Choose by the material and work phase, not by the roller’s name alone. For asphalt paving, a tandem vibratory roller is usually the practical starting point because its two drums cover and finish the mat. For soil and base preparation, a single-drum vibratory soil compactor is the more relevant machine class. The exact model, drum surface, vibration settings, lift thickness and project acceptance specification still control the final choice.

That distinction comes from the applications described for the Caterpillar CB-series tandem rollers and CS19 single-drum soil compactor. It is a useful starting framework, not a universal rule that every tandem roller is asphalt-only or every single-drum machine suits every soil.

Quick answer: which roller fits the job?

Job condition More likely starting choice What must be verified
Asphalt paving and mat finishing Tandem vibratory roller Lift thickness, mix temperature, required coverage, amplitude and frequency settings, and the project’s density and smoothness requirements
Granular soil or aggregate base Single-drum vibratory soil compactor Operating weight, drum width, vibration force, amplitude, soil moisture and the specified number of passes
Cohesive soil such as clay-rich material Single-drum compactor configured for cohesive soil Whether the machine accepts the required padfoot shell and whether the project specification calls for a padfoot pattern
Small utility or patching work spanning asphalt and granular base Compact utility roller, which may be tandem The manufacturer’s stated application range and the exact configuration; class names alone are not enough

A tandem roller has a drum at each end. A single-drum soil compactor has one primary compaction drum, commonly with rear tires. Those layouts affect how force is delivered and how the machine is used, but they do not replace a check of the specific model and attachment.

What the two roller types are designed to do

Tandem vibratory roller

A tandem roller uses two drums, one at the front and one at the rear. In the cited Caterpillar CB16 listing, the machine is presented with asphalt-oriented dimensions and compaction specifications. Caterpillar’s CB13 material also describes different amplitude and frequency settings for thin and thick asphalt lifts. That makes a tandem roller the logical first machine to investigate when the work is paving, sealing or smoothing an asphalt mat.

Two drums provide continuous contact at the front and rear of the machine. The important result for a paving crew is controlled coverage across the mat, not simply the fact that there are two drums. Drum width, static linear load, vibration force, amplitude and frequency determine how that coverage translates into compaction on the particular mix and lift.

Single-drum vibratory soil compactor

A single-drum soil compactor concentrates its primary compaction action in one large drum, with the rest of the machine supported by rear tires. The Caterpillar CS19 description identifies granular soil as a target application. It also says cohesive-soil work can be addressed when the machine is fitted with an optional padfoot shell.

That qualification matters. A smooth drum and a padfoot shell do not present the same contact pattern, and a machine that is suitable for granular material in one configuration should not automatically be treated as suitable for cohesive soil in another. Confirm the exact drum and attachment before mobilizing.

Why the name is not a complete specification

“Tandem” describes the two-drum layout; “single-drum” describes the one-drum layout. Neither term states the machine’s operating weight, drum width, static linear load, amplitude, centrifugal force, available frequency range or approved material envelope. A compact utility roller may be marketed for asphalt through granular-base applications, while a larger soil compactor may be optimized for a narrower range of earthwork.

Use the category to narrow the search, then use the model data and project specification to make the decision.

Match the roller to the material and work phase

Asphalt paving: start with a tandem roller

For asphalt, the first questions are about the mat and the paving sequence: What is the lift thickness? What mix is being placed? What temperature window and rolling pattern does the project specification require? Is the roller being used for breakdown, intermediate or finish work?

The CB13 information distinguishes thin- and thick-lift settings through different amplitude and frequency combinations. That does not establish an independent performance ranking, but it does show why a single “vibration setting” is not appropriate for every asphalt lift. Select the setting recommended for the exact machine and mix, and have the paving plan define speed, pass count and timing.

A tandem roller can also be relevant to small or utility-scale jobs. Caterpillar describes its CC2.7 GC compact utility roller as suitable from asphalt through granular base applications. That is a model-specific application claim, so check the manufacturer’s operating limits and the job specification rather than assuming every compact tandem roller can perform every base or soil task.

Granular soil and aggregate base: start with a single-drum compactor

Granular materials respond to vibration that rearranges particles and reduces voids. The cited CS19 application is granular soil, making a single-drum vibratory soil compactor the natural starting point for subgrade, fill and base preparation. The right choice still depends on material gradation, moisture, lift thickness and the required density.

Compare machines within the same application context. Operating weight, drum width, amplitude and centrifugal force influence how much material can be worked in each pass, but a larger number in one specification column is not automatically better if the drum or setting is wrong for the lift.

