The GE Smart Dehumidifier is Better Homes & Gardens’ best overall dehumidifier for 2026. BHG’s other tested winners are the Dreo 110-Pint Dehumidifier 711S for basements, the Eva-Dry High Capacity Mini Dehumidifier for closets and enclosed storage, the Pure Enrichment PureDry Deluxe for bathrooms and small rooms, and the Costway Portable Dehumidifier for design-conscious buyers.
The right choice depends on more than the advertised square footage. Pint-per-day capacity, tank size, drainage, sensor accuracy, room conditions, noise, and the source of the moisture all affect the result. BHG’s findings come from home testing rather than a standardized laboratory comparison, so the specifications and observations below should be used as buying guidance—not a guarantee for every building.

How BHG tested these dehumidifiers
Better Homes & Gardens says it tested more than 30 popular models in real homes. Testers used each device for an initial two-week period followed by up to six months of regular use, with the reported evaluation covering setup, maintenance, portability, moisture-removal performance, controls and features, value, noise, built-in hygrometer accuracy, tank and filter cleaning, and the ease of detaching and draining the tank.
That is useful evidence for household buying decisions, but it is not standardized laboratory testing. The rooms, weather, moisture loads, operating settings, and test durations varied. For example, the GE was used in a large Pittsburgh basement during outdoor humidity averaging 70–75%, while the Dreo was used in Iowa under considerably lower average outdoor humidity. The results below should therefore be read as tested-use observations, not guaranteed performance ratings.
1. GE Smart Dehumidifier: best overall
The GE Smart Dehumidifier is BHG’s best overall choice and the most balanced option for a homeowner who wants strong capacity, smart controls, quiet operation, and flexible drainage. BHG tested it in an 1,800-square-foot Pittsburgh basement containing a kitchenette, bathroom, workout area, and home office. Outdoor humidity averaged 70–75% during the test.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The tester reported that the basement felt noticeably drier within 24 hours. Operation was described as a quiet, white-noise-like sound, and the built-in hygrometer seemed accurate compared with the tester’s experience. Those observations make this the strongest all-purpose pick in the roundup, particularly for a finished basement or a large lower level where excess humidity affects several rooms.
BHG lists a 50-pint-per-day capacity, a maximum room size of 5,000 square feet, dimensions of 13.19 × 16.54 × 12.91 inches, and both collection-tank and hose drainage. GE’s official specifications for model ADHR50LB list 50 pints per day, Smart Dry, continuous-drain capability, automatic restart, automatic defrost, three fan speeds, a washable filter, an adjustable humidistat, and stated operation of 47–50 dBA.
There is one specification that should be verified before purchase: BHG lists a 10-pint tank, while GE’s official page for ADHR50LB lists a 15-pint bucket. BHG’s retailer link also uses a generic product title rather than clearly displaying the model number. Confirm that the retailer listing matches ADHR50LB and check the current tank specification before publication or purchase.
Trade-offs
- The wheel assembly was difficult to install in BHG’s testing.
- The filters were somewhat challenging to remove.
- You cannot see the tank level from outside the unit; you must check the tank or app.
- The 50-pint rating refers to moisture removed per day under the applicable rating conditions, not the amount held in the reservoir.
Best fit: A finished basement, large lower level, or multi-use area where you want a general-purpose unit with automatic restart and continuous-drain capability.

2. Dreo 110-Pint Dehumidifier 711S: best for basements
The Dreo 110-Pint Dehumidifier, also identified as the 711S, is the better choice when basement moisture, remote control, and high extraction capacity matter more than compact size. BHG tested it in a 1,725-square-foot finished basement and a 100-square-foot furnace room in Iowa, where average outdoor humidity was 53%.
After six months of consistent use, the tester reported effective moisture reduction and less musty odor. The Dreo also provided remote humidity controls, bucket-full and filter-cleaning notifications, wheels, and pocket handles. Those handling and notification features are particularly practical in a basement where the machine may sit away from the main living area.
