Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The MuellerLiving Adjustable Mandoline Slicer is the best all-around choice for most cooks because it combines adjustable thickness with slicing, julienne, shredding, grating, and wavy-cut options. The Dash Safe Slice is the better choice for beginners who want their hands farther from an exposed blade, while the compact Kyocera Soft Grip Ceramic Mandoline is best for simple, thin slicing. Occasional users on a budget should consider the OXO Good Grips Handheld Mandoline; frequent users who want precise settings and many cut styles should upgrade to the OXO Good Grips Chef’s Mandoline Slicer 2.0.

Although the supplied title attributes the article to Food & Wine, the current matching article was found on FoodNetwork.com, updated February 5, 2026, and credited to Taylor Murray. Before choosing one: mandolines are sharp by design

A mandoline pushes food across a fixed blade to create fast, consistent slices. That consistency is useful for potato gratins, cucumber salads, pickles, vegetable chips, slaws, and evenly cooked roasted vegetables. It is also why a mandoline deserves more caution than an ordinary kitchen gadget: the blade is exposed or positioned directly beneath the food path.

Use the supplied food holder or guard every time. Create a flat side on round produce before slicing, cut food into pieces that fit the device, and keep your free hand away from the blade path. If the blade becomes dull, replace or sharpen it when the manufacturer permits; forcing food through a dull blade reduces control. cut-resistant kitchen gloves can be an additional precaution for exposed-blade models, but they are not injury-proof and do not replace the guard or careful technique.

1. MuellerLiving Adjustable Mandoline Slicer: best overall

Choose it if: you want the broadest set of cutting functions without moving to the premium price tier.

OXO Good Grips Handheld Mandoline Slicer with Non-Slip Handle for Kitchen | OXO Good Grips Handheld Mandoline Slicer for Kitchen, Adjustable Vegetable Slicer
  • Get Just the Right Slice: The handheld mandoline slicer for kitchen easily adjusts to 1 mm, 2.5 mm, or 4 mm so you can perfectly slice a range of vegetables and fruit.
  • Slice Securely: The large non-slip handle and stable foot are designed for comfort and security while slicing potatoes, cabbage, onions, cheese or fruit.
  • Fits Your Routine: Slice directly onto a plate, on a cutting board or hook over a bowl so never have to make awkward movements or interrupt the flow of your food preparation to clean up messes.
  • See What You've Sliced: The mandoline food slicer features a clever window so you can assess volume while slicing. This veggie slicer won't let you end up with too many sliced cucumbers or more potatoes than your gratin called for.
  • Built to Last: Like all our products, the OXO Mandoline Slicer is engineered to streamline and simplify the task at hand, whether you use it as a general vegetable slicer, meat slicer, cheese slicer or even a fruit slicer.

The MuellerLiving model is the most versatile recommendation in this group. Its V-shaped blade handled tough skins cleanly in testing and cut through the stem end of a beefsteak tomato particularly well. Thickness adjusts from paper-thin slices to nearly one-half inch, and the tool includes straight- and wavy-cut capability plus coarse and fine shredding, grating, and julienne functions.

The stainless-steel and plastic unit weighs 2.2 pounds and measures 13 by 6 by 2.5 inches according to the published test specifications. It is dishwasher-safe and includes storage for its extra stainless-steel blades, which is helpful because loose mandoline inserts are easy to misplace.

The trade-off is that food may stick in some areas, especially around the multiple attachments. The variety is useful only if you will actually use several of the cutting styles; otherwise, a simpler handheld model takes less space and is easier to rinse.

Bottom line: The MuellerLiving mandoline slicer is the strongest default recommendation for cooks who want one mandoline to cover everyday slicing and more specialized vegetable preparation.

2. Kyocera Soft Grip Ceramic Mandoline Slicer: best handheld

Choose it if: you primarily want thin, even slices and need a lightweight tool for a small kitchen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Kyocera is a compact handheld mandoline with a ceramic blade and no interchangeable blade-style attachments. It weighs only 4.6 ounces and measures 11.75 by 3.5 inches, making it easy to store in a drawer rather than dedicate cabinet space to a countertop unit.

Instead of continuous adjustment, it offers four thicknesses: 0.55, 1.3, 2.0, and 3.0 millimeters. That limitation makes it less suitable for cooks who frequently switch between paper-thin garnish slices, thicker potato rounds, julienne strips, and crinkle cuts. For cucumbers, radishes, onions, and similar produce, however, the straightforward design is an advantage.

Kyocera says the ceramic blade resists acids, juices, oils, and salts and will not rust or corrode. Those are the manufacturer’s material claims, not an independent promise that the blade will remain sharp indefinitely. The ceramic construction also does not turn the tool into a safer mandoline: the cutting edge still requires the same careful handling as a metal blade.

