Choose sliding doors when your extension is primarily a picture window and you want no folded stack at the opening edge. Choose bifold doors when opening most of the wall for entertaining and moving between house and garden matters more than uninterrupted glass. For a 4.8 m opening, the decisive evidence is the supplier’s measured clear-opening and stack drawings—not whether the quotation says “four-panel slider” or “six-panel bifold.”
Start with how you will use the opening
Door type is a consequence of daily use. Stand in the proposed extension and decide which of these experiences matters most:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Framing the garden all year: a sliding arrangement generally presents larger glazed panels and fewer visible frame divisions when shut.
- Opening the wall for parties: bifold leaves fold together and can expose most of the aperture, subject to the actual configuration.
- Frequent everyday access: check whether the chosen system includes a convenient traffic door, which way it opens, and how it is secured.
- Keeping furniture and paths clear: a slider avoids a folded panel stack, while a bifold needs a planned stacking zone indoors or outdoors.
A discussion about a 4.8 m rear opening and “four-panel sliding versus six-panel bifold” is one homeowner’s example, not a representative survey. Panel count alone cannot predict the view, clear opening, threshold or operation of a specific product.
How the two systems move
Sliding doors
Sliding leaves travel horizontally on a track. When the doors are open, the leaves remain in front of, or alongside, other leaves; they do not fold away from the opening. That means part of the aperture is occupied by glass and frames, but there is no concertina stack projecting into the room or garden.

The arrangement can be useful where a sofa, dining table or narrow terrace sits close to the opening. It also suits a view-led design because a typical slider uses fewer moving frame junctions than a multi-leaf bifold. The word “typical” is important: interlocking meeting stiles, fixed panes, frame depth and the selected track all alter the sightline.
Bifold doors
Bifold leaves are hinged together. When opened, they concertina and stack at one or both jambs. This can make most of the aperture available, but the folded leaves occupy a defined area and may sit inside, outside or across a corner, depending on the system.
A bifold can therefore connect a kitchen or living area directly to the garden for occasional entertaining. The cost of that opening effect is planning where the stack goes, how far it projects, and whether it obstructs a path, planting bed, downpipe, blind, radiator or furniture.

What the comparison means for a 4.8 m opening
Do not select a four-panel or six-panel layout from a brochure sketch. Ask for a dimensioned elevation and plan showing each leaf, mullion, meeting stile, track, hinge, handle and stack position. The same nominal width can produce materially different usable openings when the outer frames and fixed leaves change.
| Decision axis | Sliding system | Bifold system | Check on the quotation |
|---|---|---|---|
| View when closed | Often larger glazed panels and fewer visible divisions. | More panel divisions may be visible. | Exact sightline drawing, glass dimensions and frame widths for the quoted configuration. |
| Clear opening | Leaves stay on their track, so they do not fold clear of the aperture. | Leaves fold and stack, potentially opening most of the aperture. | Measured clear width with doors open, not a generic percentage. |
| Space at the edge | No bifold stack, although tracks and sliding leaves still need room. | Requires a folding stack indoors or outdoors. | Furniture plan, circulation route, garden path and stack projection. |
| Threshold | A track threshold is part of the sliding arrangement. | Some systems offer low or flush-threshold options. | Accessibility, drainage, weather exposure and the manufacturer’s permitted detail. |
| Thermal performance | Fewer frame junctions may help in some designs, but the whole system and glass determine performance. | Varies substantially with frame, seals, glass and configuration. | Whole-door U-value for the actual size, not a product-family headline. |
| Ventilation and access | Can usually be opened partly, subject to the track and panel arrangement. | May include a separate traffic door on some layouts. | Daily entry route, purge ventilation, locking points and escape strategy. |
| Cost | No reliable like-for-like installed comparison is established. | No reliable like-for-like installed comparison is established. | Written quotes using identical dimensions, glass, finish, threshold and installation scope. |
The qualitative comparison in Homebuilding’s article, dated 25 May 2021, is useful for understanding the mechanisms but is not a current specification sheet. Supplier guidance likewise states that performance depends on the product and specification. Treat each quotation as its own design, not as proof that one category always wins.
Views, sightlines and daylight
When closed, sliding doors are commonly selected for a broad, relatively uninterrupted view. A large pane can make the garden feel closer and reduce the number of vertical interruptions across the eye line. Bifolds divide the same wall into more leaves, so additional stiles and hinges are visible.