BHG lists a two-gallon tank, 110-pint-per-day capacity, maximum room size of 4,500 square feet, weight of 27.3 pounds, and dimensions of 11.3 × 15.4 × 24.4 inches. The manufacturer confirms the 711S name, smart control, dual-option tank and hose drainage, and a 46 dB quiet-operation claim.
In medium mode, the tester emptied the bucket about once per day. That is an important practical distinction: a high pint-per-day rating does not mean the reservoir can hold a day’s worth of extraction in a very damp basement. If a safe nearby drain is available, continuous drainage is likely the more convenient setup.
Sensor accuracy matters
The built-in hygrometer read approximately 4–5 percentage points higher than an external hygrometer in BHG’s test. The unit may therefore continue running or display a different humidity level from a separate meter in the same room. If the exact relative-humidity reading matters, verify it with a digital hygrometer placed near—but not directly beside—the dehumidifier.
Best fit: A basement or large, regularly damp room where remote controls, alerts, wheels, and a high extraction rating are worth more than the smaller footprint of a compact unit.
3. Eva-Dry High Capacity Mini Dehumidifier: best for very small enclosed spaces
The Eva-Dry High Capacity Mini Dehumidifier is fundamentally different from the other four picks. It uses renewable silica gel rather than a compressor and water-collection system, making it suitable for spaces where a conventional appliance would be excessive or physically impractical.
BHG tested it in an approximately 25-square-foot bedroom closet in Des Moines, with outdoor humidity averaging 46–49%. The silica-gel beads change from orange to dark green when the unit needs renewal. BHG says renewal takes 12–14 hours in a well-ventilated location. The physical humidity change in the closet was barely perceptible, but the tester considered it useful for very small enclosed areas.

Eva-Dry describes the E-500 as a renewable silica-gel unit for closets, wardrobes, storage rooms, safes, document storage, RVs, boats, and seasonal storage. BHG lists approximately 62 square feet of coverage, absorption of 6–8 ounces per day, and dimensions of 2.5 × 5.5 × 5.5 inches.
Set expectations carefully. BHG cautions that it may take up to six weeks to remove noticeable moisture from some spaces. The renewal cycle can be repeated for up to 10 years, according to the roundup’s product information, but that does not make the device appropriate for drying an entire bedroom, basement, bathroom, or construction area.
Best fit: A closet, safe, document cabinet, keepsake box, wardrobe, RV, boat, or other enclosed storage space where quiet, waterless operation is more important than rapid moisture removal.
4. Pure Enrichment PureDry Deluxe: best for bathrooms
The Pure Enrichment PureDry Deluxe is BHG’s compact-room and bathroom pick. The tester used it in an approximately 144-square-foot spare bedroom in Des Moines with outdoor humidity around 56%. Within its suggested room size, the unit was reported to be effective, lightweight, easy to operate, and quiet enough to resemble white noise.
Its transparent tank is a practical advantage: you can see water accumulating without opening an app or removing the reservoir. BHG also found that the tank slid out easily for disposal.
BHG lists a 1.5-pint-per-day capacity, a 3.17-pint tank, a five-pound weight, dimensions of 5.5 × 12 × 9.1 inches, and a maximum room size of 160 square feet. This is a small-room appliance, not a reasonable substitute for a 50- or 110-pint basement machine.
Availability needs special attention. Pure Enrichment’s own website currently shows the PureDry Deluxe as sold out, although inventory can differ by retailer. Check the live retailer listing, model identity, price, and return terms before relying on this pick for a project.
Best fit: A small bathroom, bedroom, laundry area, or similarly sized room where portability, a visible tank, and simple emptying are more important than high-volume extraction.

