Southern Railway’s first phase of the Chengalpattu–Tambaram fourth-line project is reported to cover 21.5 km between Chengalpattu and Guduvancheri. The remaining 8.7 km to Tambaram is planned as a second phase, making the reported full project 30.2 km. No completion date has been announced in the parliamentary status available for the project.
What the first phase includes
The New Indian Express reports that the first phase will build a fourth railway line for 21.5 km from Chengalpattu to Guduvancheri. It forms part of a 30.2-km project between Chengalpattu and Tambaram; the remaining 8.7 km, from Guduvancheri to Tambaram, is described as phase two. Reported alignment and design
The New Indian Express says the proposed fourth line will run east of the existing three lines, toward GST Road. It reports that the alignment shifted from the west because of land constraints, nearby road-overbridge pillars and residential areas. The line is also reported to be electrified and designed for speeds up to 130 km/h. That is a design figure, not a stated operating speed or a promise about passenger journey times. The available figures refer to different estimates and should not be treated as interchangeable:

The small difference between the reported ₹273 crore phase cost and the mirror’s ₹273.26 crore Package II estimate reflects separate source figures; neither should be silently substituted for the other.
What is known about the tender
The InfraLens listing mirror describes Package II as broad-gauge line construction spanning chainages 39.998–61.494 km and includes civil engineering, signalling and telecommunications, electrical works, and 2×25 kV overhead electrification. It lists 23 November 2026 as the bid deadline. Because this is a third-party mirror, prospective bidders should rely on the controlling IREPS tender documents and any amendments for the authoritative scope, deadlines and current status. Has Southern Railway announced an opening date?
No completion date appears in the 27 March 2026 Rajya Sabha answer. That answer says the 30-km Tambaram–Chengalpattu fourth line was recently sanctioned and work had been taken up; it does not set out a delivery schedule.
