A total station is the safer choice for millimetre-sensitive structural layout, interiors, dense urban sites, heavy canopy and any location where satellite visibility is unreliable. For most mixed projects, the best answer is a hybrid workflow: use RTK for open-area coverage, then a total station for critical points and independent checks.
What each instrument actually does
RTK GNSS/GPS
Real-time kinematic (RTK) positioning computes a rover’s position from carrier-phase and code-phase satellite measurements, corrected by a base station or network service. With a fixed solution and a reliable correction link, the rover can provide centimetre-level coordinates without requiring a line of sight between the instrument and every point. A crew can walk directly to widely spaced points, record coordinates and stake positions over a large site with comparatively few setups.

RTK is a coordinate-based method. Its result depends on satellite geometry, correction latency, initialization, antenna height, the quality of the control coordinates and the way the point is occupied. “GPS” is common field language, but survey-grade construction equipment normally uses multiple GNSS constellations; the relevant issue is the quality of the RTK solution, not the name printed on the receiver.

A total station measures angles and distances to a prism, then computes the prism’s position from a known instrument setup. It requires a clear optical line of sight to the prism, but it does not require a view of the sky. That makes it useful inside buildings, beside tall façades, under dense tree canopy and in urban “street canyon” conditions where satellite signals are blocked or reflected.

Total-station layout is geometry-based. The instrument must be set over a known point or positioned by a properly checked resection, and the prism must be held at the correct height and target location. A disturbed setup or weak control network can transfer a systematic error to every point observed from it, so orientation and independent checks are essential.
Accuracy: the tolerance on the drawing decides
There is no universal winner because “accurate enough” is determined by the project tolerance and by the conditions in which the point is measured. Main Roads Western Australia describes total-station capture as able to achieve better than ±20 mm horizontally and ±15 mm vertically. The same guideline gives RTK GPS tolerances generally of ±20 mm horizontal and ±30 mm height when controlled procedures are followed. Those are guidance values, not a promise for every occupation or every site.
The practical difference is often vertical and relative geometry. A broad earthwork point can tolerate a few centimetres if the surface model and machine-control checks are managed. An anchor bolt, façade line, embedded plate or steel connection may have a much tighter relative tolerance, where a small error causes rework even if the absolute coordinate appears plausible.

|---|---|---|---|
| Large, open-area control | Fast coverage; centimetre positioning when fixed and corrected | Slower because each point needs a sight line and setup geometry | RTK, with independent checks |
| Earthwork and grading | Well suited to many dispersed points and machine-control support | Useful where satellite visibility is poor or local geometry must be tied tightly | RTK for production; total station for checks or blocked areas |
| Building-footprint stakeout | Efficient on an unobstructed site after control is verified | Better for transferring axes and checking relative offsets | Use RTK for broad points, total station for axes and verification |
| Anchor bolts, embeds, steel and formwork | May not meet the required relative or vertical tolerance in difficult conditions | Strong local control and precise relative measurements | Total station |
| Interiors and enclosed structures | Satellite blockage normally prevents a dependable fixed solution | Works wherever a prism line of sight can be maintained | Total station |
| Dense urban sites or heavy canopy | Susceptible to blockage and multipath | Unaffected by satellite visibility, but needs optical clearance | Total station or a hybrid setup |
Before selecting equipment, write the required horizontal and vertical tolerances for each work package. A single project can legitimately specify RTK for one package and a total station for another.
When RTK is the better tool
Open sites and widely spaced points
RTK excels when the antenna has a broad, unobstructed sky view and points are spread over a large area. One rover can move quickly between control marks, grading shots, utility corridors and building-footprint points without relocating an optical instrument for every line of sight.

Earthwork, grading and machine-control support
Cut-and-fill checks, finished-grade shots, stockpile surveys and corridor work generally benefit from RTK’s speed and direct coordinate output. Keep the rover on a fixed-height survey tripod for control observations where repeatability matters; the U.S. Geological Survey identifies fixed-height tripods as necessary equipment for survey-grade GNSS work. A pole can be suitable for production shots, but it introduces another source of height and centring variation.
Rapid control checks
RTK can verify that control marks remain in place and can expose a gross shift before layout begins. Do not treat one apparently good reading as proof. Occupy important marks independently, preferably after re-initialization and from a different observation sequence.

