The 6 Best Robot Vacuums The Spruce Has Tested (2026)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best overall: The Narwal Freo Pro is The Spruce’s top tested robot vacuum-mop for its combination of effective everyday cleaning, quiet operation, object avoidance, and an automated self-cleaning dock. It is not perfect: there is no spot-cleaning mode, it struggled with a small pile of cereal, and its clean- and dirty-water tanks still need regular attention.

The other five picks target different priorities. The Roomba 105 Combo is the easiest starting point, the Roomba Combo 10 Max is the premium Roomba, the Roborock Saros 10R is the best upgrade, the Narwal Flow 2 has the deepest feature set, and the Shark PowerDetect 2-in-1 offers the best mid-range balance. This guide is based on The Spruce’s roundup updated May 28, 2026, which reported testing more than 40 robot vacuums. Quick comparison

All six picks are robot vacuum-mop combinations with mapping and self-emptying in The Spruce’s comparison details. The meaningful differences are cleaning behavior, dock maintenance, noise, app quality, obstacle avoidance, and which dock configuration you actually receive.

1. Narwal Freo Pro: best overall

The Narwal Freo Pro Robot Vacuum and Mop is The Spruce’s best overall choice because it combines dependable everyday cleaning with a quiet, highly automated dock. ROPVACNIC Robot Vacuum and Mop Combo 5200Pa Suction Robotic Cleaner | Self-charging, app control, personalized cleaning adjustments, advanced obstacle avoidance, suitable for home use
  • 【2-in-1 Mopping and Vacuuming】 The ROPVACNIC Robot S1 integrates advanced electronically controlled mopping technology, significantly enhancing both cleaning efficiency and effectiveness, which makes your floors remain free from footprints, dirt, and dust throughout the day. It features an upgraded high-capacity water tank with a four-stage personalized water adjustment system, enabling it to address various stains across different settings according to user requirements.
  • 【Comprehensive Intelligent Control】 Multiple Cleaning Modes, combined with personalized settings, allow you to easily accomplish various household cleaning tasks with zero effort from your smartphone. Moreover, by voice commands, you can start your cleaning while kicking back and relaxing (compatible with Alexa or Google Assistant). Enjoy an utterly hands-free cleaning experience.
  • 【5200Pa Powerful Suction】A 3-point cleaning system coupled with strong suction ensures your floors are free from all dirt, dust, and crumbs for a thorough, superior clean. The highly passable compact design combined with 3-level suction facilitates cleaning in hard-to-reach areas where you can't, making it suitable for a wide range of surfaces from wood, and hard floors to low pile carpets.
  • 【Smarter High Automation & Self-Recharge】 The robot aspiradora is equipped with an advanced high-coverage sensing system and multiple algorithmic data points, enabling autonomous completion of cleaning tasks—from scheduled starting, detecting obstacles, adjusting direction, and switching modes, to automatically returning to recharge. This hassle-free operation ensures a clean home when you return.
  • 【Engineered for Pet Owner】 The exclusive no-entanglement design negates the need for your dirty hands to clean up tangled dog or cat hair, unlike traditional roller brushes. Its dual rotating electric side brushes sweep and collect hidden pet hair more efficiently throughout the house, saving you the hassle.

The Freo Pro is a particularly good match for a home where the robot will run frequently rather than tackle occasional major messes. It struggled with a small pile of cereal, so it is not the best choice if your floors routinely collect large food pieces, pet kibble, or similar debris.

What you get

  • Narwal lists 8,500Pa suction, a DualFlow tangle-free system, AI DirtSense, and 3D structured-light obstacle avoidance.
  • The all-in-one base station automatically empties dust, washes the mop, and dries it.
  • Narwal claims approximately seven weeks of dust storage under suitable conditions; actual capacity depends on debris, pets, and cleaning frequency.
  • The quiet operation is an advantage in homes where the robot runs during the day or around people.

What to know before buying

There is no spot-cleaning function, which limits the Freo Pro when you need to clean one isolated spill or high-traffic patch without starting a larger room routine. The dock also does not eliminate water maintenance: you still need to refill the clean-water tank and empty the dirty-water tank regularly. Choose it for low-intervention daily cleaning, not for a completely hands-off appliance.

