Match the hose to the planted area
A soaker hose is porous tubing that releases water gradually along its length. UF/IFAS identifies beds, plant rows, and raised beds as suitable uses. Measure the planted runs and plan the route before choosing a length; avoid paying for hose you cannot position effectively. A water-conservation factsheet recommends runs no longer than 100 feet and says distribution is most uniform on level ground. Treat that as general guidance, alongside the instructions for the particular hose.

Check pressure and distribution
Pressure requirements vary by model, so follow the manufacturer’s stated operating range rather than assuming a single setting works for all hoses. In Bob Vila’s tests, testers began at 20 PSI and raised pressure to 40 PSI when a hose performed well at the lower setting. For its Water Right 700 Series test, Bob Vila observed coverage about six inches on each side after 30 minutes at 20 PSI; at 40 PSI it observed some spraying. Those are results from that review’s conditions, not guaranteed coverage or operating specifications for your garden.
As a separate maker-specific example, GARDENA says its hose’s flow and pressure can be adjusted to an ideal working pressure of 0.5–1 bar using a control valve. The same product page says it can be shortened or extended up to 30 m with Connection Set (1989). Confirm region, model, and compatibility before applying those details to a purchase. Consider material, flexibility, fittings, and maintenance
Compare whether a hose bends easily around beds, how its fittings connect to your tap or other hose sections, and whether its design is prone to kinks or clogging. Flat and round hoses can differ in storage and how they lie in a bed; assess the specific product rather than assuming one shape always distributes water better. Check current manufacturer documentation for material, connector compatibility, care instructions, and any warranty.

How to set up a soaker hose for more consistent watering
- Plan the route: Lay out runs beside the plants in the bed, row, or raised bed. Keep the path as level as practical and avoid sharp bends that can kink the hose.
- Confirm the pressure guidance: Read the hose maker’s instructions. A SavingWater.org factsheet recommends a 10 or 12 PSI pressure regulator as general setup guidance, but the hose’s own requirements take precedence.
- Add compatible controls: A timer can help schedule watering. Use a backflow preventer where required by local rules or the system design, and check that connectors, end caps, filters, and regulators fit the hose.
- Run a short check: Turn on the water at the recommended setting and observe the length of the hose for leaks, kinks, or uneven seepage. Adjust pressure only within the manufacturer’s guidance.

What a soaker hose can—and cannot—promise
Targeting water near plant roots can reduce evaporation, runoff, and watering of surrounding areas compared with less targeted application. UF/IFAS describes soaker hoses as porous hoses that seep slowly along their length, reducing evaporation, and discusses microirrigation’s potential benefits.
