wood

Dry, split hardwood is the dependable starting point for lower smoke and easier ignition. Keep pieces sized for the specific burn chamber, avoid packing the pit above the manufacturer’s limit, and allow enough airflow for secondary combustion. If local delivery is available, seasoned hardwood firewood or branded wood packs can be more useful than buying the cheapest damp fuel, but availability and quality vary by region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for sparks and heat

A fire pit spark screen or model-specific shield is worthwhile for wood fires, particularly when people, furniture, or dry vegetation are nearby. It does not replace the required clearance or active supervision. Heat deflectors can redirect warmth outward, but they change the appliance’s heat pattern and may have strict compatibility and clearance requirements. Buy a fire pit heat deflector only after confirming that it is designed for the exact diameter and model.

Make tending and ash removal safer

A fire pit poker and ash tool can help position logs and remove cooled ash without reaching into the burn chamber. Do not empty ashes while they are hot. Follow the manufacturer’s cooldown procedure, then place fully cooled ashes in a metal container with a lid, kept away from combustible materials. Never assume a pit is safe simply because no flames are visible; embers can remain hot beneath ash.

Protect the pit when it is not in use

A fitted cover or weather-resistant shelter can reduce exposure to rain and debris, but only use it after the fire is completely out and the pit is cold. Covers, lids, stands, shields, cooking grates, and ash pans are often model-specific. Confirm diameter, support points, and fuel configuration before buying an accessory from a different product family.

Fire-pit safety and legal checks

Before choosing a model, check the rules that apply to the actual property. Municipal or county fire codes, air-quality restrictions, wildfire conditions, temporary burn bans, and HOA rules may be stricter than the product manual. Solid-fuel restrictions can affect the Yukon, Bonfire, TIKI, Breeo, and other wood burners even when a retailer lists them as suitable for outdoor use. Propane models are not automatically exempt from local outdoor-heating or fire restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The U.S. Fire Administration recommends using fire pits outdoors at least 10 feet from a home or anything that can burn, closely supervising children, using a metal screen over wood fires, and fully extinguishing the fire before leaving. Its fire-safety pictograph advises keeping fire pits, wood piles, and propane tanks 10 to 30 feet from the home. TIKI’s Reunion guidance calls for at least 15 feet from walls, structures, buildings, or combustible materials. Because guidance varies, use the greater clearance required by the manufacturer, local code, or fire authority.

  • Use the pit only outdoors, in an open area away from roofs, branches, walls, fences, and combustible overhangs.
  • Set it on a stable, level surface and keep furniture, firewood, decorations, and dry vegetation outside the required clearance.
  • Use a metal spark screen or shield when the manufacturer permits or recommends it for a wood fire.
  • Keep children and pets supervised and establish a clear no-go zone around the pit.
  • For propane, inspect the tank, hose, and regulator and follow the exact model manual for connection, storage, and clearance.
  • Never leave a lit or smoldering fire unattended, and never cover or move a hot pit.
  • Extinguish the fire completely before leaving. Dispose of ash only after it is fully cold in a lidded metal container.

If you are designing a patio around a portable fire pit, leave the required open clearance in the layout. Do not recess a portable pit into masonry, place it beneath a roof, or build a tight surround unless the manufacturer specifically approves that installation. A decorative hardscape does not override combustion, heat-transfer, ventilation, or access requirements.

What to verify before ordering

  1. Exact model: Match the product name, size, generation, and fuel system to the current manufacturer listing. This is particularly important for Outland Mega, Solo Stove Summit, East Oak, Cuisinart Cleanburn, and GVDV products.
  2. Package contents: Confirm whether a stand, lid, cover, shield, starter, ash pan, or cooking accessory is included or sold separately.
  3. Dimensions and weight: Use the current configuration’s measurements when planning storage, delivery, patio clearance, and movement.
  4. Certification: If your building department, insurer, HOA, or local code requires a certification, verify the exact product’s current documentation. TIKI’s published Q&A says the Reunion is not CSA approved or ULC certified.
  5. Fuel and restrictions: Check whether wood or propane is permitted on the property and whether seasonal air-quality or wildfire restrictions are active.
  6. Surface and clearance: Read the manual for deck use, stands, heat shields, overhangs, and minimum distances. Use the most restrictive applicable rule.
  7. After-sale support: Check warranty terms, replacement pans, covers, screens, and other model-specific accessories before choosing a lower-cost alternative.

Testing and attribution notes

The comparative performance claims in this guide come from OutdoorGearLab’s current fire-pit comparison, including its observations of heat, smoke management, portability, ignition, burn time, and cleanup. Manufacturer pages are used for specifications, intended group size, materials, included accessories, fuel compatibility, claimed heat radius, and safety guidance. The article does not claim that this site’s writers personally tested or owned these products.

Product rankings can change as manufacturers revise models, bundles, prices, certification status, and accessory compatibility. Recheck current stock, specifications, certification, and retailer support before publication or purchase, especially for the East Oak, Cuisinart, GVDV, Outland, and Solo Stove Summit entries.

Are smokeless fire pits completely smoke-free?

No. Smokeless fire pits are better described as low-smoke designs. Smoke is usually lowest after a hot fire is established with dry, split wood. Startup, damp fuel, overloading, wind, and the dying-down stage can all produce visible smoke.

Can I use one of these fire pits on a wood or composite deck?

Only if the manufacturer permits that installation and the required stand, mat, and clearances are followed. Solo Stove specifically says its stand is needed for safe burning on surfaces such as decks. Check the exact surface guidance, keep the required distance from combustible materials, and do not assume a mat makes every deck safe.

Which fire pit is best for six or more people?

The Solo Stove Yukon 2.0 is the strongest large-group wood-burning choice. The TIKI Reunion is also designed for groups of six to eight and includes a stand, cover, starter, and ash pan. The Breeo X24 is another large, durable option, particularly if cooking matters.

Is propane better than wood for a fire pit?

Neither is universally better. Propane is quicker, adjustable, and produces no ash, while wood provides a more traditional campfire experience and can support live-fire cooking. Propane still requires correct tank and hose setup and may be subject to local outdoor-heating restrictions.

How should fire-pit ashes be disposed of?

Wait until the fire and embers are completely cold, follow the manufacturer’s cooldown instructions, and place the ashes in a metal container with a lid away from combustible materials. Never handle or discard ashes while they may still contain hot embers.

The Bottom Line

Buy the Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0 for the best balance of portability, smoke management, heat, and cleanup. Step up to the Solo Stove Yukon 2.0 for a larger group, choose the Outland Living Mega when propane convenience is the priority, select the TIKI Reunion for its included group-use accessories, or choose the Breeo X24 for heavy-duty backyard use and cooking potential. Whichever model you choose, verify the exact configuration, protect the supporting surface, maintain the required clearance, and check local restrictions before lighting it.