Cohesive soil: verify a padfoot configuration

Cohesive soils behave differently from clean granular soils. For the CS19, Caterpillar makes the cohesive-soil recommendation conditional on an optional padfoot shell. If the project contains clay-rich or otherwise cohesive material, ask the dealer or rental company to identify the shell, confirm compatibility and document the installed configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not compare a smooth-drum machine and a padfoot-equipped machine as though they were interchangeable. The drum contact pattern, operating method and acceptance criteria can differ, so the project engineer’s method specification should govern.

Mixed work and utility projects

Small utility projects may move from asphalt patches to granular trench backfill or base. A compact roller with a manufacturer-stated mixed application can reduce equipment changes, but versatility is not proof of equal productivity in every material. Confirm the percentage of time spent on each material, the narrowest access requirement, the required working width and whether the machine can be transported economically between sites.

Compare the specifications that actually affect the decision

Specifications are useful only when they are compared for machines doing comparable work. The following figures are a single model example from Caterpillar’s current US CB16 product page, accessed October 13, 2026; they are not averages for all tandem rollers.

Specification or feature Why it matters Example or qualification
Operating weight Influences static kneading, transport requirements and the load applied to the mat or soil CB16 standard operating weight: 31,941 lb
Compaction width Determines coverage per pass and the number of longitudinal joints or overlaps required CB16 standard compaction width: 84 in
Static linear load Shows the static load distributed along the drum width; useful for comparing like machines and applications CB16 static linear load: 204 lb/in
Amplitude and frequency Set the character and timing of vibratory input; lift thickness and material response determine the suitable range CB13 material describes separate thin- and thick-lift settings; exact values depend on the model and configuration
Centrifugal force Indicates the vibratory force available at a specified setting; it must be read with amplitude, frequency and machine weight Check the exact model specification; no category-wide value is established here
Drum type Determines the contact pattern and material compatibility Smooth drum is identified for the cited CS19 listing; cohesive-soil use requires the optional padfoot shell described by Caterpillar

When requesting quotations, ask for all of these values in the same units and for the same operating configuration. A comparison that mixes a tandem roller’s static linear load with a soil compactor’s nominal centrifugal force does not produce a universal ranking.

A step-by-step selection method

  1. Identify the material. Write down whether the machine will compact hot-mix asphalt, granular soil, aggregate base, cohesive soil or more than one material.
  2. Define the work phase. State whether the roller is for breakdown, intermediate or finish rolling on asphalt, or for subgrade, fill or base preparation in earthwork.
  3. Read the acceptance specification. Note required density, smoothness, lift thickness, moisture condition, pass pattern and any limits on vibration. The roller is a means of achieving the specification, not the specification itself.
  4. Choose the configuration. Start with a tandem vibratory roller for asphalt-oriented work. Start with a single-drum soil compactor for granular soil. For cohesive soil, confirm the padfoot shell requirement and availability.
  5. Compare like-for-like metrics. Collect operating weight, working width, static linear load, amplitude, frequency and centrifugal force for the exact models under consideration.
  6. Check access and logistics. Measure lane, shoulder, trench or site access; confirm transport weight, loading method, turning space and any limits on axle loads.
  7. Confirm local support. Ask the dealer or rental company about the exact machine, attachments, service coverage, operator orientation, insurance, delivery and pickup terms.
  8. Document the rolling method. Record the selected vibration setting, speed, pass sequence and any temperature or moisture limits so the operator and quality team are working from the same plan.

Using a tandem roller on asphalt

Set the machine for the lift

Thin and thick asphalt lifts may require different amplitude and frequency settings. Use the setting table for the exact roller and mix rather than carrying a setting from another model. The CB13 information supports this lift-sensitive approach, but it does not provide an independent comparison of outcomes between machines.

Protect the paving sequence

The roller must fit the paver’s production rate and the time available for compaction. A machine that is too slow, too narrow or unavailable during the temperature window can undermine an otherwise suitable specification. Confirm the rolling pattern with the paving supervisor and project engineer.

Use width and load deliberately

The CB16’s 84-inch standard compaction width and 204 lb/in static linear load illustrate the kind of data that should appear in a paving equipment request. They tell you how much mat is covered and how the static load is distributed, but they do not predict density or smoothness without the mix, lift and operating method.

Using a single-drum compactor on soil and base

Separate granular and cohesive material

Granular soil is the direct application cited for the CS19. Cohesive-soil use is conditional on the padfoot shell. Have the site team identify soil behavior before the machine arrives; a generic label such as “dirt” is not enough to select a drum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match drum and lift to the method

Confirm the drum type, operating weight, amplitude, frequency and centrifugal force for the planned lift thickness. The project method should establish moisture conditioning, pass count and acceptance testing. Do not treat the machine’s advertised force as proof that the finished layer will pass testing.