2. iRobot Roomba 105 Combo: best starter robot vacuum

The Roomba 105 Combo is the most approachable pick for a first-time robot-vacuum owner. The Spruce praised its smooth setup, intuitive app, roomy dustbin, scheduling, zone cleaning, and day-to-day pickup of dust, dirt, cat hair, scattered litter, and ordinary debris. It also performed well across tile, carpet, and higher-pile rugs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its ClearView LiDAR navigation builds a map, while carpet detection can prevent the mop from being used on rugs. The official feature set also includes vacuum-only, mop-only, and combination modes, adjustable suction, room targeting, schedules, and keep-out zones.

The dock distinction matters

Do not treat every Roomba 105 Combo listing as the same package. The Spruce’s tested configuration included mapping and self-emptying, while iRobot separately lists a Roomba 105 Combo with an AutoEmpty dock. iRobot says that AutoEmpty version can store up to 75 days of debris, but that claim applies to the AutoEmpty configuration, not the charge-only version. Check the exact box contents before comparing prices or assuming the robot will empty itself.

Limitations

The 105 Combo was less capable with larger food spills such as Cheerios, and The Spruce found it uncomfortably loud, especially during emptying. It is a strong entry point for routine maintenance, but shoppers with frequent large spills or a low tolerance for noise should move up the list.

3. iRobot Roomba Combo 10 Max: best Roomba

The Roomba Combo 10 Max is the better choice for shoppers who want iRobot’s more capable vacuum-mop system and detailed app controls. The Spruce found that it picked up dog hair effectively on most surfaces, transitioned well between hard floors and carpet, and cleaned wet spills without leaving pools of water.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its AutoWash dock self-empties the robot, washes the mop pad, and dries it. The app supports room mapping and targeted cleaning, while obstacle recognition helps the robot navigate around objects. iRobot describes the cleaning system as using an edge-sweeping brush, dual rubber brushes, and SmartScrub in addition to its vacuum and mopping functions.

The important caveats

  • Noise is the main day-to-day drawback.
  • The Spruce found some dog-hair clumps left behind on low-pile rugs, even though performance was strong on most other surfaces.
  • The rollers occasionally developed hair wraps and needed weekly cleaning during testing.
  • iRobot listed a manufacturer price of $1,399.99 for item X085020 during the research period, but retailer prices and promotions change.

Buy the Combo 10 Max when you value a mature app ecosystem and extensive dock automation more than the lowest price or quietest operation. It is overkill for someone who only wants occasional dust pickup.

4. Roborock Saros 10R: best upgrade

The Roborock Saros 10R is the premium upgrade for owners of an older or less capable robot vacuum. The Spruce found it easy to set up, well designed, and especially effective on hard floors and low-pile rugs, where it collected dog hair, crumbs, and ordinary household dirt.

Its thin body is a major reason to consider it. Roborock identifies the Saros 10R as approximately 3.14 inches tall, making it useful where furniture clearance is limited. The company also lists its StarSight Autonomous System 2.0, DuoDivide anti-tangle brush, dual spinning mops, and automated dock functions. Roborock lists up to 22mm of mop lift including the chassis; that is a manufacturer specification, not an independent test result.

Why it is an upgrade

The dock self-empties and self-cleans the mop pads, and the tangle-free brush roll reduces routine brush maintenance. The Spruce’s dust bag lasted approximately six weeks in testing, although household size, pet hair, and cleaning frequency will change that figure.

Obstacle avoidance is not flawless

The Spruce found the AI obstacle avoidance somewhat overcautious or under-refined around objects such as rug tassels. That can mean missed areas rather than collisions. It is a sensible trade-off for many households, but do not interpret the feature as an assurance that every small object will be recognized perfectly.

5. Narwal Flow 2: best features

The Narwal Flow 2 is the feature-focused choice. Its appeal is the combination of AI dirt sensing, object recognition, adaptive suction, a smart light bar, and an all-in-one self-emptying base. Narwal presents it as a flagship robot vacuum and mop, and The Spruce’s comparison table lists 31,000Pa suction.

