Tado° AI Assist is a software and subscription service, not a new thermostat. Announced on 23 September 2025, it adds learning-based heating automation to compatible tado° X systems. Owners of tado° V3+ and older products use the differently named Auto-Assist service instead.
The practical difference depends on your hardware, boiler or heat pump, home routines and country. AI Assist can automate preheating, adapt room heating, detect likely open windows, provide energy estimates and flag possible heating problems—but it is not a universal free upgrade and it does not turn a V3+ installation into tado° X.

What AI Assist actually does
Adaptive Heating
Adaptive Heating learns how quickly each room warms up and cools down, then adjusts the behaviour of compatible tado° radiator valves. Tado° says the system needs several hours of heating operation initially and continues adapting over several days. It can also keep monitoring changes such as a new boiler or heat pump.

Preheat Before Arrival and presence-based heating
AI Assist can learn household arrival patterns and preheat the home before people return. It is designed to use available presence and location information so heating can respond to irregular routines rather than relying only on a fixed schedule.
This is not a guarantee of precise arrival-time prediction. It can be affected by location permissions, changing work or school schedules, holidays and the number of people in the household. Review the app’s location and presence settings if preheating starts too early or too late.
Open Window Detection
The system can infer that a window is open from temperature and environmental changes, then pause or reduce heating in the affected room according to your configured behaviour. It does not require a dedicated window-contact sensor, although a household may use one separately.
Rapid temperature changes caused by ventilation or other conditions can sometimes resemble an open window. Check the setting before assuming the thermostat or valve is defective.
Flow Temperature Optimization
For a compatible OpenTherm boiler, AI Assist can adjust the maximum flow temperature according to outside temperature. The aim is to avoid running the boiler hotter than necessary while maintaining the requested room temperature.

This is not a universal boiler feature. The boiler, wiring and control protocol must support the required connection. If Flow Temperature Optimization is unavailable, check the system against tado°’s compatibility information.
Energy IQ
Energy IQ uses thermostat data to estimate consumption, forecast usage and present reports and graphics. These figures are modeled estimates—not necessarily readings from a gas meter or certified heat meter—and should not be used to settle billing disputes.
Tado°’s potential-savings claims should likewise be treated as estimates. Actual results depend on the building, weather, energy prices, insulation, heating-system efficiency and household behaviour.
Care & Protect
Care & Protect uses heating data to identify possible system problems and can provide notifications, Heating Activity information and Self Fix Guides. It is diagnostic assistance, not a replacement for a qualified heating engineer.
Holiday Mode, Air Comfort and history
Holiday Mode is intended to manage heating while residents are away rather than simply switching everything off. Exact behaviour—such as frost protection or minimum temperatures—depends on the current app settings and heating system.

AI Assist also includes Air Comfort insights relating to temperature, humidity and air freshness where supported. Tado° says AI Assist provides up to 13 months of heating-activity history, compared with one day without AI Assist, subject to exceptions for some legacy customers.

Which tado° owners get AI Assist?

At launch, existing Auto-Assist customers using tado° X were reported as being upgraded to AI Assist without an additional charge. Confirm the entitlement shown in your own tado° account, because subscription arrangements and legacy exceptions can differ.
Tado° also identifies an exception for some installations made before October 2025. That does not mean every AI Assist feature is free for every legacy customer; check the feature-specific wording in your account.
Do you need to replace your thermostat?
Usually, no. The headline describes an automation and subscription layer, not a mandatory hardware replacement. However, some functions require tado° X devices or a compatible boiler interface.
Tado° X is not backward-compatible with V3+ and older product lines. A Bridge X and X devices cannot simply be mixed into an existing V3+ installation as interchangeable accessories. Before buying hardware, use the official compatibility checker and verify the boiler connection, radiator valves, heat-pump model and number of heating circuits.

Heat-pump owners should take particular care: tado°’s documentation says Heat Pump Optimizer X supports one heating circuit per home. A multi-circuit system may therefore be a poor fit without a confirmed installation plan.
How to activate AI Assist
- Open the tado° app.
- Go to Settings.
- Select AI Assist.
- Choose the monthly or annual plan shown for your market.
- Complete the subscription through the applicable account or app-store billing flow.
- Return to the feature settings and review or enable the individual automations.
Adaptive Heating may need hours of heating operation and several days of learning before its behaviour settles.
If AI Assist does not appear
- Confirm that the home contains tado° X rather than V3+ hardware.
- Check that the app is signed in to the correct tado° account and home.
- Look for Auto-Assist if you use V3+ equipment.
- Check boiler, radiator-valve and heat-pump compatibility.
- Remember that Flow Temperature Optimization requires a compatible OpenTherm setup.
- Do not factory-reset equipment simply because a subscription tile is missing.
What does AI Assist cost?
Pricing is market-specific and can change. The official European tado° product page currently provides a price signal of €3.99 per month. UK launch coverage from September 2025 reported £3.99 per month or £29.99 per year. Those figures should not be treated as a universal or current US price.
Check the price displayed in your tado° account or local app store before subscribing. If you compare monthly and annual billing, use prices from the same country and currency; the UK launch figures would make the annual plan £17.89 cheaper than paying £3.99 monthly for 12 months, but that calculation does not establish current pricing elsewhere.

Is AI Assist worth paying for?
It is most compelling when your household has irregular arrival times, several rooms with different usage patterns, multiple tado° X radiator valves, or a compatible OpenTherm boiler. Longer history, automated presence-based heating and system alerts may also justify the recurring cost for people who prefer less manual control.
It is less compelling for a home with one thermostat and a predictable schedule that already works well. It may also offer limited value if your boiler or heat pump cannot use the relevant advanced controls, or if you object to paying a subscription for features associated with hardware you already own.
Evaluate comfort and energy use over several days or weeks rather than expecting an immediate saving. Automation can reduce manual adjustments, but it can also make it less obvious why the heating is running. Review permissions and settings if you are uncomfortable with arrival-based heating, and treat energy estimates as guidance rather than measured consumption.
Common problems to check first
- One room remains cold: check the radiator valve installation, valve compatibility, room assignment, target temperature and whether the radiator is connected to an operating heat source.
- Preheating is mistimed: allow the system time to learn and review location permissions and recent routine changes.
- Heating pauses unexpectedly: inspect Open Window Detection and consider whether ventilation or a rapid temperature change triggered it.
- Flow-temperature control is missing: verify that the boiler uses OpenTherm and exposes the required control interface.
- A heat-pump setup has several circuits: check compatibility carefully because the documented Heat Pump Optimizer X limit is one heating circuit per home.
- Care & Protect reports a fault: use the guidance as a starting point and arrange professional inspection where necessary.
The bottom line
AI Assist is a meaningful automation upgrade for the right tado° X installation, but it is not a universal free firmware update, a new thermostat or a guarantee of lower bills. First identify whether your system is tado° X or V3+, then check the boiler or heat-pump compatibility and the subscription price shown in your market. For V3+ owners, the relevant service remains Auto-Assist and the feature set is not identical.