Plan for changing conditions

Soil moisture, grading and lift thickness can change within the same project. If the material changes from granular fill to cohesive borrow, stop and verify whether the installed drum and selected setting remain appropriate. A padfoot shell may be an option on a compatible machine, but it must be identified and fitted before the relevant work begins.

Compaction Meter Value: useful control aid, not acceptance proof

Caterpillar describes Compaction Meter Value as an accelerometer-derived, unitless indication of material stiffness while vibration is active. That makes it useful for observing trends, locating softer areas and following a documented rolling method.

CMV should not be presented as proof by itself that a layer meets the project’s acceptance criteria. Treat it as an aid alongside the specified density or stiffness test, the approved pass pattern and the quality-control records. If the project specification does not define how CMV is to be used, ask the engineer before making it a pass/fail threshold.

Renting or buying the roller

When rental deserves first consideration

Rental is often worth investigating when the work is short-term, seasonal, or too irregular to justify year-round ownership. Caterpillar’s CB16 product page exposes daily-to-monthly rental rates and local inventory inquiries, but actual availability and terms are location-specific and can change.

Request a delivered quote rather than comparing only the advertised daily rate. Include transport, minimum rental period, damage waiver or insurance, fuel policy, cleaning, operator support, attachments, service response and pickup charges.

When ownership may fit

Ownership can make sense when utilization is high and predictable, the same configuration is used repeatedly, and the business can support storage, preventive maintenance, transport and repairs. Compare the expected working hours with the cost of downtime and the value of having the exact drum and width available when scheduled.

Used equipment can reduce the purchase price, but verify hours, maintenance records, drum condition, vibration-system operation and whether the required attachment or shell is included. Dealer stock and pricing are volatile, so confirm them locally.

Common selection mistakes and fixes

  • Choosing by drum count alone. Fix: identify the material, work phase and exact model configuration before comparing machines.
  • Using a smooth drum on cohesive soil without checking the method. Fix: confirm whether a padfoot shell is required and available for the selected soil compactor.
  • Assuming every tandem roller is asphalt-only. Fix: read the manufacturer’s stated application range; the CC2.7 GC is an example of a compact utility roller described for asphalt through granular base.
  • Comparing unlike specifications. Fix: compare operating weight, width, static linear load, amplitude, frequency and centrifugal force within the same application context.
  • Copying a vibration setting from another machine. Fix: use the exact model’s setting guidance and account for lift thickness and material.
  • Treating CMV as a pass/fail result. Fix: use CMV as an indication while vibration is active and rely on the project’s specified acceptance test.
  • Ignoring transport and local support. Fix: obtain delivered rental or ownership costs, confirm service coverage and verify the machine’s actual location and availability.

Practical decision examples

New asphalt parking lot

The work is a defined asphalt paving operation with thin and thick lifts. Begin with a tandem vibratory roller, then select amplitude and frequency using the exact model’s guidance for each lift. Confirm the rolling pattern, temperature window, width and static load against the project specification.

Granular trench backfill and aggregate base

The material is granular and the work is earthwork rather than mat finishing. Begin with a single-drum vibratory soil compactor. Compare drum width, operating weight and available force with the lift thickness and access limits, and document the pass pattern required for acceptance.

Clay-rich embankment

The material is cohesive. A single-drum machine may be appropriate only in a configuration approved for that soil; for the cited CS19, Caterpillar identifies the optional padfoot shell as the condition for cohesive-soil use. Confirm the shell, soil method and testing plan before delivery.

Small utility contractor with mixed surfaces

The crew alternates between asphalt repairs and granular base. Investigate a compact utility roller whose manufacturer specifically covers both applications, such as the cited CC2.7 GC example. Validate the machine’s width, transport arrangements and productivity for the actual proportion of asphalt and base work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions to answer before you order or reserve a machine

  • What material will be compacted, and is it granular or cohesive?
  • Is the task asphalt paving, soil preparation, aggregate-base work or a mixture?
  • What lift thickness, moisture or temperature limits and acceptance tests apply?
  • What exact model and configuration are being offered?
  • Is the drum smooth, or is a padfoot shell installed and included?
  • What are the operating weight, compaction width, static linear load, amplitude, frequency and centrifugal-force figures?
  • What delivery, pickup, service, insurance and operator-support terms apply?

Bottom line

For a conventional asphalt paving operation, investigate a tandem vibratory roller first. For granular soil and base preparation, investigate a single-drum vibratory soil compactor first. If the soil is cohesive, verify the required padfoot configuration; if the job mixes asphalt and base, check a compact utility roller’s stated applications. Make the final decision from the exact model, settings, material and project specification—not from the roller category by itself.