5. Costway Portable Dehumidifier: best design
The Costway Portable Dehumidifier is the unusual choice for buyers who do not want a typical white, gray, or black appliance visible in a finished space. BHG’s tester used the 2,500-square-foot model for two weeks in a 60-square-foot Los Angeles bathroom, with outdoor humidity ranging from 45–60%. The unit is available in four colors and has a retro, midcentury-inspired appearance.
The initial humidity change seemed limited, but the tester discovered that the built-in hygrometer was approximately 8% off and lowered the target setting. This is a reminder that a displayed humidity number can affect how aggressively a unit runs. The Costway also automatically shuts off when the tank is full and has wheels for movement.
BHG lists a half-gallon tank, 32-pint-per-day capacity, 25-pound weight, and dimensions of 11 × 7.5 × 20 inches. The 2,500-square-foot coverage figure should be treated as a manufacturer or retailer listing claim—not as the equivalent of a 2,500-square-foot BHG test. BHG’s actual test took place in a 60-square-foot bathroom.
Trade-offs
- The unit is heavy for its size.
- The handle was uncomfortable for carrying.
- The built-in humidity reading required compensation in testing.
- A half-gallon tank may fill quickly in a genuinely damp room despite the 32-pint-per-day rating.
Best fit: A finished bathroom or other visible room where appearance and color options are legitimate priorities, provided you are comfortable validating its humidity reading and moving a relatively heavy unit.
How to choose the right dehumidifier
Start with moisture load, not just square footage
Capacity is expressed in pints per day: the amount of water the appliance is rated to remove under specified conditions. Tank size is separate and determines how often you must empty the appliance. A large-capacity unit with a small reservoir can still require frequent emptying.
BHG’s general starting guidance is:
| Approximate space | Starting capacity range | What can change the choice |
|---|---|---|
| 500–1,500 square feet | 34–40 pints per day | High moisture, poor insulation, air leakage, or a cooler space may call for more capacity. |
| 1,000–2,500 square feet | 40–60 pints per day | The overlap shows why square footage alone is not enough. |
| More than 2,500 square feet | 60 pints per day or more | Consider the moisture source, room separation, temperature, and continuous drainage. |
ENERGY STAR advises sizing for both room size and the conditions in the space and says oversizing is generally preferable to undersizing. Its certified models use about 20% less energy than comparable non-certified models, with efficiency expressed as integrated energy factor—liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour. Look for the current ENERGY STAR designation and compare the efficiency information rather than choosing solely by the largest pint number.
For construction or renovation work, do not treat a room-size chart as a drying plan. A wet slab, active plumbing leak, roof leak, flood, or large quantity of damp building material can create a moisture load far beyond ordinary household use. Correct the source and follow the project’s drying requirements; a portable dehumidifier alone does not solve the underlying problem.
Choose tank drainage or hose drainage
A tank-only setup is flexible because the machine can operate almost anywhere with a suitable electrical outlet. The trade-off is repeated emptying and automatic shutoff when the tank is full.

Hose drainage is more useful in a large or persistently humid basement because it avoids carrying a full tank. It does require a safe nearby drain and a model-compatible connection. Before buying a dehumidifier drain hose, confirm the hose diameter, connector, drain direction, and whether the unit relies on gravity or includes a pump. Do not assume that a generic hose will fit or that a hose can push water uphill without a pump.
The GE, Dreo, and Costway picks support tank and hose drainage according to the cited product information. The PureDry Deluxe uses a collection tank, while the Eva-Dry uses renewable gel rather than a conventional water reservoir.
Use humidity readings as a guide, not absolute truth
The EPA recommends keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. Built-in sensors are convenient, but BHG found meaningful differences among the tested models: the GE’s reading seemed accurate to its tester, the Dreo read approximately 4–5 points high, and the Costway was approximately 8% off.
