Roundabout Signs and Markings Explained: How to Read Lane Arrows and Yield Signs

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At a U.S. roundabout, the YIELD sign controls the entrance. A yield line, when marked, shows where that obligation applies. Lane-use signs and pavement arrows tell you which movements are permitted from each approach lane; after entering, follow the marked lane through the circulatory roadway and toward the intended exit. The signs and markings at the actual approach control—not a generic roundabout diagram—and state or local law supplies the enforceable details.

What the main signs and markings mean

The Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), 11th Edition with Revision 1 incorporated, provides U.S. traffic-control guidance for roundabout signs and markings. The manual distinguishes modern roundabouts from rotaries and traffic circles. The explanations below describe how to read the control devices; they do not replace the driver handbook or traffic law adopted by your state, county, or city.

Device Where you see it Information it communicates What a driver should do
YIELD sign At the controlled entrance Entry is subject to a yield requirement Approach at a safe speed and yield as the sign and applicable local law require
Yield line Across the approach near the entrance, when provided The point behind which drivers are required to yield Yield before the line; stop there if stopping is necessary and safe
Lane-use regulatory sign On the approach, usually above or beside the lanes The movement or movements assigned to each lane by arrow symbols Choose a permitted lane before entering and remain consistent with its marked path
Approach lane-use arrow Painted in an approach lane A pavement reminder of the lane assignment Match the arrow to the regulatory sign and select the lane that serves your intended movement
Circulatory-roadway lane line Between lanes inside a multi-lane roundabout Channels vehicles into defined circulating lanes Stay within the lane and do not cross a line to improvise an exit
Circulatory-roadway arrow Inside a multi-lane roundabout, if used Shows the lane path or permitted movement within the circle Follow the arrow and the continuing lane line toward departure
Wide dotted white entry line Across entering lanes as part of an outer-edge-line treatment An edge or boundary treatment described by the MUTCD, not a lane-use instruction by itself Read it together with the YIELD sign, yield line, and lane-use devices; do not treat it as an arrow

How the entry yield works

The YIELD sign is the regulatory control

The red-and-white YIELD sign at an entrance tells approaching drivers that they must yield. “Yield” is a traffic-control instruction, not an invitation to merge whenever a gap feels comfortable. Reduce speed, check the circulating roadway and other approach lanes, and give priority as required by the sign and the law in that jurisdiction. A clear gap does not cancel the sign; it simply may allow you to proceed without stopping.

Because right-of-way wording and enforcement can be stated differently in state codes, use your current state driver handbook for the legal details that apply where you drive. The MUTCD supplies the sign and marking standard, while the jurisdiction determines how its traffic law is adopted and enforced.

What the yield line adds

A yield line is a pavement cue that may be placed at the entrance. It locates the point behind which the approaching driver must yield. The line is separate from the upright sign: a location can have a YIELD sign with a line, a sign without that particular line, or additional entry markings arranged for the design. When the line is present, treat the space before it as the controlled approach. Do not roll past it while waiting for a safe opportunity unless the road layout and a traffic officer direct otherwise.

How to read lane-use signs before entering

Start with the regulatory sign, not a remembered rule

On a multi-lane approach, look for the lane-use sign before you reach the yield point. Its arrows show which movement or combination of movements is permitted from each lane. The MUTCD examples include alternative arrow combinations for roundabout approaches, so there is no single nationwide arrangement that can be inferred from lane position alone.

Read the sign from your actual lane. An arrow pointing to a departure direction, a straight-ahead movement, or a permitted combination applies to the lane under that arrow. If your intended exit is not included, move into a lane whose sign permits that movement while you are still upstream and changing lanes is legal and safe.

Use approach arrows as a second check

Painted lane-use arrows reinforce the assignment shown on the regulatory sign. FHWA advises using compatible arrow styles on pavement and on regulatory lane-use signs where arrows are provided. When the sign and pavement arrow appear inconsistent, do not invent a compromise movement. Slow down, re-read the sign, and follow the controlling devices and local instructions; if the conflict cannot be resolved safely, continue only when the path is clear and permitted.

Expect lane lines on multi-lane approaches

Under the cited MUTCD edition, a multi-lane approach has lane lines. Those lines are part of the guidance that keeps each movement in its assigned lane. Enter in the lane that matches the sign and arrow, then keep that lane rather than drifting across another vehicle’s path near the exit.

Following arrows and lane lines inside the roundabout

Circulatory-roadway arrows are path information

Some multi-lane roundabouts use arrows within the circulatory roadway. When present, the 2023 MUTCD text describes them as normal lane-use arrows. They help communicate how a lane continues through the circle and which departure it can serve. The arrow does not give permission to cross a lane line; it describes the movement available while you remain in the marked lane.

Approach and circulating markings should agree

FHWA calls for compatible markings on the approach and in the circulatory roadway so that the intended lane path remains understandable through departure. Before entering, identify the lane you need. Once inside, use the continuing lane line and any interior arrow to stay on that path. If the lane you entered does not lead to the desired departure, do not cut across another lane at the last moment. Continue according to the markings and choose a legal, safe correction after leaving.

Do not misread the wide dotted white line

A wide dotted white line may run across entering lanes as part of the roundabout’s outer-edge-line treatment. It is not a substitute for the YIELD sign, and it is not a lane-use arrow. Its meaning depends on the complete entrance treatment. Read the sign, any yield line, the lane-use arrows, and the edge marking together.

