There is not enough published evidence to name five defensible, charcoal-only test winners. The documented comparison material covers three relevant models: Weber Go-Anywhere Charcoal Grill, Lotus Grill and Weber Jumbo Joe. This guide separates manufacturer specifications from independent review data, explains the trade-offs that matter when carrying and cooking with charcoal, and shows what to verify before buying.
What “portable” means for a charcoal grill
Portability is more than a product label. A useful comparison includes packed weight and dimensions, a secure lid and handles, loading a grill after cooking, cooking area, airflow control, setup, ash removal and replacement-part support. A smaller grill is easier to carry but normally gives up usable grate space.

The documented models
The figures below come from different sources and markets. They are not results from one shared laboratory test, and the Weber Go-Anywhere specifications are manufacturer claims unless explicitly attributed to Ideal Home.

How the three documented options differ
Weber Go-Anywhere: the balanced compact choice
Weber says the Go-Anywhere is intended for two to four people and provides 160 square inches of cooking area. Its adjustable vents and dampers are designed to regulate airflow, while the Char-Rail insert lets users arrange coals for direct heat or move them to one side for indirect cooking. Those are manufacturer statements, not independent performance results. The folding legs lock the lid for transport, an important practical feature when the grill is cool and packed.
#1 Best Overall
- Porcelain-enameled bowl and lid with a cooking area of 240 square inch
- 18.5-inch diameter plated steel cooking grate
- Rust-resistant aluminum dampers and ash catcher
- One glass-reinforced nylon handle
- Assembled dimensions 19.75-inch by 20.5-inch by 19.75-inch
Ideal Home’s hands-on guide lists the model at 6.78 kg with a 42 × 26 cm cooking area and a UK RRP of £114.99. Weber’s US listing showed 11.5 lb and $89.99 on September 29, 2026. The differing numbers reflect regional listings and presentation, not a single universal test result.
Lotus Grill: the lightest cited option
Ideal Home lists the Lotus Grill at 3.7 kg, substantially below the Go-Anywhere figure in that UK comparison. The cited material does not establish its cooking area, current price or a like-for-like charcoal capacity, so weight alone cannot determine whether it suits a group meal.
Weber Jumbo Joe: more grate, more to carry
Bob Vila lists the Jumbo Joe at 21.5 lb with 240 square inches of cooking area in its 2026 portable-grill comparison. That is materially larger and heavier than the Go-Anywhere figures above. It may suit cooks who prioritize simultaneous food over minimum pack weight, but the cited article is broader than a charcoal-only five-grill ranking.

Fire control and cooking flexibility
Charcoal grills need controllable airflow and a way to create heat zones. Vents should be adjustable while the lid is closed, and the grate should leave enough room to bank coals away from food. Weber describes the Go-Anywhere’s Char-Rail insert this way: “Char-rail insert lets you arrange coals for direct heat grilling or move coals to one side for slow indirect cooking.” This is product-page copy, not an independent test finding.
- Direct heat: coals sit below the food for searing and quick cooking.
- Indirect heat: coals are banked to one side, leaving a cooler zone for slower cooking with the lid on.
- Airflow: opening vents generally increases the fire; closing them reduces oxygen, but changes take time and should be made cautiously.
Setup, transport and cleanup checks
Before lighting
- Confirm the grate, lid and legs are correctly seated.
- Use a stable, non-combustible outdoor surface with clearance from structures and dry vegetation.
- Plan a direct and an indirect coal zone before food goes on.
After cooking
- Keep the grill closed and allow charcoal and ash to become completely cool before disposal.
- Do not load a warm grill into a vehicle or carry bag.
- Check whether the lid actually stays secured and whether handles remain comfortable after cooking; these are model-specific handling questions, not guaranteed by a portability label.
Ideal Home notes that charcoal cleanup takes longer than other fuel types and that ash should be discarded only when fully cool.
Which size suits four people?
A four-person meal depends on what is being cooked at the same time, not just the stated headcount. Weber positions the Go-Anywhere for two to four people, while the Jumbo Joe’s 240-square-inch grate offers more surface than the Go-Anywhere’s 160 square inches. Larger food loads generally mean more fuel, longer heat-up and more weight to transport. For compact trips, prioritize packability; for batch cooking, prioritize usable grate area.
Rank #3
- Tuck-N-Carry Lid Lock doubles as lid holder
- Compact and lightweight for grilling on the go
- Porcelain-enamel finish is scratch and rust-resistant
- Ash Catcher protects surfaces and makes cleanup easy
- Fits 6 burgers made with a Weber burger press
Charcoal versus portable gas
Charcoal provides smoke and high-heat cooking but requires lighting time, active airflow management and complete ash cooling. Portable gas grills usually start faster and avoid ash, but they require a compatible cylinder and do not reproduce charcoal flavor. The better fuel is the one that fits your campsite rules, transport plan and tolerance for setup and cleanup.
How long does a portable charcoal grill stay hot?
No duration is established in the cited material. Burn time varies with charcoal quantity, vent settings, weather, lid use and food load. Treat a grill as hot until the coals and ash are completely cool; never rely on elapsed time alone before disposal or transport.
Buying checklist
- Compare manufacturer weight and independent measurements using the same units and region.
- Check actual grate dimensions, not only a person-count claim.
- Look for adjustable vents and a practical method for banking coals.
- Verify lid security, handles, folding legs and any carry bag.
- Confirm grate and ash-pan parts can be removed and replaced.
- Check current local price, warranty and fuel availability; the cited prices are time- and market-specific.

What size portable BBQ is best for four people?

The Bottom Line
The evidence supports comparing the Weber Go-Anywhere, Lotus Grill and Weber Jumbo Joe, but it does not substantiate five tested charcoal winners. Choose the Go-Anywhere for the strongest documented balance of portability and control, the Lotus Grill when minimum weight dominates, or the Jumbo Joe when grate area matters more than pack weight.