Gramercy Mandoline Slicer for Kitchen with 12 Slice Settings, Black Edition | Slice from Paper-Thin to Thick-Cut with Stainless Steel Frame and Rotating Blade, Non-Slip Base, Gloves and Guard Included
  • PRECISION YOU CAN DIAL IN: An adjustable mandoline slicer with a built-in thickness dial moves you from paper-thin to thick-cut; this mandoline slicer for kitchen also works as a precise vegetable slicer for clean, considered cuts on everyday prep
  • A PRO BLADE THAT STAYS SHARP: The rotating blade cylinder switches between cutting styles smoothly by design; a Professional 4CR15 stainless steel blade delivers clean, sharp slices that keep their edge through onions, potatoes and firm produce
  • BUILT TO STAY PUT, BUILT TO LAST: A non-slip base with anti-slip feet keeps the slicer steady on the counter while you work; the substantial stainless steel frame is sturdy by design, made to handle daily slicing without wobble or flex
  • SAFE FROM THE FIRST SLICE: Includes cut-resistant gloves, a removable blade guard and a cleaning brush, plus a quick-start guide so you can prep safely from day one; thoughtful extras that protect your hands and keep cleanup simple and quick
  • SAFE, DURABLE, BEAUTIFUL: Top-rack dishwasher safe for effortless cleanup; rust-resistant stainless steel built with quiet, considered design intention, this is kitchen tooling made to belong on your counter and to work as good as it looks

Bottom line: The Kyocera ceramic mandoline is a good fit when compact storage and reliable thin slicing matter more than versatility.

3. Dash Safe Slice Mandoline: best for beginners

Choose it if: your first priority is keeping your hands away from the blade during normal operation.

The Dash Safe Slice uses an enclosed chute and ingredient pusher rather than asking the user to slide produce directly over an exposed cutting surface. The tested model supports slicing, dicing, julienne, and matchstick cuts, folds for storage, and has eight thickness settings. Dash’s product page describes adjustment from 1 to 8 millimeters, more than 30 slicing combinations, dishwasher-safe components, a food-catching container, a cleaning brush, and a one-year manufacturer warranty.

The safety-first design comes with a meaningful flexibility penalty. The chute is relatively narrow, so large or unusually shaped produce must be trimmed before it can enter. In testing, a tomato had to be cut into an approximately three-inch square to fit. That extra prep is worthwhile for a nervous beginner, but frustrating if you regularly slice large potatoes, eggplant, or other bulky ingredients.

The manufacturer’s page showed SKU DSM100, a $49.99 price, and “Sold out” status when accessed. Both the stock status and price are time-sensitive. Dash also sells a model-compatible Dash Safe Slice cleaning brush for clearing food from the blade and chute; it is an accessory for this model, not a universal mandoline brush.

Bottom line: The Dash is the best recommendation for a safety-conscious beginner, provided the narrower chute will accommodate the produce you normally prepare. No mandoline is injury-proof.

4. OXO Good Grips Handheld Mandoline Slicer: best value

Choose it if: you want an inexpensive, compact tool for occasional slicing and do not need multiple blade styles.

The basic OXO handheld model keeps the controls simple: it has a straight blade, three thickness settings, and a hand guard. It measures 12.5 by 4 inches, so it stores easily and cleans more quickly than a multi-attachment countertop mandoline.

In testing, it sliced potatoes quickly and easily. It was less effective on tougher ingredients such as tomatoes and eggplant, where a more capable blade system or sturdier countertop design may give better results. The included guard was also criticized as difficult to use, an important consideration because a guard is not optional safety equipment on a handheld mandoline.

  • Built for Daily Use - Dishwasher safe and BPA-free construction with sharp 420 stainless steel blades. This mandoline slicer for kitchen is ready for your busiest cooking days. Durable materials ensure years of reliable slicing performance for any ingredient.

OXO describes the tool as compact, adjustable, and equipped with three thickness settings. Its modest feature set is the reason it costs less, not a flaw if your typical tasks are slicing potatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, or similar produce.

Bottom line: The OXO handheld is the sensible value choice for occasional users who prioritize low cost, easy cleaning, and small storage over maximum control.

5. OXO Good Grips Chef’s Mandoline Slicer 2.0: best splurge

Choose it if: you use a mandoline frequently and will take advantage of precise thickness control and multiple cut styles.

The Chef’s Mandoline 2.0 is the premium model in this tested group. It offers straight, wavy, julienne, and French-fry styles, with up to 21 unique cuts reported by the test source. Its guard performed best among the tested models, and the clearly labeled thickness controls reduce guesswork when changing settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The test report lists 11 thickness settings and dimensions of 16 by 6.5 by 2.5 inches. OXO’s official product page identifies the model as SKU 11194500, lists stainless-steel blades, 0.5-millimeter adjustment intervals, up to 21 cuts, and dimensions of 16 by 7 by 6.25 inches. OXO’s buying guide describes a 0-to-9-millimeter range in half-millimeter increments and says the company tested more than 100 pounds of potatoes with the model.

Because the test report and official OXO materials describe the dimensions and setting count differently, verify the current manual or package before relying on a precise specification. The consistent conclusion is that this is the most feature-rich, precisely controlled model here—not the most compact one. Its size, weight, and approximately $115 price make less sense for an occasional user.

Bottom line: The OXO Chef’s Mandoline Slicer 2.0 is the upgrade for frequent cooks who want many repeatable cuts and a better-executed guard, and who have room to store a bulky countertop tool.