RTK requirements and a reliable field procedure
- Confirm the project tolerance. Separate work that needs broad centimetre positioning from work that needs tight relative or vertical control.
- Establish trusted control. Use control with documented coordinates and datum. Check that the base station or network service is operating in the project’s coordinate reference system.
- Set up repeatably. Centre and level the antenna carefully. Use a fixed-height GNSS tripod for control points, and measure or enter antenna height using the manufacturer’s specified reference.
- Initialize and wait for a fixed solution. RTK centimetre accuracy requires carrier-phase and code-phase tracking plus initialization relative to a base station. A float or autonomous solution is not equivalent to a fixed solution.
- Check the correction link. Record the correction source, latency and age of corrections. Loss of the radio, cellular or network link can silently degrade the result.
- Inspect the sky view. Move away from façades, vehicles, cranes, scaffolding, fences and trees that can block or reflect signals. NIST identifies multipath and signal blockage as significant obstacles in construction metrology.
- Observe and record quality indicators. Note solution status, satellite geometry, occupation time and residuals according to the project’s field procedure. Reject points that do not meet the specified criteria.
- Re-initialize and duplicate critical checks. RICS guidance recommends duplicate field checks after re-initialization. Use this for control and for points whose failure would cause rework.
- Compare against an independent check. Check a known mark, a second setup or a total-station observation. Do not validate a point only by repeating the same flawed setup.
- Document the occupation. Record point ID, time, solution status, antenna height, correction source, coordinate system and any obstruction or offset used.
USGS provides a useful illustration of why distance and procedure matter: at an 8 km base distance, an example vertical accuracy is expressed as 2 cm + 1.6 cm = 3.6 cm. The figure is an example, not a universal specification. The same source warns that inappropriate offsets can introduce up to 10 cm of error. Measure the actual antenna or pole position; never apply an unverified offset simply to make a point fit the drawing.
When a total station is the better tool
Tight structural and local geometry
Use a total station when the relationship between points matters more than broad absolute coverage: building axes, column lines, anchor bolts, embeds, steel connections, formwork, façade brackets and final as-built verification are typical examples. The instrument measures angles and distances from a local setup, making it effective for transferring a precise geometry through a structure.
Interiors, façades and blocked skies
Inside a building, beneath a roof or beside a tall structure, a GNSS rover may lose lock or produce reflected-signal errors. A total station can continue if the instrument and prism have a clear optical path. Plan sight lines around walls, plant, scaffolding and temporary works; optical visibility is the total station’s limiting condition.

Vertical work and independent verification
Where elevation differences are consequential, a checked total-station setup can provide a strong independent comparison to RTK. It is not automatically error-free: a wrong prism constant, incorrect target height, poor centring, a weak resection or a disturbed control point can bias every result.

Total-station setup and checking procedure
- Select stable control. Choose marks outside excavation, haul routes, vibration and likely construction disturbance. Confirm them against at least one independent mark.
- Set over a known point or perform a checked resection. Centre and level the instrument, enter the correct instrument height and verify the coordinate system and units.
- Set the prism correctly. Confirm the prism constant, pole bubble, target height and orientation. A wrong target height creates a vertical error even when the angle and distance are measured perfectly.
- Orient to more than one control point where practical. Check backsight residuals and the quality of the resection. Reject a setup that relies on a weak geometry or a single unverified mark.
- Lay out from the approved model. Confirm that the loaded coordinates, design revision and units match the current construction issue.
- Check critical points from another direction or setup. For anchor bolts, axes and embeds, measure an independent dimension or occupy from another trusted control point.
- Protect and recheck control. Construction traffic can move a tripod or control mark. Recheck orientation after any interruption, relocation or suspected disturbance.
Speed, crew size and setup trade-offs
RTK often wins production speed because one operator can carry the rover between dispersed points and does not need to maintain an optical sight line. Its productivity falls when the receiver repeatedly loses fixed status, corrections drop out or the operator must move into poor sky conditions.
A conventional total-station workflow usually needs an instrument operator and a prism person, although robotic instruments can reduce the crew requirement. Robotic capability does not remove the need for a clear line of sight, stable control or independent checks. Total stations also spend more time on setup, backsight, relocation and reorientation, but that investment can be smaller than the cost of correcting a structural error.
| Operational factor | RTK GNSS/GPS | Total station |
|---|---|---|
| Typical crew pattern | Often one rover operator | Usually instrument and prism operators; robotic operation may reduce this |
| Setup frequency | Few setups over open areas | More setups as the work moves or sight lines disappear |
| Environmental dependency | Sky visibility, multipath, correction link and initialization | Optical line of sight, stable control and clear targets |
| Best production pattern | Many dispersed points over a large site | Dense local layout tied to precise axes or elevations |
| Main hidden risk | Accepting a degraded solution or unverified offset | Propagating a bad setup, backsight or control mark |
Can RTK replace a robotic total station?
Not as a blanket replacement. RTK can replace some robotic-total-station tasks when the site is open, the required tolerance is compatible with RTK performance and the correction and checking procedures are robust. It cannot replace the total station’s ability to work without satellite visibility or to establish tight local geometry through an enclosed or obstructed structure.
Conversely, a robotic total station does not replace RTK for every open-site task. It still needs a prism line of sight and repeated setups, so using it for widely scattered earthwork points can consume more time and crew effort than necessary. The decision should be made package by package rather than instrument by instrument.