A step-by-step method for approaching a roundabout

  1. Scan early. Look for advance warning, the YIELD sign, lane-use signs, and arrows while you still have time to choose a lane smoothly.
  2. Identify your destination. Know which exit or direction you need, but do not assume that a particular lane always serves it. The posted assignment controls.
  3. Choose the permitted lane. Match your intended movement to the arrow above or beside the lane and to the painted approach arrow.
  4. Reduce speed. Enter at a speed that lets you inspect the circulating roadway and comply with the yield requirement.
  5. Locate the yield point. If a yield line is marked, remain behind it while yielding. If it is not marked, use the entrance control and the roadway geometry to determine where to yield.
  6. Yield as required. Give way according to the YIELD sign and the applicable state or local rule. Do not rely on a generic “merge” habit.
  7. Enter only when the marked path is clear. Keep to the lane selected on the approach. In a multi-lane roundabout, watch the adjacent lane as well as the circulating traffic.
  8. Follow the interior guidance. Maintain your lane, obey any circulatory-roadway arrow, and use the continuing lane line to reach the permitted departure.
  9. Leave without a last-second lane change. Follow the marked path through the exit. If you miss the intended departure, continue around only where the signs and markings allow it, rather than crossing a solid or channelizing line abruptly.

How to compare two or more approach lanes

When an approach offers more than one lane, compare the complete path rather than choosing by habit. The relevant questions are the same whether the roundabout has two lanes or more:

Comparison point Question to answer at the approach Decision rule
Permitted movement Which arrow or arrow combination is assigned to each lane? Select only a lane whose posted movement includes your intended departure
Sign-and-pavement agreement Does the painted arrow reinforce the regulatory lane-use sign? Use the compatible, clearly posted assignment and resolve any apparent conflict before entering
Continuing lane path Does the lane line or interior arrow continue toward the intended exit? Choose the approach lane whose marked path remains compatible through the circulatory roadway
Departure position Where will your lane be when you reach the exit? Stay in that lane; do not cross another lane at the exit solely because the turn feels shorter

This is why a universal rule such as “always use the right lane for the first exit” is unreliable. Lane assignments depend on the signs, markings, and geometry installed at that particular roundabout.

Illustrative reading examples

Single-lane entrance

With one approach lane, there is no lane choice to make, but the entry still has a YIELD sign. Slow, identify the yield point if marked, yield as required, and remain in the circulating lane until the exit indicated by the roadway layout and signs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two-lane entrance with combined arrows

Suppose the sign over the right lane shows a straight-ahead-and-right combination and the pavement arrow repeats it. That lane is assigned to those permitted movements; it is not automatically a lane for every exit. If the left lane carries a different combination, select it only when that combination includes your destination and the interior markings continue compatibly.

Interior arrow that changes your expectation

You may enter believing that a lane will continue to a departure, then see an arrow inside the circulatory roadway directing a different permitted path. Follow the posted interior marking rather than forcing the vehicle toward the expected exit. The arrow and lane line are there to keep the path predictable for neighboring drivers.

Approach marking that looks like a lane arrow

A broad dotted white line at the entrance can look prominent, especially in rain or at night. It is part of the outer-edge-line treatment described by the MUTCD. Do not read it as a turn instruction; use the actual arrow symbols and the YIELD sign for movement and entry decisions.

Common mistakes and safer corrections

  • Treating yield as optional: A gap in circulating traffic does not remove the regulatory requirement. Approach under control and yield as the sign and local law require.
  • Stopping after the yield line: If the line is present, it marks the point behind which you yield. Stopping beyond it can place the vehicle in the entry or conflict area.
  • Choosing a lane from memory: Another roundabout’s layout may use different arrow combinations. Read the signs at this approach every time.
  • Ignoring the pavement arrow: The arrow reinforces the lane-use sign and helps drivers select the correct lane before the entrance.
  • Changing lanes inside the circle to reach an exit: Interior lane lines and arrows are designed to channel traffic. Stay in the marked path and avoid a sudden crossing maneuver.
  • Confusing the dotted entry line with a movement marking: The wide dotted white line is an edge treatment, not a substitute for an arrow or yield instruction.
  • Assuming every roundabout is controlled identically: State adoption, supplements, local arrangements, and geometry can vary. Apply the signs actually installed and consult the applicable handbook.

What the MUTCD does—and does not—settle

The MUTCD is a U.S. federal traffic-control reference. It describes the sign designs, marking concepts, and compatibility expected for roundabout approaches and circulatory roadways. It is not a worldwide driving code, and the cited material does not establish one state-specific wording or enforcement rule for every yielding situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

States and local agencies may adopt the federal provisions, add supplements, or arrange markings for their own geometry and lane use. For a licensing test, collision question, or enforcement issue, use the current driver handbook and traffic code for the jurisdiction where the roundabout is located. Rules outside the United States require a separate country’s road authority guidance.

Quick pre-entry checklist

  • Have I seen the YIELD sign and reduced speed?
  • Is there a yield line, and am I behind it while yielding?
  • Which movement does the lane-use sign assign to my lane?
  • Does the painted approach arrow match that assignment?
  • Will the marked lane line or interior arrow continue toward my intended departure?
  • Can I enter without violating the yield requirement or forcing another road user to change path?
  • Once inside, can I stay in my lane through the exit instead of making a last-second crossing?

Use the signs and markings at the location as the final authority for lane choice and path. The FHWA MUTCD 11th Edition with Revision 1 incorporated, including its 2023 marking text, provides the federal reference framework; the current local handbook and law determine the rule that applies to your drive.