A slider with several narrow leaves can have more divisions than a carefully configured bifold, while a bifold with wide leaves can look less busy than a heavily framed sliding system. Request sightline drawings at the eye height relevant to your seating and standing positions. Check the meeting stiles at the centre and the outer jambs as well as the frame at floor level.

Consider the view with curtains, blinds, insect screens and external shading included. A narrow frame on paper may be hidden by a blind headbox or by a structural post required at a corner. Your designer should coordinate the door elevation with the roof, beams, electrical points and rainwater goods before the opening is formed.
Clear opening and panel-stack planning
Measure the usable width
“4.8 m wide” normally describes a structural or overall frame dimension. It is not the width a person can walk through. The clear opening is reduced by outer frames, fixed panes, interlocks, the traffic-door frame and any panel that remains across the opening. Require the manufacturer to state:
- overall frame width and height;
- clear passage width with the normal access leaf open;
- the maximum opening with every operable leaf open;
- which leaves are fixed, sliding, hinged or traffic-door leaves;
- where handles, restrictors and fingersafe gaps occur.
Do not substitute a marketing claim such as “opens to 90%” for a measured dimension. The actual result depends on the number and width of leaves, the jamb arrangement, corner details and the direction in which the system opens.

For bifolds, draw the folded leaves at their real depth, including handles and any projecting cill. Mark the swept area on the floor and garden plan. Check that the stack does not hit a wall return, kitchen island, dining chair, planter, gate, drain channel or external step. If leaves stack outside, allow for weather exposure and a path that remains usable when the doors are open. If they stack inside, check curtains, blinds and furniture clearances.
For sliders, show the track line and the position of every leaf when open. The panels do not disappear, so confirm that the remaining glass and frame do not block the preferred route or create a collision with a table or worktop.
Thresholds, drainage and accessibility
A slider’s track threshold is part of its weather and running system. Some bifolds can be specified with a low or flush threshold, but “flush” is not a complete design detail. The junction still needs a compliant fall, drainage channel, damp-proofing, seals, end dams and a manufacturer-approved installation method.
Ask the designer and installer to show a section through the threshold and the external paving. Confirm the finished floor level before ordering the doors; changing the paving or screed later can leave the track too low, too high or without adequate drainage. Discuss wheelchair and pushchair access, trip edges, cleaning access and how water is kept away from the internal finish.

Weather exposure matters especially on a garden elevation facing prevailing rain. A low threshold can require more careful drainage and may have limits on exposure or size. The manufacturer’s permitted detail and the building-control professional’s advice take precedence over a generic catalogue illustration.

Thermal performance: compare the whole door
There is no defensible universal thermal winner between sliders and bifolds. A nominal U-value may describe a particular frame, glass build-up and test size rather than the doors being quoted for your extension.
Request the whole-door thermal data for the exact width, height, number of leaves, glass specification, spacer, frame, seals and threshold. Record whether the figure is for the complete door or glazing alone. Ask how corner posts, fixed side screens and any changed panel sizes affect the declared result.
The UK climate also affects how the doors are used. Edward Stobart observes: “It is mainly due to the UK climate and the fact that bifolds are likely to be closed for far greater periods of the year than they are open.” That is a reminder to assess the closed-door performance, air leakage, solar-control glass and shading—not just the brief period when the wall is open.
- Compare whole-door data at the dimensions you are buying.
- Check the glass’s solar-control and low-emissivity specification alongside its visible-light effect.
- Coordinate roof overhangs, external shading and blinds to manage summer gains.
- Ask whether the quoted threshold and installation detail are included in the tested or declared assembly.
Ventilation, access and security
A large opening serves more than a view. Decide how occupants will enter when the doors are closed, how the room will be ventilated in mild weather, and what happens during a power cut if electric locks or blinds are proposed.
Sliding systems can provide partial opening if the track and locking arrangement allow it. A bifold may offer a separate traffic door, giving a normal-size daily entrance without folding every leaf. Confirm the handing, sill height, handle positions, key operation, cylinder protection, restrictors and the route to an alternative exit.
Do not assume that a traffic door is included because the brochure shows one. It can change panel widths, sightlines, clear opening and stack position. Put the selected configuration and hardware schedule in the contract.
Safety glazing and overheating requirements
Glazing safety
In England, Building Regulations Schedule 1 Requirement K4 addresses glazing likely to be contacted while people move around a building. Where the requirement applies, the glazing must be designed so that, if broken, it is unlikely to cause injury, or it must resist impact or be shielded or protected. The precise application depends on the location and design; it is not a blanket instruction to specify one glass type for every door.