A practical hybrid workflow
- Build or verify the site control with RTK. Occupy control marks using fixed solutions, repeat observations after re-initialization and record the coordinate reference system and quality information.
- Use the rover for broad coverage. Stake earthwork limits, utilities, rough building footprints and other open-area points that meet the RTK tolerance.
- Transfer trusted control to the total station. Select stable marks and verify the instrument setup and orientation independently.
- Lay out critical geometry optically. Establish building axes, anchor bolts, steel, formwork, embeds and interior points from the checked total-station network.
- Perform final independent verification. Use the other technology where conditions allow: total station to check selected RTK points, or RTK to check an exterior control point established optically.
- Keep an auditable record. Preserve point IDs, revisions, setup details, checks, tolerances and exceptions so a later discrepancy can be traced to a measurement or a design change.
This division of labor reduces both major failure modes: slow coverage when optical work is unnecessary, and unrecognized satellite or procedural errors on points whose failure would be expensive.
Common failure modes and fixes
RTK reports a fixed solution near a building
A fixed status does not eliminate multipath. Move to a location with a clearer sky view, avoid reflective surfaces, allow the solution to stabilize and repeat the point after re-initialization. Compare with an independent control observation before accepting it.
Heights disagree by several centimetres
Check antenna or pole height entry, the reference point used by the receiver, datum and geoid model, base-station distance and whether the RTK solution was genuinely fixed. A total-station check can distinguish a coordinate-model problem from a field-observation problem.
A total-station layout shifts after relocation
Recheck the backsight, instrument and prism heights, prism constant, centring and the stability of every control mark. A weak resection or a moved mark can shift all subsequent points; do not average the shifted results with earlier points until the cause is identified.

Offsets were used to reach an inaccessible point
Offsets can be useful, but USGS cautions that inappropriate offsets may create up to 10 cm of error. Measure the offset with a documented method, preserve the direction and distance in the record and verify the resulting point independently.

The design point cannot be reached safely
Do not trade safety for a nominally better observation. Use a surveyed offset, a remote target or a different setup, then have the method and tolerance accepted by the project surveyor or engineer. Record the construction offset so the installed work can be checked later.
Cost and procurement considerations
There is no authoritative, current purchase-price or payback figure that applies across projects. Total cost depends on the instrument accuracy class, robotic features, controller and software, correction service, accessories, calibration, training, labor and local procurement. Rental, subcontracted surveying and ownership can produce different break-even points even for the same instrument.
Specify the performance and workflow before comparing quotations. For RTK, include the rover, base or network corrections, fixed-height tripod for control, poles, tribrachs, radios or cellular data, batteries, field software and a calibration/checking plan. For a total station, include prisms, poles, tribrachs, data collector, robotic or manual operation, batteries, accessories, calibration and the control required for setup and verification. Confirm regional availability and the surveyor-of-record or contract requirements before purchase.
Decision checklist
- Choose RTK when the site is open, points are dispersed, centimetre-level positioning is sufficient, and you can maintain corrections, initialization and independent checks.
- Choose a total station when relative geometry or vertical precision is tight, or when work is indoors, beside tall buildings, under canopy or otherwise GNSS-obstructed.
- Choose both when civil work covers an open site but structural, façade or interior work demands local optical control.
- Escalate to the project surveyor when specifications conflict, control is unstable, tolerances are unstated or the consequence of error is greater than the field crew can verify.
Bottom line for construction layout
RTK is the productivity tool for open ground and broad coordinate-based work; a total station is the control tool for precise local geometry and blocked-sky conditions. Main Roads Western Australia’s published guidance reflects that distinction: total stations can achieve better than ±20 mm horizontal and ±15 mm vertical, while RTK GPS is generally ±20 mm horizontal and ±30 mm height under controlled procedures. Treat those figures as task- and procedure-dependent, not interchangeable guarantees. A checked hybrid workflow usually delivers the best balance of speed, coverage and risk control.