That suction figure needs context. The Spruce’s narrative discusses hands-on results from testing the original Narwal Flow, while the 31,000Pa figure is listed for the Flow 2. Those facts should not be combined into a claim that the Flow 2 independently achieved the original Flow’s test results. In testing of the original Flow, The Spruce observed strong handling of outdoor dirt, cat hair, food spills, and cat litter, including extended cleaning of a dirty tiled kitchen floor.

Best for feature-oriented shoppers

The Flow 2 makes sense when you want the robot to adapt its cleaning behavior rather than simply follow a schedule. AI dirt sensing and object recognition can make automated runs more responsive, and the status light gives the machine a more visible way to communicate what it is doing.

Software and water-maintenance reservations

The Spruce reported programming hiccups, occasional inaccurate spot or zone selection, and instances where detected objects could be mislabeled. The testing notes also recommend changing the dirty water after every cleaning to reduce the risk of odors. That maintenance burden is easy to overlook when the feature list emphasizes automation.

6. Shark PowerDetect 2-in-1: best mid-range option

The Shark PowerDetect 2-in-1 Robot Vacuum and Mop is the balanced option for shoppers who want useful automation without paying for every premium feature. The Spruce found reliable pickup of dust, crumbs, and ordinary household debris on hard floors and carpets. It was also quiet, straightforward to set up, and supported by a user-friendly app with mapping and obstacle avoidance.

The tested unit self-emptied and auto-dried its mop pads. It struggled somewhat on textured rugs, but its overall combination of cleaning ability, approachable controls, and lower operating noise makes it a practical middle-ground choice.

NeverTouch versus NeverTouch Pro

Shark sells different dock configurations, and the distinction changes the maintenance proposition. The NeverTouch base tested by The Spruce automatically dried the mop pads but did not wash them. Shark’s NeverTouch Pro version adds automatic mop-pad washing and drying, automatic debris emptying, water refilling, a debris bin rated for up to 60 days, and up to 30 days of hands-free water maintenance according to Shark’s product information.

Confirm whether a listing includes the standard NeverTouch base or NeverTouch Pro before comparing it with the other models. A promotional price of $629.99 was shown on Shark’s official page during the research pass; it should not be treated as a permanent price.

Which one should you buy?

  • Choose the Narwal Freo Pro if you want the best overall balance of quiet operation, routine vacuuming, mopping, and dock automation—and you can live without spot cleaning.
  • Choose the Roomba 105 Combo if this is your first robot vacuum and you want the simplest setup and a capable app. Verify whether the package includes AutoEmpty.
  • Choose the Roomba Combo 10 Max if you prefer iRobot’s app and want mop washing, mop drying, obstacle recognition, and strong all-around cleaning.
  • Choose the Roborock Saros 10R if you are upgrading from an older robot, need a thin body, and prioritize hard-floor performance and reduced brush tangling.
  • Choose the Narwal Flow 2 if adaptive cleaning, AI sensing, and feature depth matter more than the simplest software experience.
  • Choose the Shark PowerDetect 2-in-1 if you want a quieter, easier-to-use mid-range machine. Check which NeverTouch dock is included.

How to choose a robot vacuum for your home

Prioritize tested behavior over suction numbers

Pa ratings are not a complete performance ranking. For pet homes, pay closer attention to demonstrated hair pickup, brush tangling, obstacle avoidance, and performance on the specific mix of hard floors, rugs, and carpet in your home. These six models differ in those areas even though each offers substantial automation.

Decide whether you need a mop

A combo machine can vacuum and mop, but mopping adds water tanks, pads, drying, and cleaning tasks. If you mainly need dry debris removal, a vacuum-only robot may involve less upkeep. If you have sealed hard floors and regularly deal with footprints or liquid spills, a combo model can be worthwhile—but verify how the dock handles the mop pads and dirty water.

Look beyond the phrase self-emptying

A self-emptying dock transfers debris into a larger bag that may last weeks or months, reducing bin handling. It does not mean the appliance is maintenance-free. Bags still need replacement, and mop pads, filters, brushes, clean-water tanks, and dirty-water tanks still need attention.