Ask for the safety-glazing classification and marking for each pane, including low-level glass beside a traffic door and any side screen. Your designer or building-control professional should confirm the provisions applicable to the project and the relevant UK nation.

Overheating and orientation
Large areas of south-, east- or west-facing glass can create overheating risk even when the doors have good insulation. Approved Document O FAQ guidance includes a particular equal-glazing-facade scenario in which the orientation producing the higher, more stringent standard is used for the stated assessment. That rule does not determine the overheating result for every extension.
Have the project assessed using its actual orientation, glazing area, opening restrictions, shading, occupancy and ventilation strategy. The assessment may influence glass selection, external shading, window opening area and the size of the glazed wall.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Building regulations and project approvals
Planning Portal summarises that building regulations for external doors address thermal performance as well as safety, air supply, means of escape and ventilation. Requirements and technical guidance differ among England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and they can vary with the building’s existing construction and the extension design.
Before fabrication, confirm who is responsible for:
- structural calculations for the opening and lintel or steel;
- the threshold, damp-proofing, drainage and finished floor levels;
- thermal, ventilation and overheating calculations;
- safety glazing and impact-risk locations;
- fire, escape and smoke-separation implications where relevant;
- building-control notices, inspections and certificates.
A door supplier’s compliance statement does not replace project-specific approval. Keep the approved drawings, performance declarations, installation instructions and inspection records with the extension documents.
Cost: obtain a genuinely comparable quotation
No robust, like-for-like installed price comparison establishes that sliders or bifolds are cheaper for a 4.8 m opening. The price is shaped by the opening size, frame material, glass, colour, panel count, hardware, threshold, structural work, making good, delivery and installation scope.
Send the same brief to each supplier and require an itemised response. At minimum, keep these variables constant:

A practical selection process
- Map the furniture and garden. Draw the kitchen, dining table, sofas, radiators, blinds, paths, steps and planting at the proposed scale.
- Choose the primary outcome. Mark whether the priority is the closed view, the largest open passage, everyday access or the simplest edge condition.
- Test both movements. On plan, draw sliding leaves in their open positions and bifold leaves folded to each possible stack side.
- Request dimensioned elevations. Check sightlines, fixed panes, meeting stiles, handles, traffic doors and corner posts.
- Resolve the threshold section. Set finished floor and paving levels, drainage, accessibility and weather exposure before ordering.
- Obtain project-specific performance data. Record whole-door thermal information, glass safety details and any overheating assessment inputs.
- Confirm approvals and installation scope. Have the designer, structural engineer, installer and building-control professional agree the details in writing.
- Compare final quotes. Use identical dimensions, finish, glass, hardware, threshold and labour scope so the decision is not distorted by missing items.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by panel count
Four sliding panels and six bifold panels describe a layout, not the result. Ask for clear width, sightlines and stack dimensions.
Assuming “flush” means maintenance-free or waterproof
A flush threshold still needs drainage, falls, seals and an approved junction. Review the section detail rather than relying on the label.
Ignoring the stack zone
A bifold stack can block a path, collide with furniture or reduce the usable garden. Draw it at full depth before signing off the opening.
Comparing headline U-values
Use the whole-door figure for the actual dimensions and glass. A family-level claim may not represent a wide, multi-leaf installation.
Ordering before the structural opening is fixed
Large doors have tight manufacturing tolerances. Coordinate the steel or lintel, reveals, floor build-up and plaster finishes, then remeasure the finished opening as required by the supplier.
Treating safety and overheating as afterthoughts
Confirm impact-risk glazing and the project’s overheating strategy during design. Retrofitting glass, shading or ventilation after installation is disruptive and may not solve the underlying constraint.
Which should you choose?
Select sliding doors if your extension is organised around a permanent garden view, you want broad panes with fewer divisions, and there is no convenient place for folded leaves. Accept that some panels remain across the aperture when open and that the track threshold needs careful detailing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSelect bifold doors if opening most of the wall is the central objective, you can reserve a stack zone, and a traffic door or concertina operation suits everyday use. Accept the additional visible divisions and resolve the folded leaves, threshold, drainage and weather exposure in the design.
For either choice, the better system is the one whose measured opening, sightlines, threshold, thermal data, safety glazing and installation details fit the actual extension. Ask the designer to place both options on the same plan; the drawing usually resolves the argument faster than a generic “slider versus bifold” claim.
