The machine was FoldiMate, a laundry-folding prototype demonstrated around CES 2017—not a currently available $800 household robot. It promised to fold selected garments using rollers and folding arms, but users still had to sort, position, and feed clothes into the machine. The company never became a lasting consumer-appliance business, and there is no verified official FoldiMate sales or support channel today.
What the $800 headline was really about
The headline referred to FoldiMate, a Silicon Valley startup’s proposed laundry-folding appliance. Contemporary coverage associated the product with an advertised or projected price of about $800 and a CES 2017 demonstration.

That price needs an important qualification. It was a target or announced figure—not proof that consumers could walk into a store, pay $800, and receive a finished, supported appliance. The available evidence does not establish that the price included shipping, tax, installation, accessories, or long-term support. Nor does it establish reliable mass-market delivery at that price.

How FoldiMate was supposed to work
The intended workflow was roughly:
- Remove clothing from the dryer and sort it.
- Place one garment on the machine’s input area.
- Attach or position the garment using clips, hooks, or the machine’s loading points.
- Let rollers and folding mechanisms draw the garment inward.
- Collect the folded item from the output stack.
Product descriptions and contemporary reports described rollers, arms, and other mechanisms designed to straighten and fold garments. Reported claims suggested that a basket or full wash could be processed in roughly three to four minutes, but that was a company or product claim rather than an independently measured household test.
What it could—and could not—fold
FoldiMate’s strongest use cases were reportedly shirts, tops, pants, dresses, and similar medium-sized garments. The exact range could vary between prototype versions, so the machine should not be treated as having a universal garment specification.

That distinction matters because a normal household laundry load contains far more than ideal shirts. Socks, underwear, towels, bedding, children’s clothing, tangled items, inside-out garments, and unusually shaped pieces would still need human attention.

Was it really a robot?
FoldiMate used robotic mechanisms, but calling it an autonomous domestic robot is misleading. It could not independently identify a mixed pile, pick garments off the floor, turn clothes right-side out, sort items by person, or put them away.

A more accurate description is a freestanding garment-folding appliance with automated mechanisms and substantial human loading. The machine automated repeated folding movements after a person had already prepared each garment.
The hidden manual labor
The meaningful comparison was not “FoldiMate versus doing nothing.” It was FoldiMate versus manually folding a sorted pile after washing and drying it.
A realistic workflow could still include:
- Moving laundry from the dryer to a sorting area.
- Separating supported garments from socks, underwear, sheets, towels, and other exceptions.
- Smoothing and orienting each item.
- Attaching or positioning each garment correctly.
- Starting the folding cycle and monitoring for errors.
- Removing the finished item.
- Manually folding unsupported garments.
- Putting the completed laundry away.
The machine could potentially reduce repetitive folding motions and create consistent stacks. It did not eliminate the handling, sorting, loading, unloading, and storage steps around folding. No independent time-and-motion test establishes how much total household time it would have saved.
Why laundry folding is such a difficult robotics problem
Clothing is not a rigid object with a predictable shape. Fabric can be twisted, inside-out, tangled, partially hidden, slippery, stretchy, thick, thin, or overlapping another garment. Sleeves and trouser legs hang unpredictably, and the desired fold varies by garment type and household preference.

A system that works reliably must perceive the garment, identify its edges, grip it without snagging or stretching it, determine its orientation, and manipulate it into a repeatable shape. Small garments are especially difficult to grasp. Sheets and other large items introduce a different scale of problem.
FoldiMate’s requirement that a person present garments in a controlled way was therefore not a minor inconvenience. It was a practical workaround for the hardest parts of fabric perception and manipulation.
What happened to FoldiMate?
FoldiMate gained attention through prototypes and trade-show demonstrations, then continued to appear in product-development coverage as the company revised its design and pursued consumer availability. Those milestones should not be confused with a shipped, supported appliance.
- 2016: The product gained attention through early demonstrations and coverage.
- January 8, 2017: ExtremeTech published the article associated with the $800 headline and CES 2017 context.
- 2017–2019: Product development and revised designs continued, according to secondary historical reporting.
- 2021: The secondary product history identifies the company as having ceased operations.
- Today: There is no verified official FoldiMate sales listing, current warranty, or support channel established by the available evidence.
The safest conclusion is that FoldiMate was a discontinued or failed product project, not a current $800 appliance. Private resale claims, if encountered, would need to be evaluated separately and would not provide the original company’s support or parts network.

Why the product never became a normal appliance
The exact cause of the company’s failure should not be reduced to one unsupported explanation. However, the product faced the familiar challenges of consumer robotics: difficult fabric manipulation, narrow garment coverage, demanding user preparation, manufacturing complexity, uncertain reliability, and the need to provide repairs and support over many years.
A trade-show demonstration can show that a machine folds selected garments under controlled conditions. A viable household appliance must also handle ordinary mixed laundry, survive repeated use, fit into homes, ship economically, meet safety and reliability expectations, and remain serviceable after the startup’s publicity cycle ends.

Manual folding boards
A folding board can produce consistent shirt folds at low cost and takes little storage space. It does not automate the chore, but it may solve the narrower problem of inconsistent folding without adding a large appliance.

A laundry service removes substantially more folding labor than FoldiMate was designed to remove. The trade-offs are recurring cost, pickup or transportation logistics, and preferences about detergents, garment separation, and handling.

Housekeeping help
A housekeeper or personal assistant can sort, fold, hang, and put clothing away while also handling exceptions. That broader coverage costs more over time, but it is closer to what the original headline’s “housekeeper” comparison implied.
A better laundry workflow
For many households, the most practical alternative is procedural rather than robotic:
- Fold clothes directly from the dryer while they are less wrinkled.
- Use separate hampers for different people or garment categories.
- Hang wrinkle-prone garments immediately.
- Use a folding surface at a comfortable height.
- Keep dedicated bins for socks and undergarments.
- Fold only items that benefit from being stacked.
Commercial laundry carts can also improve sorting and transport, but they are workflow equipment—not folding robots. For example, National Hospitality Supply sells housekeeping and laundry carts for commercial use; such products do not replace the folding function FoldiMate promised.

Before treating a new product as a housekeeper substitute, ask:
- Does it pick garments up from a pile?
- Can it identify clothing type and orientation?
- Does it handle socks, underwear, towels, sheets, delicates, and children’s clothing?
- Does its advertised speed include sorting, loading, clipping, unloading, and failed attempts?
- What happens when a garment is tangled, inside-out, slippery, or incorrectly positioned?
- Who provides repairs, replacement parts, software support, and warranty service?
- Is the quoted price for a shipped product or merely a prototype target?
The most important measurement is not how quickly the machine folds an ideal shirt. It is how much human handling is required per normal mixed load and how often that workflow breaks down.
Final verdict
FoldiMate was a compelling demonstration of a difficult robotics problem. The $800 figure described a reported target or announced price, not a dependable current retail product. The machine was intended to fold selected garments after a person carefully loaded them, while small items, large sheets, and other exceptions remained problematic.
If you are looking for a FoldiMate today, do not treat the old headline as a buying guide. The product is historical, its company is no longer operating according to secondary reference material, and there is no verified official sales or support channel to rely on.