Use mapping and keep-out zones correctly

Smart mapping is more methodical than randomized bump navigation. It enables room-specific cleaning, schedules, and keep-out zones. Before the first mapping run, clear cables, toys, clothing, and other clutter from the floor. All six picks include object avoidance, but The Spruce notes that the technology is still developing and that robots perform better when floors are prepared.

Be careful with construction and renovation debris

These recommendations were tested on household messes including hair, cereal, sand, coffee, syrup, litter, and ordinary dirt. They are not a substitute for a shop vacuum or manual cleanup around active construction work. Remove screws, chunks of material, loose packaging, and other jobsite debris before allowing a robot onto a finished floor, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for dust and moisture.

How The Spruce tested these models

The Spruce says it tested more than 40 robot vacuums and selected these six using setup, cleaning effectiveness, maneuverability, and value. Testers assembled each unit, including filters, docking stations, and mop pads. They used typical messes such as hair, cereal, and sand on hard floors and carpets; tested coffee and syrup on hard floors for models with mopping; observed navigation through an obstacle course in testers’ homes; assessed cleaning and maintenance of vacuum parts; and compared performance and features with price.

The result is a useful comparison of tested behavior, but it is not a promise that every home will see identical results. Floor texture, rug height, pets, clutter, room layout, cleaning frequency, and dock configuration all affect the experience.

Maintenance you should expect

  1. Empty or replace the dust container or bag. Self-emptying extends the interval, but bags eventually fill and need model-specific replacements.
  2. Clean the brushes. Hair can wrap around rollers even on machines marketed as tangle-resistant. The Roomba Combo 10 Max required weekly roller attention during The Spruce’s testing.
  3. Wash and dry mop components as directed. A dock that dries pads is not necessarily one that washes them. The standard Shark NeverTouch configuration is an example.
  4. Manage clean and dirty water. Narwal models in particular still require regular tank attention, and The Spruce recommends changing the Flow 2’s dirty water after every cleaning to help avoid odors.
  5. Replace filters and consumables. Check the exact model before buying dust bags, mop pads, filters, brush rolls, or cleaning solution. Compatibility is not universal across a product family.
  6. Plan for eventual replacement. The Spruce gives robot vacuums a general lifespan estimate of three to five years, while noting that maintenance and a replacement battery can extend service life.

Prices in this category change frequently. In The Spruce’s May 28, 2026 update, the retailer prices shown across the roundup ranged from approximately $225 for the Roomba 105 Combo to approximately $1,500 for the Narwal Flow 2, while manufacturer pages showed different prices or promotions during the same research period. Treat those figures as dated price tiers, not current quotes or guaranteed availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are self-emptying robot vacuums maintenance-free?

No. Self-emptying docks reduce dust-bin handling, but owners still need to replace dust bags, clean brushes and filters, maintain mop pads, and manage clean and dirty water. Combo models generally require more maintenance than vacuum-only robots.

Which of these robot vacuums is best for a first-time buyer?

The Roomba 105 Combo is the most accessible starting point because The Spruce found its setup and app intuitive. Confirm whether the listing includes the AutoEmpty dock: iRobot’s up-to-75-day debris-storage claim applies to that configuration, not the charge-only version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Shark PowerDetect 2-in-1 wash its mop pads?

The tested standard NeverTouch base automatically dried the mop pads but did not wash them. Shark’s NeverTouch Pro configuration adds automatic mop-pad washing and drying, plus automatic water refilling. Check the included dock rather than relying only on the product name.

Which pick is best for homes with pets?

The Spruce found useful hair pickup across several models, but results varied by surface. The Roomba Combo 10 Max picked up dog hair well on most surfaces but left some clumps on low-pile rugs, while the Roborock Saros 10R performed especially well on hard floors and low-pile rugs. Brush maintenance and obstacle avoidance matter as much as advertised suction.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Narwal Freo Pro is the strongest all-around choice for quiet, automated everyday cleaning. Pick the Roomba 105 Combo for the most approachable entry point, the Roomba Combo 10 Max for a premium iRobot experience, the Roborock Saros 10R for a thin upgrade, the Narwal Flow 2 for advanced features, or the Shark PowerDetect 2-in-1 for a quieter mid-range balance. In every case, verify the exact dock configuration and budget for ongoing brush, filter, bag, pad, and water maintenance.
