Barricades, detour arrows, police or flagger directions, and variable-message signs are the active traffic control for a work zone. A navigation app can help you plan before leaving and show general congestion, but it is supplemental route advice and may not reflect a temporary closure. Set your route while parked, then follow the signs and roadway conditions you encounter.
The rule that resolves the conflict
When an app recommends continuing through a road that has been closed or restricted, the app does not override the work-zone control. Slow down and follow the posted detour, barricades, lane-control devices, and directions from authorized personnel. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) guidance tells drivers to follow a recommended route while always obeying traffic signs and advisories, including detour signs and variable-message signs.

This is not a choice between “old-fashioned signs” and “technology.” It is a hierarchy of information: official, active traffic control tells you how to proceed at that location; an app offers route guidance based on data that can lag behind a temporary change. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) describes signs and changeable-message signs as ways to communicate current closures, queues, delays, and alternate routes. Consumer-app coverage of those changes depends on the provider and the region, and the federal guidance reviewed does not establish that any app has complete or instantaneous work-zone data.
What a posted detour means
It is an established temporary route
A detour is not merely a suggestion to find another street. FHWA guidance describes detour signs as directing motorists away from the closure, through the temporary route, and back to the original route. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), 11th Edition, Section 6H.04, Guidance 01 (published December 2023), states: “The DETOUR (W20-2) sign (see Figure 6H-1) should be used in advance of a road user detour over a different roadway or route.”

Expect the sequence to include advance warning, a turn or lane instruction, reassurance or confirmation along the alternate route, and a direction back toward the normal road when the detour ends. Missing one sign does not make the app’s route authoritative; continue cautiously and look for the next official instruction.
Signs can carry newer information than your route screen
Work zones change as crews move, lanes close, or traffic backs up. A variable-message sign can announce a closure, a queue, a changed lane pattern, or a different alternate route at the time you reach it. Treat that message as current, location-specific information. Do not assume that a route calculated earlier—or recalculated automatically—has incorporated the same change.
How signs and navigation apps differ
| Question | Posted controls and official advisories | Navigation app |
|---|---|---|
| Authority | Establish how traffic should move through the active work zone, including detours and changing instructions. | Provides route guidance; it does not supersede traffic-control devices or authorized directions. |
| Timeliness at the site | Can communicate current closures, queues, delays, and diversions through signs and changeable-message signs. | May reflect temporary conditions, but coverage is provider- and region-dependent; complete coverage is not established. |
| Best use | Follow while approaching and traveling through the work zone. | Plan before departure and understand broad route or congestion conditions. |
| Driver responsibility | Read, obey, and adapt to signs, markings, barricades, and personnel. | Enter information before driving and avoid interacting with the device while moving. |
Use the app before you leave
- Check the planned route while parked. Look for a closure, work-zone warning, or alternate route before starting. If the app offers a way to review the route, note major turns and the likely detour area rather than relying on spoken prompts alone.
- Allow for changing conditions. A planned route is a forecast, not a promise that the road will remain open. Leave time to slow down, read signs, and follow a new official instruction.
- Configure vehicle information when it applies. FMCSA’s truck-and-bus-specific GPS guidance recommends a navigation system intended for the vehicle and entering vehicle details. That advice is for commercial vehicles; it should not be treated as a requirement for an ordinary passenger car.
- Secure the device and start navigation before moving. FMCSA says not to type or enter information into a navigation system while driving. If the route must be changed, pull over at a legal, safe location before touching the device.
These steps make the app useful without turning it into a competing traffic-control system. Once you enter the work zone, your attention belongs on the road, not on resolving a disagreement with the screen.

What to do as you approach the work zone
Reduce speed and scan early
Begin looking for advance-warning signs, lane shifts, cones, drums, barricades, flaggers, and electronic messages before the point where the app suggests a turn. Work-zone guidance emphasizes attention to the roadway and current conditions. Keep enough space to stop if a lane closes or traffic queues unexpectedly.
Follow the complete detour sequence
Take the signed turn, remain on the indicated route, and watch for confirmation signs or additional arrows. Do not leave the detour simply because the app draws a shorter path through a residential street, service road, or the closed segment. A route that looks open on a map may be physically blocked, restricted to local access, or unsuitable for the traffic being redirected.
Treat a variable-message sign as an update
If an electronic sign gives a delay, closure, lane, or alternate-route instruction that differs from the app, follow the sign. Its purpose is to communicate conditions at that work zone. Continue to monitor the next sign rather than assuming the first message describes the entire route.