A separate digital hygrometer can help confirm whether a room is actually in the desired range. Place it away from the unit’s discharge air, exterior doors, direct sunlight, plumbing fixtures, and other localized moisture sources. If a built-in reading and a separate meter disagree, use the manual’s calibration or operating guidance where available rather than assuming either number is perfect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConsider noise, portability, and visibility
BHG says portable dehumidifiers commonly operate around 40–60 dBA. Some may be acceptable as background noise, while others can interrupt conversation or disturb sleep. A basement unit can tolerate more noise than one beside a bed, home office, or television.
Wheels help with repositioning, but they do not make a full tank light. Pocket handles, as on the Dreo, can be more useful than a single uncomfortable handle. If the appliance will be moved between rooms or carried up stairs, compare its empty weight, tank capacity, handle design, and clearance—not just its stated room coverage.
Care, mold, and safe expectations
Follow the individual manufacturer’s manual when it differs from general care guidance. BHG recommends switching the machine off for several hours before cleaning, removing dust with a vacuum nozzle, wiping the exterior with a gentle solution, and drying the tank, hose, filter, and body before storage. A damp tank or hose stored with residual water can create its own odor and hygiene problem.
- Clean the filter and tank on the schedule specified by the manufacturer.
- Keep air inlets and outlets clear of walls, stored materials, and heavy dust.
- Use a stable, level location and route any drain hose so water can leave safely.
- Empty the tank before moving the unit, especially on stairs.
- Inspect for leaks, standing water, or a drain connection that has come loose.
Humidity control helps address one condition that supports mold, but a dehumidifier does not remove existing mold. Leaks, wet materials, and established mold require separate correction and remediation. Avoid treating these products as medical devices or claiming that a particular model treats allergies or respiratory conditions.
Finally, a dehumidifier is not an air conditioner. Removing humidity can make a warm room feel more comfortable, but the appliance does not provide air-conditioning cooling.
Which one should you buy?
- Choose the GE for the strongest all-around combination of capacity, smart features, quiet operation, and drainage flexibility—after confirming the exact ADHR50LB listing and bucket specification.
- Choose the Dreo for a basement where high extraction capacity, remote control, alerts, wheels, and continuous drainage are priorities.
- Choose the Eva-Dry for a closet, safe, document cabinet, or other very small enclosed storage area—not an occupied room.
- Choose the Pure Enrichment for a compact bathroom or room up to roughly 160 square feet, subject to current retailer availability.
- Choose the Costway when the appliance will remain visible and retro styling matters enough to accept extra weight and less trustworthy built-in humidity readings.
For any of the larger units, the practical installation question is often drainage rather than headline capacity. If you can provide a compatible, safely routed drain hose, a basement machine becomes much less labor-intensive. If you cannot, choose a unit whose tank is easy to remove and plan for frequent emptying.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a dehumidifier cool a room?
A dehumidifier removes moisture from the air, but it does not cool a room like an air conditioner. Lower humidity can make a warm room feel more comfortable, but the appliance does not provide air-conditioning.
What humidity level should I set on a dehumidifier?
For ordinary indoor moisture control, the EPA recommends relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%. Use a separate humidity monitor to check the room if the built-in sensor appears inaccurate.
Is continuous hose drainage better than using the tank?
A hose is usually preferable when the room is persistently damp and a safe nearby drain is available. A tank is more flexible but must be emptied and may shut the appliance off when full. Verify hose compatibility and whether the drain works by gravity or requires a pump.
Can the Eva-Dry mini dehumidifier dry a whole room?
No. The Eva-Dry uses renewable silica gel and is intended for very small enclosed spaces such as closets, safes, and document storage. It is not a replacement for a compressor dehumidifier in a bathroom, bedroom, basement, or construction area.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: BHG’s GE Smart Dehumidifier is the best overall pick, while the Dreo 711S is the more purpose-built basement choice. The Eva-Dry is for enclosed storage, the PureDry Deluxe is for genuinely small rooms, and the Costway is for buyers who prioritize appearance. Match the pint rating to the moisture load, verify the humidity with an independent meter when necessary, and solve leaks or wet materials separately.