How the models were evaluated

The matching 2026 editorial test began with hundreds of mandolines and narrowed the field to eight popular models. Editors inspected and measured each one, read the manuals, evaluated safety features and dishwasher suitability, and tested the tools with several ingredients:

  • An unpeeled russet potato set to 1/8-inch slices
  • A beefsteak tomato set to 1/4-inch slices
  • Eggplant cut into 1/2-inch rounds
  • Carrots tested with wavy blades where a model offered them

The resulting rankings therefore reflect more than one successful potato slice: they consider adjustment, cutting performance across different textures, safety features, cleaning, storage, and the practical usefulness of the included options.

How to choose the right mandoline

Handheld or countertop?

Handheld models such as the Kyocera and basic OXO are lighter, cheaper, and easier to store. They work well when you are making a small amount of one type of slice. They also require you to hold or position the tool over a bowl or board, and their guards may be less comfortable to use.

Countertop models such as the MuellerLiving and OXO Chef’s Mandoline are more stable and generally offer more cut styles and adjustment. They occupy more storage space and have more parts to clean. The Dash occupies a middle ground: its chute-based system is designed around controlled feeding, but the opening restricts ingredient size.

Look at the guard, not just the blade

A sharp blade is necessary for clean cuts, but the quality and usability of the guard determine how likely you are to keep your fingers out of its path. A guard that is technically included but difficult to grip or position is less useful in everyday cooking. The OXO Chef’s model had the strongest guard performance in this test; the Dash’s enclosed chute provides the most distinct safety-oriented format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide whether you need continuous adjustment

Freely adjustable thickness is useful when recipes call for precise slices or when you switch between delicate garnishes and thicker roasting pieces. Fixed settings, as on the Kyocera, are simpler and faster when your needs are predictable. The four Kyocera settings and three OXO handheld settings are enough for basic slicing but not a substitute for a full adjustment system.

Do not pay for blades you will not use

Julienne, French-fry, wavy, shredding, and grating inserts can replace several separate prep tools. They also add storage and cleaning duties. Choose a multi-blade model only if those cuts are part of your regular cooking routine.

Check cleaning instructions and food traps

Dishwasher-safe parts reduce cleanup, but they do not eliminate the need to remove trapped food safely. Never reach blindly toward a blade to clear a clog. Use the supplied brush or another tool recommended by the manufacturer, and let removable parts dry fully before storage. The Dash’s dedicated cleaning brush is particularly relevant because its chute and blade area can collect food.

Consider the size of your produce

Measure or visualize the feed opening before buying. The Dash’s narrow chute requires more trimming, while handheld tools may be awkward with large produce. A flat, stable piece is easier to control than a round tomato or potato, so some trimming is sensible regardless of the model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which mandoline should you buy?

  • Buy the MuellerLiving for the best balance of versatility, adjustment, and price.
  • Buy the Dash Safe Slice if an enclosed feeding system is more important than accepting large produce without trimming.
  • Buy the Kyocera if you want the lightest, simplest handheld tool and mostly make thin slices.
  • Buy the basic OXO handheld if you slice occasionally and want the lowest-cost compact option.
  • Buy the OXO Chef’s Mandoline 2.0 if you cook often, want up to 21 cut styles, and have storage space for a large premium model.

Whichever model you choose, use its guard, keep the blade maintained, and slow down when a piece becomes too small to hold securely. A mandoline’s speed is valuable only when you remain in control of the food and the tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are mandoline slicers safe for beginners?

They can be used safely with proper technique, but no mandoline is injury-proof. Beginners should use the supplied guard, keep hands away from the blade path, trim produce to a stable shape, and consider a design such as the Dash Safe Slice with an enclosed chute. Cut-resistant gloves may add protection but are not a substitute for the guard or careful handling.

Is a ceramic mandoline better than a stainless-steel mandoline?

A ceramic blade can resist rust and corrosion, and Kyocera says its blade resists acids, juices, oils, and salts. Ceramic does not automatically mean sharper forever or safer to use. Stainless-steel models generally offer more blade-style and adjustment options in this lineup. Choose based on the cuts you need, not material alone.

Can mandoline slicers go in the dishwasher?

Some components of these models are dishwasher-safe, but follow the specific manufacturer instructions. The test evaluated dishwasher suitability and ran products through a dishwasher when permitted. Hand-washing may still be preferable for sharp blades and can help protect finishes and reduce the risk of contact with the cutting edge.

What is the best mandoline slicer for potatoes?

The MuellerLiving is the best general-purpose choice for potatoes because it offers broad thickness adjustment and multiple cut styles. The OXO handheld also sliced potatoes quickly and easily in testing and is a better low-cost choice for occasional use.

The Bottom Line

For most cooks, choose the MuellerLiving Adjustable Mandoline Slicer. It offers the best combination of thickness control and useful cutting options. Choose the Dash when an enclosed, beginner-friendly feed system matters most; the Kyocera or basic OXO for compact occasional use; and the OXO Chef’s Mandoline 2.0 for frequent, precision-focused cooking. Confirm current prices, stock, dimensions, and warranty details before purchase because those specifications and commercial terms can change.