When the detour itself looks blocked or confusing
Do not improvise a turn based only on an app when the official route appears unclear. Use this decision sequence:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Slow down and stay predictable. Do not make a sudden turn or stop in a live lane to study the map.
- Look for the next official direction. Detours are signed in advance and through the alternate route; a missing or obscured sign may be followed by another instruction farther ahead.
- Continue only where the roadway is open and the control devices permit. Never move a barricade or enter a lane marked closed.
- Stop only at a safe, legal location. Once parked away from moving traffic, review the route or contact the responsible road authority for clarification.
- Follow an authorized person’s direction. A flagger, police officer, or other authorized official at the site may direct traffic differently from a previously posted path. Their instruction applies at that location.
This approach is a practical application of sign-obedience and work-zone-attention guidance. It avoids turning a data mismatch into a risky maneuver.
Why an app may disagree with the road
Temporary changes are difficult to represent
Road construction can change faster than a map database or routing feed. A closure may begin after your route was calculated, last only part of a day, apply to one direction, or change as crews relocate. The app may therefore continue to draw the normal road even while physical signs direct traffic elsewhere.

The map may lack the restriction’s detail
A line on a map does not show every barricade, lane taper, flagger, weight restriction, or local-access condition. It also may not distinguish a road that is technically present from one that is unavailable to through traffic. Use the app for general context, not as proof that you may pass a sign or barrier.
Automatic rerouting can make the conflict worse
When you miss a turn or the app detects delay, it may suggest a shortcut that leaves the signed detour. Re-routing does not cancel the work-zone instructions. Wait until you are safely stopped before accepting a new route, and reject any option that conflicts with signs or authorized directions.

Commercial vehicles need an additional planning check
Large trucks and buses face constraints that a passenger-car route may not account for, such as vehicle dimensions, weight, clearance, or turning space. FMCSA’s truck-and-bus GPS FAQ advises using a navigation system designed for the vehicle and configuring the relevant vehicle details. That is a planning safeguard for commercial drivers, not a blanket rule for every driver.

Even a correctly configured commercial-vehicle system remains supplemental at the work zone. Posted restrictions, a police direction, a flagger, or a variable-message sign can require an immediate change. If the signed detour appears unsuitable for the vehicle, slow down, avoid entering a constrained segment, and obtain clarification from an authorized official or the responsible road authority rather than choosing an unapproved shortcut.
Common mistakes and safer corrections
- Following the blue line through a barricade: Stop before the closure and take the signed detour.
- Assuming a familiar road is still open: Give current signs priority over memory or an earlier trip.
- Typing while moving: Set the route before departure; pull over safely for any change.
- Making a sudden U-turn at a missed detour: Continue cautiously to a safe place or the next official instruction.
- Ignoring an electronic message because the app shows no delay: Treat the message as current, site-specific information.
- Using a passenger-car route for a truck or bus: Configure a vehicle-appropriate system and still obey all work-zone controls.
- Leaving the detour after one turn: Follow the signs through the route until official guidance returns you to the original roadway.
What this guidance does—and does not—establish
The federal sources cited here provide United States guidance on navigation safety, work-zone information, and detour signing. They support following signs and advisories, researching a route in advance, using available detours, and avoiding driver interaction with navigation systems while moving.
They do not establish that every consumer app receives every closure, nor do they provide a universal statement of the legal penalty for ignoring a detour in every jurisdiction. Local traffic laws, posted restrictions, and enforcement practices can vary. For a particular project, the signs and directions at the site are the information you must act on; location-specific questions should be directed to the responsible road agency.
A simple rule for every trip
Plan with the app, drive by the signs. Before departure, use navigation to understand the route and possible congestion. At the work zone, obey detour signs, barricades, variable-message signs, markings, and authorized personnel. If the screen and the road disagree, the road’s official traffic control wins. Pull over before changing settings, and never let a recalculation tempt you into a closed or unsafe lane.
